9/4/64--next-to-last nighttime show (original series)
« on: August 01, 2006, 12:31:37 PM »
This telecast of The Price Is Right aired September 4, 1964--eight years to the date before the CBS edition would premiere--is the next-to-last nighttime show of the original series. As such, there is no home viewer sweepstakes. Five bidding games will be played.

Johnny Gilbert: Backstage are some of the most eciting prizes on television. On our panel tonight is the outstanding actor of stage and films, Mr. Jose Ferrer! (audience applause) Stand by for The Price Is Right ("Window Shopping" starts) Brought to you by Polident, the special denture sleanser with active oxygen. Polident, for denture cleaning and denture freshness no toothpaste can give. And now here is your host on The Price Is Right, ladies and gemtlemen, the inimitable Bill Cullen!

The Ritz Theater crowd warmly greets Bill, who extends welcome to Jose, and compliments his work on stage and in film. Jose had just flown in after wrapping up filming on the movie "Ship Of Fools," and unlike many of the celebrity guests on the show, Jose knows how to play The Price Is Right, and he watches it all the time.

The other contestants:

Flossie Gasser is the current champion, a housewife from Symsonia KY, who won last week with $11,394.

Ryal Green was the last sweepstakes winner and was flown in from Columbia Falls MT.

Dorothy Batesky is a housewife from Rochester N Y.

Toni Wallace comes out with the drum of cards filled out by the studio audience and Jose draws five of them. He lays them face down; they are the folks whom Jose will be playing for. Bill shows us the Price is Right box game (with the supplementary title "Bid It Right") and Jose reads the first drawn name: T. Marcus Rogers. (No home city was given.)

First item up for bids: A coin-operated jukebox from Atlantic-New York Corporation. It has four speakers and can play 33s and well as 45s for a total of 160 plays.

Mrs. Gasser opens the bidding with the opening asked to be at least $500, minimum bids at $100:
(*--frozen bid; [bz]--last bid buzzer)
-------500 -------600 -------700 -------800
-------900 ------1000 ------1100 ------1200
------1300 ------1450 ------1550 ------1700 [bz]
----* 1300 ----* 2100 ----* 1500 ----* 1700

Actual retail price: $1795, with Jose the winner.  Mr. Marcus comes down to join Jose as the bonus bell rings. Mr. Marcus wins 25 toys from Ideal Toys for younger children, and for him and his wife, he wins a 1965 Triumph Spitfire convertible.

Bill reminds viewers that the daytime Price Is Right can be seen over these same ABC stations at 10:30 AM Eastern, 9:30 AM Central.

Next name Jose calls: Maxine Hollinshade. Next item up for bids: Wrought iron indoor/outdoor furniture from Meadowcraft furniture. 22 pieces in all.

Mr. Green starts with the opening asked to be at least $500, minimums at $100:
---------- -------500 -------600 -------800
-------900 ------1000 ------1200 ------1300
------1400 [bz]----* 1875 ----* 1200 ----* 2000
----* 1400

Actual retail price: $1902.50, with Mr. Green the winner.

Third name: Barry Seifert. Next item: Silver plate serving pieces from Michael C. Fina. 61 pieces in all.

Mrs. Batesky starts with the opening asked to be at least $500, minimums at $100:

Actual retail price: $1851, with Mrs. Batesky the winner.

Fourth name: Peter Cleland. Next item: a snack bar with an equipped kitchen unit. It's from Murphy Dewar Bed company of New York and L & B products, New York.

Jose opens anywhere, with minimums $50:
----------- ----------- ----------- ------1000
-----* 900 ------1050 ------2000 ------2500
-----* 900 ----* 1050 ----* 2000 ----* 2500

Actual retail price: $932.50, with Mrs. Gasser the winner.
(Mrs. Gasser's initial bid of 900 was an underbid, which is automatically frozen.)

Final name: Veronica Jean Kelly. Final item: a diamond ring, a solitaire design on a platinum surfce from Johnston Jewelry, Waldorf Astoria. Its total weight is 4.25 karats.

Mrs. Gasser opens with the opening bid asked to be at least $4000, minimums at $100:
------4000 ------4100 ------5000 ------5500
------5600 ------5700 ------5900 ------6000
------6500 ------7200 ------7600 ------8000 [bz]
----* 6500 ----* 7200 ----* 8100 ----* 8000

An audience survey indicates that the winner is Mrs. Batesky. Actual retail price: $8100, with Mrs. Batesky hitting it on the nose.

Final scores:
Mrs. Gasser--$932
Mr. Green--$1902
Mrs. Batesky: $9951
Jose: $4392

All the other folks Jose played for will receive a set of West Bend appliances. Mrs. Batesky is the new champion and returns on the next show (the nighttime finale) to defend. Mrs. Gasser leaves with a two-show total of $12,327. Bill tells us that the guest celebrity next week is Pat Carroll.

Just so you guys know, Since this was the next to last primetime show, there was no sweepstakes held for that month, which is why there were 5 items up for bids instead of 4.

P.S.  Just saw his note at the top of this recap, so disregard.  Good recap CCook!!

Cool! Who was the celebrity guest on that show? (Should be August 28, 1964.)
