Allow me to say: Paul Levine is officially Mr. Bonus Game.

Was glad that Paul got to play Bonus Game again.

The only thing I was curious about is apparently it looked like they had a slightly different (and more interesting, in my opinion) intro (which is below posted by priceisright YouTube channel) that was different than the one that made it to air, namely some added graphics at the end of the intro:

And, for once, I was happy to see such short ending credits (barely even ten seconds), because that hopefully meant that they pushed the show's time slot to the limits with clips and other good stuff.

A good show. I liked the opening and seeing Paul get up on stage and win his game.

Grand: This definitely should've not been the opener when it wasn't all that winnable, IMHO; it should've been played last.

AN: The same PG order from the first show should've made up the first half, IMO. I was kinda surprised Uliana fell short on one of the middle numbers in the truck price instead of the 3 or the other 2.

Double Prices: Should've been won, but wasn't.

Pl!nko: I would've also had this played fourth. Kathleen now has won $21K in cash in her two appearances on this show!

Bonus: I wasn't expecting this to be the other car game of the day, nor Paul sweeping this!

Double Cross: Fairly easy.

Showcases: I knew both on-stage bids were garfs, but I wasn't expecting the Beetle Showcase to be worth more than the Mustang GT one.

Decent episode today.

Excellent show. Really fun and much better than I expected. The lack in clips was made up for by the returning contestants. Grand Game could've been a bit nicer and the showcases shouldn't have been so deceptively loaded, but this was a nice show.

Speaking of Grand Game, a raise in the payout! That was cool to see since we haven't had a MDS in 4 years.

Dazettia's story was absolutely fascinating. She was just given a ticket and look what happened! That's amazing.

What can you say about Paul. Not only was he called down again, but after a tough time bidding, he got to play the same game he played 40 years ago. And to boot he won it the same way with a perfecta! Amazing! That was definitely a great segment. Also, the bonus was in the same window as the first playing. And on top of that, there was a full shot of the new SP display!

Larry was something else. I think he might have been the most cumbersome contestant Drew has had to deal with. He was all over the place in his original appearance because Bob was old. Since Drew is young he was all over him! Glad to see another good Double Cross set up and win. I guess they're trying out different think cues. I liked the think music they used on the Back to School special better than what they used here, so hopefully they go with that.

Also, gone are the spotlights and sweeping intro to Double Cross! Yay! I can see!

A trip to LA? Really? On the anniversary show? Whatever you say Mike, whatever you say. Like I said, the showcases were deceptively expensive. I know Mike's heart was in the right place (no one wants a DOB on a special like this), but it came off weird.

*Oh yeah, I forgot to add that it was cool seeing Paul and Pamela spin the big wheel for the first time.

**I am extremely disappointed that ClockGameJohn was not invited.

Another thing about the video posted above: George's first four announcing was edited so that only Paul was called to "stand up and come on down". The rest were just "come on down".

But yes, I was thinking the same thing: Paul Levine is the Bonus Game master. And I can comfortably say he's the first contestant in history to win the same game twice, and the first to perfecto twice on the same game.

Grand Game for $40,000 was awesome. It's a shame the Cheez Whiz claimed another victim.

Recap won't be up till 6 or 7 tonight. Definitely before Hell's Kitchen tonight.

Yes, can't let you miss that!

EDIT: Please, keep the no Bob stuff to a minimum. There is another thread (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php/topic,20055.0.html) for this that was posted in The Talk is Right.

Who said anything lengthy that would qualify as "no Bob stuff" at a maximum?

Anyways, just caught up on my DVR and turned out this episode was great! The lineup was pretty good and the results turned out pretty darn good too! (Come on, no way Grand was going to be won there, Any # is always a toss, and Double Prices was just a poor choice)

I'll be even more excited to see what's in store for a 50th Anniversary :D (;))

This was overall good. All of the contestants were fun, there were a lot of clips even if a couple were only video, the lineup worked, and Paul Levine accomplished something not likely to happen again, exacta'ing a game twice (it should be noted Mike gave away a car for once in Bonus).

I might have called this show great if the first half went any better. A# and DP are what they are, but neither of those were particularly nice. The hardest game being first is unacceptable on a special - I know Grand here was quadrupled, but just screw it and give her a straight path! Instead not only ye olde Cheez Whiz showed up, but that damn wax paper also. And at the same time, average-looking SCs (even a little less - a complete failure on SC2, that is simply not a trip) have a really high Mustang trim and really high jewelry. Mike needs to stop exclusively caring how the show ENDS and spread the budget elsewhere.

At the same time though, the 2nd half was certainly set up for a perfect half for non-purists, including a Roger-esque Plinko that she goofed up yet still won. Just not the best balance in the world there.

Editing was also an issue - a ton of cuts and audio things, often felt too quiet. With so many clips I do sympathize some, and Drew was pretty good today.

One thing I'm glad was cut (according to MrZone) was 420 guy clip. That was plain unneeded and disingenuous to the show's spirit. Sadly the only reason was probably for time, like the shortest on-air credits ever. Looking forward to viewing those in full tonight.

EDIT: Another Cross cue? I didn't notice. I think the quick intro of the game was a product I'd editing though.

It was awesome to see the show open with a clip from the first episode in 1972.  I know that the show is broadcast in 16:9 HD, but couldn't there have been a better way to play the 1972 clip without putting a TV border around it?

The new doors look pretty good with their silver trim, but the logo on them looks too dinky, in my opinion.

Grand Game was a surprise, with a $40,000 prize for the occasion.  I do wonder if we'll see the game's prize increased to $20,000 this coming season.

It was awesome to hear George say "Paul Levine, stand up and come on down!"  Combining the original spiel and what Johnny Olson developed into the catchphrase of the show was awesome.  Although I do wonder if Paul didn't come up on stage, would they still have played Bonus Game?  I wonder if the staff was waiting for him to come on up so they could bring out Bonus Game and the 1972 Monte Carlo.  Either way, it was awesome to see him play Bonus Game perfectly and win another car (albeit one as old as the Mazda sedan he won back in 1972).  Also, I had to chuckle when Drew asked Paul if he spun the wheel and Paul replied with "There was no wheel!"

Larry is the definition of redemption on The Price is Right.  He won a stemware collection worth $736 in Any Number on his first appearance in 1999, but he lost the showcase showdown.  Today, he won Double Cross, the showcase showdown, and the showcase, including a new car to make up for the truck he didn't win 13 years ago.  Also, he played the first pricing game to debut on his previous appearance and played the most recent pricing game to debut today.

Also, it looks like Double Cross now has a blue background for the numbers and the highlighters themselves are yellow and green.  This makes it easier to tell what prices the contestant selects.  It could use a different think music, though.

I know a V8 Mustang is expensive, but it would have been very appropriate for this show to offer a nice Lincoln, Cadillac, or other high-end car in the showcase.

Was today the first time since 2003 we heard Rod's voice on the show?  On Bob's 50 Years in Television special in 2007, Rich's voice was dubbed over Johnny and Rod's "Come on down!" as contestants fell down (or when Yolanda had her wardrobe malfunction).  I hope that in the future, when the show does retrospective clips, we hear more of Rod's voice.

Wow! Overall, I have to say I felt they did a good job. As pressed for time as they are these days, they certainly fit a fair number of classic clips in - the opening was particularly cool, and it was nice to see clips of what contestants did the first time they were on the show. As great as Paul's feat was, it's amusing that we had not just him, but FOUR contestants who played a game in their first appearance that also was on the show today (out of a possible five, because obviously Cross wasn't happening :) ) I wonder if having the potential for a repeat game perhaps increased your chances of getting called. Still, I certainly enjoyed the array of contestants we got today. I'm glad that we got one particularly famous one, and a bunch of others who clearly had cool stories. Nice to see stories win out, if only for a day.

I agree that the Grand setup really did not belong on this type of show. Yes, I know the prize was quadrupled, but find some other way to celebrate "40" instead if you want to do it that way. And they seemed perfectly willing to give away a 35k Mustang at the end of the show anyway - I don't understand how logic works sometimes. Still, the setups were mostly pretty good and gave us a fair chance of walking away with a decent show. Bonus in particular was perfect - it was going to be a near auto-win with the easy SP that was picked for the bonus window, but it was nice to have a couple harder SPs in there for "suspense" - if of course Paul hadn't nailed them! Paul going 8/8 in two Bonus Game appearances is definitely one of the coolest, rarest thing you'll see - excited that that got a chance to happen. Also, if they HAD to offer a restored car, it was a nice touch to have it be a 1972 car. In general, this was just a very cool program to watch - it's amazing what happens when you let the contestants be the stars.

Oh, and they got rid of the only really bad thing about Double Cross - yay! (those blinding lights). I do like the cue that got used on the Back to School much better though - today's was barely there. Still, good to see they saw those lights were a problem. I also appreciated DC's inclusion as the 6th game in the lineup. As Torgo put it in chat, "yes, we're having a lot of fun celebrating the past, but we also have a future". Any, Bonus and DP were of course necessary inclusions as well.

One interesting feature of a show like this is that you get to look ahead a bit. I did like the new door design. I also wonder if George announcing the priceless giveaway is going to be permanent from now on. Drew never did all that great a job with it, so they might have decided to just delegate that to George. Will be interesting to see if that continues.

Timings:
Grand Game (5) - 4:34
Any Number (5) - 5:06
Double Prices (3) - 3:32
Plinko (5.5) - 4:40
Bonus Game (5) - 4:19
Double Cross (4) - 3:41
Total (27.5): 25:52

They couldn't do that. I'm sure they were planning to play Bonus Game 5th no matter when Paul got onstage. There were three other contestants who made it onstage who also had the opportunity to re-play their original game, but did not. Dazettia (Plinko then, Double Prices now), Kathleen (Grand Game then, Plinko now) and Larry* (Any Number then, Double Cross now). They were going to let the show play out as it played out and by the grace of coincidence, Paul made it up there at the right time.

I forgot to mention, I like the new light border. It's a lot better without the frame.

And here (http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb473/jjman920/NewSPTable.jpg) is the new well not all that new SP podium.

*You're right GRF. Thanks for the catch.

You know something – it's always great to see what ever became of the contestants and how they're doing now. It was great to see the two contestants from the 1970s – Paul and Pamela, and learn about the heartwarming stories of other contestants who made something of themselves after their appearance on the show.

Despite whatever failings this show had – it's a great "where are they now" piece ... and I'm glad TPiR did this show.

And quite frankly – I'm glad there was no Yolanda (or "Wheel of Fortune" Terri) for that matter. If one or both of them are dead, they can stay that way. I wouldn't have minded a Vanna White cameo, however ... that would have been nice.

Ooch, of all the times for something bad to go down, it had to be today. There was a shooting in Contra Costra County during Plinko, and the 2nd SCS was shrunken down to a small portion of the screen so that the newscopter feed of the area was shown...

My prayers go out to the officer who was injured in the shooting.

OK since I'm not sure, what's a GARF?

You know, it's been so long since I've done this, I'm not even sure what to say anymore.  I knew for daytime we shouldn't expect too much in the name of clips due to ever-increasing time constraints, but the only reason I watched this was because I thought we might get some cool clips from Pamela's original appearance.  With the number of mentions the Cullen version has received in the last five years, you think they could have mentioned Pamela appeared on a Price Is Right hosted by someone other than Bob.  Just would have been kind of nice.

If Mikey really wants to befriend us, getting us clips of stuff unseen in decades would be a good start, but that's another conversation for another time.

Speaking of Mikey, again his lack of understanding how to budget appropriately really hurt today.  You would have thought a show full of winners would be appropriate for a celebration show.  Grand Game was more difficult than it should have been.  Double Prices could have been less of a crapshoot.  I'll give credit to Double Cross.  Unless the first setup can be correct (which it shouldn't be, but I wouldn't throw it past them), it was pretty hard to lose.

Oh, and Double Cross was a bad pick for today.  Clock Game would have been much more appropriate.

I wonder how many people were left wondering what that "first item up for bids on The New Price Is Right" was.  It's not like Bob's on their good side or will ever be won over.  It wouldn't have killed them to show the fur coat.

On the other hand, seeing Paul play Bonus Game a second time was a treat.  I wonder how he answered Drew's question about what game he played the first time.  Sure, "Bonus Game" was staring before him, but they weren't using names his first time around.  I suppose it is possible he just knew, in which case, he's certainly a most loyal friend and true.

The Showcases were a big disappointment.  Honestly, to write a coherent pair of Showcases recognizing "anniversaries" and "the 40th anniversary of the premiere of The Price Is Right" shouldn't have been that hard; but I can't comment on what caliber there is for writing Showcases nowadays.  I won't get started on the "trip around LA."

Other than that, having an audience filled with former contestants being contestants again didn't really do anything for me.  Granted, I'd guess (and I hadn't seen a show in three years before today) we had better contestants than your usual show since these all passed the much higher bar contestants needed to pass to be on the show.  Every contestant was engaging and involved instead of aloof and inattentive, but I don't see anything gained by having deviated from the typical "large-budget show filled with classic clips" formula that's served anniversary shows for decades.

In fact, what would have been really cool would have been a half hour show 25th-Anniversary-Special-style, but watching Drew today reminded me of how he just can't do what Bob could do:  carry the show.  Drew still seems to be at a loss for words in places he really should know what to say by now.  I'm referring to the simple things, like what you say after a contestant makes their pick in the Grand Game or Any Number, not just repeating what the contestant said in the same tone or saying nothing until the reveal is complete.  Bob could converse.  Drew can't or is unwilling, and they've tried to fill the void by miking contestants, having the models speak and have George play off stuff the contestant said, but none of it has a natural feel.  The show seems way to structured now.  They seem to have their responses planned before the contestant even say anything, and it doesn't come across as real.

And speaking of George, this is the first time I've seen him on the show; and I can't find any nice words to say about him other than he doesn't sound like Daniel Rosen.  Why he feels the need to punctuate every insignificant word in a piece of copy is beyond me.

Great win on Bonus Game & nice win on Double Cross.

Pretty good but it could've been better, IMHO.

OK since I'm not sure, what's a GARF?

GARF is a term used in CSS referring to somebody missing their showcase by over $5000. If they miss it by over $10,000, it's considered a Garf Of The Century.

Ouch... that would be quite embarrassing to do on the actual show I bet... even worse would be a Double Overbid with both players getting a Garf of the Century

CBS This Morning had a piece on the Price is Right's anniversary this morning (http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7420428n&tag=mncol;lst;1) and they actually showed Bob introducing the fur coat.

I think The Early Show (CBS This Morning's predecessor) in 2006 showed the fur coat footage to commemorate the 35th Season premiere.

I did have the morning off so I watched in light of the 40th Anniversary... my opinions are pretty much covered by everyone else except I have one thing to say:

Today was SO enjoyable to watch, seeing the former INTELLIGENT contestants getting advice from an INTELLIGENT audience. That made a humongous difference to the pacing, gameplay, and watchability of the show today.

Great show overall. My thoughts:

I'm glad Pamela got caught in that evil Grand Game Trap.  She acted way too immature and "hammy" in my opinion.  Flame away.  I saw her original appearance on the show and she acted "much more mature and refined back then".  Too bad that changed.

I'm willing to beat a months salary that the powers that be at studio 33 had Bonus Game locked and loaded..e.g. ready to go for the moment Paul made his way onto stage.  Paul you are The Vice-President of TPIR Hall of Fame!! I have Johnny Olson as The President.   God's speed to you my fellow TPIR Alum.

Any # was hard luck.

Double Prices was obvious but the contestant gets a "hall pass" here.  Her life story brought me to tears.  Literally.

You cant go wrong with a $10k win in Plinko.

Pierre lost my respect and well wishes when he $1ered Paul and he wasn't even the last bidder in the sequence.

Double Cross still has not "warmed" on me yet.

It would have been awesome if the 1st ever showcases included trips that they show could "re-offer" again.

The only "down-side" to today was that contestants from The Drew Era could not be involved due to eligibility requirements.

Recap is posted. This is what I get for thinking HK would be on at 9 tonight.

I am aware of the off-centered numbers in Double Cross. This is a template in new design, and I am using this playing as an excuse to give it a shot. Next time you see said template, the numbers will be accurately placed.

I thought one of today's contestants had been on less than ten years earlier. They could probably waive the requirements for a special ep. like this one.

Looking at the uncut version of the opening on pir.com... my God did they edit so much out. I think they overextended themselves - otherwise, you don't edit out 3/4 "stand ups" in the opening like that, which should be untouched. I think this special could have approached a primetime timing between all the clips apparently aired in full according to MrZone and all this other stuff.

Is it me or did they changed the podium for the small prizes in Bonus Game drastically?
This happened late last/this season.

EDIT: Even worse, the SC reveal is over at 39:30 / 40:28 of the video online, and the "full" credits do not much past what was shown on-air, believe it or not. Wow, a lot more mangling than I thought!

It was massively cool that they opened the show with the opening from 0011D.

I think the game selection today was pretty good -- the newest game, the three games from the first show, Plinko, and another casher that really let them spotlight the 40.

Raising Grand Game's prize to $40,000 for this one episode really doesn't bother me.

I'd swear I have Dazettia's first episode somewhere.

Paul getting to play Bonus Game again was fantastic.  I'm sure that's what Mike wanted to happen, but there was certainly no way he could have guaranteed it.

Today's restored car worked.  If there was ever a time you were going to give away a car from 1972, this was it.

Did they change some of the colors in Double Cross?  I had a much easier time today telling what was and wasn't highlighted.

The new Big Doors look okay.  Their new logo does not.  Put simply, it's dinky.

That's the just-retired consolation prize cue.

It most certainly was not.  It's a "primetime" version of the Carey theme.

And quite frankly – I'm glad there was no Yolanda (or "Wheel of Fortune" Terri) for that matter. If one or both of them are dead, they can stay that way.

Holy crap are you a dick.

Aired – September 4, 2012; Tape Date – August 20, 2012
OOPS - Uliana's shirt had "Monday, August 20, 2012" on it.

Pamela, known for winning an airplane in the Showcase in 1976 on the Dennis James version when she wanted a car
They also threw in flying lessons, IIRC - and those can be expensive.

When was the last time the daytime version gave away a (non-microlight) plane?  The most recent one I remember was in an early-1980s Christmas Eve showcase, but then again, I live somewhere where TPIR wasn't on between something like 1984 and 1991.
I was going to ask if they were ever going to give another one way - then I went to the Piper website and saw that the cheapest plane they sell today (and it's a single-engine prop) goes for over $300,000!  That's over ten times the price 30 years ago.

I'm surprised they played both Bonus Game and Plinko - usually they don't play two games with four (or more) two/three-digit prizes.

But why no Grocery Game?

The opening today beginning with the start of the first episode was really fun to see.  The squares on the new doors look nice, but the logo is way too small.

I liked that they had former contestants come back on, even if it blocked out any first timers.  Tomorrow is another day for first timers of course, and the contestants today were a lot better than most of the regular contestants today.

Grand Game for $40,000 was pretty neat.  After the 40 count bandaids I was thinking all of the products would have 40 somewhere in them whether it be the item count, ounces, part of name, whatever, but the bandaids were the only thing.

Dazietta's story was absolutely amazing.  Game shows have been able to change the lives of many contestants by allowing them to afford something or have something they never dreamed was possible or buy/give something to someone they love, but this one had to be the most heartwarming.

The showcases were pretty disappointing.  A trip to Los Angeles is just bizarre and the 2nd showcase really should've had some sort of luxury car.  I think a Corvette would've been most fitting since that seems to be the go to luxury car of the show in its history.  And I thought Google's birthday was September 27 (same as mine)?

I was afraid that this was another screw-job on Mike's expense, but so far it wasn't too bad of a 40th anniversary show.

BTW, I'm sure some people might start to make Mike Richards voodoo dolls at some point, seeing that Bob wasn't on the special, but Bob was cool with it:

news.yahoo.com/barker-fine-exclusion-price-special-222705427.html (http://news.yahoo.com/barker-fine-exclusion-price-special-222705427.html)

Now, with that out of the way:

THE BAD NEWS:

Grand Game: So I see what Mike did here: Since it was the 40th anniversary, he decided to make the game a little special by having Pamela win $40,000, with the target price of $4.00.............Clever.  And Drew gave her the Mop N Glow, the one thing she didn't pick that could have helped her win the game. Adding salt to the wound much, Drew?

Double Prices: It was obvious for me to know that the Rome trip was $12K+ and not $14K+. Tough break for Dazettia.

THE NOT-SO-BAD NEWS:

Any Number: Uliana may have won a car on Dice Game back in '02, but unfortunately she wasn't that lucky today. I guess some appliances are better than nothing.

Plinko: I was a little scared that we might have another Plinko Stinko again, but Kathleen really did came from behind for winning $11K!

THE GOOD NEWS:

Bonus Game: I really did liked Paul! He perfected that same game back in '72 and he still hasn't lost his touch 40 years later when he won that Monte Carlo! It was nice to know that he was the exact opposite of this:
3:10 to 5:50

Double Cross: Larry still remains energetic and did good on the newest game! I think he was a little stunned when he found out he was going to the Showcase, which he won his own!

Aside from no Bob, a pretty good tribute! Now we wait for Season 41........................

I must say, the shows overall this season were much better compared to last seasons, although I don't know if that's just a side effect from the "40th Anniversary-type" season.  Today's show fits into that category as much better.

The opening on priceisright.com shows the unedited version, and appears to contain the Season 41 opening.  I must say, it looks very nice!  The logo on the Big Doors looks way too small now, though.  It's too bad they re-edited it to remove the "Stand up!" reference from the other three "first four" constestants.

Poor Paul, he just cannot escape the power of Bonus Game.  Paul is either a loyal friend & true, a genius, or both.  He just makes Bonus Game look so easy, and the fact that he aces it again does not surprise me.  It's just too bad he couldn't have gotten $1 so he could've gotten another $4 showcase difference. ;-)  Although Drew quickly corrected himself, I don't know why he asked Paul what he spun on the wheel the first time.  At least he got it right, in that the wheel didn't premiere until 1975.

I was actually shocked at Dazettia's story.  Just goes to show you that Price is Right can make dreams come true. :-)  Speaking of her, a clip of her on her 1st show got uploaded to priceisright.com.  I find the clip a bit ironic: Mike went out of his way to stop the Plinko sign from coming back, yet the clip of her online contains the full turntable reveal of the Plinko sign.  She was only one game away from playing Plinko again.

Speaking of the lineup, with the exception of Uliana and Pamela (which we don't know which game she played), the other 4 contestant's original games were in the lineup.  Would have been amazing if each one got to play their original game like Paul did.

*gasp* Did the 2nd showcase actually contain a theme?  When was the last time that happened?

Excellent show. Really fun and much better than I expected. The lack in clips was made up for by the returning contestants. Grand Game could've been a bit nicer and the showcases shouldn't have been so deceptively loaded, but this was a nice show.
...
**I am extremely disappointed that ClockGameJohn was not invited.

Thought I would say Hi! to everyone here and had to chime in... it's been a long time.

Ditto about CGJ.  I bet if they mailed me an invite, I would not have gotten it because I moved and am past the auto-forwarding period, and I still have 3 more years before I regain eligibility again.  I saw the advertisement for today's show and got REALLY excited.  Wonderful to see Paul again and how that all played out perfectly for him!  Such nostalgia with the contestants.  Hope this season has kicked off to a great start.  Looking forward to seeing new episodes.

Yeah, that's my fault. I kept looking trying to distinguish the two, I kept seeing Gwendolyn.

While Gwendolyn and Manuela do look alike, one way to tell is that Manuela is shorter.

I'm surprised they played both Bonus Game and Plinko - usually they don't play two games with four (or more) two/three-digit prizes.

But why no Grocery Game?

This has happened before: the 2009 episode where Barker returned for the Showcase had Punch-a-Bunch and Plinko in its lineup. As for why there was no Grocery Game in this episode, there's a scheduling rule that says there can't be more than one GP game in the same show. They can get away with using two SP games, but not two GP ones.

As for the show itself...

Grand Game: Somehow I knew that either this or 1/2 Off would show up, with the $40,000 top prize. And Airplane Pamela gets her chance to claim the extra loot, but loses it all in the end. It was fun to hear her story of how she wanted a car, but then "a freakin' airplane comes along".

Any Number: Uliana's story of her 2004 accident involving the car she had won in the Dice Game two years earlier is the only thing more heartbreaking than the fact that she failed to win the truck.

Double Prices: OTOH, Dazettia provided an inspirational story of how she was homeless and then got a chance to play Plinko, thanks to a passerby who was willing to give her a ticket in order to make that dream a reality. Too bad she lost in her return, though.

Plinko: Kathleen was so lucky to get $11,000 to make up for her missing out on two SP's. Along with her Grand Game win from 1984, she's now taken $21,000 of CBS' money.

Bonus Game: I guess it's safe to say that Paul is the greatest Bonus Game player ever! I don't think we'll ever see a repeat performance like that ever again. WOW, a 1972 Monte Carlo??? And a new SP podium??? I wonder if we will also see that new SP podium when they play Shell Game in the season to come?

Double Cross: Larry is still fun to watch after his "You're Bob, I'm Larry" moment from back in '99. And he won the newest game in the rotation--lucky him!

Showcases: Holy crap, those were some expensive Showcases, but I somehow expected them to be that way, since this was the 40th anniversary of the first-ever episode of TPIR. I was rooting for Uliana to win, but it was nice to see Larry pull it out in the end.

Miscellaneous: Those retrospective clips were fun to watch, and it's a good thing that Drew remembered there was no SCSD until 1975 when he asked contestants what they got the first time they spun the Big Wheel. I think that only Pamela and Paul did not participate in their first go-around because they both played on half-hour episodes then; and with the exception of TNPIR in 1994-95, half-hour episodes proceeded from the third PG directly to the Showcase round. I, for one, am sick and tired of people complaining about Yolanda, but two players I would've liked to see were Bryan (who gave up $5,000 on Punch-a-Bunch, only to win $10,000) and Velma (who is most famous for mauling Bob after winning $11,000 on the Big Wheel in one of the 1986 Specials).

Could someone explain "Wheel of Fortune Terri" to me?  I have no idea who she is, but she seems to be mentioned a lot recently.

I'll give credit to Double Cross.  Unless the first setup can be correct (which it shouldn't be, but I wouldn't throw it past them), it was pretty hard to lose.
Why shouldn't the first setup be correct?

Grand Game: So I see what Mike did here: Since it was the 40th anniversary, he decided to make the game a little special by having Pamela win $40,000, with the target price of $4.00.............Clever.
What was wrong with the target price being $4?  I thought it was nice reference.  What exactly was wrong with $40,000?  The thing I didn't like about it was that it seemed like too much of an increase, even if it was just for one show.  Was that it?  Was it something else?
As for Drew giving the contestant the Mop N Glow, I believe Drew has done that a few times before--although I might be wrong.

With that $40,000 grand prize, the standard primetime $20,000 has now been rendered obsolete. And I believe it was a one-time only thing, as was the case when they played Lucky $even with seven $1,000 stacks instead of the normal $1 bills.

I've seen Drew give contestants random GPs, especially when they lose.

I just checked the FAQ regarding the new SP podium: They will also use it for Shell Game, but not Switcheroo, so disregard the previous question. My new question would be, will the new rotating SP podium even make its way into Switcheroo sometime in the future?

Doubtful. In Switcheroo, you need to be able to see all four of the SPs at once, since you price them all at once...contrary to what Drew thinks, they're integral to gameplay.

I just watched the show on cbs.com, as I forgot to set my DVR. Just a few comments, in no particular order :). I certainly remembered Larry's first appearance. -- Bonus Game! Yay! No classic reveal, especially on the 40th anniversary show? Boo. -- Ending such a special show with a Ford Mustang?? *shakes head* -- I wonder what the contestants from the 70s and 80s thought about how much, dare I say, "expected" audience behavior and dress has changed since their first appearance.

And finally,
The new Big Doors look okay.  Their new logo does not.  Put simply, it's dinky.
Gotta agree here. Far too small.

A belated Happy 40th to The Price Is Right on CBS!

I'm fairly certain they did reveal Bonus the usual way, but it was decided to be made as suspenseful as possible in the editing room.

Why shouldn't the first setup be correct?

It's along the lines of the first price being correct in That's too Much! or Push Over.  Nobody's reasonably going to expect those to be the correct choice because they involve doing nothing.

I'm not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet, but Larry is probably the only contestant who played the oldest game on the show on his first appearance, and the newest game on the show at the time of his second appearance. I just thought that was interesting.

I honestly think one of the coolest parts of this show was when they showed the Dennis James clip that featured Anitra in the airplane!!! Now if Holly had been the one in the airplane, would that have made it to air? Just a thought. It was nice to see Anitra as one of the past cast members highlighted throughout the show (even if it isn't in name).

I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention to know the answer to this. We saw Bob, Dennis and Anitra. We heard Johnny and Rod.

Was Janice shown at any point?

I'm surprised nobody seems disappointed that there was no Golden Road.  You would think a show like this would beg for a playing of it, since its one of the most iconic pricing games.  And it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to fit in really.  Just take the two prizes played for in Double Cross and make them the Bonus Game bonus, then move AN to the second half.

I'm certainly disappointed in no Big 3, but I had a lot of time to accept it... with all the clips they had and the way this was edited to bits anyways, I guess it wasn't meant to be.

I was at first, but the good lineup made it seem less important.  Still, though, it's an absolute shame it only got played two times this season.

I was going to ask if they were ever going to give another one way - then I went to the Piper website and saw that the cheapest plane they sell today (and it's a single-engine prop) goes for over $300,000!  That's over ten times the price 30 years ago.
I managed to find the prices for Cessnas on that company's site, and they do have one (what they call a "starter plane") for $150,000, but still, that explains why they never appear on the show any more.

But why no Grocery Game?
There's a scheduling rule that says there can't be more than one GP game in the same show. They can get away with using two SP games, but not two GP ones.
Perhaps, but is Grand Game so special that they had to play it in place of Grocery Game?  Or did somebody think GG just wasn't a fit for this episode if they couldn't get Janice or Anitra behind the cash register?

My preferred lineup would have been (not necessarily in this order):
Any Number
Bonus Game
Double Prices
Grocery Game
Clock Game (even if it wasn't played in the first week, it's probably the closest they have to the original Bullseye)
Plinko (since it's probably the most popular game, especially if you ask people who aren't real fans of the show - okay, maybe Cliff Hangers)

Yeah, I'm 6 nights late watching this episode for various reasons.  That said, I walked away from the TV with one of the weirdest feelings I've ever had after watching an episode of TPIR.  Why, you ask...?

I certainly remembered Larry's first appearance.

So do I, because I was in the audience the day he appeared as a contestant back in May 1999!  (That was the first taping I ever attended, in fact...) What are the odds?  I have better odds (statistically, at least) of becoming a contestant myself than I do of being in the audience with someone who gets called up to be on an anniversary show.  That's always the way, isn't it?!

...Larry still remains energetic and did good on the newest game!

Double Cross: Larry is still fun to watch after his "You're Bob, I'm Larry" moment from back in '99.

Larry is the definition of redemption on The Price is Right.  He won a stemware collection worth $736 in Any Number on his first appearance in 1999, but he lost the showcase showdown.  Today, he won Double Cross, the showcase showdown, and the showcase, including a new car to make up for the truck he didn't win 13 years ago...

The fact that I was in the audience the day Larry made his first appearance biases me, of course; it never occurred to me that so many other LFaT remember him (though, really, how could you forget him?).  The only hint I would ever have is that I do recall seeing a clip of his 1999 appearance on Access Hollywood or some similar show fairly recently.

Larry also redeemed himself in the Showcase Showdown in another sense, goldroadfanatic; IIRC, he didn't get the Big Wheel all the way around on his first attempt back in 1999 (though I may have to check on that...).

Larry was something else. I think he might have been the most cumbersome contestant Drew has had to deal with. He was all over the place in his original appearance because Bob was old. Since Drew is young he was all over him!

Larry's energy level was no different when we were outside waiting in line before the show when he appeared in 1999.  I remember turning to the person next to me and saying, "He's going to get called to 'Come on Down'; you watch".  Little did I know...

...Also, he played the first pricing game to debut on his previous appearance and played the most recent pricing game to debut today.

I'm not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet, but Larry is probably the only contestant who played the oldest game on the show on his first appearance, and the newest game on the show at the time of his second appearance. I just thought that was interesting.

That occurred to me as well, though goldroadfanatic beat us both to the punch, CROCODILE!

In other news, I enjoyed this special quite a bit.  I'm going to bed now, feeling just a bit weirded out by all that coinky-dink stuff!

JBK

Per the 5/7/99 episode recap (http://www.qwizx.com/tpirepguide/?p=4364#.UE7NA0J1388), Larry had a puny first spin, and went over by 20 cents (55 and 65 were his two spins).

I think I would have had Any # for a $40,000 cadillac instead of grand game playing for $40,000. REALLY happy that PTR did not get playd. But the best moment of the show no doubt was Paul playin bonus game and going 4 another clean sweep

I don't think it's odd at all. The show wasn't a salute to former pricing game winners, but rather a salute to memorable contestants, and Larry definitely fit that description. Contestants can be memorable and loads of fun and not even make it up on stage.
