Title: Upcoming College Football season
Post by: 03F5man on August 27, 2012, 10:50:12 AM
College Football starts up on Saturday what game looks the most interesting. My pick is #2 Alabama vs #8 Michigan with Alabama winning in hopefully blowout fashion

No love for the Thursday games? A top-10 team in action on Thursday. #9 South Carolina at Vanderbilt. Also have Boise State vs Michigan State, I believe on Friday.

Is USC bowl eligible again now?  If so, they might have a good chance to win it all.  Likely, whoever does win the expanded SEC (which I hope hasn't erased the Tennssee-Alabama matchup, which has long been a personal favorite of mine) likely also has a good chance.

In accordance with what was mentioned above, hopefully the realignment insanity will at least slow down if not stop after this year; they already have the conference map looking ridiculous as it is, and hopefully will come to their senses that they're only hurting the fans by jumping where the money goes.  While it probably would be an overreach of authority to ask the federal government to intercede (even though they do have precident in this very area with Theodore Roosevelt's intervention to save the game when players were dying left and right at the turn of the previous century), hopefully someone high up in the NCAA can in the foreseeable future draw up a more geographically correct conference system and give the universities financial incentive to maintain them that way.

To elaborate on the above point, I would, after reducing the number of teams per conference to allow a championship game to 10 so they could still have one and get the money therefrom, draw it up, at least at this moment, like so if the decision was mine:

BIG EAST:
EASTERN:  Boston College, Connecticut, Rutgers, Temple, South Florida, and any of the former 1-AA New England schools that move up from here on,
WESTERN:  Penn St., Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Syracuse, Louisville, Cincinnati

ACC:
ATLANTIC:  Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Duke, Maryland,
COASTAL:  Clemson, Wake Forest, South Carolina if they'd choose to move over (although they'd still work well enough in the SEC as long as the Clemson game is maintained), Georgia Tech, Miami, Florida St.

SEC:  Same basic alignment as before this year, although possibly with Arkansas and South Carolina moving back to where they'd been previously

BIG 10:
EASTERN:  Ohio St., Michigan, Michigan St., Indiana, Purdue (with an offer at least made to Notre Dame to join this division, with the guarantee the USC and Navy games would be retained),
WESTERN:  Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin

The Southwest Conference would be in essence reborn, with Arkansas offered a lot to come back.  If they would decline, it would appear as:

NORTHERN:  Oklahoma, Oklahoma St., Texas, Texas A & M, Texas Tech (Arkansas would be in this division as well),
SOUTHERN:  TCU, SMU, Houston, Baylor, Rice (and perhaps offer UTEP a chance as well)

CONFERENCE USA:  East Carolina, Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa, Southern Miss, Marshall, and as many other of the low level teams as they could manage

BIG 8/12:  Colorado, Colorado St., Air Force, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas St., Missouri, Iowa St.  Should the teams in North and South Dakota and Montana jump fully up to 1-A, they would be offered this first.  In lieu of divisions, the top 2 teams would meet for the conference title on a neutral field

MOUNTAIN WEST/WAC:  Both conferences would be combined to create:
MOUNTAIN:  BYU, Utah, Utah St., UTEP, New Mexico, New Mexico St., Boise St.
PACIFIC:  Fresno St., San Jose St., San Diego St., UNLV, Nevada, Hawaii, with anyone else I've forgotten sifted in accordingly by geography

PAC-10:  The classic Pac-10, although if they wanted to do divisions, with the winners still meeting:
NORTHERN:  Oregon, Oregon St., Washington, Washington St., California,
SOUTHERN:  Stanford (although the Axe game would be locked in as perennial), USC, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona St.

Does this appear to be workable if someone acutally did take it up?

The Tennessee-N.C. State game should be interesting Friday night in that Vols WR Da'rick Rogers has been kicked off the team. They play that game at the Georgia Dome. Saturday's Navy-Notre Dame will be a curio in that they're playing it in Dublin, Ireland. CBS airs the game at 9 AM ET.

The Georgia Bulldogs' first three games are presumed gimmes--Buffalo, Missouri and Florida Atlantic. My nephew and I aren't buying it for a second. Appalachian State-Michigan, 2006, anyone?

That would be Pac-12 ;)

Though, I agree. At worst, USC is probably looking at playing in the Rose Bowl, but they are a strong favorite to get to the Championship Game

Tomorrow's Texas A&M-Louisiana Tech game (7:30 PM, ESPN-U) has been postponed due to Hurricane Isaac.

I just wonder how many teams r gonna get screwd over by the BCS this year. And hopefully Michigan does not get a BCS game like last year they did not deserve one they should have been in the Capital One Bowl or something

Only time will tell, but the Wolverines do look in good shape to go far themselves, especially with Robinson back.

It's too early to be talking Heisman. The first games haven't even been played yet. Anything can happen at anytime between now and say, week six.

Following the 84-0 pasting Oklahoma last week, Savannah State now has to face Florida tomorrow. State is getting 70-1/2.
