Believe it or not, brand new videotapes that ranged from $80 to $100 were quite common in the 1980s.

I remember the first VHS cassettes costing about $20 each. That's significant money by early 1980s standards, but not $80 or $100.

I'll add that the early VHS tapes were made to higher standards than those that were mass manufactured in later years. The cassette shells were very solid and the magnetic tape was of a higher caliber. Of course, once prices for VHS tapes dropped to a couple bucks per unit, what quality could we expect to get?
