Title: Shows You'd Like to See on Pluto TV
Post by: Teddy on December 01, 2020, 11:56:28 AM
As there are literally dozens of channels dedicated exclusively to one show each, what shows do you feel would be deserving of their own channel?

I'll start with Seinfeld, The King of Queens, The Big Bang Theory and The Drew Carey Show plus Survivor, Big Brother and The Amazing Race.

I definitely agree with The Amazing Race, Survivor, and Seinfeld.  No thank you to Big Brother; the other three you mentioned would be a nice add.  The BBT not having its own channel is quite a surprise, however.

Speaking of what may or may not be available, I'd love to see American Idol as my third pick for a reality series, if it's not already there.  The FOX era, that is, but preferably the Simon Cowell era.  Those years when it was just Simon, Paula, Randy, and Ryan were the best of the series, IMO

You are in luck, they already have channels for Survivor and The Amazing Race since September.

As for me, besides episodes from episodes of The Late Late Show dating back to Craig Kilborn & even Tom Snyder along with David Letterman's The Late Show and Late Night eras would be cool to see. And if they haven't already added a classic soap channel besides the one for Dark Shadows. I think classic episodes of The Young And The Restless and The Bold And The Beautiful would be instant hits for those classic soap fans.

Wheel of Fortune, Bob's Burgers, and Arthur (the PBS show).

The Big Brother channel would only be worth it for me if they had the live feeds included. We won't see TDCS anywhere anymore unfortunately with the rights issues. It's a shame cause TDCS is a very funny show. I don't think we'll see a Seinfeld channel with it moving to Netflix in 2021 and with it still making a decent buck in syndication.

Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show era would be my pick, he was the best host IMO of the last 15 years now. And Late Night TV hasn't been the same since he left. My friend and I absolutely loved his work.

-Looney Tunes

I've seen some Looney Tunes on the Classic Toons channel (540), and they're some pretty deep cuts....even if the prints are lousy quality.

Also, the entirety of the first 29 seasons of TAR are currently available on Hulu.

How about a channel dedicated to "What's My Line?"

To start, I'd have a block of shows dedicated to the 1971-1972 syndicated season, which has not been shown in its entirety in almost 50 years. (Although sporadic episodes have been seen, usually one-offs after a celebrity had passed away.) Then have another time block set aside for the classic CBS run.

I don't know if anyone taped any of the stage shows that have been taking place in the 2000s and 2010s, but that might make for some interesting moments as well.

Among other genres, I'd start with a channel dedicated entirely to classic country music TV shows.

Y'know, those programs put out by superstars of the era and they had regular performers along with a guest each week. Shows such as "The Porter Wagoner Show," "The Ernest Tubb Show," "Buck Owens' Ranch," "The Wilburn Brothers," "Marty Robbins Spotlight" and a few others, all from the 1960s through late 1970s. (Porter ran as late as 1981 in some markets.)

Another favorite I'd put on such a channel is "Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters" show from 1980-1982. Remember a lot of Saturday nights growing up and watching this show. One of the last successful variety programs.

The schedule would be rounded out with programs like "Hee-Haw," "Pop! Goes the Country" (hosted by radio personality Ralph Emery) and "That Nashville Music" (which had a bunch of cloggers as one of the regular acts). Those shows ran mainly in the 1970s and 1980s, although "Hee-Haw" ran as late as 1992. Also a rarity from the early 1990s that tried to capture country music's growth of the time: "Hot Country Nights"; this ran briefly from 1991-1992, so this might be a once-a-weekend show since there are only 18 episodes in the entire series.

Forgot to add two obvious shows fir my classic country TV station: “The Johnny Cash Show” and “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.” Also, the 1973-1974 season of “The Dean Martin Show” that featured country music.

So many great shows that this post could go on for awhile.

For this time of year, it would be great to see a classic holiday channel (same for each holiday as they roll around), giving a chance for many of the vintage specials, both animated and live action, that haven't been seen outside of YouTube for years to reach the airwaves again.

ITA.  I’m actually surprised that Sony-owned game shows aren’t available.  In available, I mean on Pluto.  The last I checked Barry/Enright creations are still available.  For Merv Griffin creations, Wheel I think is out there.  It would be nice to have Jeopardy available, especially next year for those who would rather not tune into the show without Alex.  Of course, that’s easier said than done, but that aside, I would love for there to be a classic Game Show Central sooner rather than later

Ditto. Sony has a huge catalog of Merv Griffith/Sony, Barry-Enright, Bob Stewart and Chuck Barris games not to mention other smaller companies I might have left out. The channel could be easily paired next to Buzzr. Totally shocked it hasn't happened yet.

Edit: Does Sony on the rights to Kilne and Friends? It would be nice to see the daytime and nighttime versions of Win, Lose or Draw again.

-Sesame Street

-Classic ABC TGIF shows

-The Simpsons (Especially the '90s)
-Looney Tunes

For Sesame Street, Most TGIF shows and Looney Tunes, you would have to go over to either HBO Max or to Netflix.  For the Simpsons you would have to go see Disney+ for exclusivity.

What I would love to see on Pluto TV even though it's not available here in Canada would be the Star Wars Holiday special, Droids and Ewoks.

It would be nice to get a channel dedicated to all the MTV programming that has disappeared into the voids due to music clearance issues. Headbangers Ball, MTV Oddities, Remote Control, Loveline, Beavis and Butthead, etc. Their archive is massive and mostly lost amongst collectors.

I'd even include shows like Club MTV, Postmodern, 120 Minutes, Dial MTV, weekend concerts, classic Top 20 Video Countdown episodes, the short-lived game show Turn It Up, Singled Out, Liquid Television, and even MTV News broadcasts to see the talent in action. Yes, we have MTV Classic, but its just videos for the most part (no offense to MTV purists, but there was a lot of great specialty programming back in the '80s/'90s).

And speaking of which, their legal clients (OpSec Online) target my Internet Archive account for their 1986 VMAs. It seems like with IA's recent revamp, I fear that more and more digital clients will target more properties/users. It doesn't have a strike system and works similar to Dailymotion in terms of suspending accounts based on an undisclosed number of removals, but MTV/Viacom was a big reason why my old Dailymotion account got suspended about two years ago. But for now, tape trading/file sharing seems to be the only viable option at this time.

But of course I'd love to see a classic Dick Clark Productions channel, including AB, Where The Action Is/Happening, specials, and perhaps even Pyramid as well.

I'll third Late Night with David Letterman. Those haven't been rerun anywhere for about 15 years apparently. I know Dave didn't like the reruns competing with attention for his main show, but that's no longer an issue. Pluto should definitely focus on series with really long runs that can't realistically be made available on disc.

I would also love Richard Dawson Family Feud. Buzzr's certainly aired a generous helping of that era but I'd guess it's still a small fraction of the combined day time and night time runs. It'd be good for a Pluto channel to focus on night time since I think Buzzr's barely touched those.

I noticed the Johnny Carson channel on Pluto has edits in the episodes, seemingly for time. Where in the middle of an interview, it'll just fade out and in to remove some of the chatter. I'm not sure why, since Antenna TV airs the episodes seemingly without edits.

What about a classic Feud channel altogether? Ie: Dawson and Combs day and night? I could see that working.

And as to Carson, I wonder if they're using old copies, like Turner Classic edited stuff like they once used in small clips, or DVD/YouTube based material. I got nothing otherwise though.

Their Carson channel seems to be sourced from Shout Factory TV, which apparently started showing Carson episodes in April 2020. Shout has episodes free on-demand on their web site. I think these are the same copies with the same edits that Pluto airs. Antenna TV's Carson episodes do not have these edits, even when Antenna TV airs the same exact episode. I think Shout has their own "channel" they stream also. I can only assume Shout edited the episodes to fit in more ads when running them on their personal streaming channel. I don't think Pluto would've opted to do that, but since Shout is managing their channel, they use Shout's edited episodes.

For example, this episode is 6 minutes shorter on Shout than it is on the official Carson YouTube channel.

Surprising they don't rerun those on their own Create sub-channel, as they do with episodes of This Old House and many of their other shows.

Pluto is always free; but Pluto is owned by CBSViacom. Rephrasing, I meant that Double Dare might have been available in the free on Pluto before as part of a Nick Games channel, but then to pad CBS All Access's library, The Powers That Be could have decided to stop airing the show for free and put it behind a subscription service.

To be fair, CBS All Access is being rebranded to Paramount+ on March 4th to better reflect the content available on the service after the CBS and Viacom merger. PlutoTV is more similar to a traditional linear TV service as opposed to a typical non-linear on-demand streaming platform.
