Title: Season 52 New Studio Experience!
Post by: Mr. Weatherman on July 28, 2023, 03:26:52 PM
Today is the day!  Taping of our favorite game show has officially commenced at a new studio for the first time since the current CBS iteration began 51 years ago (not counting the one-off Vegas 30th Anniversary Special).  At least a handful of Golden-Road members are present for today’s taping sessions and will surely begin filling us in shortly on all the changes we can expect to see on television this September.

Rather than continuing the previous speculation conversations, this occasion is definitely worthy of its own thread as we’ll finally have some long-awaited answers to the many questions we’ve all had for many months now!

What is the size of the audience at the new studio?

Around 150 in the audience based on early reports on Twitter (or X or Elon's love child or whatever it's called today)

Numbers I saw went to 165. Capacity might be 170 if wheelchairs are the last row. Don’t fear - it’s the same ol’ Price is Right we love. They were very clever with the Race Game curtain.

JSYK, capacity of TBBS was close to 330, assuming capacity is the standard-bearer.  Did anyone get “starred”?

Know at least one person in the audience today; per Drew, Magic # has officially been retired.

With the electronics issues the last two years, I am not even remotely surprised, but sad all the same as I loved it.

(Edited: Was not aware the prop at least made the move. Game's still dead, though.)

Drew also mentioned the game was boring and there was no reason it shouldn’t have been won every time.

I was at today's 1st taping but as per show policy I will not be spilling a lot. I do look forward to discussing the details when it airs. This might also result in the largest section of blue rows in CSS in quite some time.

There is an explanation behind the ticket blast but I'm not sure if its disclosure is kosher or not.

Lots of first show hiccups in the new processing but this will get better with practice.

Perhaps Magic's eggcrate will live on in Check-Out.

Expect a megathread post shortly. There were a lot of us there. We want to get everything together and keep the spoilers at bay. Don't want to get the show mad at us!

Everyone at the show was great as always. Loved being in studio.

All I'll say is this: If I were a casual viewer, I might not notice that many changes.

From what I remember Drew's exact wording was not "Magic # is retired", more like "we're probably not gonna play it again" and then going into the reasons why. I'm still not putting it on my Greco card.

Word to the wise for those of you planning to visit soon: if you see either the first or second show of the day, you will not be allowed into the third one, even if you have a ticket. The reason they gave us is that some of the prizes in the first two shows may also be used in the third (it's airing out of order, from what we understand).

That makes sense, as my hunch is they are playing some of the same games because of lack of backstage storage space. They are currently doing a complete makeover of the buildings next to the studio. I wonder if they will be storage space for Price and Deal or strictly studio space.

What a fun experience!

The new studio looks great! The crew obviously needs to work out the kinks a bit, Show #3 taping was two hours. Seating rows definitely feel more roomy than before (when they had the full audience). I hope something that happened on one of the games doesn’t cause S&P issues, that’s all I’ll say.

Today was an amazing experience to take part of this historic moment in person. I almost never post anything here, but I am always reading the posts. A really special part of this magical (not Magic # 😄) experience was meeting people from this site. It was so great to put faces to the pseudonyms.  We all helped each other one way or another which is a strong sign of community. That was an important part of this experience for me. So thank you all for making that happen! I look forward to making that happen again if possible.

Works like it did when Stan was there, but instead of groups of 20 or so being interviewed in line, you are brought into a room as a group of 6-7. They are still looking for maintained energy.

Big dump coming later this weekend, but bullet points:

Nearly everything takes place at a Korean church next door to the studio lot. You only actually step onto the studio lot for the last part of the process. All the steps from previous Drew tapings are there sans COVID requirements which have been lifted.

Every second I spent thinking of the design being significantly different could have been better used.  Probably wouldn't make too much sense changing the design which I always thought was doubtful but not at the level of a zero percent chance.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing it either live or when pictures show up.  Sounds like it's a scenario where certain people can tell the difference but a casual will not

Works like it did when Stan was there, but instead of groups of 20 or so being interviewed in line, you are brought into a room as a group of 6-7. They are still looking for maintained energy.
Interestingly enough, I went through an experience like this at show when Stan was still there. When I had gone in late August of 2019, they were doing some renovation work on the parking lot outside of the normal holding area at TVC that would interfere with sitting there. So, they took us inside of TVC after doing our paperwork at the normal area and we lined up in one of the halls and were called in smaller than normal groups (more like 10-13) into a meeting room where he'd interview us. Then we went through some more halls that would take us around the renovation and then dump us out back at the regular holding area where we wait before going into the studio.

And what I didn't know was that not only will TPiR and LMaD be filming at the new Haven Studio, but so will Press Your Luck AND Celebrity Family Feud! So it should be interesting to see where those go from there!
They've actually already filmed both Press Your Luck and Celebrity Family Feud. So, if you want to see what Celebrity Family Feud looks like in its new digs, the current season airing is what was filmed at Haven. Though don't expect much of a difference. As it sounds like with Price, they did a pretty darn good job of bringing over the set just as it was with minor differences. The same goes for PYL when it airs in the fall.

Our phones were not taken until very late in the process. The holding room for contestants even has TPIR props like the MDS showcase podiums and director's chairs that seem like they were placed to specifically encourage you to take photos with them.

After Hannah's interview, you'll wind up here. Ignore the LMAD tags with letters on them, we were seated in order of our OOA numbers. An episode of TPIR was cued up for our enjoyment.

It's still active, someone found a stream of a service from last week.

Amusingly, by the contestant photo desk there is an office that has a glass window to the side. On that window there is a note that reads "TAMARA THIS IS GLASS DO NOT WALK INTO IT." smh Tamara.

I have it on good authority that certain important adjustments to the procedure are in place as of this morning, others will probably have more information later.

If I ever make the trip back to LA for a taping, I might have to make an effort to make a shirt saying "Tamara? This is glass. Do not walk into it!"

Actually I might reserve it for a meetup of some sort, but not for an actual episode (even though I'm not ever getting picked as a contestant anyway)

Makes sense, since many church type facilities are not in use every day, that they would lease space to someone for days it was not being used to help with the costs of maintenance and such.  Good for both parties :)

There is some complete reconstruction or demolition work going on to a building adjacent to the studio. I'm not sure if said building was a studio or a warehouse (a faded sign above a door frame read "SHIPPING"). I also don't know if that building is being reconstructed as contestant processing, warehouse space, or a new studio. If it is being reconstructed to serve as a processing space for studio audiences and contestants, I presume the church would still continue to serve as a parking lot for members of the public.

First:  gamesurf was spot on about a great many things.  You are going to think you are in the wrong place because, currently, if you arrive before 6:00am, you might well be the first to arrive, BUT by 8:00am the Priorities numbered about 45 and the Vouchers filled the rest for the first taping.  Yes, they asked people to stay for the 2nd, but the line for third had 11.

Do what does that mean?  For now, until notified otherwise, show up no later than 7:00am, even with a standby voucher.  You most likely will get in.

For now, that’s all I’ll say.

People above have done a great job sharing the new studio experience. I thought I'd highlight key changes between the pre-COVID process and the current process. These are not meant to be complaints, just a comparison!

The audience is about 40% smaller
Pre-COVID, the audience was 290 members; it's now 170. If you're hoping to be a contestant, that's 120 fewer people you're competing with! It also means that to get the same energy in the studio, people have to be that much louder during the taping, but that's never been a problem with TPiR fans :-D.

There's a lot more standing
TBBS had benches all over the place, so once you were let in to TVC, pretty much the only standing you had to do was to walk between benches, get your picture taken, and during your interview with Stan. Now the only room you get to sit down in besides the studio itself is the large classroom at the church. So after they let you in to the church, you will be standing for probably an hour filling out paperwork, having your ID checked and so on before you make it to the classroom. Also, while waiting to get into the studio, you will be led from the church to a line outside where you will be standing for a bit waiting for the studio to be ready. But as an aside, the port a potties you can use while waiting outside to get in to the studio are the best port a potties you will ever see. Not only are they kept immaculately clean, they even have air conditioning!

Hannah vs. Stan
Hannah (the new contestant coordinator) has made the interview process her own! One of the key differences is that while Stan was very much about interviewing one person at a time for 30-ish seconds each, Hannah will bounce back and forth and get a group dynamic going with the 7 or so people she interviews at a time. So if you're "last," don't be surprised if she comes to you early. Or if you're "first," she may interview you, talk to a couple of other people, then come back to you. Be ready at all times!

That said, she does follow Stan's precedent of asking people "What's your favorite game?" Be ready with an answer for that!

You can't buy anything
There is no more gift shop, no photo in front of a green screen that turns into the big wheel, no vendor selling drinks. However, as mentioned previously in this thread, they do have free water/soda/coffee/small snack bags in the classroom while you wait, and you can bring your own stuff to drink/munch on while waiting. Just remember, it's still the case that no food or drink is allowed in the studio.

You can interact with everyone
With the old bench setup, you could really only talk to the people around you in line. But now that people are in a classroom, once you're interviewed, you can wander the classroom and talk to whomever you like! I was OOA #50 and had no problem talking to the people with OOA's in the single digits or OOA's in the triple digits after their interviews.

Free and much easier parking
No more having to spend $24 at the Grove to park and then walk over the studio. The parking is now free and right there at the church, so if you need to get something from your car or put something away, it will take only seconds to do so.

There's nothing near the new studio
But the flip side of that is that you have to plan your meals and hotels out. There's no more going across the street to a bagel shop or walking to Chipotle if you get hungry before an afternoon taping. You need to eat beforehand or bring your meals with you.

Overall, if you've been to a pre-COVID taping, the overall process will still feel quite familiar to you. But this will hopefully let you be prepared for what's different so you can focus on being the most energetic you can be while you're there!

Rachel's Insta post publicly reveals the only other significant change to the studio: concentric rounded rectangles on the three audience walls. These surround the already existing light stripe that has been in place in some fashion since S40 (this stripe has also been modified to no longer go above Door 4, it just stops and resumes at the edges of Door 4).

I counted 27 light-up G-T asterisks on the walls, a marked departure from the era when the G-T asterisk almost went extinct. I believe most of them are from the old studio; the highest one at stage right is obviously full of dirt (or at least was Friday morning).

They did such a good job of replicating the setup in the new location. The ONLY change a casual viewer will likely notice is the new Contestant's Row.

How is Contestant's Row different?

It's visible in Rachel's Instagram photo. It's the number display with a video screen under it. It tapers off at the sides. They've slightly recreated the side aprons of Studio 33 with a small wall of lights. Drew liked he didn't have to look down at the contestant's and remarked it always should have been like that.

Contestants Row has (out of necessity, the new studio no longer has The Apron™) adopted an appearance similar to most international versions.

Raising the stage to simulate 33 is out of the question; the fly space is already shorter than it was in 33 and raising the stage wouldn't leave enough fly space to accommodate the production's needs.

Sole opinion: if Carey actual did away with the glasses, I think I'd actually be totally fine with that.

Anyway, while I didn't think he looked bad over the past several years, Drew does look great there.  Younger looking, happier (I think), perfect timing during the start at the new studio.

Speaking of which, I think I already love the "new-look" contestants row!

It seems they've taken great care to keep the overall look and feel of the show as close to the same as it could be given the circumstances and I admire that. Obviously changes were going to have to be made with a move to a new studio and it looks like they've made the right ones. Also, good for Drew for taking care of himself. He looks as good as he did 10 years ago.

And he’s still flashing the card on the side of the studio where the contestant is sitting, which is not the reason why that was being done, originally.

For now, until notified otherwise, show up no later than 7:00am, even with a standby voucher.  You most likely will get in.

MAN do I wish I could get myself out to California. Even though I'm not much of a morning person, keeping myself on Eastern Time meant the early morning hours were easy (easier?) for me.

So, I have a question, as I am planning on going to a taping later this year.

What if I was making my way to the studio using a ride-share service like Lyft/Uber? Any special instructions I would have to give the driver as we arrive at the church so they know where to exactly drop me off?

I used a Lyft to get there. Just enter the address on the ticket (5005 Edenhurst Ave., Glendale) as the destination and when you get there, tell the driver to follow the signs to The Price is Right. I had no problem. Note I got a ride back with fellow members from this site, so I can't comment on the return process.

Thank you, litebulb.

As a follow-up question (that anyone can answer), how safe is Glendale, overall? Do they have sidewalks so you can walk to where you need to go (shopping malls, restaurants, etc.), or do you have to rely on driving, Uber/Lyft, public transportation, etc. to get where you need to go?

I work in Glendale, it is very safe. There are sidewalks everywhere, and the downtown has many restaurants and shops and is quite walkable. The drivers are a bit nuts, however, so just watch your step. The studio is on the outskirts (technically in LA).

9821 can attest to the not so great walkability of getting to the studio itself, but Glendale proper is perfectly fine for walking about.

As others have mentioned, the TPIR Taping Experience is much more organized, much easier on the audience members in attendance. And 200% more disability friendly.

We were inside in the ac most of the time and given free water, iced tea and coffee if we wanted it,

And differently abled (disabled contestants get to sit down outside and be shuttled via a golf cart from the interview building to the phone drop off , then to the studio for the taping and to the parking lot to their vehicles or to the front entrance to wait for a friend or a ride share service to pick them up after all that is said and done.

Do we know if Price gets to “keep” their portion of the warehouse, er, studio? It seems it would take a lot of work to strike the audience portion of the set (it’s basically in the middle of the space and the stage is at the east end of the stage). I also wonder where they are storing all of the games and set pieces, as there is absolutely no storage space at Haven, other than the interior hall on the north end of the stage.

And one other thing I'd like to know about the new place at Haven-- the way it's set up where you simply walk around the triangular partition to go play a game with Drew upon winning an IUFB, would that remind you of when the show was under COVID protocols at the old place in Season 49?

I think it's going to be the exact opposite -- it looks to me like they've gone out of their way to maintain the illusion that the stairs are still there.

Both the Giant Price Tag and Race Game curtain are still around.

The Race Game curtain has been redesigned to split into two sections when it’s in the ceiling, but it looks like one piece when it’s fully extended. The old one apparently didn’t fit in the fly space.

The Giant Price Tag is the same as it’s ever been, 2007-era hypocoloids and all.

The Barker and Carey MDS podiums are the same ones with different paint jobs. This particular paint job was never used on the air but rather one they gave them for taking out and about for photos and whatnot  after MDS's were retired.

Where does the audience enter from? I assume one of the two back corners.

That's quite a jog the winning contestant has to take to get up "onstage." I assume it was done because for games where Drew doesn't have to walk anywhere before the prize reveal, without stairs to slow them down, a winner from the green display would otherwise hit their mark too quickly.

The audience comes in from the corner that they start the shot at. Hadn't realized until someone pointed it out to me that that blue bar at the front helps feed to the illusion that there's more height to this set.

I still would like to see what those screens show below the contestant's row, but this gives you a pretty good idea of what the set will look like this season.

It's pretty roomy too; some may complain that it's smaller or there's less seats, but it means you can actually move to and from your seat without too much issue, plus it's more accommodating for bigger individuals.

A point from Drew I found interesting from that CBS video - the new contestant's row allows Drew to move closer to the contestants as they bid, and may make for a more intimate interaction there. I wonder how Drew may explore this space.

Probably a stupid question-- do you think that the late, great Bob Barker could have worked within the parameters of the new place (where he was looking right at the players, instead of down on them)?

As difficult of a time as he had hearing contestant bids sometimes, being able to stand next to them is a concept he probably would have welcomed.

The only (possible) issue I see with Barker’s era of the show and this new studio arrangement is his microphone.  The stairs slowed contestants down as they ran up on stage, giving Bob a few extra moments to get into position and the contestants an opportunity to gather themselves — if briefly — before running over to Bob.  With the stairs removed, an overly excited contestant might have jumped right over the separation barrier and tripped on Bob’s microphone cord.  Would this have actually happened?  Maybe not.  But in the context of hypothetical issues, this is all I can come up with.  It’s certainly a non-issue today with everything being wireless, including the cameras too, I believe.

The only potential issue I see now, as ElectricPeterTork mentioned, is contestants tripping over the barrier itself out of excited stupidity (which I suppose could have happened with Barker in the hypothetical scenario above).  Again, it may never happen, but we’ve seen stranger things occur over the years.

I have been hearing so much I have even seen someone make a drawing about the stage. when I saw the premier episode today (we only got to see the showcase area for the tribute episode) I personally found most of the stage ok except for the podium. The weird wave graphics under the bid panels seemed mismatched. (The blue clashed) I guess we at least had the audience mostly back. (but I have said in the past it do not have to go back to the multi hundred numbers to make it nice)

Starting this week, they have been turning off the audience monitors during IUFBs during tapings.

At Studio 33, audience members could look up and see the bids on the screens mounted in the ceiling facing the audience. At Haven, those monitors are still there, but without the pit the audience needs to look much higher, which means they need to crane their heads up more, which ends up in a good portion of the audience showing the camera their chin during the bidding process. Now those monitors go blank during IUFBs while Drew recaps the bids with the hopes that the audience will look towards Contestants' Row. We'll see if the end result looks better on camera in about two months. The monitors come back on after the IUFBs.

We did the 3:00 taping on Tuesday and the 12:00 taping on Wednesday. The day before each we received an email saying the audience call times for each were moved forward to 2:00 and 11:30, respectively. They were apparently short on contestants because they had an extra 30-50 audience fillers in both tapings, and the 12:00 taping was opened up to contestants from 8:00 AM. We only had Line Vouchers but were near the front of the line voucher line both times and had no trouble getting in. #102 on Tuesday and #023 on Wednesday.

The audience process has been refined slightly. The photo station has moved up from the top of the stairs to the big audience holding room in order to allow the line to flow a little bit better. The interview area is at the top of the stairs outside the big audience room, so you will walk past them on your way in the room and get a preview of things to come.

Hayley did the interviews both days I was there, though Hannah was also around interviewing people in a second room, I assume to speed the process along.

Both tapings still took about two hours. Expect to leave the studio about five hours after your call time.

Construction on that other building next to the studio is proceeding nicely.

With the height of the new construction, I wonder if these will be studios or storage. Good photo of the progress - how did you get a picture this far along in the audience process? Thanks!

Phone check is now when you’re entering the studio lot. This was taken just a few minutes before I powered it off and checked it in.

Cool! So you can keep your phone in the waiting area now? I read they took your phone right before the interviews in the early days at Haven. Thanks again for clarifying.

Correct, at least as of this week.

When I spoke to OCA during my visit, they indicated that the plan is for storage and contestant processing to occur in the new building in time for Season 53. Renting out the space and parking they are using in the church is not cheap.

I attended the 8 am taping on Wednesday 10/18. I will echo the turning off of monitors during the one bids, but it is so loud in there you can't hear any bids being made so as an audience member I could not effectively (or terribly) help the bidders because I had zero clue what anyone was saying and you could not see the bids. They have to come up with a solution to this.

As for the 8 am taping, out of 180 seats they only got up to around 110 of regular audience so they had to get about 70 seat fillers. They kept telling us we can stay for the 12 pm, practically begging us, but then at the end they said it was very scarce on availability. I think either they guaranteed too many seat fillers or they were surprised how many non seat fillers actually showed up.

Compared to sitting outside at 33 through the whole process, this was so great not to be outside in the heat the whole 4 hours. They had snacks, water, coffee, A/C and a decent amount of bathroom space. The taping seemed to be back to normal speed, they really found their rhythm and Drew was loving the audience interaction he could have in the downtime. It was a great all around experience, but nothing beats the history that 33 had.

We just missed each other!

I had some friends in the 8:00AM taping that stayed til the 12:00. They got OOA numbers in the 120s. They still had a few dozen seat fillers in our taping, so that is surprising to learn they didn’t let more from the 8:00AM in.

I was at the studio early enough to see a large number of seat fillers for the 8:00AM (they were kept in a separate line, they were wearing more generic clothing, and some of them had a book to read during commercial breaks). Not all of them were used for the 8:00 taping, so I have to assume they promised those seat fillers they would get paid if they stuck around for the 12:00 taping.

It was certainly a slow period (although I had heard that the 12:00 taping the day before had to turn away a number of Line Vouchers, which helped fill out the 3:00 line) If it is the case that paid seat fillers in line outside the studio get priority over audience members currently in the studio, that’s really disappointing. There were only 20 or 25 holdover contestants from the previous taping and I didn’t see any numbers higher than the 140s all trip.

I have to assume these seat fillers work on a required minimum amount of hours so instead of paying them to sit around they are willing to bump others so they use what they are paying for.
