The Yankees start the season in dubious fashion. They have now lost six straight season openers. What that entails for the rest of the season is obviously up in the air. The Cubs, meanwhile, are the 4:1 favorite to repeat as World champs.
-
Go Red Sox!
EDITED by Steve to remove 171 of the 172 exclamation points. This does not make you look excited; it makes you look ridiculous.
-
Madison Bumgarner (Giants) becomes the first pitcher to hit two home runs on opening day.
-
Division picks: Boston, Kansas City, Texas, NY Mets, Chicago Cubs and LA Dodgers.
Wild Cards: Baltimore, Toronto, Washington and St, Louis.
Let's go Mets!
-
And MadBum's achievement's mean absolutely nothing as the Giants bullpen picks up where they left off last year.
-
Jays open their season against Baltimore this afternoon
-
Atlanta the Mets are scoreless after three. Vegas has Atlanta's odds of winning the World Series at 171:1.
-
Let's go Indians! If the Cavs could get their redemption in last year's NBA Finals, why can't the Tribe in the World Series?
-
Go Red Sox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have been warned about excessive exclamation points in the past. 172 of these are not needed.
I will leave it to the higher staff to dole out an appropriate punishment.
-
It will be interesting to see how the rule changes will benefit the players, coaches, and managers... I guess in a way to speed up the game
-
Not sure what is going on with the Blue Jays. They are 1-9 to start the season, and show no signs of turning it around anytime soon. 8-O
-
The Braves christen SunTrust Park with a 5-2 win over the Padres and (disband the team😉) are riding a two-game winning streak.
-
Finally the Jays snap their 7 game losing streak with a walk-off home run. Still 2-9 to start the season but it is still early.
-
CB Bucknor is proof that the MLB does not supervise their umpires no matter how much they say it.
-
Bryce Harper, the Braves killer, maintains his ad hoc title. A grand slam (one of two the Nationals hit last night) and 5 RBIs.
-
The hot topic this week is racism in Boston, as Adam Jones is the target of slurs, and a fan is ejected permanently from Fenway Park for his actions.
-
Kevin Gausman's second inning pitch to Manny Macado gets away from him but still got him ejected. It's getting ugly in Beantown...
The Braves send P Matt Wisler to AAA Gwinnett after a terrible outing from the bullpen last night against the Mets, who won 16-5.
-
And apparently Sam Holbrook doesn't like Adam Jones either, ejecting him last night over balls and strikes.
-
Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz can't buy a break. He's pitched great in his last three decisions but hasn't gotten any run support. Last night he simply imploded against St. Louis. AAA Gwinnett may be in his future.
-
Can Trudeau ban Vic Carapazza from Canada? This is insane.
-
Freddie Freeman (1B, Atlanta) is out at least eight weeks with a fractured wrist after getting hit by a pitch against Toronto Wednesday night.
-
This is Tyler Pill's first game and already he's an enemy in Pittsburgh for hitting Andrew McCutchen.
-
The Dodgers have shut out the Cubs in back-to-back games, and Kershaw recorded his 2,000th strikeout in the second game.
-
The good news for the Braves is that they are now in second place in the NL East. The bad news is that with the exception of Washington, the NL East is a dumpster fire.
-
Hunter Strickland hits and fights Bryce Harper over getting owned by him two and a half years ago. Okay, I don't like Harper either but isn't that a little extreme?
-
The Blue Jays have crawled back into the race for the AL East and Wild Card spots, as they are now 26-27, just one game shy of .500 after their latest win earlier this afternoon.
-
Edinson Volquez has just thrown the season's first no-hitter.
-
Edinson Volquez has just thrown the season's first no-hitter.
On Yordano Ventura's birthday no less (which he marked on social media earlier that day) and dedicated the game to both him and Jose Fernandez.
-
Bartolo Colon's ERA gets bigger with every appearance he makes. The Braves need to cut bait with him or he should retire. He's now a liability.
-
Didn't mention it last night, but in addition to the no-no. Seven grand slams were hit on Saturday, a record for one day in the MLB.
One of those grand slams (the 6th of 7) was hit by Albert Pujols for HR #600, making him the ninth person to reach that mark.
What a day in baseball.

It simply doesn't get any better than this! Congrats, Albert!
-
Baltimore's pitching staff has given up at least 5 runs in 19 straight games. Meanwhile Aaron Judge has hit 25 home runs before July.
-
Atlanta isn't doing too shabby right now. They're 32-31 in their last 63 games. Starting pitching (except for rookie Sean Newcomb) and bullpen is still shaky but the offense has kicked it up a notch.
-
John Farrell suspended one game by an umpire who told him "Get the f*** outta here!" Fair.
-
Atlanta lets Bartolo Colon (2-8, 8.14 ERA) go and eats the rest of his $12.5 million contract. They call up former Rockie leftie Rex Brothers from AAA Gwinnett to fill Colon's spot in the rotation. Brothers was a closer, notching 22 strikeouts and 5 walks in 14 innings pitched so far this year.
-
Thankfully, the All Star Game no longer has the rule where the league winning the game has home field advantage, instead going back to its roots. I'm worried though if they will pull off another 2002 incident in the years to come.
-
In a span of two days, three umpires have taken off their masks to defend terrible ball/strike calls. For God's sake, you're umpires, not bouncers.
-
Exactly. And not saying this because I'm a Jays fan, but Angel Hernandez affected the game in Toronto last night in enough of a way, that it could've meant a different outcome. Terrible strike zone against the Jays again.
-
Atlanta is back on a snide, losing 6 of their last 8. Got hammered by the Phillies last night. The pitchers can't throw the ball in the ocean.
-
Blue Jays stun the Angels, scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 11-10.
Steve Pearce hits his second walk off grand slam in 4 days.
-
Urgh. Yankees are about to sweep a four-game series against the Mets.
-
Your teams in the 2017 postseason:
American League:
1. Cleveland Indians (Central Winner)
2. Houston Astros (West Winnet)
3. Boston Red Sox (East Winner)
4. New York Yankees (Wild Card Host)
5. Minnesota Twins (Wild Card Visitor)
National League:
1. Los Angeles Dodgers (West Winner)
2. Washington Nationals (East Winner)
3. Chicago Cubs (Central Winner)
4. Arizona Diamondbacks (Wild Card Host)
5. Colorado Rockies (Wild Card Visitor)
The Division Series:
Boston Vs. Houston
NY Yankees/Minnesota Vs. Cleveland
Chicago Cubs Vs. Washington
Arizona/Colorado Vs. LA Dodgers
Under the new home field advantage rules, the team with the better record will have HFA in the World Series. The Dodgers have this throughout the playoffs.
Also, Terry Collins will retire as Mets manager after the last game of the season ends.
-
Under the new home field advantage rules, the team with the better record will have HFA in the World Series.
All I can say is it's about time!
-
Braves end the season at 72-90 (3rd in the NL East) with a win in Miami. Not a record to boastful about to be sure but better than last season’s 68-93 (last in the NL East).
-
Fieldsy's Wildcard Picks...
AL: Minnesota over New York
NL: Colorado over Arizona
-
Atlanta Braves GM John Coppolella has resigned from the team while the Braves are under investigation regarding breaking rules about the international player market. Braves' president of baseball operations John Hart will be interim GM.
-
Let the postseason begin!
My picks are...
WILD CARD
NY Yankees over Minnesota
Arizona over Colorado
LDS
Cleveland over NY Yankees
Houston over Boston
Washington over Chicago Cubs
LA Dodgers over Arizona
LCS
Cleveland over Houston
LA Dodgers over Washington
WORLD SERIES
Cleveland over LA Dodgers
-
Your picks are exactly what I'd predict Teddy. I'd rather the Cubs over Washington, but the Nationals have a pretty clear pitching advantage and I don't think the Cubs offense is great enough to carry them to win the series. Cleveland vs LA would be a great series and I wouldn't be upset about either winning.
-
My picks:
N.Y. Yankees over Minnesota
Arizona over Colorado
DS:
Cleveland over N.Y. Yankees
Boston over Houston
L.A. Dodgers over Arizona
Washington over Chicago Cubs
CS:
Cleveland over Boston
L.A. Dodgers over Washington
WS:
Cleveland over L.A. Dodgers
-
3-0 Twins in the first. That escalated quickly.
-
3-3 tie. I stand corrected.
-
3-0 Twins in the first. That escalated quickly.
And one swing later it's tied up at 3
-
The Yankees are moving on to the next round, snapping their five-game postseason losing skid; and everyone thought the Yankees were done after the first inning....
-
Arizona is Los Angeles bound. For the first time, both home teams have won their Wild Card games.
-
For the first time, both home teams have won their Wild Card games.
Well then, I'll stand by my predictions.
-
Today's pitching matchup between Verlander and Sale should be a good one.
-
Verlander delivered, Sale didn't. And the Red Sox have also lost Eduardo Núñez to injury in the first inning.
-
A cameraman for the Indians just pulled a Jeffrey Maier and even with replay, the umps let it stand. It didn't affect the game but they should know better if they're going to allow calls to be reviewed.
-
The last time the Yankees lost in the ALDS to the Indians, they fired their manager.
Can history repeat itself? Please?
-
The last time the Yankees lost in the ALDS to the Indians, they fired their manager.
Can history repeat itself? Please?
His contract is up at the end of this season. You know it's bad when one of his own players likes an Instagram comment about his firing.
Average length of these postseason games: 3 hours, 48 minutes. How's the improvement of the pace going for you, MLB?
-
The last time the Yankees lost in the ALDS to the Indians, they fired their manager.
Can history repeat itself? Please?
Joe Torre wasn’t fired, his contract was up and refused a new one. Girardi’s contract is also up after the season and hopefully the Steinbrenners will fire him.
-
I may be in the minority, but I think Girardi is doing a respectable job. He's made a couple of questionable moves, sure, but in the end, it's up to the players to produce, and they haven't come through. They are running into the same wall that Boston and Toronto ran into last year -- Cleveland pitching.
-
Girardi's non-challenge of the hit by pitch call is what ultimately cost the Yankees the game last night. When your catcher is screaming foul at you, and the batter doesn't even go through the motions of being hit by a pitch, challenge the damn play! You have literally nothing to lose, especially in the sixth inning of a postseason game...if you lose, the bases are loaded, but if you win (which you would have), the inning is over!
His excuse of not challenging because he didn't want to distrupt Chad Green's focus is utter bullcrap. Of course, Chad Green shouldn't even have been pitching at the time, because CC Sabathia was still in command and retiring batters with just 77 pitches and shouldn't have been pulled...especially when they've already over-relied on the bullpen the previous two games because of stupid decisions regarding starting pitching!
Girardi said that pulling CC after 5 1/3 was the plan all along. He needs to learn to throw away that damn planbook and make decisions based on the events of the game at the time. He's never been very good with thinking on the spot, as evidenced by all the times he gets flustered when his damn plans go awry.
I guarantee you that if George Steinbrenner were still alive, he'd have been fired years ago!
TL;DR, when the Yankees now inevitably get swept by the Indians tomorrow, it will be entirely Joe Girardi's fault.
-
TL;DR, when the Yankees now inevitably get swept by the Indians tomorrow, it will be entirely Joe Girardi's fault.
What if the Yankees win one or two in New York, and then lose the final game in Cleveland? I guess in any case, the Game 2 gaffe sealed Girardi's fate then and there.
-
Tanaka's pitching tonight.
The bullpen is tired.
They won't win.
-
Tanaka's pitching tonight.
The bullpen is tired.
They won't win.
What's the over/under for Tanaka's home runs today? I'm thinking two.
-
The Red Sox and the Yankees will live to see tomorrow at least.

They won't win.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves. (https://youtu.be/Xyh-JpWdGmQ?t=34s)
-
Now only the Dodgers can sweep the LDS, thanks to the Astros and Indians losing today.
-
Tanaka's pitching tonight.
The bullpen is tired.
They won't win.
Yankees in 5 :P
-
The Red Sox are done, losing to Houston 5-4.
-
Cubs take a 2-1 lead in their series, in spite of committing four errors.
-
Yankees force Game 5 at Progressive two days from now.
-
An amazing bounce back for Luis Severino tonight. Game 5 Wednesday night!
-
And the Dodgers move on, shutting out the Diamondbacks 3 games to none.
-
The only game going on tonight will be Game 4 of the Cubs-Nationals NLDS in Chicago, and then tomorrow it'll be Game 5 of the Indians-Yankees ALDS in Cleveland. Tribe fans will need to hope that they can avoid an epic collapse, and it will also determine whether the Astros stay in Houston for the Yankees or go to Cleveland in the ALCS.
-
Nationals/Cubs game 4 postponed due to rain.
-
There will be a game 5 tomorrow night in the NLDS to determine who will face the Dodgers.
-
YANKEES WIN! THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!
-
Absolutely unreal! A Yankee team, in rebuilding mode, and expected to finish last in the AL East, pulls off an improbable comeback against the best team in the American League. You can't write this stuff.
-
Another epic choke by the Indians. World Series last year and now this.
-
The Indians have lost their last six clinching games in a row. Terry Francona now a far cry from managing the only team to come back from an 0-3 deficit 13 years ago.
-
YANKEES WIN! THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!
Immediately what I thought of when I saw the score!
-
Drew Carey just got his heart broken again! Another fine season wasted on a postseason loss...and I don't know which is worse: losing the last three games of the World Series to the Cubs or losing the last three games of the ALDS to the Yankees.
-
World Series and it isn't close.
-
Bye-bye, Nationals!
-
Another year, another Nationals choke.
-
Revising my picks:
ALCS
Dodgers over Cubs
NLCS
Yankees over Astros
WORLD SERIES
Yankees over Dodgers

Teddy, you have the two Championship Series switched. The Yankees and Astros are in the ALCS NOT the NLCS, and the Dodgers and Cubs are in the NLCS NOT the ALCS like you have it.

I just realized my error after I clicked the Post button; my apologies.
-
Astros draw first blood in the ALCS.
-
Houston is now up 2 games to 0 after their bottom of the ninth victory.
-
25 years ago today: The Toronto Blue Jays win their first American League pennant in a 9-3 victory over the Oakland As, making them the first (and only) non-US team to advance to the World Series. Second baseman Roberto Alomar was named the series' MVP
-
Dodgers go up 1-0 in their grudge match against the Cubs.

I remember that year very well. Until it happened, I always thought about how cool it would be to see a Canadian team win the World Series; too bad the team that is now known as the Nationals never had the same chance to do it in Montreal.
-

They'd go on to beat Atlanta in the World Series, 4 games to 2, thus becoming the first non-U.S. team to win the World Series.
-
Why not put a velvet rope leading to home plate instead? Terrible rule.
-
They'd go on to beat Atlanta in the World Series, 4 games to 2, thus becoming the first non-U.S. team to win the World Series.
Yup, I stayed up past 1 in the morning to watch game 6, it was so awesome to witness it
-
Now the Dodgers are up on the Cubs 2 games to none after their dramatic victory.
-
The Yankees tell the Astros “Not in our house!” with an 8-1 decision, cutting the ‘Stros’ series lead in half.
-
The Yankees rally from 4-0 to win 6-4 and tie the series at 2.
-
Cubbies are now a game away from being eliminated.
-
The Yankees have turned a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 lead.
-
Seriously? That is NOT a foul tip.
-
Nice try, Dodgers and umps. No sweep.
-
I’m pulling for Houston more than ever. It still seems strange seeing them in the AL.
-
Interesting to mention that, as MLB reportedly is considering major realignment if they expand to 32 teams in the near future(it appears Montreal and Portland are the frontrunners for new teams if this do go ahead). For example, the proposal I've heard might have the Orioles, Reds, Phillies, Pirates, Braves, Rays, Marlins, and Nationals in a new East Division, Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Indians, Twins, Blue Jays, Mets, and the hypothetical Montreal team in a North Division, both Chicago teams, Cardinals, Royals, Brewers, Rockies, Astros, and Rangers in a Midwest Division, and both Los Angeles teams, Giants, Padres, Mariners, A's, Diamondbacks, and the hypothetical Portland team in a West Division. The supposed advantage of such an alignment should it be approved would be to cut down on travel time and keep each division more or less in one time zone.

I assume you mean Portland Oregon and NOT Portland Maine. Next time, if there's at least two cities with the same name, you should also specify what state you are talking about just so there's no confusion. I didn't know what Portland you were talking about until I got to the part about the new divisions.
-
So then, it would be Eastern League and Western League? In any case, I'd love to see it happen, although I'd pretty much rather see Charlotte and Las Vegas get the new teams.
-

I know Portland Maine is maybe a bit better known, but what about
Portland NY , PA , TN , OH, IN, MI , ND , MO , AR , TX, CT
Pretty sure most people assume Portland OR.
FYI, there are at least 5 States with a Detroit too
-
FYI, there are at least 5 States with a Detroit too
What about Springfield? There are 25 states with that town for a name. :P
-
What would the advantage be in expanding at this point? Besides getting middling talent in the expansion draft, the question is whether or not markets like Portland and Montreal can support a pro team. Montreal already proved they couldn’t; Portland possibly could pull it off, being #25 as a TV market.
-
Why can't things be kept the same way? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
-
For the first time in 29 years, the LA Dodgers are going to the World Series. If they play the Yankees, I will definitely be rooting for them.
-

Montreal has plans to build a new stadium. The city really wants to get a team back.
Ironically, before the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, there was some potential of them moving to Portland. The city still has a grant available to use for a new stadium that would've housed the Expos, had they moved there.

I mean, there's only one logical answer here when it comes to a city housing a Major League team. You'll never see a professional sports franchise in the state of Maine.
-
You'll never see a professional sports franchise in the state of Maine.
The Portland Sea Dogs would like a word with you.

-
It'll be interesting to see who those in Boston would root for in a Yankees-Dodgers World Series. They hate the Yankees and the Lakers (who play in the Dodgers' town), so I think they'll say neither (unless the Astros mount a successful comeback, in which case they'd pull for Houston then). However, the San Francisco Bay Area will definitely pull for the AL team, as they hate the Dodgers with a passion.
-
Justin Verlander (probably the ALCS MVP if Houston wins the series) saves the Astros season. Game 7 tomorrow.
-
So much for a Dodgers-Yankees series.
I'll take LA in 4.
-
The Astros make history as the first team to ever represent both leagues in a World Series. The first time they appeared in the Fall Classic (12 years ago, as a member of the NL), they were swept by the White Sox in four. Now we just need the Brewers to accomplish the same feat, and there's always next year for them.
That being said, my revised prediction is Dodgers over Astros.
-
Dodgers over Astros. I'd expect a curb-stomping.
-
Astros over Dodgers in 4.
What? I don't have a death wish- what are you talking about?
(Seriously, Dodgers in 5.)
-
As a SoCal native, I will drink the Dodger Kool-Aid as well. Their pitching is way deeper than Houston's.
-
I gotta give Houston a chance. The Dodgers will have their hands full with the Astros. I predict it will go at least 6 games.
-
Fun fact: the last time two teams with 100+ wins competed in the World Series was 1970 (Baltimore and Cincinnati, both with 102 regular season wins).
-
The World Series begins tonight! Hopefully the Astros will do better this time around, although I'm still sticking with the Dodgers, just because.
-
That didn't take long.
-
The game last night was the shortest world series game since game 4 of the 1992 world series.
-
I hate games that neither team wants to win.
-
Astros even the series with their first ever World Series win.
-
The Dodgers and Astros combine to hit eight home runs in Game 2, a World Series record. Also the two teams combined to hit five home runs in extra innings, the most in a postseason game ever.
-
Another managerial vacancy now exists in MLB as the Yankees and Joe Girardi part ways.
/good riddance
-
Astros clobber Darvish early and take Game 3.
-
And the Dodgers win Game 4, tying the series up.
-
Astros bullpen implodes in the 9th. Series is going back to LA.
-
Astros 1B Yuli Gurriel will serve a five-game suspension at the start of next season for making a "slant eyes" gesture at Yu Darvish after homering off him in game 3. Gurriel has since shown contrition for his gesture.
-
The series is going at least 6 games, as I predicted.
I think Gurriel's suspension should have been for the remainder of the world series, but that's just my opinion.
-
The series is going at least 6 games, as I predicted.
I think Gurriel's suspension should have been for the remainder of the world series, but that's just my opinion.
There are not enough World Series games left for him to serve out a five game suspension
-
Suspensions can always carry over
-
And now there is a huge difference between suspending Gurriel for the rest of the series and choosing to wait until the 2018 season.
EDIT: Not cool, Kershaw. It's bad enough having one racist in the World Series.
-
Okay, for real, somebody win this game.
-
Houston wins 13-12 in a 10-inning slugfest
-
Banking on a full seven-game series, and with Game 6 tomorrow, I'm still sticking with my original Dodgers pick, though I wouldn't be too upset if the Astros had won either.
-
Fast overnights show that last night's game got higher ratings than the Pittsburgh-Detroit football game on NBC.

No surprise. NFL ratings have been steadily declining this season.

Oregon is by far the largest Portland in the country. When I hear the city’s name, I automatically assume Oregon unless stated otherwise. I can’t imagine Portland, ME with less than 70,000 people having their own MLB team.
Back to the series, I am hoping Houston closes it out. Sadly I am heading out of town that night, so I will make due with the radio broadcast.
-
And FOX still thinks the NFL theme is a good idea to use it for baseball year after year when it doesn't fit - at least my region that has Sportsnet uses the MLB International feed for the World Series so that I don't have to hear it.
-
Game 7 tomorrow night at Dodger Stadium.
-
Houston Strong: for the first time in franchise history, the Astros are World Champions.
They are also the first American League team to win a World Series Game 7 on the road since the Oakland A's back in '72.
-
Congratulations to the Houston Astros on their first World Series win in their 55 year history.
-
Congrats to Houston, who deserved it especially since facing the devastation of Harvey. I think the biggest winners to come out of the Astros are Justin Verlander and Carlos Beltran, two amazing longtime baseball players who've never a championship until now. Congrats to them.
It's the city's first championship since the Rockets beat the Magic in the '95 NBA Finals.
-
George Springer, who belted a two-run homer last night, was named Series MVP.
-
Well, Sports Illustrated called it; they predicted a few years back the Astros would make it to the top of the world by about now, and they proved prescient.
-

At least they got it right on the nose this time, unlike a certain Back to the Future prediction that turned out to be one year too early. From 100 losses in the "league switch" period to World Series champions is nothing short of amazing, and the fact that they did it after Harvey had devastated the area a few weeks back made this moment even more special than ever before. As Rockets coach Rudy T once said, never underestimate the heart of a champion.
-
SI now says that the Astros will repeat as World Series champs in ‘18.
-
An interesting note about game 5: the Astros became the second team to come back twice from three runs down in a World Series game - the first to pull it off was the Toronto Blue Jays in game 4 of the 1993 World Series when they defeated the Phillies 15-14

While watching them knock Chris Sale around in Game 1 of the ALDS against Boston, I had a good feeling about them. I thought to myself, if they can beat a pitcher like Chris Sale, they won't have a problem. Add to that their good pitching, and they really impressed me quite a bit.
-
SI now says that the Astros will repeat as World Series champs in ‘18.
The 2000 Yankees were the last team to repeat so it's due.
-
Just read this...
According to writer Ben Reiter of SI, the Astros can remain in title contention thanks to contracts locking up the team's young core as late as 2020. Jose Altuve is signed through 2020. George Springer, whom Sports Illustrated based its bold prediction in 2014, is signed through 2021. Carlos Correa is locked up through 2022 and Alex Bregman the year after.
