John Tavares was named Leafs captain tonight.  In their home opener, they beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3 - next game is against Columbus on Friday

I just watched the Blues raise thier Stanley Cup banner with "Gloria" going full blast in the background. Nice moment. :)

Meanwhile the struggles continue for the Ottawa Senators, not only in terms of being winless so far (0-3), but they can't fill the seats. The recent home game by them only had 9,204, and I wonder if the team could be sold elsewhere down the road if they can't get the numbers up?

Going to bump this but whatever way you look at it from a certain point of view, the big news is that Don Cherry has been let go by Sportsnet effective immediately. At the same time he has been controversial with some of the issues in the past, and this one with regards to the poppy incident recently cost him his job at Coach's Corner. It will be interesting to see if Sportsnet will continue the segment if at all, and whether if anyone will replace Cherry should that happen.

They've probably been looking for a reason to fire him ever since they took over HNIC. Guess that's one less reason to watch it now for me, although I haven't in a long while to begin with. Pretty much end of an era.

I'm geniunely surprised they had the guts to fire him. I thought they'd just issue a token statement and he'd be back next weekend.

I used to watch him all the time in the 90's, and thought he was funny, but I guess as you get older and you see things in the world changing you realize that his spiel isn't so funny any more.

In other NHL news, Michael Hutchinson has been put on waivers by the Toronto Maple Leafs after an 0-5-1 start to his season.

The one thing I did like about Don Cherry was his selection of suits and ties, sometimes weird ones in some cases.

Meanwhile, there are calls for Don Cherry to be reinstated by a virtue of this petition (which as of this moment is over 240,000 signatures and counting).

He was a flashy dresser, no doubt about that.

Rogers is in an unenviable position. If they did reinstate him (which is unlikely in the extreme), they get criticized by one side, who will probably want to boycott them. If they don't, people will probably say "Rogers dosen't care what we think" and likewise want to boycott them.

I notice Bobby Orr has come out in support of Cherry.

Meanwhile, the Leafs after getting off to a pretty good start early on, have been struggling in recent games and are currently 9-8-4. Yet for some reason they still sell out game after game this season compared to other Canadian markets where empty seats have been an issue, especially Ottawa.

Sportsnet is now planning to explore new formats for the first intermission, but that doesn't mean the Coach's Corner segment is history as of yet.

Brian Burke might not be too bad in Coach's Corner.

Effective today, the Toronto Maple Leafs have relieved Mike Babcock of his coaching duties due to losing six games in a row this season. Replacing him will be Sheldon Keefe. A similar situation occurred a year ago when the St. Louis Blues fired Mike Yeo and hired Craig Berube that resulted in them winning the Stanley Cup. Who knows, could history repeat itself this season? That too also happened in the NBA last season.

Dallas Stars have fired Coach Jim Montgomery as a result of “unprofessional conduct.”
