Title: FULL RECAP - TPiR 04/01/2010 (April Fools Price III)
Post by: Joe_Capitano on April 01, 2010, 02:52:33 PM
Over the last few days we've seen much discussion (and consternation) about this, but whether you're ready for it or not, the Pricetrust proudly presents ...

APRIL FOOLS PRICE III: THE TAKEOVER

Seems Drew's nemesis Mimi Bobeck (Kathy Kinney) wasn't satisfied enough to be a model on last year's epic, or the patron saint of the "First Four" Breakfast Club. Oh, no. She's power hungry. As of today she's the Executive Producer of Price and Drew is on her list. Her first executive decision: replacing Rich with a guy in a money suit, reassigning the regular models - Gwen became a page, Rachel is a stagehand, Manuela became a commoner. And, to top it off, she brought in what the ladies want...beefcake. A tall guy (Michael Sielaff), a construction worker (James Mercado), a nerd (A.B. Fonfana) and a confused old guy (Alan Gray) who kinda looks like the leader of ZZ Top on retirement.

There's some other crazy stuff that happens, suffice to say you should watch the show if you can. But amidst new management...the show goes on...

Two word summary: Not bad.

Quite amusing, the jokes were not played out to death. Things progressed along nicely. Everyone seemed to get in the "spirit" of the day.

One thing that is my slight negative: It's likely the one and only time these contestants will be on TV -- and they have to go by "Pat." Just like the April Fool's episode with the Groucho glasses: their one moment on TV and their true self is hidden. I would've liked them to drop the pretense for a few seconds and let them introduce the "real" person.

Did I blink or were the "not appearing on stage" prizes edited out?

I liked the humour in today's show.. It wasn't as wacky as last year, but I got several laughs out of the gags. The only thing that really raised my eyebrow was: if a Double Showcase Win had happened, two Cabo trips, two Romes, and two F-150's.. (plus the Mini, of course). I would have preferred to see a single 'Vette as the prize of the second showcase. But I still thought the idea of it was funny, when they presented it.

I thought it was a great show!  I was surprised that I was the only one in chat who got the connection of the SPs offered in Plinko (they were all As Seen on TV products)

That was edited out along with the ticket plug after SCSD1.   From what PFA said in chat, he heard that this show was very heavily edited.  My last opinion of the show before I move on to tomorrow and I know I will get grilled. MRRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPP.

Pay close attention to the fee items used today - all of Plinko's items are products hocked by pitchmen "as seen on TV" and Pick-A-Pair's products were the last six holidays, in ascending order (Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years/Valentines/St. Patrick's).

If they would have killed the Pat schtick, this would have been really good.  It wasn't bad other than that, but last year's was definitely better.

I didn't know Big Dave was so attractive....

Also - go take a look at the credits.  There's a nice nod to The Office in there (I think, or it's pretty close to it.)  I never thought M.R. and Rainn Wilson were that similar...

I really enjoyed this show. Of course the fact it was 5 for 6 didn't hurt, but I thought it wasn't TOO over the top like some people speculated. I actually liked it better than last year's April Fools Show but that's just my opinion.

Just think though. If One Away was won, we'd have had two perfect shows (well sorta anyway, since Plinko isn't really "won") this season, and both would have fallen on theme shows. Would have been an interesting coincidence but now its just random rambling in my post. :P

Last year's was probably better, but this wasn't bad at all, at least much better than the Chicken Little-esque attitude some people had toward it. Yeah, maybe the Pat thing got old after a while but I got used to it and it was really treated as a low-key afterthought throughout most of the show. And hey, we had a lot of good wins today. Overall, I enjoyed it and welcome their try for 2011.

I'm gonna start off by saying this year's show was NOTHING compared to last year's episode. But wow, all the games today were fair, and winnable? Hire Mimi Bobeck as the EP!

All kidding aside, today's show wasn't the three-ring circus I thought it would be. As I already said, the games were fair and winnable, and today's contestants proved it. Today, I'm gonna give this episode some rankings:

Pros:

Cons:
The one and only thing I didn't enjoy was the whole "Pat" thing. #1: Like the Groucho Marx glasses last year, it got old pretty quick, and #2: as Willy pointed this out earlier, people who go to the show would love to hear their name to come on down. Instead, they heard "Pat, Come on Down!" If it were me in the audience and I heard that, I'd feel cheated, and a little ticked off.

^^^ I can definitely see that point of view about the PAT thing. Personally though, I'd be so happy to be called down they could call me Rue McClanahan if they wanted and I'd still be jumping up and down screaming. ;)

I really enjoyed today's show.  Like everyone said, it wasn't overdone, but it was a lot of fun.  Mimi was great and it was funny seeing the male models, and regular models working as stagehands or pages.

Overall, this was a fun show. Nothing was really overdone, it wasn't a disaster, and the games were winnable.

I liked the "Pat" thing, but will agree with those of you who say that it's their one and only opportunity to come on stage, and the contestants should've received some name recognition. I really think the show should've put a slideshow or something similar at the end of the show giving us the real names of the Pats.

If it were me in the audience and I heard that, I'd feel cheated, and a little ticked off.

I don't think you'd feel cheated if you were called on down and won "fabulous prizes". Personally, the show could call me "Turd Brain" for all I care.

This show wasn't as bad as it was put out to be.  Granted, it was by no means great...last year's was definitely better...but it wasn't bad, either.

The "Pat" thing grew old fast. I really wonder how contestants knew who was going to be called, since all Rich said was "Pat"...they must have had cue cards with their real names on them. I agree with the whole "being cheated" thing...they really should have been called by their real names.

Mimi wasn't that bad...though I could have done without a lot of her appearances.  I did find the second Showcase funny with the exact same prizes...sadly, that's about the only part of the show I actually found funny.

...holy crap, the games were winnable today! Pat played Lucky Seven very well in particular...she practically had a guaranteed win on the last number!  I wonder what Pat was thinking on the second Showcase, though.

OVERALL: 3/5.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened since they apparently do that for all the contestants anyway now.

Plinko: Wow, I certainly did not expect this game first! And $21,000 was the icing on the cake!

One Away: The best part of the game was Mimi and her steering wheel.

Pick-a-Pair: I see they're copying off Grocery Game with that holiday theme.

Range Game: Dead center paid off this time, and Rachel the stagehand was a nice surprise.

Lucky $even: Another Rachel cameo as she pushes the car all the way onto the stage...followed by one of the best playings of this game in recent years.

Double Prices: Whatever happened to Alakazam? Guess Mimi's not a big fan of that word.

Showcases: That was funny, with the same three prizes in both Showcases, and then a Mini Cooper in the second Showcase. Add a $25,450 car to the mix, and make it really more interesting.

Miscellaneous: Anybody else besides me a little disappointed that Mimi did not call Drew a "pig" or "doughboy"? BTW, I really enjoyed the show, with its many surprises everywhere on the set. I liked seeing Gwen as the CBS page, Rachel as the aforementioned stagehand, and Manuela as the audience member. I couldn't stop cracking up over Rich the monkey, but why did everybody have to be called "Pat"? Well, I'd like to see what's up their sleeve for Season 39...

And now, the top five things I liked about this April Fool's Day episode (best is last):

Comparing this year's to last year's...last year had more gags, but most of the gags in this one just worked out better. Quality vs Quantity.

Well since Rich (or the guy wearing the suit and monkey head) couldn't speak through the monkey head I would guess that all of the prize copy and calldowns were prerecorded.  And since nobody knew the contestants names at the time of recording, they likely came up with the "Pat" gag as a solution.

Either that, or Rich did the announcing live from a hidden corner backstage, because we saw him do little cameo spots during the second half (like during Range Game when he walked across the set on a cell phone)

It's too much to ask that if someone's called to "Come on Down", that they are called by their real name?  :?

One question I forgot to ask earlier: Is this the first time that the CANOS plug was edited out?

Well since Rich (or the guy wearing the suit and monkey head) couldn't speak through the monkey head I would guess that all of the prize copy and calldowns were prerecorded.  And since nobody knew the contestants names at the time of recording, they likely came up with the "Pat" gag as a solution.

Like Stephanie said, He was probably backstage doing the announcing. In regards to the Pat gag, I really doubt that no one on staff didn't know any of the audience member's names. Something like that would make the staff look really incompetant.

Plinko:  Nice haul! :-)
One Away:  Rats! :-(  I liked how they had Mimi doing the horn.
Pick A Pair:  Nice job! :-)  Interesting item theme, too.
Range Game:  Almost dead center - wow! :-)  I liked Rachel as the stagehand.
Lucky Seven:  Very well played! :-)
Double Prices:  Good job! :-)
Showcases:  That was neat how the showcases were the same till the end.

Great show today, IMHO.

Either that, or Rich did the announcing live from a hidden corner backstage, because we saw him do little cameo spots during the second half (like during Range Game when he walked across the set on a cell phone)

If you look really closely, he was wearing a lav mic.  I don't see why he'd need a lav mic to just walk across the stage, so I think you may have it!

As for what I thought of the show, I have to say it was a lot different than I thought it was going to be--although I would've changed the whole "Pat" routine.  To me, that got old really quick and became borderline annoying with each subsequent calldown after One-Bid 2.

Now for Mimi.  Last year's show was a perfect example of how to integrate Mimi into the show the right way.  I didn't find Mimi distracting in the least during last year's show.  This year, we got "The Mimi Bobeck Show starring The Price is Right".  The whole dialog at the beginning of the show and during Showcase #2 detracted from what was supposed to be going on, IMO.  To me, it felt like they were more intent on whatever the storyline happened to be at the moment rather than focusing on gameplay.  The bit during One Away was semi-appropriate, as it integrated the gameplay with the dialog.  If I had to choose between gameplay and a storyline and simple gameplay, though, I'd choose simple gameplay any day.  It's less confusing for Joe Plinkos and LFATs alike.

Did I think the show was end-of-the-world terrible?  No.  A 5-out-of-6 day is always a good day to me.  Did I think what they did could have been retooled to be less detracting from the actual gameplay?  Yes, with a huge nod to last year, as to say, "this is how you execute an April Fools' Day show properly without getting too distracting."

Let's just say that every special show should be set up like this.

I 1000% agree with you on this.  Let's hope they do this for the next themed show they have coming up, which Buzzerblog is now reporting is another bridal shower show.  Hope that's not a spoiler.

I think it would have been hilarious if the final contestant called up would be the only one with a different first name, like Englebert.

Too bad Pat from SC#2 didn't realize that all he was really bidding on was the convertible, and then tacking on a little extra money to his opponent's bid... unless he really thought that was a $15000 car.

Maybe Pat from SC#2 thought Pat from SC#1 overbid.  Pat (#2) might have known the convertible was about $20,000 and the other Pat overbid by $5,000 (or something like that).

When Drew made his joke about never making a mistake, you can hear Rich laughing at the ad-lib.  They certainly would not have prerecorded that.

Now the Pat thing, well...It could have been so much worse.   It just wasn't funny.   Might have been better if they used Ezekial, but that wouldn't have been a unisex name.

I'm sort of dissappointed they didn't mess with the sound effects or the music.    I really wanted to hear the Match Game "think" music when the range finder was going up.

Oh well, guess I had such high hopes.

And because everybody in the audience was named "Pat" (probably as an ode to Pat Sajak or Pat O'Brien), I think the real names of the contestants coming on down were all on cue cards.

Not surprising to most, here's my take:

My name is not Pat it's William and by cracky had they waited until THIS episode to call me, believe me the world would have known it was William.  We really could have done without it.  Also probably could have done without Rich being replaced by a monkey and I'd love to know what he thought about that.  And I'm sorry, but Mimi didn't need to be there or mention him making mistakes and then never have her call him out on anything, even if it was miniscule.

On the other hand, the 2nd showcase WAS THE FRIGGIN BOMB!  That was totally cool and it had the entire chatroom fooled top to bottom until the 2nd car was shown.  That's how you do it Mike.

In closing, after seeing Drew's last few days and looking like he was actually, with a slight few exceptions finally (snaps fingers Richard Dawson-Running Man-style) "getting it", this happens.  Sure his hosting was good, but the Pat crap totally made this show blow and blow hard.

I guess I'm too observant sometimes: during the 2nd showcase, I knew the 2nd car was coming because I could see the reflection of "The City" (that's what I call that car backdrop behind the Mini Cooper) flashing in the side of the truck. Also, the showcase reveal was a little anti-climactic: I figured out Pat #7 had won his showcase even before Drew stepped over to read Pat #3's ARP....and I think Pat #3 figured it out at the same time too based on his expression.

Other than that and the whole "Pat" overkill, I'd say the show pulled itself back nicely from last year's episode.

That was the funnest and best price episode ever.  Drew did a great job host (it takes mimi to get him to host good).  the only thing I did not like was the pat over kill.

Well luckily I was there Tuesday and can attest that Television City is still standing following the taping of this episode. I've been told the sky is still intact as well.

As expected, I thoroughly enjoyed this show. The Plinko SP's were set up beautifully, and that contestant should've gotten all 5 chips. (C'mon, who thinks a Snuggie is $50?!)

Those showcases... I was laughing all the way through to the end of SC#2. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

I don't see how the "Pat" thing is enough to ruin the entire show for somebody. Honestly.

Ok, I knew something was starting as soon as Rich said, "(Just) Pat, Come on Down!"...

Plinko: I made a correct call saying the last prize was The Clapper. I like how this turned out to be a LOSS!

One Away: Oh no. You Mean Mimi's The Mighty Sound Effects Lady the whole time? Maybe not.

pick a pair, yes the holiday mix seemed like it was going to happen on another show

Range Game: After recently putting up that dollar-loss, for some reason, I was expecting a loss here. I must be on something to think that.

Lucky $even: Still having all seven dollars after the third number sounds like it was going to be won. Still, picking 5 down the end seemed a little risky. Something about that edited close-up, though.

One Bid 6: That's it. After seeing the Francesco Rinaldi sauce every month for the past several years on Price and the From-1980-to-today commercial sometimes prior to Price, I want to try some now. A fresh jar, though. There's no telling if Pat gonna have some from the 1980 label...

Double Prices: Well, ya gotta put in a little time-shaver for a show this good...

Showcases: For a moment, I thought it would be a duplicate Showcase segment or the second Showcase would be replaced with a expensive vehicle or something, not an additional vehicle. Still good, though.

Well, it did not have the impact of last year's but it was still good enough for me to lol and get on my knees to the Mighty Mimi. Good.

How the hell did they move the turntable for Lucky Seven You Beeyotches with Mimi still on it?

Nice to see the models actually worked into the show. Happy anniversary, Manuela! (One year as a rotation model)

Best win of the day had to be Pick-a-Pair, with those proprietary seasonal items in the mix. And thank you, Drew, for not attempting to eat six-month-old cookie dough.

They always have 2 cue cards, one for each side of the stage. It's too loud in there to hear your name. =)

Lucky $even: Still having all seven dollars after the third number sounds like it was going to be won. Still, picking 5 down the end seemed a little risky. Something about that edited close-up, though.

How was that risky? She had $5 left, meaning she could lose 4 and still win the car. By choosing 5, the only way she could have lost was if the last number was 0. When was the last time you saw a 0 in Lucky $even?

Noticed that edit too. Looked like an edit, anyway. Maybe the door got stuck the first time and they had to reshoot it or something.

Biggest laugh of the day: Rachel pushing the Big Wheel into place during the CC plug.

Eh, what's up, Doc?  I must tell you that this episode was very hilarious.  Kathy Kinney (Mimi Bobeck) as the role of the executive producer - that was a funny!  And having male models - men of different ages, shapes, unique talents, etc. - was very rare.

Of course, learning that the men were modeling the show on that episode, it would have been nice if the remaining two regular rotating models would play the role of host and announcer - Lanisha Cole and Amber Lancaster respectively.  I said that because, as Joe posted, Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith played the role of the page, Manuela Arbelaez as the commoner, and Rachel Reynolds as the stagehand.  But I have to admit that Drew Carey fell for Mimi's comedies, including the Showcases.  Rich Fields brought us a great deal of double comedy - playing the role of a monkey and a frustrated businessman.

And today's episode had greatly improved from yesterday - from a disastrous winless show (with the exception of an $11,000 win on the Big Wheel) to a show that brought in a majority of wins and the highest record in total winnings this season!  Th-th-th-that's all Folks!

I've got a question about the male models.  Who are they?  People associated with the show, famous people, people pulled off from the street?  (I have a feeling it's the first one but if anyone could be any more specific, I'd appreciate it.)

OK, shoot me, but I actually liked this episode better than last year. I realized when watching this back, if anything, last year felt a little too over the top to me (Cliffhangers music during the Wheel spinning? Funny. Random boing noises? Just strange and a little much.) I can't speak for what was edited out of the show today (and it appeared to be quite a substantial amount), but if anything at least it shows editing genius on the part of The Price Is Right, that they were able to patch together a pretty darn good show. Having easy setups that produced lots of wins (only the 2nd 5+ win day of the season) helped too! Notably today's show was a minute longer than normal even with the ticket and CNAOS plugs removed and that just shows how much of a time crunch we're in these days.

Everybody else has already said everything so I'll just say that my favorite parts of the episode were the grandfather clock in the row during the one-bid, Rachel as Big Dave, etc. and especially the showcases! THAT is how you do it, Mike, as Willy said - that was just an awesome surprise. I actually was talking to a friend yesterday and said that they'd play One Away today and Mimi would be the sound effects lady, and that was a fun idea (love the steering wheel!). I didn't find the "Pat" thing as annoying as some others - if anything, I found it LESS distracting than the masks. Lineup was a bit short but decent enough for the kind of day we had. Overall, I just really enjoyed this episode, between the subtle gags, the winning and especially the showcases, and was very pleasantly surprised by what I saw. This was not another Wagner because Drew played the straight guy and because they limited the "story" parts a bit more and I would not recommend them trying to force any more of a "story" into a Price episode than they did today (nor would I recommend doing this more than the once or twice a year). But this was still fun, and I laughed out loud more times than I did last year! Just my opinion.

Timings:
Plinko (5.5) - 4:33
One Away (5) - 5:19
Pick A Pair (4.5) - 3:54
Range Game (4) - 3:46
Lucky $even (4.5) - 4:07
Double Prices (3) - 2:53
Total time (26.5): 24:34

Well, this certainly was a mixed bag of a show.  It wasn't the disaster I was afraid it was going to be...although I have a feeling that's because most of the disastrous stuff was edited out (there was clearly a ton of editing today).  The thing is, though...it was good more in spite of the April Fool's stuff than because of it.  A lot of it felt out of place, and I think parts of it that were needed for it to make sense got edited out.

Let's get the worst part of the show out of the way first:  "Pat."  That was just plain stupid.  It made the come on downs sound ridiculous, especially without having any last names; it made Contestants' Row hard to follow; and we now have no real way of distinguishing the contestants from one another, because we don't know any of their names!

I'd also like to know what was going on with Rich.  There was clearly some plotline that was supposed to be taking place with him wandering around during the second half, but it seems like most of it got edited out.  It was also kind of odd that even though in the context of this episode, Rich was supposed to be distinct from the monkey, Drew kept calling the monkey "Rich Fields."

Mimi running One Away was an example of what my dad calls "The 'Looks Good on Paper' Rule;" I'm sure it sounded funny while they were brainstorming ideas, but they didn't synch the sounds with her steering wheel very well, and I think I can now safely say that One Away works better with sounds than visuals, anyway.

On top of those things, I don't think Drew hosted very well today, and I think it was entirely because of the April Fool's stuff.  There was too much going on in the background, and he kept getting distracted and falling back into old habits we haven't been seeing recently.  What little humor came out of their gags wasn't worth the toll it took on his performance.

That said, there were some genuinely funny things today.  I chuckled at Gwendolyn the page and Big Rachel, I was happy to see that somebody finally realized a "special" episode should have easy setups, and I liked the grandfather clock coming into Contestants' Row for the sixth Item up for Bids.  The best part, though, was definitely the Showcase, which was executed perfectly.  They had me hook, line, and sinker with that...it looked in every way like it was going to be a badly-planned disaster and ended up having one of the most awesome reveals in ages.  The only criticism I have is that they should have revealed the second showcase's price first; the way they did it, it was obvious as soon as the Top Winner's price was revealed that the Runner-Up had no chance.

The pricing games were fun, too...Plinko was awesome, Pick-a-Pair actually got played, and Lucky $even was set up for a win for once.  The themed groceries in Pick-a-Pair worked, too, because they fit the episode and Drew didn't make an effort to point them out.

So it was a decent show...it just wasn't that way on account of anything in the Mimi plotline.

This was way better than last year's April Fools' show... it was much more thought out and well-planned.

No...I'm sorry, but regardless of how things played out, I can tell you for a fact that last year's show was planned better.

It sounded to me like the calldowns were edited in.  Maybe they had their real names called in the studio.

I will confirm that the calldowns were edited in (or just edited, really), but that isn't the reason why.

Thanks to CBS' press site I've put names to players, at least five of them...(in order of appearance)

Pl!nko! Pat:  Rebecca Jimenez
Pick A Pair Pat: Maija Collins
Range Game Pat: Bryan Jones
Lucky $even Pat: Jillian Brockhohn
Double Prices Pat: Brent Scarpa

The rest will remain a mystery unless someone at the network or the production company decides otherwise.

I agree their names should have been listed at some point in the proceedings.

Am I the only person here who still sees the rather significant problem with the showcases?

"Hmmm...my showcase is the same as his, except mine has a Mini Cooper Convertible included; his bid is low (considering it includes a truck and a trip to Rome), so I'll just add what I think is the price of the Cooper to his bid, and add a few thousand extra just in case I'm low."

If they're going to give away the same prizes in both showcases, maybe they should have considered changing the rules and having the players write down their bids.  (No, wait, that's just as bad of an idea, because it deprives the second player of seeing if the first player's bid was over and then bidding $420 (has that ever happened in a showcase?) $1.

Another thought was to make the showcases slightly different (for example, one has an extra night for the Rome trip, while the other has first class flights to/from Cabo), but that would ruin the whole "You can't make both of the showcases the same!" joke.

(And they missed one opportunity: when they called "Pat" for the final IUFB, they should have had a number of people come down, all claiming to be "the" Pat...)

Fun. It's a good thing.
I heartily agree with the above.

I generally liked the episode. I thought James (the short, stocky guy) was the best male model. Don't bash the regular models, though, Mimi.  You needed the four guys to do the work of three women. I thought the Pat thing was cool, except for one aspect: hearing the sound "Pat" so many times wore thin. If they had kept the Pat gimmick for the call-downs and name tags, but had Drew refer to contestants as pal, dude, friend, sweetie, ma'am, sir, etc. at various times instead of so many repetitions of Pat, it would have been fine.

Quote
Nice to see the models actually worked into the show. Happy anniversary, Manuela! (One year as a rotation model)
I'll second that. Yah!  :-D  I liked how Manuela obsessively yelled "one dollar" during the One-Bids - really getting into her role. I think Gwen got the short end of the stick as far as how the regular models were used on the show. I don't remember them giving her anything funny to do in the show. However, there's a faux behind the scenes video on the official site. Gwen, in her role as a page, is the most prominent model in the video.

I can't make up my mind which April Fools episode I prefer. I think this one was more ambitious that last year's for both good and ill. There were some cool things this year with the big concepts. On the other hand, some of the very simple gags from last year (like the turntable that wouldn't stop spinning) were really entertaining in their simplicity.

Today was an awesome show. Kudos to the staff once again on a great show. I found the male models quite entertaining. It was hilarious watching James model the jewelry and fragrances. All of them were quite good and entertaining. I have to admit there were some things done last year that I figured could possibly happen but didn't. One being the wheel sounds while it was spinning, the other, using the match game cue at the end.

On to the games...

Plinko- no excuse for not getting all five today, but the $21,000 made up for that.

One away- great job begging to Mimi

PaP- okay I'm usually irritated with the GP game themes, but I'll let it go for today.

Lucky 7- boy Rachel was sure earning her money today. Great win though by "pat"

showcases- was anyone else afraid Drew would hurt himself once again when he rode the turntable?

Today's show gets an A++.

Well. If there was ever an argument that they're trying to make this show more like The Drew Carey Show and less like The Price is Right, I guess this is it. It's like they used up all of their April Fools ideas last year and decided to just recycle the Mimi thing again, except for longer. Game shows and plot lines don't mix, which the producers seemed to realize about halfway through the episode. But once they realized that, they didn't have anything else to do.

I agree with those who say that the "Pat" thing shouldn't have been done.  For both April Fools shows, they've done something to strip the contestants of their identity. Next year, I assume that each contestant's face will be concealed by a blue dot at all times.

I'm glad to see they figured out that, unlike previous special episodes they've done this year, Plinko works a lot better if the chips are winnable. That was exactly the setup those prizes should have had. In fact, I was glad to see that they didn't use any misleading or tricky setups for this episode. They shouldn't be regularly using tricky setups in any episode, but especially for a promotable episode like this, it makes sense that everything was set up to be especially easy to win.

I haven't seen enough episodes with the combined first and second games to know if I like it on a regular basis, but when you combine Plinko and One Away, the first show segment goes on for a very long time.

The holiday theme in Pick-a-Pair was cute, but if Mimi is the one in charge, shouldn't the groceries all be make-up and glitter and things like that?

They were so worried about making sure we saw Rachel push out the car in Lucky $even that we completely missed seeing the contestant's reaction to the car. The contestants, I might remind the show's producers, are what make the show interesting.

I know Drew's only been a game show host for two and a half years now, so I guess I shouldn't expect him to have learned the subtler points of hosting. For example, if part of a pricing game involves a contestant asking the sound effects lady if he has three and four numbers right, the microphone should be pointed somewhere in the contestant's general direction. That's not the kind of thing Drew should have been able to pick up by the end of his first week or so.

In all, I'd have to say that they didn't go overboard with the Mimi thing. Once they got to the third pricing game, they pretty much gave up on the plot altogether until the showcase... for most of the show, Mimi didn't do anything other than sit in the background to help latecomers understand why there were male models. At least they knew not to try to milk the concept for more than it was worth. The male models were funny and kept being interesting for the entire hour, so that was good.

But really, that's all this episode boils down to: an extended appearance by Mimi, entertaining antics with the male models, and only a couple other random elements that were more confusing than they were funny. Which means that as an April Fools episode, especially compared to last year, this was fairly weak. In all honesty, it wasn't a bad episode, except for the "Pat" thing, but I guess I was expecting more.

Good show... seemed a little more subdued than last year's, and I would have liked to see more fooling with the sound effects (or at least a few more nods to game-show geeks, like we saw last year). Nice to see a 5/6 show too. I wasn't as bothered by the "Pat" thing as other posters seem to be; as a whole-audience gag, it was substantially less distracting to me (or the audience, I assume) than the Groucho glasses from last year.

I liked the Mimi subplot, especially the monkey suit announcer and the male models. I would have killed for just one "Bite me, pig!" though.

I did notice one thing that put me off: at the end of the show, Drew broke the fourth wall by referring to Mimi as Kathy Kinney and plugging her book. Today's show was doing such a good job of creating a story for the audience at home until this moment.

This was the first episode of TPIR since Drew Carey took over that I've actually enjoyed. The reason was that Drew was in his element. It was a scripted comedy show which is what he's used to, so he ended up so much better than he normally is. I knew the whole time I was watching it people here would be saying stuff like "This person's not getting their one chance on The Price Is Right to have their name said, this is the worst thing ever!" and "Rich is in a monkey suit, that's totally awful!" People here take the show too seriously. If they want to have a little fun while winning prizes, why not? It's all worth it if it makes Drew suddenly turn into a funny comic instead of a bumbling host. Sure, he wasn't great when doing the hosting stuff, he never will be. But the humor more than made up for it.

Well done, Price staff. This is how to make Drew look good.

Well at that point the show was over, so I don't think it was that big a deal. It would be sort of rude to not acknowledge her. I was a little surprised he didn't acknowledge the male models though in turn.

Here's my review of this episode:

Fools in April, Season 38

The Pat gag: Its like the Groucho Marx glasses. Yes, it was drooled out a bit, but Mimi made it more interesting to why this was done. I do think this was much better put together than the Grouchos though.

Rich the Monkey: It looks funny and I have a feeling this was voiced-over a bit.

Games: Well put together. I like the fact we had 0 turntable games and over 80K in games.

Showcases: Well that was a bit weird. I do like the interaction between Drew and Mimi on this one.

The models: The Jamaican-esque guy. If you could see his face, it wasn't easy.
The Mugger-esque. Funny, but not the man you want modeling jewelry.
The Oren-esque. Department Oren from Dodgeball Department
The old man: That beard fake?
I do think this made a funny part, especially what they did to Gwen, Manuela and Rachel, which I give the ideas credit.

In comparison to Fools in April, Season 37:

I did notice they used the same Howard Miller Floor Clock as from Most Expensive's Triple-Floor Clock on April 1, 2009.

I liked the prize destruction a bit more from Season 37, something there should have been more of.

I also liked the strange beeps on the Season 37 one, but obviously not implemented.

Best contestant of the day: Who knows at this point? All we know is that his or her name is Pat.
Show grade: Despite the pre-show bad reviews that were popping up, I do believe this earns a B+ in my book. It was well-scripted and nothing on the fly.

I know it would have been a network crossover, but they've been done before, but I would have loved to have seen an appearance by Julia Sweeney as Pat....

I totally disagree.  Drew can be a good host; he just isn't most of the time.  The last week or so, he's been doing a pretty decent job, and all the distractions on this episode caused that to fly out the window for the day.  I just hope he's back on top of his game today (stupid thing to post during the day's broadcast, I know, but I'm watching it on tape tonight because I have to go to work in a few minutes).

It wasn't the disaster I was afraid it was going to be...although I have a feeling that's because most of the disastrous stuff was edited out (there was clearly a ton of editing today).

I noticed they edited out the turntable motor noise when Mimi first spun around on the air version.  It was left in the preview clip.

I would have loved to have seen an appearance by Julia Sweeney as Pat....

She's made it pretty clear she's not interested in performing Pat again.  Also, Julia lives in Illinois now... that would be a pretty expensive cameo to pull off.

It sounded to me like the calldowns were edited in.  Maybe they had their real names called in the studio.

The call downs were edited in just two days before this show aired.  Originally, I understand that the calldown was phrased:  "Pat, Move it!" for each of the 9 contestants.  A decision was made to change it to "Pat, Come on Down" just recently, resulting in some costly editing expenses.

I don't know how people can say that this show was better than last years.  There was really nowhere to go but down after that amazing show.

This one passed, but the Pat joke was really bad.  When Mimi has to explain the joke, you know it doesn't work.

I was glad to see that Kathy/Kathy decided to make the setups fairly easy.

Although the themed products might be funny today, I would like to see them less on regular shows (still keep Scott employed though).

The One Away bit was funny, as were the male models and the hiding of the real models throughout the show.

The second showcase fooled me, and was probably one of the best things on the show this year.

On the other hand, the 2nd showcase WAS THE FRIGGIN BOMB...[Drew's] hosting was good.
The Pat crap totally made this show blow and blow hard.

Those are mutually exculsive.  I guess you didn't like the show at all, but liked parts?

I guess I have a good ear then.  I'm glad they changed it.  It would have sounded too rude the other way.

Did anybody else notice that it looked like every Pat in the audience got a free copy of Kathy Kinney's book?

I can't believe so many people are so pissed off at the "Pat" gag... It was April 1st! The whole idea of this day is to pull pranks and keep people off balance. I liked the idea of the gag running throughout the whole show. The entire show was tongue planted firmly in cheek, the best example of that being the male models. For years, people have asked and even demanded the show have men model the prizes. This episode was the show's way of saying with a wink and a smile, "do you really want the Beauties replaced with men?" I felt this year's episode was much more purposely subtle in the humour, compared to last year's zaniness.

Am I the only person here who still sees the rather significant problem with the showcases?

You're absolutely right....if this were to go beyond one day.

In chat, I recall Willy made a comment that if Pat #2 were a LFAT, then he would bid the same as Pat #1.  It struck me how incredibly awesome that would be....until they revealed the MINI.

So, there are some interesting strategic arguments for a case like this.  But, given it was just one day, are they really worth going over?

I can't believe so many people are so pissed off at the "Pat" gag... It was April 1st! The whole idea of this day is to pull pranks and keep people off balance.

If you have read all the comments above, it should be clear to you that even the producers had second thoughts about the gag.  Just ask yourself if you would feel OK with being called Pat on national television, your one chance to shine on TV.  And if you still think it is cute, then so be it.

Loved the models.  Loved SC2.  One Away made me chuckle some.  Pat annoyed me.

This episode is reairing right now in the Eastern time zone.  It'll be the rerun for the rest of the country as well.

Here in LA area, it's prempted because the local news is covering pre-Lakers championship parade that will take place later.  Maybe they'll show the episode afterwards?

I doubt it seeing as it's a rerun anyways and it wasn't a nationwide preemption.. It's not that special of an epside anyways..

Because of this repeat I just ordered a set of that Heys luggage (for SIGNIFICANTLY less on Amazon) so that can be filed under the "things you've bought because of PIR" category.
