Originally went to the obit thread to post this, but then I realized that it'd be kind of strange to keep posting in it through 2018.
Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, passed away at the age of 90.
Among members of the Mormon faith, he was considered to be a prophet and priesthood leader; he addressed millions of Mormons around the world regularly for over 54 years.
He is remembered for espousing the philosophy, "Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved."

Governor Brendan Byrne (D-NJ), age 93 on January 4.
The Continental Airlines Arena (home ice to the New Jersey Devils) was formerly known as the Brendan Byrne Meadowlands Arena.
-
I actually saw Brendan Byrne in October because he was an honoree at my workplace's/alma mater's anniversary dinner and he definitely did not look good then. He wasn't able to get up or speak. So unfortunately I knew he didn't have much longer. RIP Mr. Byrne.

Very sad. About three episodes from finishing the series for about the third time (for me, more times for the friend I'm watching with)

Two from the music world:
* Daryle Singletary, 46, up-and-coming country music star of the mid-to-late 1990s, died early today (Monday, Feb. 12) at his home in Lebanon, Tenn., of unknown causes. His best-known hits were "Too Much Fun" and "I Let Her Lie," both 1996 top 5 country hits; and the 1997 No. 2 hit "Amen Kind of Love":
https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2018/02/12/country-singer-daryle-singletary-known-90-s-hit-too-much-fun-dead-46/329076002/
* Vic Damone, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 11, of a respiratory illness. He was one of the last of the true pop vocalists of the pre-rock era, having a No. 1 hit in 1949 with "You're Breaking My Heart" (he was just 21 at the time, very young for the era) and a top 5 hit in 1950 with "My Heart Cries For You":

-
Former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards has died at age 74:
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/temptations-lead-singer-dennis-edwards-dead-at-74-w516296
Just passed this one up -- was a member of the group during the late 1960s/early 1970s phase. Sang on hits like "Cloud Nine," "I Can't Get Next To You," "Ball of Confusion," "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." He replaced original Temptation David Ruffin, who had been fired in 1968. Could do ballads as well as the urban funk that the Temptations became known for during their late 1960s/early 1970s phase.
Brian
-
And a followup to my previous post on Daryle Singletary ... the deaths are starting to come for 1990s singers. On Jan. 23, Lari White passed away after a battle with cancer:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2018/01/23/lari-white-dead-52/1060245001/
Lari had a string of hits in the mid 1990s, reaching the top 10 with hits like "That's My Baby," "Stepping Stone" and "Now I Know." Also recorded a duet with Travis Tritt and wrote several songs for acts like Tritt, Pat Green and Lonestar.
RIP.

David Ogden Stiers, remembered as Major Charles Emerson Winchester on M*A*S*H, of bladder cancer, age 75.
-
Also a major loss for the disciples of the Disney Renaissance, for which Stiers participated frequently, most notably as the voice of Cogsworth, but also with Governor Radcliffe, Notre Dame's Archdeacon, and Dr. Jookiba to his credit.
-
That's rough. I loved Stiers in MASH. RIP.

I never saw M*A*S*H, so only knew him as Kumajii on Spirited Away. Nonetheless, it is very sad.

Indeed. I used to watch M*A*S*H* our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. He will be missed in the years to come.

One of them I recall very well (even though I've never been in L.A.); John Young being the announcer:
"Now: Jerry Dunphy...Tawny Little...Carl Bell's weather...and Gary Cruz on sports. This is Prime 9 News at Ten: Southern California's most honored newscast."

Long time kids show host and cartoon voice Chuck McCann (Sonny the Cuckoo Bird from the Cocoa Puffs commercials), age 83. Cause not known.
-
Also liked him as Duckworth; his laid back take on the character contrasted well with Scrooge's over the top tantrums.
-
I best remembered Chuck McCann for some memorable commercials he did:
(1) The 70's ads for Right Guard, in which he reaches through his neighbor's medicine cabinet ("Hi, Guy!") and steals his neighbor's Right Guard. ("Mona!")
(2) A 1980 ad for Jack In The Box (also featuing Nedra Volz) in which the clown gets blown up. ("He's going bye-bye, lady!")

Wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino (https://sports.yahoo.com/bruno-sammartino-wrestling-legend-dies-82-150905681.html), age 82 following an illness.
I'm from the Midwest, so when I was young (during what was Bruno's second run as WWWF champion), we never saw him in action; we had the AWA, with Nick Bockwinkel and Verne Gagne. But watching tapes in later years, it is easy to see why Bruno is a huge legend in the business, a huge influence to many and why he is so revered.
One has to wonder what might have been had Bruno (grudgingly, given his distaste for the what today would be seen as softball angles, and opposition (no one could blame him there) to steroids) agreed to remain with the WWF in the late 1980s and into the 1990s, and possible feuds with guys such as the Undertaker, Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Diesel, Triple H and Shawn Michaels.
I am glad he was able to make peace with the WWE and able to give some pointers to the new group of stars who will entertain us for years down the road, long after his passing.
This is a huge loss for professional wrestling. Indeed, as someone has stated, "the champion has left the building."
RIP to the Living Legend.

Spider-Man's co-creator Steve Ditko was found dead in his New York apartment; he was 90. Ditko also helped Stan Lee create Doctor Strange during his time at Marvel, but left the company at odds with Lee for reasons never fully explained (one commonly given reason has been a major disagreement over the Green Goblin's not revealed at first identity, which reportedly Ditko wanted to be a complete stranger while Stan argued that would have been a cheat--although since Norman Osborn was only formally introduced 2 issues before the reveal, whether that would constitute a cheat or not is your decision)

As the first president elected in my lifetime, the elder Bush will always be somewhat special for me. And while he'll likely only be judged by history as average, he always did have a likeability to him even when making impossible promises on no new taxes.

Saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Fralic. I remember he used to appear on professional wrestling programs as well, most notably the Stars and Stripes Challenge on Independence Day 1993. I remember he was the closest of all the challengers to bodyslamming Yokozuna before Lex Luger showed up.
