Title: TIL (Today I Learned) Thread
Post by: jlgarfield on September 15, 2019, 09:33:35 PM
Hey, board. Here's something new to this board:

This thread asks: You learn something new every day; what did you learn today? Submit interesting and specific facts about something that you just found out here. (Just like the subreddit of the same name.) Be sure to post a link backing up your statement, though.

I'll start with one of my own.

TIL that Game 6 of the 1985 World Series was played on the same day that Marty McFly went back to 1955: https://www.newspressnow.com/news/local_news/maybe-the-royals-need-a-delorean/article_5139abe5-8a84-5e05-a911-c85ddee400df.html

TIL: Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Goldbergs was a security guard who struck up a conversation with the lead singer for REO Speedwagon Kevin Cronin at a concert in Miami in 1981 and recounted the story of the encounter years later on a plane ride with Cronin.

TIL that "Song 2" by Blur was intended to be a parody of grunge culture, but was unironically accepted by the very culture it was parodying.

Nice thread idea. I love learning new things!

I'm a big fan of every series of Popeye ever made from the 1930s to the 80s. TIL: That Jack Mercer, the voice of  Popeye for 48 years until his death was not the original voice actor. William Costello was the voice from 1933-35 until he was fired for demanding too much money and skipping days during recording sessions.
