Wow - I didn't think anyone (or hardly any) was expecting Nashville to go up 2-0 in their series against Chicago and Toronto to tie their series against Washington at 1-1 this early... this may be much tighter than we initally thought... not to jinx it yet for now

GAME 3: Tyler Bozak with the game winner in overtime!  Leafs beat the Caps 4-3 to take a 2-1 series lead!

The Calgary Flames really gave it all they got, but unfortunately their season is done as the Anaheim Ducks are the first team to move on to round 2 by sweeping them 4-0.

Maple Leafs drop a 5-4 decision to the Washington Capitals in game 4 to tie that series at 2-2. Once again, the Leafs get behind early, but unlike last time, they weren't quite able to get the "W".

Chicago Blackhawks, 1st seed in the West, are swept by the Predators. Who knew!

Wow, I don't think anyone was expecting that. Nashville is the first #8 team to sweep a #1 seed in the playoffs. I feel bad for the people who picked the Blackhawks to win it... (there's a lot of bracket busting now)

Meanwhile, Columbus is out in 5 games against Pittsburgh.

Nashville is the first #8 team to sweep a #1 seed in the playoffs.

It's never happened in the NBA, either!

I'm about 50 miles outside of Nashville and could just about hear the cheering inside Bridgestone Arena from here. I can only imagine how electric the atmosphere was in person.

I'm not a huge hockey fan, but this playoff run might just change that. I absolutely need to get to a game in the next round.

Wow, what a big win for the Edmonton Oilers - down 3-1 at one point and coming back to win it 4-3 in OT to take a 3-2 series lead against San Jose Sharks :)

Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: mellongraig on April 23, 2017, 10:14:20 PM
Sadly, the predictions came true as Washington closes it out in OT with a 2-1 victory over Toronto to win it in 6 games. At least Toronto gave it all they got to make it interesting (and especially a young team as well) by facing 5 OT games in the series (and 18 OT games in all in round 1 for all teams which is an NHL record).

Anyway, eight teams remain, here they are:

East:
Washington vs. Pittsburgh
Ottawa vs. NY Rangers

West:
Anaheim vs. Edmonton
St. Louis vs. Nashville

Schedule should be out soon - in the meantime, place your predictions here on which teams will win round 2.

Ottawa won last night against NY Rangers 2-1 and take a 1-0 series lead, but boy, attendance was disappointing with only 16,744 fans on hand. Really no excuse for them to not sell out their arena in the 2nd round...
Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Ottawa beats New York 6-5 in double overtime to take a 2-0 series lead.  With the win by Edmonton last night, the remaining Canadian teams are on a roll!
Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: mellongraig on April 29, 2017, 09:02:56 PM
Much better attendance wise on that game - 18,679 turned out making it a sellout crowd.

In other news, New Jersey is picking 1st for the 2017 NHL Draft - unfortunately for Vancouver they went down to 5th in the draft lottery.

Let's hope the Stanley Cup drought comes to an end in Canada - 24 years and still counting so far.

Questionable calls have lost the series lead for the Oilers and now the series is tied at 2-2 after a 4-3 OT win by Anaheim. I do give credit to the Oilers fans for being supportive in games 3 and 4 for being loud.

Meanwhile, Washington and St. Louis are on the brink as they are down 3-1 in their respective series, and Ottawa has their series lead cut to 2-1.

Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Ouch - this reminds me of the Maple Leafs @ Bruins game 7 in 2013 where the Leafs lost a 3 goal lead and choked in the 3rd period that cost them the season. Well guess what, it happened to the Oilers tonight in game 5, only this stinged more in the final three minutes or so.  :boo::oww::cry:

If this happens to be the turnaround in the series and the Oilers don't win game 6 on Sunday, there will be a lot of questions surrounding the team on what went wrong.
Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: UltraPrice on May 06, 2017, 07:15:18 AM
The Ducks become the first team in NHL playoff history to come back from a 3 goal deficit with less than 4 minutes remaining and force overtime.  What an epic collapse by the Oilers.
Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: mellongraig on May 06, 2017, 09:13:32 AM
Just imagine had that been a game 7 instead of a game 5... this would have been talked about for many years to come. It still has, but boy that was just awful based on bad calls by the referees in this series.

I certainly hope this will not be a repeat of what happened in Game 5 when they choked in the final 3:16... and history has shown that the Ducks have been unable to close it out in Game 7 at home since 2013.

:) Now if the Oilers can win game 7 tomorrow night and not collapse like game 5, it'd be the first time since 1994 that both Canadian teams would be in the conference final, and the first time since 1993 that they would reach their respective conference finals separately (at the time Prince of Wales/Clarence Campbell).
Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs

It will be Penguins Vs. Senators in the East.
Title: Re: 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs

That game 5 will be haunted forever by the Oilers that cost them the series in game 7, losing 2-1 in the process and 4-3 in the series - if only they didn't choke in the final 3:16... would have been a different story altogether.

Anyway, down to the final four:

East:
Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa

West:
Anaheim vs. Nashville

Prediction time on who goes to the final.

They should have been out in the second round, but that didn't happen. Oh well, the 8th seed moves on, and now here's hope that Ottawa wins game 6. Otherwise, the Canadian Stanley Cup drought will continue for another year bringing it up to 24.

Holy crap!

Speaking as someone who's lived in the Nashville area his entire life, I can tell you the Preds, while growing in popularity, have never been at the top of the sports food chain here.  Even I'm not that much of a hockey fan, nor have I really kept up with their season this year.  This playoff run has completely changed a lot of people's perspectives of both the Predators and the sport itself.  I don't know if the Preds will pull it off or end up like the Titans did in Super Bowl XXXIV coming one yard short of winning, but there is a buzz of excitement right now in these parts that hasn't been felt in quite a long time, and it's a good feeling.

Go Preds!

Well, they technically still have it.  In reality they don't but are still the champs.  Either way it should be a great series, over in 6 or 7.  IMO, no sweep especially if Pittsburgh only manages a dozen SOG.  Nashville is not losing 3 more games that way (unless they're worse). Likewise, Pittsburgh probably improves; Nashville was spotted 3 days over a team that came off of their second consecutive 7-game series, both full of emotion (and injuries)

I'm hoping Nashville can win the cup.  Unlike some of the Southern cities that have/had NHL franchises, Tennessee has been behind their Predators since they came into the league with the Blue Jackets in 2000.  The electric atmosphere of Bridgestone Arena during this year's playoffs and the fact that they broke the indoor noise record, which is amazing for an 18,000 seat venue compared to the noise record set by a crowd more than 5 times that when 93,173 fans roared as Hulk Hogan bodyslammed Andre the Giant in the Pontiac Silverdome at WrestleMania three decades ago.  I'm predicting Predators in 7

People are saying Crosby and the Penguins gets tons of favortism.

Because they do. Especially Cindy Crybaby.

This guy has gone from being virtually unknown in the Nashville area to public enemy number one after the Subban incident.

Worth noting that he won the Conn Smythe Trophy even after he did this to P.K. Subban:

Great example you're setting, NHL.

I drove through Nashville last month, and I have to ask: Are the Preds fans really fans of the sport, or just the atmosphere of the crowd and an event? I have heard both from national media, and while I have a cousin in that general area, he grew up a Red Wings fan due to living near Detroit for years. Also considering the team was close to moving, makes me wonder.

Any observations from some Nashville area residents?

I don't live there, but I went to a Predators game five years ago, and the atmosphere was as enthusiastic as I've ever seen in an NHL arena (I've been to nine of them).

Nashville is one of the best success stories of an NHL market in the south.  Like many other southern states, Tennessee has a high population of hockey fans and people who moved south from places that may have lacked an NHL Franchise.  Having the Predators is a dream come true for a Nashville resident who may have relocated from say, Wisconsin and finally has a home team after having spent their years growing up rooting for a Northstars or Wild team that played their games more than an hour's drive from and in a different state than their hometown.  What many hockey fans also forget is that for much of the league's history, hockey was a sport exclusive to Canada and a handful of cities in the northeastern US.  Only in the 1970s with expansion teams like the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, Edmonton Oilers, Oakland Seals, Kansas City Scouts, and Atlanta Flames did the NHL truly become national as its footprint swelled exponentially.  The league is much more exciting with 31 teams than it would be if it were still the original six.  I'm all for the NHL having franchises in non-traditional markets so long as the city and population genuinely supports the team.

I've lived in the Nashville market my entire life but about 40-50 miles outside of the city.  Here's what I've observed:

- The biggest fans, it seems, are in fact those who have moved to Nashville from other cities.  This comes as no surprise, as the city has been exploding with growth recently, which includes, as mentioned above, many people from northern regions where hockey is much more popular.

- There are, however, many fans who aren't what we refer to as "transplants" from other regions of the country.  They just don't come close to matching the number of Titans or Vols fans (or fans of both teams, as I am).

- Once you step outside of Nashville's city limits, football is absolutely king.  We follow the Preds, and several people I know do in fact have season tickets.  However, the Average Joe probably can't tell you what the Preds record is during the regular season or when the next game is going to be played -- at least not until playoff time.  We'll see how this changes following the Stanley Cup run.  They may have picked up several more true 'fans', myself included.

- The biggest sports radio station, WGFX-FM 1045 The Zone, spends very little time discussing the Preds -- the exception being during their playoff run.  Granted, they aren't the flagship station for the Preds -- that would be 102.5 FM -- but they, by far, have the largest listening audience of any station in Nashville, regardless of format.  The Tennessee Titans, Tennessee Vols and Vanderbilt Commodores generally get the most attention on any given day.

- Regarding football, even the Titans aren't as popular as the Vols, despite being much closer in proximity (Knoxville is about 150 or so miles east of Nashville)(Vandy's fan base, even in Nashville where the school is located, is smaller than that of the Vols).  College football comes first, followed by the NFL.  After that, it's kind of a toss up, but the Preds have certainly made their case to fill that space.

This was the first Stanley Cup Finals series since 1983 where no game was decided by one goal.

650,000 fans attended the Penguins victory parade today.

I would say that the help of country superstars in Nashville performing the national anthem at the Predators playoff home games got them this far to the finals.
