I really don't have too many complaints about today's show. The only real negative things I have to say about today are both very minor, and they deal with the green screens during the second Showcase (I thought we were done with those), and the fact that we went 1/6 today.

But, otherwise, the lineup today was pretty good! Yay...car game sixth! Secret X is always nice to see, and so was Stack the Deck...really, it was all good.

Something in SC2 was cheap...but, yay, :dsw: again!

OVERALL: 4.5/5.

Nothing too much to complain about.. Drew is doing a good job keeping the energy up despite the multiple losses in games. I thought it was funny when he gave shout outs at the wheel instead of karen, but i could see why people would not like it.

Really really good lineup today. These lineups the last several shows have shown quite a lot of improvement over what we have been getting the last several weeks. Keep 'em coming, Adam.

The Most Expensive loss today was ridiculous. The sofa might have been the most expensive if it had been from highbrow, but Broyhill? Forget about it.

One Away last?!? Yesssssssssssss. It's about time we saw a car game last--it seems like it has been months since we've seen one last. What better way to bring back the car game last (other than Lucky 7) than by playing One Away. Let's see this more often.

No, we're done with the green trip screens. They're still using the green screen columns for prize backdrops though... I don't really see the problem with that, as long as they don't put an image on there that makes you want to vomit.

Push Over:  Ester had it and she pushed one more number over - how heartbreaking!
Stack The Deck:  Another heartbreaking loss!
Most Expensive:  Karen did the reverse - oops!
Range Game:  Missed by only $12 - rats! :-(
Secret X:  Fate sure smiled upon Gisela! :-)
One Away:  Curses! :-(
Showcases:  Wow, another :dsw: - awesome! :-D  It sure is rare to have 2 dsw's in one week and to have 3 dsw's in 7 shows!

Pretty good show overall, IMHO.

Push Over: Before it appeared, even I had a feeling an actual Harley might be the big prize. In my opinion, Ester took too long to get the first numbers in place, relied too heavily on the audience, and blamed them for loss. I thought there was only two possibilities: 12157 and my guess of 15749.
I just love it when a contestant relies too heavily on the audience and blames them for their loss instead of relying on their gut instincts. [sarc]

One Bid 2: Destinee McKenzie?

Stack the Deck: I think if Benjamin got the second product right, he probably would've picked the third number. I think you just have to select the last three numbers and the rest would be a cinch.

One Bid 3: "It's 980." No, it's 1450.

Most Expensive: Missed it because of a phone call. I need to see what this range looks like...

Range Game: Oh, so close.

Secret "X": That clock looks nifty. I hardly see anybody winning with only one possibility.

One Away: Why was I expecting Lucky Seven here? Anyways, I had one of those weird feelings that 16749 would not be right. 18949 was not better.

Showcases: So the outcome was the same as Tuesday's: Overbid then a DSW. Unbelievable.

-Lineup: Car Game 6th = fantastic!! Stacky too! +2
-OB1: They made it a little too obvious what was coming.
-Pushy: It was really too bad she pushed just a little too much while she was looking at the crowd. They definitely had it right. Another slow player too? 7/10
-Stacky: Wow. All 3 GPs needed to be gotten to have a win w/o a crapshoot. I felt really bad for him. 8/10
-ME: Karen really made this segment great, even though it was a forced loss. But she should have at least picked the trainer. 7/10 +1
-SD1: Wow, she did get some cash! 5/5
-Rangey: A so-so setup right inbetween 1/2 and 2/3 up the scale. 8/10
-X: Set up to be won, thankfully. 9/10
-OA: Wow, that Cobalt was actually loaded. It's too bad she repeated otherwise she would have had a nice win. 8/10
-SD2: 4/5
-SC1: I love the Roadster. Things flowed pretty well here. 5/5
-SC2: Green screen pillars? You mean we didn't get rid of these yet? :( 4/5
-Results: Holy crap, what a bid!!! (Yeah, Italy isn't that much, or the sailboat for that matter. At least she got $1000) 11/10
-Drew: I think he took his assisted dollar a bit too far, otherwise on the ball again on the DSW - 8/10

PGs: 47/60
SDs: 9/10
SCs: 20/20
Drew: 8/10

84 + 3 = 87 --> B+

Tough setups (which mean 8 for a loss instead of 7, or 6 for bad gameplay), good contestants, a much better lineup, and the DSW made this a nice day to remember, so a 1/6 and B+... sure, why not? :)

-Opening: Benjamin... that's not a podium. Nor should you be aiming for the red one.
-Whoa! A prize that directly relates to the OB? That's really cool how the prizes are starting to naturally click with one another outside of the showcases. One Right Price's playing a couple of days ago is another example of this, in a different aspect.
-Pushover had two legit prizes, but $21K wasn't one of 'em.
-Two plaid shirts in the row today. What a coinkydink. Somehow, I think the OB price-stalling is a bit overdone at times. Once the price became $1---, there was only an $18 spread for Benjamin to lose, in this case.
-Ahh! Thought 8 was the third number as well. I question his choice to take the last number somewhat... but I still feel bad for Ben. Too bad. Had he done the fourth and third numbers, I think the 6 would be a pretty good fit for the last number... but hey. Stack the Deck's tough like that.
-LOL KAREN!!!
-Looked like a spiky pie in the oven for Most Expensive. The pricetags kinda make you feel stupid once you see the massive price spreads. It's that same situation as Stack the Deck, while I would've done one thing differently (the sofa?!), I still feel really bad, considering how Karen's one of the best contestants around. (and besides, I picked the home gym. D'oh!)
-SD 1: A bust on a dime? It *really* wasn't Benjamin's day. And why would you, Drew, EVER stand in front of a celebrating contestant? You're "aiding" the contestant, not "taking full credit" for it. My gosh.
My bet: That ticket plug's gonna vanish before we're through with this season. ^^
-OB 4: Another swing and a miss on a surfboard. Not as bad as the $9,000 incident several years back... but.
Now I've kinda changed my mind on the stall reveal... I don't think it really serves much purpose at all.
-Range: No green light? This is where I started smelling a skunk. Hard loss.
-OB 5: That's a REALLY bad place to use the stall reveal.
-Secret X: That's a cool alarm clock! (Probably even cooler by the demo it got) And I think that's totally a snipe shot... that $83 tempted me as well, but yet that one X was enough. And my skunk fears immediately retreat. :)
-OB 6: Another Chargers fan. Heh. And I think Cathy's friends were *really* excited to see her finally escape.
-One Away: Nice pick for the 6th slot! I knew that there's no way the car could only be $16K, and the P/FP combo would kill the last digit- and I said that before I saw the fourth number. Oops, I think I need a seat in the sin bin for that.  8-)

Showcase Bids: (and my figuring)
SC1: 1500 + 5500 + 24670 = 31670  ($-4004)
SC2: 799 + 6500 + 9495 = 16794 ($-497)
Weird green screens... especially the camera zoom-in.

---

Good show. But I hope they stay off the drama reveals for the One-Bids, personally. :)

Solid show today -  Another DSW, and a car game sixth! And One Away at that! Awesome!

Minor correction here, Joe: Stack The Deck has actually appeared one other time since Boxing Day, on the 2/6/2009 episode. Still, it's not getting that much play so it was nice to see it show today.

Pushy:  Thanks a lot, audience.  <grumble>®...

Stacky:  Benjamin had the right idea in taking the last two numbers for free, but he really needed that third free digit to win.  That second set of GPs was hard, so the game pretty much hinged on that.

ME:  Karen is a real delight.  Put her down as a nominee for Contestant of the Year.  It just sucks that she got caught with an evil setup in this game.  That was one sexed-up range.

SCSD #1:  The Wheel has been on fire all month!  I can't recall this many bonus spins and bonus wins occurring in a single month before.

One-Bid #4:  The $5,250 bid was not nearly as dumb as the two $9,000 bids we've seen in the past, but it's good to know that surfboards continue to produce some of the dumbest bids. :-D

Away:  Yay!  A car game sixth! :P

SC #2:  Shoot the green screen columns!  The cameraman obviously broke rule #1 of green screens:  Don't zoom in or zoom out!

My showcase bids:
Car--$35,107
Boat/Italy--$19,107

Result:  Wow, a third stage DSW in the past two weeks!  I must say that if we're not in budget mode now, we're about to go into it.

The Wheel has been on fire all month!  I can't recall this many bonus spins and bonus wins occurring in a single month before.

I counted. If I counted correctly, we've hit $58,000 on the Big Wheel in February, including four $11,000 wins.

That's a hot wheel all right!

What were the stats like last season, it seemed like a record number of $1,000 wins(ever since the 70s)
Title: Re: FULL RECAP - TPiR 02/26/2009
Post by: holdme on February 26, 2009, 10:04:03 PM
There was a very high number of cash bonuses awarded on the wheel last season. There were 96 $1,000 winners, 8 $6,000 winners, and 6 $11,000 winners, for a total of $210,000 given away. That's definitely WAY above average for a season of TPIR; however, it was topped back in season 30 when $265,000 in cash bonuses was given away. It probably would have been even higher in season 30 if its episode count equaled last season's at 190. There were only 175 episodes in season 30.

It doesn't look like we'll be anywhere near these types of numbers this season, but if we keep going at the rate we did this month, who knows?

It looks like we could top last years DSW count this season as we've had 5 so far, and we had 7 last season.

This show was awesome!  Drew didn't do anything stupid the whole day, and there were times when his hosting was downright good, most notably while he was tossing to commercial after Push Over and Stack the Deck.  Telling people that they won their IUFB works a lot better when it's said with a vibe of "I should console the contestant" instead of "I need to make it sound like we didn't waste the last five minutes."

Karen was the most memorable contestant in ages!  She was just so excited about...well, everything, and her shirt was even in Dom Casual!  It's just too bad she wasn't nearly as good a player as she was a contestant...I have no idea how she managed to lose Most Expensive so badly.  But God, was she fun!

When Drew turned the center column over in Secret "X", Gisela exclaimed something like, "Oh, it isn't over?"  This puzzled me until I realized that Drew had never really explained that the tic-tac-toe had to involve the secret X.  He probably ought to do that.

One Away got played sixth!  Yay!  The sixth games have really been fantastic this week...first Danger Price comes back, then we get a grocery item game, and now we've gotten a car game.  I really hope this keeps up.

I can't believe there've been three DSWs in the last seven episodes.  That's an incredible streak.  Has this ever happened before?

The only truly bad thing about this show was the green screens placed behind the boat in the Showcase.  The combination of the rolling waves and the zooming camera was almost enough to make me dizzy.

Push: $21K for a Harley-Davidson, Ester? Not for that particular one.

Stack: If only Benjamin not choked on the $6,29 item, He would've had a sureshot on winning the car. Too bad.

Most: When I saw that professional range, I had a clear hunch it would be the ME. How could Karen choose the sofa?

Range: If only Derrick let it go a little higher. Too bad.

Secret: Lucky guess for a lady who thought surfboards cost $5250. Nice.

One Away: Over $18K for a Chevy Cobalt??!!  :-o :-o   No need to explain what would've happened to me.   Too bad.

Showcases: When Gisela bidded $35,500 on her showcase, I expected it to be over at least $41K just to be sure, but my instincts were roved SOOOOOOOOOOO wrong again.  :-o :-o :-o This has to be the luckiest and surprisingist  :dsw: :dsw: :dsw: :dsw:  this season. WOW!!!!!!!!!

A 3-star show.

One thing that makes me wonder is why they made the effort with the green screens in the first place when, during the "parade of prizes", you could see the flower-patterned backdrop behind the boat.  The patterned backdrops would have looked better to the in-studio contestants than just green columns, in my opinion.

Drew really overdid building up those showcases. They really weren't that impressive at all. But then again, I guess we'd rather have him overrating prizes than underrating them as he did in the past.

I'll tell you what's being overdone, though... DSWs! We've been having a major DSW drought for most of the season, and now out of nowhere, the floodgates have been opened. They're happening left and right now!

BEST CONTESTANT OF THE DAY: Karen
SHOW GRADE: 2

Yay, Karen was absolutely awesomely hilarious!  Such a real shame that she didn't win a whole lot, though at least she did win some cash like she wanted :).

Yay... a car game sixth!  Should've seen it coming, considering the sixth slot has been getting better the past few episodes.  Well, I guess after Secret "X," I did see it coming!  If it wasn't going to be Lucky $even to break the streak, One Away is the next best way to go!

I think you're being harsh there, rob.  While it should not have been lost the way it was lost, it was going to be lost, regardless:  the exercise thing had "most expensive" written all over it.  How many Joe Plinkos were really going to choose the litty bitty oven instead?

Regardless of how good or bad the image is, it looks really bad when the camera zooms in or out, like happened today.

Been waiting to get this off my chest all day...

Karen in Most Expensive
Telling people that they won their IUFB works a lot better when it's said with a vibe of "I should console the contestant" instead of "I need to make it sound like we didn't waste the last five minutes."

Though I never feel that Drew says it as if to say "you haven't wasted your time on stage", Karen made me realize today that a lot of contestants, probably in the heat of the moment, absolutely forget all about their one bid win. IDK why a lot of us see an issue with that.

Same thing for the showcase recap. I suffer from some weird Adult A-D-D and this season Rich's recaps really help out those who can't seem to remember what happened two minutes ago...(or, for the record, I'm usually half distracted or actually doing something important while Price plays in the background...)

There were three DSWs over the course of two weeks in May 2006.  That included back-to-back DSWs from May 24 and 25.

Karen was a complete nut. She's the exact kind of contestant who makes TPIR interesting.

There was a very high number of cash bonuses awarded on the wheel last season. There were 96 $1,000 winners, 8 $6,000 winners, and 6 $11,000 winners, for a total of $210,000 given away.  ...
Was 175 the average of episodes per season back then, or was that below normal? Because Season 30 was the season during which we had the 9/11 attacks (2001-02).

175 was the indicated norm from Price Season 27 until Drew took over.

Very nice to see a double showcase win in this episode. I'm very glad CBS chose to play this one today.
