Title: PatrickRox80's The Price is Right: Seasons (1972 - THE END)
Post by: PatrickRox80 on July 20, 2019, 01:32:21 PM
(NOTE: Due an upcoming vacation starting two weeks from today, cu has granted me permission to post sign-ups now. I will not begin this show any earlier than the conclusion of 123's episode.)

Weeeeeeeeelllll, it's been quite a while for me, hasn't it? 13½ years as a matter of fact! Things have changed with the real deal quite a lot since which gave me half the inspiration to call my HYO theme "Seasons". The gist of this is theming each HYO as a reflection of yesteryear, starting from the beginning with 1972. As such, this episode will use the half-hour format.

Ground Rules:
-I will PM you if you've been chosen to "Come on down!" I will also send you a PM if you've made it to the Showcase.
-All deadlines are 24 hours. Miss once during the One Bid and it's an automatic pass. Miss a second One Bid and you'll be ejected with another contestant called down to take your place. Miss a deadline during a pricing game and it's an automatic loss. Miss during the Showcases and you'll lose your chance to bid. If you become a repeat offender with missing deadlines, I may bar you from participation depending on the severity.
-If timing is an issue for you, send me a PM and we'll work things out.
-Audience participation is encouraged.
-Have fun!

The last time I did an HYO, I didn't do an interview question because TMK nobody did them at the time. Answering this is not required but I do recommend it if you want a first four spot. The people who give me the best answers will have top priority. Here's the situation:

It's 1972 and you're answering a phone call. Remember that job application as a page for CBS you sent? You're hired! The catch is, they want you to start working immediately. Off you go to Studio 33 where you've been given your first assignment: come up with a showcase with prizes they think will be built to last. In other words, come up with the most 1972-ish showcase possible: prizes you'd never see 47 years afterward.

I will start this episode at approximately 7:00 PM EST on July 23 or after 123's episode ends, whichever comes later. Sign-ups will be closed 72 hours after this post unless I don't have at least seven people in the audience pool.

With that, who's in?

My goodness, we're doing loads of flashbacks, aren't we?  :-D Not that I mind; we need more classic HYO episode flashbacks. I'm absolutely in!  :-)

Here's the showcase:

This showcase is all about the grooviest pad for you to boogie-oogie in! And in order to have it, you've gotta have the most far out party gadget in the world: this new disco ball!

[Disco Ball cue + description]

Next, you've gotta have a totally tubular time... watching the boob tube: this new Spiegel Catalogue TV!

[Catalogue TV cue + description]

And finally, if you've gotta Audi 5000 to your gig, you can cruise down the road in a ride that'll never die: it's your new Ford Pinto!

[Ford Pinto cue + description]

And this far out showcase, in which we ask: 'can you dig it?' can be yours if The Price is Right!

I'm in, love the idea of going year by year in the HYOs! Also, I really need to make it out of Contestant's Row at some point.

As for a Showcase...

This Showcase contains prizes that have a certain snap to them! And it starts with you snapping some pictures with this new camera! The Kodak pocket Instamatic 110 (rest of description)…

Next, you'll be snapping your fingers to the beat of the music for hours listening your new 8-track player! (prize description)

Finally, we're sure you'll find this last prize to be, well, snappy... your new Trans Am! The 1972 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am second generation (rest of description)

And this Showcase can yours in a snap, and if the Price is Right!

This showcase is all about things that are fast. I mean, really fast. First, this supply of floppy disks! From Memorex, these floppy disks can store all your documents, instead of the Cloud. They're outdated, but who cares!

*applause*

Next, you can use these floppy disks in conjunction with this new personal computer! From Kenbak Corporation, this Kenbak-1 computer has 256 bytes of memory.

*applause*

While you're waiting for that two hour movie to download...

"Read War and Peace 84 times."

Shut up, you! Anyway, don't do that because that isn't a long enough time anyway. But you can take a ride...

...in your new CAR!!! This is the *blazing fast* Volkswagen Super Beetle [rest of description]

And with this showcase you will blaze a path to victory, but only if, The Price is Right!

*steps out of time machine*

What's this? Kenbak-1 computer, huh? Must've accidentally taken it with me back to 2019. See, the movie is still downloading! How much progress does it have? Let's see...

PROGRESS: 0.000001%

I'm in!

Your showcase features prizes reflecting the unchangable celebrities of the present!

Although he likes to joke around, earlier this year, the legendary comedian Bill Cosby won a Grammy award for warning children about the serious dangers of psychedelic drugs. Now, you can listen to his best works with this innovative turntable!

The Technics SL-1200 is a magnetic, direct-drive turntable, which features high torque, and wow and flutter staying at 1/100th of 1% of the intended speed! Also included are five studio albums featuring the riot of today, Bill Cosby!

Next, we look upon the life of Bruce Lee. As a 32-year-old, he certainly has a lifetime ahead of him. This year, we saw an exciting preformance this year in
The Chinese Connection, where he shined after last year's Fists of Fury. You won't have to avenge any deaths, however, on your trip to beautiful Shanghai!

You and a guest will fly roundtrip coach to the at the Hung Chiao Airport. Don't worry about communism; but take it in with a grain of SALT. You will spend six nights at the Anti-Imperialism Building Shanghai Mansions Hotel, where you can take in the joys of China. We'll also throw in a couple thousand yuan while we are at it!

Finally, talking about modern legends wouldn't be complete without mentioning our current president, Richard Nixon. You may have heard from his Checkers speech about his car, but now you can own your very own... Oldsmobile!

It's the 1972 Oldsmobile Nighty-Eight 4-door hardtop. Comes with standarad equipment, dual ashtrays, power breaks with front disks, electric clock, spare tire cover, and Turbo-Hydramic transmission. It's the Oldsmobile 98!

And this showcase, featuring legends who certainly will be remembered as live, active members of society in 47 years, can be yours, but only if The Price is Right!

tpir04, stand up!

DarkShockBro, stand up!

TPIRfan#9821, stand up!

JayC, stand up!

And all four of you, COME ON DOWN! You're the first contestants on
The New Price is Right!

*1972 Main Theme*

And now, here is the star of The New Price is Right, PatrickRox80!

*stands behind door number two as it opens, then jogs out on stage, accepts mic from Anitra and bows*

Me: Welcome! Yes, you heard right! I am back in the saddle! I want to thank the staff here for giving me the opportunity to do this once more and of course all you contestants down here for making this possible. Now, it's my turn. This is the first of what will be a series of snapshots of The Price is Right through the years. What better way to start than with 1972?

Of course, we can't do this without giving away some prizes. Let's start with an item up for bids. George, what do you have for us?

George: A home theater and soundbars!

From Bose, the finest in state of the art entertainment, experience the thrills of a theater in your own home. This 5.1-channel speaker system delivers the ultimate sound performance with its wireless compact subwoofers. Both soundbars come with a universal remote so controlling everything is no problem. Also features a built-in Alexa system, just ask her to play anything you want through Spotify or Bluetooth and Alexa will get right to work.

Me: A couple of spiels to get through before we start the bidding. I will present that to the contestant who comes nearest to the actual retail price without going over. I advise you to bid in dollars because we round all our prices to the nearest dollar. Also, this may be the episode based on 1972, but I will still offer $500 to the contestant who gets it right on the nose.

tpir04, you have the honor of bidding first. What's your bid?

$1,001!

*ding*

Are you going to buy tpir04 a beer for that?

*laughter*

Anyway, the actual retail price of the home theater and speakers is... $2,080!

*bell sequence, 1972 Walking*

TPIRfan#9821, you are the winner! You get to join me onstage. Watch your step, that floor there is moving. That's why we call that the turntable. It's showing all of us the first pricing game...

You may know this better as the Bonus Game but the board it having a little case of amnesia. It doesn't know what it's called! In a moment, I'm going to show you four prizes. The more you know about them, the better chance you have of winning this!

George: An excursion in the Galapagos Islands!

You and a guest will fly round trip coach to Quito, Ecuador. From there, you will embark on a five-day Galapagos Cruise courtesy of Adventure Life where you can experience all the flora and fauna of these islands of biodiversity. Also enjoy swimming and snorkeling with wildlife in the crystalline waters of the Pacific. A great prize worth $8,648!

Me: Wouldn't you love to go there, TPIRfan#9821? That sounds like the trip of a lifetime. To get there, you need to win yourself some prizes. We start all the way at the top...

...with a life vest. George?

(https://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi5.walmartimages.com%2Fasr%2Fdcdb655c-2b7d-4c75-969c-70dc593a52e6_1.747a0e6d7bac62f77da569965d6bfc60.jpeg%3FodnHeight%3D450%26odnWidth%3D450%26odnBg%3DFFFFFF&f=1)

George: This O'Neill men's life vest fits comfortably and will keep you safe when you're doing all your favorite aquatic activities.

Me: Now, you see that $70 price up top? Believe it or not, that price is wrong. To win the life vest and a chance at that trip, you need to tell me whether the correct price is higher or lower. What do you say, TPIRfan#9821?

(Side note: JayC's bid was late but I let it slide since it did not affect the outcome.)

Incorrect. We have to slide this back into oblivion.

That doesn't mean you can't try again. We'll move on forward with prize number two.

It's a pair of binoculars. Listen to George.

George: Explore the world beyond with this pair of Bushnell Legend L-Series binoculars. They measure 10 x 42 millimeter and allow a 340-feet field of view.

Me: As before, $250 is wrong. Is the retail price higher or lower than that, TPIRfan#9821?

Three up, three down. Unfortunately, that phrase isn't in your favor. Let's put that aside and try to get this last prize...

I just hope these headphones are harmless. Is that right, George?

George: It's a pair of noise-cancelling headphones from Sony. Not only is that where Mike Richards is going, these headphones fit over your ears so you can enjoy playback without the ambience.

Me: Now, this is it. You must get this right or the game ends. Higher or lower than $240, TPIRfan#9821?

No! Well, couldn't have helped that after you got that first prize wrong. A tough break but you got some headphones out of it. We may see you in the showcases later on.

George?

George: Yes, Kevin?

Me: You know, I haven't gotten the chance to go one-on-one with you just yet.

George: I know what's coming.

Me: I'll be frank then. What is it?

George: You're going to ask how I should fill in that vacant spot in Contestant's Row.

Me: No, I'm going to ask how you will fill in that vacant spot in Contestant's Row. There is a difference.

George: In that case, why didn't you say so? I say we should let gamesurf sit there. Come on down! You are the next contestant on The New Price is Right!

gamesurf, that spot is calling your name. Now that we have four people, Anitra and Janice are wheeling the next item up for bids on stage.

George: A DJ booth!

From Pioneer DJ, the DDJ1000 turntable system will make you the hit at your next party. Mix tracks with its four channels, fourteen beat effects and double-decked sixteen multicoloured Performance Pads. It also features full-size jog wheels with a Jog On display so you don't have to check other plugged-in devices.

DarkShockBro, you have won! It's your turn to play a pricing game. Follow me up these steps, same ones as before. Look what we have spinning on the turntable for you...

Does this game look familiar? It should, but if not we have a prize that should jog your memory. I want the audience to see you going nuts when we show you what it is. Look over at those doors!

George: It's a new Cadillac!

George: A brand new 2019 Cadillac CTS! Performance-enhanced design worthy of the Cadillac name for its remarkable driving experience. This four-wheel drive vehicle comes with a 3.6-Liter V6 engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, rear camera mirror, magnetic ride control and 18" machine-finished wheels, the Cadillac CTS!

Me: And what you must do to win the Cadillac is tell me its exact price. It looks daunting but we all believe in you. After each guess, I will tell you whether the actual retail price is higher or lower if you are incorrect. You have seven guesses total, as indicated by the numbers on the board. I'm actually going to help you out by spotting you the last number in the car's price: it's zero. Be sure every guess ends in the number zero.

With that in mind, what is your first guess, DarkShockBro?

*gets Bullseye I with zero given range*

Seriously, good luck. I think the CTS is one of the lower-end Cadillacs, but that still leaves it anywhere from $50K to $60K. Those options don't look CRAZY expensive so if I were forced to guess it might be closer to the lower $50K range, but I'm nowhere near certain. Best of luck!

What is the trim level of this CTS out of curiosity?  I imagine that would help DarkShockBro a bit.
Also, the image you put up looks like a rendering of a CTS coupe, but only the sedan is in production for 2019.

And PEANUT GALLERY:
If I remember correctly, the base CTS is about $47,000 or $48,000, but the options (and potentially that engine cause I think the base engine is a 2.0L) could push it past that.

...I seriously feel like GSF is really off. If at worse the base of the car is $48,000, I feel that the engine adds at least $5k. On a tour of the Corvette Factory I took a few years back, the difference between engines was about $5,000. In addition, those accessories sound expensive, so I'd guess around $3k-$4k. My next guess after this one would be $57,000ish.

Don't think anybody expecting (or necessarily wanted  :-D) Bullseye I to show up. Logically speaking, you should still try and split the range in half. But logic might go out the window at this point.

With two guesses left, I'd make a guess close to the edge of your existing range and hope you get a relatively decent range. But that's just me rambling from the crowd.  :-)

No, I mean that I second-guessed myself in that I edited my guess from $60,000 to $60,750 because I thought it was higher than $60,000 and wanted to keep with my $2,000 differential in my guesses.

Apparently you aren't allowed to do that. I understand why, but I completely didn't realize that was a rule. You can DQ me if you want. It's just a game, after all, so idc.

I'm leaving this up to the mods. Having already sent PM's to cu, Adam and PtR, I'll see what they have to say about it. Since we're already pretty far into the game, I'm tempted to call it an instant loss for disobeying the rule.

Fair enough. In any case, I can confirm that wasn't intentional, I didn't know that was a rule at all, and if I did, I would've just left that guess up.

As I said, if it were up to me, I'd ring this up as an instant loss, you seem to support my position, and I can't see the mods coming up with another decision, but I completely understand if you want to make sure you have their approval in this instance. I do apologize; I had no intention of placing you in this type of position. ^^;

Per the timestamp on the post in question by DSB, the edit came prior to any succeeding posts.  Given that (plus the fact that there was an established pattern of $--,750), I’m OK with letting it slide this time.  CU might say different, idk...but for all intents and purposes, continue on with $60,750 so the show can keep moving forward.  Just don’t let it happen again. :)

Right next door is the runner-up TPIRfan#9821.

I trust you both know how the Showcases work. 123123123, since you won more, you have the option of bidding on this first showcase or passing it to TPIRfan#9821 and waiting for the next. Here is showcase number one!

George: This showcase contains prizes revealed as we have fun with sights and sounds.

First, let's talk about the sights you'll be treasuring forever with this new camera!

You'll stay in a Panorama Suite on the Silversea Silvermuse, sailing across the North Pacific to Tokyo, Japan. On this trip of a lifetime, you'll cross the International Date Line, island hop the Aleutians in the Bering Sea and see natural wildlife such as seals and bald eagles. And this showcase which is in your sights, safe and sound, can be yours if The Price is Right!

123, is this your showcase to bid on, or is it 9821's to bid on?

Who uses CD players anymore?

I'd recommend something in the $27K range.

Kind of wondering why you swapped the last two digits. Would have made for an interesting day for you.

Making it a palindrome, perhaps?

Not gonna lie, I didn't think about the possibility of only using my username to win. Would've been epic if I end up winning.  First thought was the palindrome.

Also, TPIRfan, I really think your showcase is in the six digits and I'm not saying that because I'm your opponent.  :-)

His winning bid that got him on stage was $1,231. I figured 123 would complete the screen name but switched the last two digits.  :P

That showcase was more than I thought! The maid service was really the biggest surprise.

On IUFB 3, I was hoping to bid $1601, but I couldn't find any pictures. Same for 1602 and 1603.

Absolutely excellent show! The graphics were great, especially the showcase podiums. Your hosting style is more straightforward than other hosts, but that's okay. It's nice to have a no-nonsense show once in a while.

Is this the first time we had a DQ in a showcase?

Also, for the future- I'm not sure I would have handled it that way. I'd probably have called on the one excluded from the Showcase (in this case Shocky) to step in and play instead. Seems kinda weird playing against the house, that's all.

Noted. I don't expect it to happen again but I'll keep that in mind.

In my defense, from some timestamp, either from the most recent post or the time I was PMed, I thought I had until 6 EST. Not much I could do waking up and realizing I was DQed. I would have messed around and done $32,132 anyways, since I was never putting the maid service above $2,000 and would have garfed the furniture.

Bullseye I for a car was outright sadistic. I appreciate going out of your way to try to make a difficult game have a high payout, but it just made the game more impossible. Saying that the car ended in a 0 pretty much made the setup at best as difficult as the original rules. Even then, since it wasn't a common car, we had a fun 6 out of 7 tries trying to get the thousands digit. I think this is just me personally, but at the very least, I would have given that setup the most expensive IUFB just for having to endure that, so that way, if someone else lost their pricing game, the Bullseye I player would have made it to the Showcases.

Other than that, great host!
I loved the graphics, and I really liked what you brought to the table.

Yeah, in retrospect offering a Caddy in Bullseye was mean-spirited. I had flip-flopped with a range or giving the last digit before settling on the latter. It was a good idea on paper to demonstrate the difficulty, but a normally-priced car would have been more fair.

Most of the graphics were recycled when I did HYO's from 2005. The rest were from later files I've collected by hosting other Net Games.

The problem is, when Bullseye I had no range, the cars were 2 to 3K, so there kind of was a range. The car you set up for me was nearly 60K, And was an upper level model. There’s a reason BigJon sets up Bullseye with a $1,000 range, as that’s essentially the range the contestants from 1972 received. Honestly, you’re very lucky I somehow got it within $50, and I still think that should have been good enough to receive the car with a set-up that obscene.  :P

But besides that blemish and my changed-guess screw-up (which you handled very well), this was a solid show. Maybe one day I’ll host on Net Games Central. ;-)
