Never saw that Aruba trip coming...or that it would be won so easily.

They really, really had some budget to burn on that trip to Aruba, offering it in Cliff Hangers, of all the possible games to offer it in.

Considering the budget for today's show, I was surprised the trip showcase wasn't a lot more expensive than it actually was.

This was one of those shows that just makes you scratch your head but also makes you thankful that we don't see nearly as big a mess as this on a daily basis. Between the usual Rent reverting to its evil self, all the themed sexed up prizes and a $47K TRIP FOR 22 in Cliff, this show reeked of excess in the worst way. I've accused the show of offering expensive trips or prizes that it knows will be declined before to give off the appearance of extravagance, but this has to be the WORST example of that yet. Not only are many people not going to want to pay the taxes on that trip, many people on the show will already have started planning their wedding and won't be able to suddenly change it to Aruba, and on top of that people might not have their wedding in Aruba if they know people can't come. Then to flaunt this $47k prize in a standard easy Cliff setup is just the height of things not making sense. Honestly, from the way Drew built the prize up I thought 3 Strikes was coming 6th. Then it turned out to be one of the worst prizes they've ever offered. Hey, maybe that's next, 3 Strikes for a trip!

The rest of the show wasn't too bad, because at least some winning happened, and the TTM win in particular was exciting (though again, the fact that the TTM winner spun second was beyond dumb. To make things worse, if Money had been won, THAT car winner would have also spun second. That's something you should try to avoid in general, and they did it twice in the same show!) And the themed garbage is annoying but it's something we've all learned to deal with on an annual basis. It was easier to deal with last year though with no Rent, no ridiculous $40k trips, and an asterisked perfect show. Shows like this just make you wonder what they're smoking over there. At least I'm fairly sure we have 9 "regular" episodes now to close out the regular season.

Oh, and Bart Eskander did indeed direct today! That's nice....

Timings:
Switch? (3.5) - 3:39
Pay The Rent (7) - 6:29
Money Game (4.5) - 3:56
Coming Or Going (3.5) - 2:46
That's Too Much (4) - 3:23
Cliff Hangers (4.5) - 6:10
Total (27): 26:23

S?: Easy.

PtW: Whether or not they intended it to play it that way, Erin & Kyle tried.

MG: I knew our luck w/ finding the first two numbers right away would run out sooner or later.

CoG: I would've lost.

TTM: Nicely done!

C-H: And what a perfect second half that was w/ a $47K+ trip here!

Showcases: They should've revealed Hawken & Ari's result first, because I knew they were way over.

Decent episode today. Actually, Ryan still directed this episode.

Aruba Rant

I DJ weddings.  Most weddings occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which makes sense: it's nice out, the venues are open, etc.  Since this episode taped in early May, I would be inclined to believe that a fairly large number of them were getting married shortly after taping or, at least, had planning underway.

This trip sucks.

First off, twenty-two people.  Take out the engaged couple, and that leaves twenty.  Assuming you have a reasonably-sized wedding party (let's assume best man, maid/matron of honor, and two bridesmaids/groomsmen), that knocks the guest list down to fourteen.  But wait, you need your parents to go!  Knock out four more slots, and we're down to ten.  Hope you don't have many friends or additional family members that you want to spend the greatest day of your life with.

When I heard that ARP, I was livid ... and I don't get livid at this show.  A price tag of $47,017 doesn't showcase a great opportunity for contestants.  It shows that "we're offering something crazy because we can".  Even Drew mentioned at the end of the show "hey, we had some crazy prizes today!", as if that was somehow the saving grace from a double overbid.

That being said, time for math.  $47,017 / 22 = $2,137.14 ... for Aruba.  The price tag seems lofty, but in actually it's a really cheap trip ... just for a lot of people.  But who cares about that when there's a huge number to taunt to the viewers!  GAZE INTO OUR LUXURY.

You don't get a choice of the hotel.  You don't get a choice of the venue.  You don't get a choice, presumably, of who even officiates the wedding.  You can just choose to "not" go, especially with that Cliff setup.  You needed to be a little off your rocker to lose that one.

I understand that not every engaged couple wants the same thing, but to flat-out assume that they want the entire wedding planned from the get-go is a bit insulting.  I know some shows offer that (I believe morning talk shows do), but the difference is that the engaged couples want - and sign up - for that particular feature.  These couples (presumably) want a car, money, or to fill out their registry items.

Oh wait, the showcase called this out specifically.  So, yeah, that's what the couples want: not their wedding day planned out by some focus group in a hot room.  That trip was more-than-likely turned down in a heartbeat.  (If for whatever reason that couple sees this - and they accepted - then hey, good for you, but I feel a lot of people wouldn't want that.)

That was the worst segment I have ever seen of this show, and everyone involved should be ashamed of their blatant budget flaunting.  I realize the show gave away houses in the 1950s and whatnot, but you can use a house for longer than one week.  Presumably.

Something's wrong when Switch? is the most expensive segment of a half, even if Money Game was won.  Again, they invest way too much money in these lavish trips.  For a show that claims to want to "offer prizes that have never been seen before", it sure has fallen into the monotony of "expensive trips", "designer accessories", "home theaters", "cars that will only be won when we feel like it", and "electronics".  It's just not interesting.

But that's just one man's opinion.

---

That being said, the show wasn't a complete wash.  We figured Pay the Rent was going to be lost - and the setup was tough - but they played it quite well.  That's Too Much! is always nice to see won, and the lineup - while derivative and par-for-the-course for a Rent lineup - didn't make any baffling decisions.  I thought the showcases were decent, too.

I guess if today's show was an apple, I could bite around the Cliff-sized blemish.

Oh, and Bart Eskander did indeed direct today! That's nice....
Too bad the credit layover on CBS credited Ryan Polito. Oops.

Sigh....so again, we get Switch for $18,475 and a $47,000 trip in Cliff Hangers and still we can't get a three-car show more than once a friggin' year? Come on. This is beyond ridiculous.

Other than the highly head-scratching record breaking Cliff Hangers, this was a fine show. Rent was actually enjoyable for quite a while as they did an okay job ordering the products. And it is always nice to get a Pay The Rent win.

Now I hope we're done with the specials for the rest of June. I feel Thursday isn't going to get here fast enough.

Embarrassing.

They have no qualms about breaking a cardinal rule of the show, and it's just really embarrassing.

Why the hell did they put so much decoration effort on THIS special of all ones? It honestly makes me a bit sick.

Today's Pay the Wedding winning combination:

Mailbox: Peanut butter and jelly = $3.99
1st Floor: Biscuits ($2.59) + Body wash ($2.29) = $4.88
2nd Floor: Drink mix ($3.49) + Margarine ($1.59) = $5.08
Attic: Cleaner = $5.49

The cleaner was in the right place, as were the biscuits.

Forgive me for not knowing something which is probably rather obvious, but what rule would that be?

a $47K TRIP FOR 22 in Cliff [...] has to be the WORST example of that yet. No, that last part does make sense -- showing someone winning such a large prize is the important part, not whether they actually take it. Again, it comes down to the appearance of looking extravagant, when in reality it just looks...well...

Embarrassing.

A luxury prize (30k+) that is not car or cash doesn't belong on the Price is Right. I believe this is the first time we've crossed 40k, and well into it.

Oh my lord, where to begin...

Is it bad when the prize value in SWITCH? is $52 LESS than the CAR offered in Money Game?

Welcome back hard Pay the Rent. We've been expecting you.

...Cliff Hangers... :headbang:

Incidently, I'm honestly getting tired of seeing Cliff Hangers. It feels like it's been played more this season than Plinko has.

Incidently, if Ari and Hawken had won their showcase, which included a JEEP, the total prize package in the showcase was still less than the prize package in their pricing game, which didn't even include a car.

At least the rest of this show was ok.

A $47K+ trip to Aruba...............To quote Alpha: "Ay yi yi yi yi yi!!!" Something like that just doesn't really belong on Cliffy. Even though it was won, I was really flabbergasted over that.

Did Mike really need to put Rent on the lineup today? I know that Erin and Kyle did their best (And that's all we can get from that game, now it's back to being evil), but he could've at least give them a more entertaining cash game than PtR. Plinko, Punch, IITB, 1/2 Off, Grand Game............Any one of them would've been used instead. Well, I guess Erin and Kyle can always elope.  :P

All-in-all, despite another Rent trap, the uber sexed-up trips from Cliffy and Switch?, another unnecessary random appearance of the Beastmaster aka Daniel Goddard (Rob could've been there instead IMHO), and a Double Overbid, it wasn't all that bad. At least, TTM was won respectively.

What's interesting is that even if someone won both Showcases, that's only about $3,000 more than what was won in Cliff Hangers.

I found it pretty funny that we started with all these wedding-themed IUFBs, then a computer pops up (which, of course, isn't bad, considering just about anybody, especially married couples, can use a computer in today's world).

Also, very nice to see That's Too Much won. Unfortunate losses on Rent and Money Game.

What was this rule?  Does it have something to do with offering a prize that a contestant will probably never accept?

Money Game:  Bummer! :-(
Pay The Rent:  Evil setup.

Pretty good overall, IMHO.

What was this rule?  Does it have something to do with offering a prize that a contestant will probably never accept?

A luxury prize (30k+) that is not car or cash doesn't belong on the Price is Right. I believe this is the first time we've crossed 40k, and well into it.

OK, I kinda am stretching the "cardinal rule" part, but it really should be one anyways.

I'm sure they would have preferred a grandfather clock.

Look, your "cardinal rules" are borderline ridiculous, arbitrary and capricious. Also, it sure as heck looks like this trip was sponsored and/or provided by the Aruba tourism bureau...

The third 2-player show inside of three weeks. Once a month is plenty, if at all. Oh, look, it's Daniel Goddard... again. Is it safe to call him a semi-regular model now?

Switch? - A win's always nice to start the show.

Pay the Rent Wedding - What bothers me more than this game's overpowering difficulty is how often it shows up. I'd have to guess that this is the current producers' pride and joy of a game and they trot it out just as often as they can. Meanwhile, Golden Road and Triple Play, actual good games, show up maybe three times a season.

Money Game - Missed having the 41 at the top of the board... and Not-So-El-Cheapo steals the win away. I figured that 27 would be the last two numbers as soon as I saw the board.

Showdown #1 - The possible dream...

Coming or Going - Made the right choice.

Fifth Item Prize up for Bids - Did it strike anyone else as slightly hilarious/ridiculous that every item up for bids on this show up to this point had been wedding-associated? Tuxedos/gowns, rings, flowers, cake... then suddenly A NEW COMPUTER. What happened? They run out of wedding related prizes?

That's Too Much - Always nice to see someone outsmart this game.

Cliff Hangers - ...the hell was up with that trip to Aruba? $40,000+?! And on a gimmie set-up game life Cliff Hangers? Wha...?

Showcases - Another double-player show ends with the double overbid of doom. And more free prizes for the audience, just like last Friday's Father's Day show. Who booked this stuff?

Didn't care for this show.

I'm in agreement. More Golden Road!

I know these are relative terms, but why make it so "difficult" to win a sub-$20K prize on some episodes and so "easy" to win one valued at more than $47K on others? What about on the same episode?? To me, this lack of consistency makes big wins less special and might perturb some viewers. I would have at least saved the Aruba wedding trip for a showcase.

That's not even the biggest problem. I like crazy prizes. I liked the wine vault (minimally), and the Man-Wall was fun. Hell, they gave away a Monopoly set in 1977 that would be worth around $20K today. That's insane. And they gave away that Monopoly set in One Right Price!

I have a problem saving prizes like these for only special shows, making them few and far between (so not really mixing it up), and not taking the opportunity to make the show really fun by offering a 3rd car on the show. I refuse to call the show's prize selection "lazy" as others do, because they still have to arrange for a prize to appear on the show like they would any other prize and it isn't any easier than other prizes.

What I will call it is uninspired (at times).

Well, at least Rent was played more or less how it was supposed to, so at least it had some excitement to it.

I wonder how much taxes on a $47K trip to Aruba costs compared to the costs of an actual wedding...

That said, perhaps what saddens me most about this is...

Last year's Wedding Shower show was perfect. PERFECT. Not just in how every game was won (I consider $10K in Plinko a win and no one's going to stop me!), but in how the whole thing played out more or less like a normal show, and the feel of the show was like a normal show that was going really well. The only real gimmicks were an $8K trip to Miami offered to all stage players and a pair of bachelor/ette parties similar to today's (only in Bargain Game, and at least that time, it was less than the ARP of the car in the first half). The lineup overall was much better, with Plinko and Pocket Change instead of Pay the Rent and That's Too Much (though at least TTM got won).

It felt like a special, but it didn't feel extravagant, and the games carried the show more than the prizes did.

Unfortunately, the Powers That Be apparently don't feel like they want that kind of show again. They'd rather just go for extravagant prizes to appeal to what I guess the current primary audience for this show wants. And I guess I'm not part of that primary audience anymore.

Well, whatever. I have last year's wedding shower show saved on my DVR for all eternity. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and rewatch that now.

So...um...was I watching the same show as everyone else?  This honestly felt to me like a normal episode with bigger-than-usual prizes.  Hell, if Drew hosted as well every day as he did today, they could probably get away with doing damn near whatever they wanted and still have it feel like it made sense.

As a matter of fact, it feels like Drew probably hosted even better today than what we were able to see -- the show was obviously edited to shreds, and that included some really choppy edits in the middle of him talking that made him sound ridiculously awkward when he probably wasn't.

The only thing that truly bothered me about today's show was the use of the name "Pay the Wedding" -- not because of anything about the game itself, but because that combination of words doesn't mean anything.

Finally, a voice of reason!

I thought that was a fun show. Unfortunately I couldn't get through the first page of posts without wanting to put sharp objects in my eyeballs.

What is with the outrage over the wedding trip? First of all, they offered it in a fee game - probably the easiest one on the show at that, so they weren't worried about giving it away. Secondly, it was so blatantly sponsored, there's no way the show spent near $47K on it. The prize budget will live to see another show.

Like I said, I'm not even concerned with the prize budget. My reasons for not liking it are actually kind of selfish. If they can have so much fun and offer a prize this big in a fee game, why can't there be more three car shows on a rotation more than once a year? Cars can be sponsored too. I feel loosening the reigns on this stranglehold against three car shows will open up the door for many more fun and unpredictable shows.

This has nothing to do with the budget, nothing to do with their spending money, and they were most certainly not worried about it getting won. This has to do with flaunting a BIG PRIZE such as they have done for years now, more specifically a BIG PRIZE that is not likely to be taken due to the high taxes or because the couple has already planned their wedding out.

Today's Cliff Hangers was a perfect example of why I think the contestants running over to EVERY prize that is won is extremely annoying. Drew and Gwen were pretty much forcing them over there.

If it's a car, I can understand. Some other tangible prize... maybe. But a trip? No. There's no point to it.

Huh. Guess I just don't see what the big deal is.
It seems as if a majority of people here do not like the fact the current regime likes offering expensive trips; they believe the show does this, banking on the fact that the contestant won't accept it and pay the taxes. If the contestant doesn't take it, the show saves that $47k, and in a lot of peoples eyes here, "jips" the contestant out of taking home something affordable.  It's not like the contestant can sell the trip: they have to take it or forfeit it.

^ I hate this. Use proper quotes.

It's a big prize, it probably didn't cost the show anything since it seemed to be sponsored, and it wasn't overemphasized throughout the show. People like big prizes. Audiences like big prizes. They may or may not accept it - that's really none of your concern.

Another thing, somebody could easily win a big money game (i.e. Gas Money, Pay The Rent, Plinko) and the same scenario that you're so damn worried about could still happen.

Uhhhh.... is there a blank stare smiley?

Huh. Guess I just don't see what the big deal is.

It really isn't a big deal, it's just that some folks will never get the current (Emmy award winning) producers credit where credit is due and will find fault in anything & everything.

I always give credit where credit is due (or at least, I hope I do) -- Drew hosted very well on this episode, they decorated things a bit more than usual, and a decent amount was won (not counting the Aruba trip).

And for the record, I do not judge shows based solely on win-loss records.

I don't really mind that the staff did what they did; they're clearly doing it to appeal to what they consider is the "main audience" for the show, and I can live with that. I'm just lamenting how much better last year's show was.

(And for what it's worth, I can't really tell when Drew's hosting "well" and when he's not, at least not as good as some people here can, so I can't judge a show based on that too much.)
