Title: It's That Time...
Post by: Marc on January 03, 2008, 05:02:36 PM
I’ve never been a fan of airing dirty laundry in public…but the time has come.

I take a very hands off approach to this site…always have.  I step in when I need to, add my comments when appropriate, and get rid of wrongdoers as needed.  I also pay the bills…no big deal.  It’s you guys, as members, who are the stars of the show around here.  I’m content in knowing that this site has become what it has literally from “the ground up” – from one guy’s personal webspace on AOL and other guy’s small TPiR message board on Bravenet.  But its you all that drive the content of this site…I’m generally happy to sit back and read / learn with all of you and with enjoyment.

There have also been a number of you that have helped me along the way.  From Gene Platt, who successfully merged the two sites described above…to Joe Capitano, who reliably and accurately records in writing each day’s events…to John Sly, who started with me during a drive to Best Buy and who continues to be one of my best friends today…to all the moderators who have kept the site in tip-top shape…to Robert Searcy, who took the backbone of this site from a failing platform to the stable site software that we are using today.  To all of you that have played a role, and you know who you are, I thank you.

But with all that good comes some of the BS that I simply will not handle anymore.  People like John Chartier and “TunaHead” that threaten me because I will not give them more than what I am already giving them.  People like Tom Boggs, who for some reason decided work eBay into canceling a recent charity auction we were running for UAAR while I was working on obtaining a letter from the charity.  And now, people like former site admin Robert Searcy, who decided to write this earlier today:

http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=14446 (registration required)

Long story short, and somebody please correct me if I’m wrong, some in our daily chat room were complaining that member / moderator FPGWillyT was abusing his administrative powers.  Fair enough, I asked Searcy (who had every administrative password to this site) to pull me some transcripts of this abuse & “trash talking”.  He does, via about 12 screenshots…and I see no wrongdoing from Tynan…with the possible exception of his use of the word “assbag”, something that I am not going to terminate a membership & friendship over.  So, I let the issue die and told Willy to behave as anyone else…no harm, no foul.

Fast forward a couple of days, to November 18th.  Some friends and I are tailgating outside after the Cowboys – Redskins game (so I’m 5 hours away from home) when John calls me and tells me that Searcy went off the deep end.  Apparently, Searcy had enough of this “abuse” from Tynan, so he decided to email a large number of members to tell them to boycott the chat, boycott the site, and all sorts of other crap that I can’t recall right now.  Stupid designer accessories.  I’m sure one of you has a copy of the email if you wish to post it for all to read.  So what do I do?  I get back to Tulsa, change all my passwords to the site, and removed all of Searcy’s administrative access…I SIMPLY COULD NOT TRUST HIM ANYMORE…a reasonable response to what Robert did as far as I’m concerned.  I later got a hold of Robert via AIM, politely explained to him why I did what I did, and ended the conversation.  I told him that he did an awesome job for the site and for all of us (I did so publicly on the Forums, too), but I could not allow him to hold my passwords if I was unable to trust him.

Now today while I’m eating lunch, somebody calls to my attention the thread at the above link.  The thread where I participated in the “the lowest, dirtiest thing anyone's ever done to” him.  The thread where he tells me I’ll be sorry.  Screw that.  I didn’t do anything to anybody.  The only thing that I did was to try to protect the integrity of this site…something that I’ve tried to do since day one.  In fact, it was Robert that apologized to a whole bunch of us for his “evil deed”, and it was Robert who publicly resigned from the site before I even had a chance to talk to him (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php?topic=4713.msg67072#msg67072).  I was not “low”, I was not “dirty”, but I was “appropriate”.

I’m sorry to go on and on and on.  All I have left to say is that I’ve always tried to do the right thing – be it for this site or for the good people at TPiR, some of whom have become good friends with.  There’s a ton of “great” that comes along with running a website, and a little bit of “terrible” that comes along just the same.  But as little and rare as that “terrible” is, I just have too much going on in my life to devote energy to dealing with it anymore.

Effective immediately, I am turning over full control of the site to John and stepping down as administrator.  I will be giving him all of my passwords just as soon as I have a chance to type them up.  I’ll continue to pay for hosting for as long as he needs me to, and the domain name is paid for through the end of 2008.  I don’t want to see this site go anywhere anytime soon.

My love for TPiR will always be there, my love for this site will always be there…and I thank each and every one of you for nearly ten years of great fun and memories.

Marc

Marc, it's sad to see you go, but I respect your decision.  I want to thank you for creating this great site and allowing fans from all over the Internet to come in here and have a good time with each other.  May God bless you and I wish you the best of luck for your future.

Sincerely,

its sad to see you go, but i respect your decision. (ironically, i had went back and re-read Robert's resignation thread a few hours ago.) you did lots for this site, including the chat with Drew Carey a few months ago. the site wont be the same without you.

I don't know what's going on and I really don't want to know.  All in all, I thank you, Marc for doing all the wonderful things you and others have been doing for the site during the 3+ years I've been here and I wish you all the best of luck during future endeavors.

I don't know where to start on this one.  I do have to make some concessions on my part.

I've done things that brought Marc to the brink of insanity here and there, simply because I take a very different method of posting on here.  I'm very open-minded, and I tend to take a "hands on" approach.  I've dished out my share of "trash talk", but I know that I don't back it up 90% of the time--take a look at my CSS stats and you'll know what I mean!  However, I share a love for "The Price is Right" too, and that is something that will never fade away from me.  I'm not an expert on the intricacies of TPIR; I'm just a hardcore fan of TPIR like everyone else in here.

Marc, if you get this message right now, on behalf of my fellow Islanders at TAMU-CC, I'd like to wish you all the best in whatever lies ahead.  You are still welcome at my on-campus apartment if and when you do visit Corpus Christi, and I'd be happy to show you the finer points of the coast.  Take it easy Marc, and God bless!

Regards,

John "GoldenBulldog" Gillmen

I'm not sure whether this counts as a violation of the "not adding anything new to the discussion" rule, but I'd like to add my name to the list of people thanking you for all your hard work running this site. I sincerely hope your CSS "artistry" will continue.

I've seen this happen on another mboard, I wouldn't give it up because this happened.  I also run a mboard, although a smaller one and seen this happen on my board too.  I let my cousin take over for a bit and "sat" in the back seat.  A little later, I returned to my mboard.

Stuff like this happens on mboards and chat rooms many times.  Sometimes the admin will xfer control to someone else or just shrug it off and go on. Although you're turning control to John, maybe just sit in the back seat for awhile and collect your thoughts.  You put a LOT of effort into this board and we all appreciate what you done. :)

What...what the hell?!

This is not right.  This is just not right.  I can't believe Searcy would do this.

...then again, I couldn't believe Searcy sent that e-mail, either, but...gah.  Just...wow.

Marc, we're going to miss you around here.  I can't say for certain that I wouldn't have made the same decision in your position, but it still just sucks.  You've done more for the TPIR fan community than most people could even imagine.  Hell, all the projects I've worked on here, which have really become my figurative "babies" over the years, never would have gotten started if you hadn't asked me to create a FAQ for the site way back when.  I can't thank you enough for the opportunities you've given me here.

I...blah.  I just don't know.  This stinks.

It appears to have been deleted. Searching for all of Robert's posts doesn't bring it up, and David Zinkin has posted about it in the "Behind the Scenes" forum.

Yes, it's been removed.  It should have been deleted earlier, but I was on the road for much of today and did not see the post until tonight.

I have tried, more than once, to get across the point that we at the Game Show Forum are not at war with Golden-Road.net.  This forum focuses on Price while we have a broader scope, and there's plenty of room for both boards.  And now comes a former admin who decides not only to stir that fecal matter up again, but to hurl a bunch of baseless accusations — relating to behavior on his part that he admits was "inexcusable"!

No.  No.  A thousand times, no.

I apologize to Marc and the G-R staff for allowing, however inadvertently, our board to be used to attack them.  And as I said on the GSF moments ago, I also apologize to those of you who have enough common sense not to need this refresher course.

There would never have been a Golden-Road.net without you, Marc.  You've been the face of it since the beginning.  I first learned about this site when I saw you on the E! "True Hollywood Story" of TPIR many years ago.  I really hate to see you resign your administratorship, but I understand your decision.  Though personally, I also hate to take a side in this whole matter, as Searcy has been a friend of mine for a long time.

God bless you, Marc, for all that you've done to make this site what it is, and make me feel welcome for the last several years.  May you have continued success in all of your future endeavours.

I saw the post over at the GSF and almost instantly thought "this ain't gonna come out pretty".  It's a real darn shame that you have to go, Marc.

I'll raise "this stinks" to "this sucks".

I don't know what that other post said, but I don't think I want to know.
Marc, I wish you the best in the future.  The limited time that I have been a member, you have always been nice to everybody that you have been in contact with.
I truely don't understand why you need to resign as an adminstrator, but I respect your final decision.
I am deeply saddened and shocked.  G-R.net will not be the same without you, CSSArtist.

I just want to voice my public 2 cents ( I will be sending you a priv 2 cents as well Marc) to say not only will we miss you, not only is all of this unfortunate , not only do you do an amazing and fair job here .. making critical issue decisions  that are for the good of all whether we may agree with them 100% or not  and all your hard work will not be forgotten.

I also want to say  something about the sad big pic.. since I have been involved in game show internet stuff since pretty much it's big bang ( 1994-5 ish ) I was around to watch ATGS devolve into the cesspool it became because of a handful of people.  I also  watched a phenomenal other daytime TV site's manager do as you are doing, understandable but sad , see his site abused in other forums so much that he too threw his hands up and said he wasn't dealing with it anymore.   So while on one hand  I feel bad for you and others in your analogous position saying " No.. you can't quit .. you let " THEM" when when you do !!!"  -- on the other hand  these sites are labors of love and fandom-- they aren't your  JOB-- you don't get PAID to be here-- so why the hell would you put up with crap upon crap upon crap   forever before you lost your patience?   I know I couldn't run a site of this magnitude that's for sure and deal with all the flack that comes with running something that lots of people voice their negative opinions about.

( let's face it.. Jesus Christ could come back in the flesh, run a site.. and STILL he would get crap.  " Look, I am the messiah"   " I don't care you shouldn't have let Godlover171 from Omaha post that !! I hate you !!"

So sorry for my ramble.. but I wanted to voice my thanks, regret and undertsanding to you Mr. Marc.. I still hope we get to have coffee or lunch  one of my times I go through OKC. -- Ludwig/Kel  :)

Wow !!??  Did I just read that?

As someone who used to post quite a bit (I still read almost daily), I'm saddened by this news.  However, I certainly can understand.

Marc, while you hand over the reigns, I certainly hope that you stay involved with the other things that you do for this site.  Things like, your frequent trips (with pictures), the live Chat with Drew, the Q&A with "The Dob", and many other things that are too numerous to mention.

Thanks for that unforgettable game of "punch-a bunch" in the live chat (a few years back)

Marc, I don't know what more I can say that hasn't been said already.  I will truly miss having you as an administrator on this site.  You have made this site what it is today along with john and all of the members.  I am truly honored to be a part of this site since mid season 32.  Good luck in the future and hopefully you will continue to visit this site on a regular basis.  John, good luck on being the main person now.

Marc, I just want to say thank you for all you've done for this site.  When I joined late in 2004, you and the other members welcomed me with open arms because I shared a love of TPIR like you.  I guess you can say I wouldn't have grown such an appreciation of the show and especially Rich without this site.  All the friends I've made, all the things I've learned, I couldn't have done it without you

If ever you're in the Toronto area, look me up.  I'll show you around sometime.  In the meantime, thank you for everything

I am very surprised to read this... this is so unlike Searce. And THIS is a really cool game show MB.
Always continue to be. You guys are always on the up-and-up when it comes to PiR.

And when it came to my artwork for T.O.O.N. ME, you welcomed it with open arms!
I really appreciated that a lot!

But there is still love in here, that Sly will now take over the Big Show (not the WWE one) and really rock it the way it should be.
I will miss you, Marc... take care and thanks SO MUCH for everything.

Marc,
I don't participate much on this site, but I've been a member for quite a long time.  I usually only post when I feel I have something important or relevant to say.  Now is one of those times.

I do not know what happened with Robert and/or anyone else, and I don't care.  What I do know is this - YOU are the heart and soul of this site.  Without you, this site would be only a fraction of what it is now.  You are driven by a passion that few others have about the show and this site.  I know that John and Joe, along with the other moderators, will continue your good work here, but we all know that it won't be the same.  No offense is intended to anyone else, but without you, it just won't seem right.

So I am asking you to reconsider.  Please don't let the malicious words of ONE former member dictate your actions.  Don't let him win by getting to you like this.  Ignore him and move forward with the rest of us.  There is so much to be seen in this new uncharted territory that Price is sailing into.  I want you to be part of it.  So PLEASE - think it over...

Sincerely,
Bud

Marc,
Add me to the list of people who don't want to see you go.  You recently showed me great kindness by letting me bend your ear about my current work situation.  It's a kindness that I cannot allow myself to forget.  We never really got the chance to "chat" together as often as I would have liked.  I'm going to miss your good humor and gentle leadership.  Again, I wish you would stay, and I mean that sincerely, but if you must go, then God be with you in all you do.  And feel free to e-mail me anytime you want to hear from a member of the communbity.  My e-mail is still in my profile.

Darn.

That was my initial reaction.  I wanted to post a little more than that, though, so I let it sink in a little, and I'm ready to reply more fully.

I'm sorry to see you go.  You've been, well, this whole site's reason for existance in the first place.  If you weren't here, we'd all still be stuck on MSN.  Or maybe an even worse board.  Who knows.  You've turned this site from a fun little backstage photo site to the whole community it is today.  And I'm sad to read your message.

But certainly, you know what's best for yourself.  If you feel it is in your best interests to step down, I will not argue, or ask that you stay.  You may be up to returning one day.  You may not.  I don't know.  If you come back, that'd be great.  If not, we've still got the very capable John here to help the site run smoothly.

So good luck getting the issues here and other off-site issues worked out, regardless of whether you ever return.

Marc,

We are all very sad if you do leave.  You and John ARE, and will always be such an important element of the Golden Road.Net family.  The love if Price, the interviews, the videos, the show visits, the behind the scenes access and archives, you guys have made all of that possible.  Don't let the bad experiences of a former moderator overshadow so much time, effort, and greatness that you have put into the site.  You have worked too long and accomplished so much to have to leave a 10 year fun and family oriented site like this.  You have thousands and friends right here on the forums who will stick by you!  I personally hope that you will reconsider your decision to leave.

Regardless of what you decide to do, I wish you the very best of success, and thank you for the years past, and hope you are well in years to come.  Thank you for everything!!!!

Joe

As someone who has close ties to Mr. Dobkowitz myself, I can attest to the fact that your work here is appreciated. However there are two sides to every story. I'm not one to get involved in drama, but please keep in mind that unless you are ready to offer opposing parties the right to defend themselves, it is probably unfair to name people here Marc. You are lowering yourself by doing so.

This is a valuable commodity to fans of the show. It is in the best interest of the program that you stay on track with the original concept of this board without turning it into a mud slinging contest which benefits nobody. You've worked hard in creating this forum and The Price Is Right appreciates your efforts. Please don't leave on such a sour note. If you choose to leave, do it in style like Mr. Barker has done. You will be a better person for it.

Dear Marc,

I am sorry to hear and read about all of the issues at hand. I know you and I had a disagreement almost 3 years ago, but, you were adult and man enough and thankfully allowed me to come back.

I ofcourse stay out of all politics regarding any conflicts amongst members and I ignore 100 percent of any negativity ever directed at myself for comments, suggestions or ideas as I have been addressed in a very derogatory tone by members I will not name.

Seems to me, however, (only honest feeling I mention) is that some members do tend come across snippety and ugly. Perhaps if some would not be so judgemental and horrible (example: someone mentioned something that was in a thread and they missed it and asked the same question, they were talked to like dogs. I felt it was uncalled for, yet, I stay out of it). Maybe because there is such a widespread of ages between all members that comments are misunderstood, I don't know?

This is a fun and exciting site, you have busted your tail to make it special for all of us and I for one sincerely thank you and truly appreciate your efforts.

Thanks for reading my comment and I hope this does not come across in a negative way as it is not meant to be.

Wow, just......wow. Dare I say this is a big event in the online Price fandom?

I know I haven't been around long... and I know I've clashed with other people here with my views of things like the Drew Carey era... but dang, when it's all said and done, we're like a nice big dysfunctional family here.

All I can say is that---for whatever it's worth---I'm sorry this all happened, and Marc, if you ever need anything, I'd be more than happy to try and help.... from one Loyal Friend and True to another.

Marc, I am really sorry about your decision to leave. You really did a good job of keeping the site up for all these years. And you really handled most of the nonsense really well. I've been on other message boards that are full of teenage drama queens, and a good portion of the time, they don't even stay on topic. And I even know of a message board where there was this long-time moderator who had been there since day one. She was a very sweet girl, And, like you, Marc, she really did a lot for the boards. You would think she was an Administrator, because she acted like one. She even used to have her own photography website and everything. But after awhile, she finally decided that she had to leave because a lot of people were acting creepy and immature, and she was basically getting too old for it, and decided she had to focus on other things. A lot of people miss her, but they understand that it's her decision, and she has the right to leave if she wants to. And I am going to say the same for you, Marc. I wish you the best of luck on what you plan to do in your future.

Sincerely,
SSetta

I missed the original post so to me, today, this is news...BIG news.  Marc, I've been with you since the very beginning and I sincerely hate to see you go.  It's been a fantastic run and thanks for bringing us everything that you have!

Well this is unbelievable.

You know what... I am so appalled.  I can't believe that a few losers will cause this much turmoil.  I'm sorry for responding late, but Marc, I appreciate all you've done for this site and I am sorry to see you go.

There's not much else left to say on that front.

Now that G-R.net has jumped the shark, I can offer a couple of suggestions.

1. The Chat Room is going to have to come to an end.  Controversial statement?  Yes.  However, the CSS has already led to a termination of two great site administrators.  How can any such thing be worth it?  It's mostly unfair for me to say this because, as a West Coast viewer, the CSS action is usually missed by me anyhow.  Furthermore, I gave up chat rooms years ago, precisely because of shenanigans such as those described in this thread.

2. I have to agree that the Game Show Forum / GR.net war is a bit over the top.  Please do your part to have more respect for every person on any forum.  This is the internet... whatever anyone writes on any forum will eventually be found by someone if they search for it.

3. I know Marc leaving is a huge loss, but GR.net will always be there.  I'd hope that all of us can consider the human element when dealing with any administrator, and any user.  Remember, no matter who you speak to in chat or on these boards, remember, these are human beings with feelings.   Regardless, as long as there is the support of we, the fans, on GR.net, the Golden Road will always lead to greatness.

That's all I have for now.  Take care everyone.

I have never posted a lot, but I read the topics nearly daily.  I have done so for years.  I hope that you are feeling the prayers & friendship of all those on here that are going to miss you.  Marc, this is truly sad & I am shocked about this news.  You & John's insight makes this site standout.  Its more than just a bunch of people who like a show, you really know the people & the show-behind the secnes.  With you gone it will have to lose some of that.  I will miss you....

Wow...this struck me by surprise too. I only found this thread out after seeing the post (what I thought was a joke) concerning Marc in the DVD topic. I am shocked and saddened.

Marc, you are a terrific guy and everything you have done for this site, TPiR in general, and pretty much everything else you have handled behind the scenes is outstanding and I will truly miss you. This site is a loyal friend and true's best friend..and it was all started by a legendary LFAT. Like Frank said, I'm not going to beg for you to come back. You are your own man and your decisions--even the way you explained them--speaks volume to your character. A lot of people would run away from similar issues and disappear that way. Not Marc. That is something else, not just the TPiR knowledge, we should all take away from this man. Good luck with your future endeavors Marc!

May I squeeze in and say you are a great man Marc, even though we never talked to each other. I respect you as a TPiR fan and also the admin of the greatest TPiR site ever. You are the Bob Barker of Price Internet fandom!

Like others, I only browse the board and don't post that often, but it's always sad to see a useful member go, especially one of the founders :(.

It's the strangest thing....being online.  People's feelings get hurt just as much, sometimes more, as they would in real life.  I  obviously don't know the whole story... but unless you knew this guy in person, don't take it so seriously.  If you know that you did everything right and 'by the book', why let someone else's weird moment get you down?   There are enough real life stress moments to worry about rather than internet ones.

Anyway, hope you come back in the near future.  Sometimes a break is all that is needed to erase the bad times..

In another thread titled "Me", Marc said he rejoined this website.  That thread was started earlier today.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!

Marc, do not leave becuase of some a**hole and his comments or actions, It is a show people!!! Granted a show we all love to watch and now talk about all the time. I am not going to say I am going to miss you cause I don't want to miss you.

Do not leave, because of someone else and their stupid inane insecurities. BS man, sticks and stones!!! You started this site and have maintained this site, and brought an ENORMOUS amount of fun and opportunity to the site.

And I am sure Searcy is lurking as a guest around here and all I can say is, I had respect for those who contributed to this site, but I loose that respect when another human being takes on the crown of "BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE" We are all garden variety human beings cut from the same cloth, and only one person (being) is more superior than me. I have to answer to no one but him, and one day we all will have to stand before him and answer for our actions!!! So, think about that before you lash out at another!!!

Marc this does not stop here!!!! I am going to a higher authority!!!!

Actually missesjanice, Marc has reconsidered since the last post and is the main moderator again on this site along with John.

Hi TPiR Friends,

I'm still new here and learning, but was sad to hear of Marc's resignation.

Why is it everyone resigns but the man who should resign?  Drew Carey.

(I've read Marc may have reconsidered.  I hope so.)

TPiR deserves a better host.  I hope CBS reconsiders, too.

You are certainly new here. Read the rules. There is one about bumping up threads that are more than 30 days old. This might be a record. A year and 3 months? wow...Just don't do that. It's frowned upon.

Here's some help:

1) Read the rules: http://www.golden-road.net/index.php/topic,4.0.html
1a) One of the most important rules is to not bump a thread over 30 days old.  Rule #6.

2. Notice that you are the 3rd person to mention Marc's "leaving" after he rejoined the site.

Notice the post right above yours said "« Reply #46 on: March 02, 2008, 04:29:10 PM »".  That's 2008--last year.  I'm curious--did you even look at the date to see how long ago this was?

By the way, welcome to the site!

I'm speechless.....really......

Can we get a mod to just lock this thing?

Thanks

Not in this forum.  I'll ask John to lock it when he comes around, though.

EDIT:  So, I guess I'm not shown as a mod in this forum at all, huh?  That probably explains how someone has actually managed/bothered to ignore me.

If you didn't mind my asking, did you even read the posts that said Marc was not leaving this site?  Or the posts that said this thread is over a year old and therefore anything in this thread is no longer true?
