Title: 2017 NASCAR Season
Post by: CheckGameMeBob on February 19, 2017, 05:12:24 PM
Drivers! Start your engines!

A new year means a new season for America's most popular auto-racing series.  After an interesting offseason including a new title sponsor in Monster Energy, changing the race rules, a few drivers changing teams, and Stewart-Haas Racing leaving Chevy for Ford power, the time has come for race fans from around the country to head to sunny Daytona Beach in Florida to get ready for the most prestigious race on the schedule: The Daytona 500.

For the second consecutive year, Chase Elliot is the polesitter, and his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr will start right next to him in second place.  As this is a restrictor plate race, the field will be in one huge pack that will be mostly 2 and 3 wide from front to back.  One tiny error can cause a massive pileup, and nobody wants to be caught in The Big One.

My pick to win: Brad Keselowski

Airing info: February 26, 2 Eastern, 11 Pacific on Fox

And of course as usual I'm rooting for #88 himself now that Jr is back!

Even though Dale isn't my driver, I'm glad he's back too, mate.  The sport is better when he's out on the track.

After a wild race with several huge pile ups, Chase Elliot looked to be in the catbird seat, but his fuel tank gave up the ghost with a few laps to go, and Kurt Busch earned his first Daytona 500 victory.

What a flying start for Stewart-Haas Racing in their brand new Ford engines. Bad day for Harvick and Dale Jr, as both got caught up in wrecks.

And Jr was leading the race at the time of that crash!

That was a bummer when Dale Jr. got wrecked as he was leading.

Another thing: Why was the race in segments anyway?

Another thing: Why was the race in segments anyway?

This was a part of NASCAR's offseason rule changes, where every race will be 3 segments and the top ten drivers in the first two segments will earn points, along with everybody getting points at the end of the last segment.

Here's a link explaining further details: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nascar/2017/01/23/nascar-2017-rules-changes/96963566/

To me, this just is just another unnecessary rule that makes something that should be simple into something more complicated.  Whatever happened to the car at the finish line at the end of the race getting the most points? It's dumb.  Thank goodness F1 and the Indycars don't use gimmicks like what NASCAR is doing.

Here's the Daytona 500 Radioactive.  Listen in on the reactions from the drivers and crew as the race went on.  Good stuff in here.

I think all these stupid rule changes and gimmicks has hurt NASCAR.  Ratings have taken a nosedive since 2004.

Today, NASCAR rolls into Georgia for 500 miles at the newly repaved Atlanta Motor Speedway.  The Stewart-Haas Fords continue to stay hot, as Kevin Harvick won the pole, and starting next to him is Ryan Newman, who is driving the car that Kevin used to have at Richard Childress Racing, as the two switched teams for the 2014 season.

Airing info: Today at 2:30 Eastern, 11:30 Pacific on Fox

My pick: Jimmie Johnson (sorry wpghi).  He's won the last two races here and he is a lifetime 14/25 top five finisher, and has five wins too.  You can't argue with facts, so there's that.

As for a few other contenders, keep an eye on Dale Jr, Chase Elliot, Kevin Harvick, and Kyle Busch.

The Fords are 2/2 going to victory lane, as Brad Keselowski of Team Penske took the checkered flag.

At least the 48 or 18 cars didn't win...

It seems that being sidelined during the remainder of the 2016 season might've taken its toll on Dale, Jr. The 2017 season is still young & I hope he'll get better.

Radioactive, Atlanta edition.

This one particularly sucks for me, as Kevin Harvick had the best car (he led 292/325 laps) but got caught speeding on pit road late in the race and the drive through penalty lost him the race.

Some  schedule news: Starting in 2018, New Hampshire Motor Speedway will be losing its fall race, giving it up to Las Vegas Motor Speedway instead.

I've got mixed feelings as I feel that the racing at New Hampshire was very bland, but replacing it with Las Vegas means another 1.5 mile track, and the series has too many of those on the schedule already.  A fall race at a road course would be a welcome addition for a little extra variety.

The West Coast Swing begins in Las Vegas for 400 miles of high rolling action.  Fresh off winning at Atlanta, Brad Keselowski stayed hot and won the pole.

Airing info: Sunday March 12 @ 3:30 Eastern, 12 Pacific on Fox.

My pick: Matt Kenseth

Martin Truex Jr threw down the hammer and dominated the whole race to come out on top in Las Vegas, giving Toyota their first win of the season.

It was a bad day for Kevin Harvick as he smacked the turn one wall and wound up in 39th.  Not a good day to pick him for the fantasy team either.   :oldevil:

Hopefully he'll pick it up at his personal playground next week that is Phoenix.

Totally uncalled for on Kyle's part.  I wonder if he gets a suspension?

I wouldn't count on it.  NASCAR has not been consistent in the manner of dealing out penalties when stuff like this goes down.  If the NASCAR brass does do something, I'm guessing my guess is slapping Kyle with some probation.  Joey Logano should get off scott free as he didn't do anything wrong (as far as I'm concerned, the wreck was a racing incident and not intentional) and Logano's pit crew did the majority of the retaliation against Kyle.

Lying in the shadow of Rattlesnake Hill in the Arizona desert is the next destination for NASCAR's top series, Phoenix International Raceway.  This is a one mile oval with an odd shape, so it'll provide a trickier challenge for the drivers.  The pole sitter is Joey Logano.

My pick: Kevin Harvick.  This has been his personal playground over the years, as he leads the field with a competition crushing six wins in the last ten trips, and he has eight wins overall.  When he's here, he gets dialed in and finds ludicrous speed.  He'll have to fight his way up from 23rd, so it won't be a gimmie.

Ryan Newman gambled on his well worn tires and he hit the jackpot by winning the race.  He helped to give its Chevy its first win of the year too.

The West Coast Swing concludes on the big and fast two mile Auto Club Speedway in sunny California for 400 miles of high speed thrills.  Chip Ganassi Racing's Kyle Larson, one of the younger drivers in the field and has been called the next Jeff Gordon captured the pole.

My pick: Kurt Busch

Also, here's the Radioactive from Phoenix.

Kyle Larson started out front and he ended up finishing there too as he took the checkers for the 42 team.

The action slows down as NASCAR rolls in to the Commonwealth of Virginia for 500 laps at the tiny Martinsville Speedway.  This is one of the oldest tracks on the circuit, and is a fan favorite, as the tight confines result in a lot of beating and banging, and the classic bump and run maneuver to push somebody out of the way.

My pick: Denny Hamlin

As qualifying got rained out, Kyle Larson is the pole sitter as he leads the point standings.

Breaking news: Dale Earnhardt Jr is retiring after this season

http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2017/4/25/dale-earnhardt-jr-retire-following-2017-season.html

Whoa.  I will miss him.  But with the concussion issues he's had recently, at least he will be leaving with good health.

Now the bigger question: Who will drive the 88 next year?

This is no doubt the news that I certainly did not want to hear! That I dreaded this moment! Yet considering that his health is more important I think it was a logical decision for Dale Jr to retire following the 2017 season. Though no doubt he will be missed after 2017. Being a fan of Jr for many years this to me is very heartbreaking news! But this was his decision and there is no way I can make him change his mind. Like I said again his health is much more important. Yet I want him to win more races before he does indeed retire. And if some miracle happens probably seeing him win that elusive Cup title. Lol.

Danica Patrick is also considering retiring I think.

I could see that happening if Stewart-Haas has issues finding sponsorship for her car, especially since the Nature's Bakery deal flopped.

It doesn't help that her results on the track have been lackluster.
