Title: 2006 NHL Playoffs
Post by: heelsrule1988 on May 08, 2006, 12:15:29 AM
I watched a hockey game in its entirety (almost; about 80% of it) for the first time in a long, long time on Saturday afternoon. But boy, was it fun. The Hurricanes put a whooping on the so-called "red-hot" Devils, 6-0. I'm not usually one to watch hockey, but I have to say, I enjoyed it. It almost makes me want to go to one of their games. Too bad my mom hates hockey, so that's not happening this year. Oh well, go Hurricanes!

It's only been until recently that I've started to follow the NHL, however I've been following college hockey for quite some time.  Being at Cornell this year for grad school I've gotten the Sabres feeds and they're a very exciting team to watch.  Given that I root for the Bills it's been easy to become a Sabres fan.  The OTT/BUF series hasn't disappointed so far.

The Devils WILL be back!  Even if we do lose again in this series, the game will be a lot closer.

GO DEVILS!

Hurricanes are up 2-0; sweet! Of course, the last time we were involved in a series in which a team had a 2-0 lead, you saw what happened. It was good for us that time, but hopefully what goes around doesn't come around for us this time.

W O W

Avs fans have got to be hurting right now.  There was Briesbois with a clear shot along the boards, but he instead slaps it into the middle and lets the Ducks shoot the one goal that puts them up 3-0 in the series in OT.

ouch; If I were an Avs fan... I dunno, I'd rather not think about it. :D

I feel bad for any Avs fan... that hurt.  Ducks up 3-0... what a surprise!

The Hurricanes are virtually a lock to be in the Eastern Conference Finals after a 3-2 win over New Jersey tonight. We've got a commanding 3-0 lead in the series, and it would take a Red Sox-like comeback to eliminate us. How awesome is this? It's so nice to see my state get represented like this.

Hey, what about the Sabres, they beat Ottawa again tonight. Now they are up 3-0.WOW!!.

AND the Oilers finally get a win against the Sharks in Triple OT!  That was pretty insane, and it was even more insane that I stayed up to watch the entire time!  :-D   But hey, it's support!  Series is now 2-1 in the Sharks' favour, but that's amazing considering how crazy enough, all the other series going on are 3-0.

Let's go Oilers!  Whip them another time!

I listened to that game on XM.  What a finish.  This game was proof positive that the most exciting thing in major professional sports is Stanley Cup Playoff overtime.  However, the question is now, how much will these teams have left tomorrow night?  My guess is that the crowd will carry the Oil to a win to square this series at 2's a side.

Needless to say I'm pretty bummed right now. I guess I can take solace in the fact that most people didn't even think the Avs were going to make the playoffs this year, and we at least got to eliminate the 2nd seed in the West.

I would like to now announce that my support is behind Edmonton in the West and Buffalo in the East.

About last night's most absolutely awesome and thrashing of a hockey game... That has got to be the biggest comeback and pounding ever!  The crowd was fairly quiet up to the second half of the second period due to the Sharks' 2 goal lead (cut to one by Horcoff, but then the Sharks scored another one), but then everything just exploded!

Oh boy, Toskala had a very bad off night.  Especially when he went to clear the puck and OOPS! hit it right on Samsanov as he shot out of the penalty box and right into an open net.  Cheering at the TV was probably just as loud as it was if I went to the game.  Getting pulled after letting in 5 goals wasn't a good sign either.  Tsk tsk!

Back to the Shark Tank we go, but this time around, we have the devastating bite.

Congratulations to Carolina for knocking off New Jersey.  Buffalo and Carolina battle in the Eastern Conference finals.  I think it will be a hard fought series that should go to six or seven games.

Another stunning 6-3 win by the Oilers!  That's the first road game win of the series, and I believe that having the home ice advantage next game will allow us to trounce the Sharks and get into the Western Conference finals!  Bring it on!
Title: Re: 2006 NHL Playoffs

Game 3 will be looked at as the turning point of this series.  Edmonton has played like a champion the last three games and deserves a win Wednesday night.  Let's see... I think that would make game 1 of the West final Sunday night, May 21. (Yeah, I'm making assumptions, but the way this series has played out, how can you not expect the Oilers to take Game 6?)

AND THEY DO!!!

The Oilers win Game 6 with a shut-out of 2-0, ending the long, long 14 year drought of not advancing past Round 2! The turn around back in Game 3 really helped us win the series, scoring victories in 4 straight games.  Oh man, I can't explain how excited I am!  :-P  Roloson is just absolutely amazing!  Underdogs rule!

First it was fried Wings... now it's boiled Sharks... Up next, BBQed DUCKS!!!

... I can already taste the sweetness of victory...

Title: Re: 2006 NHL Playoffs
Post by: CrimsonViper on May 18, 2006, 03:26:47 PM
I believe we are quick to adapt to the opposing teams' playing style, and then using it to our advantage.  For example, checking the Sharks constantly certainly paid off.  It was just like their strategy, except we gained the upper hand and sealed their fate.  Where's Thorton and Cheechoo, the two deadliest snipers on the league? :-P  They barely mustered enough offence, let alone vying for shots on goal.

As one sign last night said, "The Cheechoo Train Has Been Derailed!" :-)

Anyhow, bring on the Ducks!  You know they can't swim well in Oil, right?  :-D

1) Hurricanes don't "touch down". Tornadoes do.

2) You're pretty confident after only one game. I wouldn't be getting too excited yet. Just ask Montreal about that.

And Patrick, you better hope the ASPCA doesn't see that picture. ;-)

Indeed I am!  It ended the same way as Friday's game: an empty net goal.  I hope we can sweep the series at home; then I can pray we get to cook Buffalo to complete the main course. ;-)

... Although it'd be fairly ironic if we had to mix the Hurricanes with the Oilers... :-)

Great news for Heels..... Hurricanes win tonight 4-3 to even the series at 1-1.  I predict a see-saw battle which I think results in this going to the maximum of seven games.  My prediction to win the Stanley Cup, Carolina, will prevail.
Title: Re: 2006 NHL Playoffs
Post by: heelsrule1988 on May 23, 2006, 12:24:25 PM
...and that 4-3 score is very misleading. We had the game under control ever since the second period. Buffalo just scored a meaningless goal with only a couple of seconds to go. Now, it's a best-of-five series. Time to silence HSBC Arena!

Although we horribly gave up a 4-0 lead early in the third period, the Oilers held on for a 5-4 win, giving us a 3-0 lead in the series!  The cheering crowd was definitely a wonderful welcome compared to those lame cheers back in Arrowhead Pond at Anaheim.

LET'S GO OILERS LET'S GO!

Hey heels,

Usually when someone asks a question like that, the answer is NO.  Remember the 8 seeded Knicks in 1999?  They may have looked unstoppable in the East Finals, but eventually they got a reality check once they met the Spurs.

No offense, CrimsonViper.

In terms of upsets, I'm always reminded of the '94 Nuggets beating the Sonics in the first round, the first time an 8 beat a 1 in the NBA. So low seads beating high seads is nothing new.

That's got absolutely nothing to do with hockey, because it's a whole different game!  It does not offend me one single bit, because I know the Oilers will try their hardest, and I believe they will go very far.

Hockey and Basketball do have a lot of similarities though.

-- Virtually the same number of teams
-- Same number of games during the regular season
-- Same playoff seeding and divisional structure
-- 5 on 5 action
-- Fights
-- Tend to share the same arena, except Detroit, they have to be different and play in that... whatever you want to call it.  It's OLD!

Crimsy, even if the Oilers lost every game 3-0 from here out, they already have the best season I've seen since I was 3.  This bodes quite well for their franchise. :)

And between Carolina and Edmonton; you gotta go with the OILERS.  The history, those great uniforms, and just the best fans.

...no offense, Heels.

Alright, there was fault to my argument, because seeing 'no offence' tacked onto by my name really sparks something within.  No offence to you. :-)

I was too young to experience the dynasty (I was born in '88) and this has been absolutely amazing.  All these years of doubting the Oilers will do much except getting shot down by the Dallas Stars (pun intended) have gone away, and I am ready to support the Oilers all the way, no matter how they perform.

The 5 Stanley Cup wins, the same uniform throughout (third jersey doesn't count), and total mayhem and insanity from everyone.  Who needs to be at the arena to cheer?! :-)

And who said Carolina was going to advance? :-P

Can't wait to see what happens.  Do it for me man; so I can drive freely through the 5 and the 57.

Congratulations to the Edmonton Oilers for making it to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 1990.  This proves that the upset over mighty Detroit was no fluke.  Rolson is the main reason why.  He is like Giguere in 2003 and Kiprusoff in 2004.  Like Giguere in 2003, he came out of nowhere.  Hot goalies can carry teams all the way.

YAY!!!

It's such a shame I missed the game (I was at a graduation banquet), but this is just freakin' amazing!  I guess printing that picture of two fans with NES Duck Hunt guns in the newspaper helped. ;-)

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we will win the Cup of Lord Stanley, and who cares if we were the eight-seeded team and whatnots; that had no bearing on our performance at all.  Eliminated the top-seeded Wings, reduced the powerful Sharks to smithereens, and now shot the Ducks in Disneyland!  Bring on Buffalo!

Feel free to donate to the "Buy-Crimson-A-Roloson-Jersey" fund. :-)  It would make a wonderful birthday present.

EDIT: That image doesn't work. I'll just give you a hyperlink instead.
2nd EDIT: Good luck to those Oilers. Have Buffalo slip on your slick, good oil; or, if it's Carolina, may the oil spill cause more damage to the hurricane than the hurricane to the oil spill (hopefully none). I doubt anyone but me gets what I said if the Stanley Cup is between the Oilers and Hurricanes.

Well, those Hurricanes are up to a Category 4.  An OT goal 8:46 in gives Carolina a 4-3 win and a 3-2 series lead.

WHAT A GAME!!! The Hurricanes have roared back to take a 3-2 series lead with a 4-3 OT victory!!! We were down 3-1 in this game, but stormed (no pun intended, honest!) back to win it in OT. Wow. Just, wow. I wish tickets to these games weren't so freaking expensive, because I want to be in the RBC Center so bad. Judging by the decibel meter OLN used at the game, it was as loud as ever. Man, I want to go. If we get to the Stanley Cup, even if I don't get to go to a game, I'd love to go to a sports bar in Raleigh so I could share the excitement with other fans. It's boring celebrating by myself, especially since my mom doesn't like hockey, haha. But wow, what a game! I still can't say I'm a big hockey fan, but I will say that I no longer despise it. I respect it now, and if somebody invites me to a game, I'll take them up on the offer. :-)

No worries... we lost 2-1 in OT to Buffalo, but that sets the stage for a dramatic Game 7 in Raleigh. It'd be sweeter to win at the RBC Center in a Game 7, so this isn't totally bad. I like our chances.

In this case, I believe Edmonton is George Mason, and we're Florida. Hurricanes in six. North Carolina finally gets a professional sports championship at long last. :-)

Dude, from what I saw last night, Carolina's best goalie is better than Edmonton's best goalie! 'Canes won last night because of Cam Ward because, hadn't he been there in the last couple of minutes, Edmonton would have probably won it 6-5 or something like that ...

So, yeah, if they win, it's gonna be because of Ward!
Title: Re: 2006 NHL Playoffs
Post by: heelsrule1988 on June 06, 2006, 12:08:57 PM
Cam Ward = incredible. The guy makes the most ridiculous saves. Heck, Franc, forget us winning the series because of Cam... we've done well in the entire playoffs because of Cam. We would've never been in the Stanley Cup Finals had it not been for him, I think it's safe to say. I just hope we either sweep or win it in 6, so I can (hopefully) be at the RBC Center when they win. The RBC Center is having watching parties for all of the road games, so I can go to those. Home games, though, I can't go to... much as I'd like. Not everybody can pay $100 just for a seat in the highest spot in the arena. :-(
Title: Re: 2006 NHL Playoffs
Post by: logikreader on June 06, 2006, 05:19:53 PM
-- the highest spot in your arena is still a pretty SWEET seat!  Its a lot like the Pond in Anaheim, small place.

You should check out Staples Center; while the seats in the upper section are very nice, the LOWEST row up there is still higher than the highest row at RBC.

It's time for a long rant.

Quote
I agree. Roloson is the reason Edmonton made it this far and now that he is gone, the Oilers may not only lose the series, they may get swept.

Remember, there is no "I" in "TEAM".  I know that you, UltraPrice, are cheering for us to get defeated, and I hold nothing against that.  Heck, some people here are even thinking so too.  But the playoffs were not just for Roloson to shine and take all the credit for getting us to the final destination; it was a team effort.  Roli may be gone, but that does not mean we've lost our last line of defense, our trump card.

Quote
I'm afraid to say this, but I think Edmonton is in a lot of trouble.

That's probably true, but that does not mean we won't be able to pull through.  Our odds may have been cut down, but we also have a chance to win the Cup.  Losing Roli is not the end for us, and don't you, nor anyone else, ever forget that.  Cockiness won't win the war.

Well, it's time I get this off my chest.  I've always been a fairly pessimistic person, yet I do have the confidence and courage to turn things around.  That was how I felt after the game, that I was probably going to get slaughtered here on the forums while Carolina's support skyrockets, which is what has been seen here.  And obviously, I don't blame it; we just couldn't seal the game.

And I thought about it a little, that after my comments and pride for the Oilers after each end, it might have probably hurt you guys a little, so this backlash is what I truly deserve.  I'm sorry if I sounded like this would be a trash-talking battlefield, and it was about time to bring the hammer down on my attitude.

However, this doesn't mean I'll give up on the Oilers.  After discussions everywhere today, it doesn't matter if Roloson is in or out.  We may stumble, we may have a broken heart, but it ain't over until it's finally over.  The Oilers will lose whenever there is no support left in this town, and that isn't going to happen anytime soon.  Don't count us out, at all.  If you do, you're making a costly mistake.

(Besides, Cam Ward is from Alberta.  That's why he's so talented. :-))

Thank you for reading, if you made it this far.  Good luck Oilers, may your souls be blessed with courage.

The RBC Center is quiet now, but in a little over four hours, the place will be rocking for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals. Man, I wish I could be there. At least I'll probably be there for some of the road games, though. After the amazingly awesome time I had in the Dean Dome for UNC's Final Four viewing parties last year, I'm sure the parties for the Hurricanes will be just as fun. :-D

I thought this would be a close game, so I never expected Edmonton to lose big time 5-0.  Markannen played poorly (probably should of started Conklin), but the rest of the team did.  They need to regroup and in a hurry.
Title: Re: 2006 NHL Playoffs
Post by: CrimsonViper on June 08, 2006, 04:51:34 PM
I will say it once again: It is not only the goalie's fault the Oilers lost!  Markkanen, for doing the best he possibly could after sitting out for months, did a decent job.  However, I am going to blast the others this time around.  Getting stupid penalties that allowed too many PP goals, and couldn't score on such great oppurtunities really did us in.  So stop trying to single out Markkanen; it's not his fault.

Quote

I don't know where you're going with this, but the Sharks won their first two home games and being up 2-0 in the series, which parallels what happened here.  I apologize if I misinterpreted it.

Game three tonight!  I'm excited for it and I think it'll be a great game.  A win by Edmonton will get them back in the series.  If Carolina wins, they have it almost wrapped up.  Only one time in Stanley Cup finals history (twice in the whole NHL playoffs) has a team down 3-0 came back to win.

Such respectful people those Canadians are. Continuing to make noise and doing a "Let's Go Oilers" chant during the U.S. national anthem. So much for being friends, I guess.

And Cash24, congratulations on making totally stupid comments. You're acting like just because you won this game, we're totally awful now, and you guys are the team to beat. I don't think so. Maybe I'm a bit disappointed by that loss, but still, those were some pretty uneducated comments.

I've never been much of a hockey fan, but I watched the game tonight, and it was exciting.  That was an incredible amount of energy the fans displayed, and both teams had just as much energy.  It was a fluke goal that won the game, but then again, what could have been a legit goal for the Oilers was waved off earlier by the refs when they lost the puck in between the goalie's legs, so it all worked out.

And heels...I think it's a bit too far to say that Canadians aren't our friends just because some sports fans made noise during our national anthem.  They weren't exactly quiet during Oh Canada, either.

Another fun one.  Edmonton scored its 4 goals in four different man situations:  full strength, power play, 4 on 4, and shorthanded.  And a shorthanded goal to win the game in OT?  Wow.  I have to admit I'm rooting for the Oilers in game 6, if only because I'll be on a plane while it's happening and I'd love to see a game 7.

The way the game played out tonight, I give the advantage to Edmonton.  Carolina has been worn out physically in this series.  This is the first physical team the 'Canes have played, and to have this series go the distance, Carolina may have trouble keeping this one close.

No worries. I love the setup of a Game 7 at the RBC Center for the Cup. It wouldn't have been the same if we had won the cup on the road. I think it'll be a thriller, but we'll take the Cup.

Finally, the epitome of euphoria and triumph is upon us.  It can't get any, possibly any, more exciting than this.  The game may be not be played here, but that doesn't matter.  The Oil have the momentum, they have the skills, they have the burning in their hearts, and we will win the Stanley Cup!

We believe!  We have the faith!  We can make miracles on ice!  Bring in on, for the final time.  Let this be the most exhilerating battle of all.

I only caught bits and piece of last night's extravaganza, was it the stick busting fiasco of the previous game?

Gotta be one of the best tournies in history, oilers down 3-0 and about to throw in the towel, and come back with 3 straight wins. Ya know, even though I'm American, I gotta put my 1 dollar on the Oilers. THE COMEBACK KIDS!

Alright! Even though I'm a diehard Sabres fan, I'm rooting for the Oilers to take it all on Monday night. The Hurricanes have been messing in Oil Country!

Actually, it was a 3-1 lead, and they won two straight.

GAME 7! GAME 7! GAME 7!

Sorry. I must calm myself down. I've been waiting all season for something like this. This rocks.

It's easy for you to want a Game 7 since your team isn't involved. If you were in my situation, I'm not sure you'd be as excited as you are right now. ;-)

Interestingly enough, this is the third straight Stanley Cup Finals to go the distance. The last time the Finals didn't go seven games... well, you know. Hopefully that bad memory will be erased in just 22 hours.

May the best team win.

(Oilers, of course.  We believe!)

2-0 Carolina after two. Hopefully, the Oilers can mount a huge comeback in the third.

CV, be very proud of your team.  They fought back very valiantly in the Finals.

Carolina fans, Congrats.  One small thing; keep the Cup in good shape for us, since next season we're holding the victory parade in South Beach.

Sincerely, the Florida Panthers

Wow. Who would've ever thought that the first professional sports team in North Carolina to win a championship would be a hockey team? Amazing. Thank you, Hurricanes. I'm certainly a hockey fan now. Not die-hard, but it's definitely not a sport on my hate list anymore. This is so awesome. :-D

Congratulations to the Carolina Hurricanes!  2006 Stanley Cup champions!  All those verterans playing for years without a Stanley Cup on Carolina deserved it.

Cam Ward was unbelieveable.  I wish Detroit had him.  He deserved the Conn Symthe trophy.

Well, Carolina won! Congratulations to you guys, you fought hard and you deserve it.

Is it just me, or was this playoff a goalie affair? First Roloson makes miracles for the Oilers, then there is Cam Ward who came out of nowhere to keep Carolina in the run. And when Roloson got injured, that pretty much sealed the faith.

But hey, still, the 'Canes worked hard, and they deserve it! Enjoy it! And keep it nice and shiny : It's coming back home to Montreal next year!! ;)

First off, congratulations to the Hurricanes!  I'm really glad some of the veterans that have been in the NHL for ages finally get a taste of Lord Stanley.  Cam Ward deserved the Conn Smythe; he was brilliant.  And Alberta-born, too! :-)

I am most proud of my Oilers. (Heh, I sound like I own them.)  Barely squeaking by into the playoffs, then disposing the top-notch Wings, the sniping Sharks, and those quacking Ducks.  At least I was mentally prepared to bear the possibility of us losing, and this isn't such a blow.  They have given the city so much hope and inspiration, and it's been quite an amazing ride all through the playoffs.

Does anyone even bother to read what I wrote?  Roloson's injury may have thrown off some motivation, some confidence, but it was not his fault that we lost.  Markkanen, for a guy whose been sitting on the bench since March, did a fantastic job for what it's worth.  Missing Roli did not seal the FATE, but it certainly made us put more FAITH in the team.

Until the next Stanley Cup Final...

That's the thing... you guys didn't expect to get this far at all. You were probably prepared to lose to Detroit in the first round. So you've definitely had a great season. Like one of the commentators said last night, it's hard to realize it now, but you guys have accomplished a heck of a lot. Just when we thought we had you guys in five, you took us to seven, and made us sweat it out a bit in that final period. The young Oilers will be around for a while, that's for sure.

As for me, I'm headed to the parade in downtown Raleigh tomorrow afternoon. I'm really pumped for that. :-D

It's true.  After that first loss to Detroit, I thought it'd be a classic Dallas pounding, except with the Red Wings, of course.  Who knew, who knew.

Breaking records and historical moments came along with the journey through the playoffs, but that took a backseat to chasing Stanley.  I still think it created a great amount of pressure on the Oilers to complete the task and top it all off with a grand victory, and that's probably why we failed to win the Cup.

I should check out the festivities going on down at City Hall tomorrow.  Maybe I'll meet Roli! :-)

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heelsrule1988/Carolina%20Hurricanes%20Downtown%20Raleigh%20Parade/ :-D

Considering the heat and the fact that they already had a parade at the RBC Center last night, this parade was short and sweet. I'd say it lasted about 30 minutes. The main stage was right in front of the Capitol Building in downtown Raleigh, and the players rode to the stage in cars down a half-mile parade route. I've got tons of pictures in that link above if you want to see them.
