Tax burden
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:19:11 PM »
There are always pros and cons on being on a game show in the US, and I'd love to go see a taping, but right now, I have no passport and there is little hope for my name to be called.

Also, there's the taxes to pay for the winnings.  Up in Canada, whatever is won is what the winner keeps.  The exchange rate is almost at parity with the Canadian and US dollars.

I think you'd have to pay 30% in taxes if more than $600 and another 7% if it's $1,500 or more, otherwise any winnings $600 or less are exempt from paying taxes.

If it's really an issue, you can play and then refuse to accept whatever prizes you do win, which relieves you of having to pay taxes on them (but you still have the satisfaction of beating Fingers at her own game :) ). You can also declare yourself ineligible before you're interviewed, so Stan knows you don't want to be picked at all.
