I like the new way they're starting to set up Money Game. No decoys... all the non-1x/2x numbers are legitimate choices for the last two numbers now. It makes a win look that much more hard-earned.

BEST CONTESTANT OF THE DAY: George

Is the show in budget mode or not?  Consider the evidence....
- We get Most Expensive with prizes which total over 10K
- Later, we have a pretty cheap Mexico trip in Double Prices
- But, BOTH showcases exceed 50K, with a large pool/spa that must be 20K
- A showcase features a Lincoln with 2 trips...
...but the trips DON'T include airfare (???)

Odd, just odd....

Trip to Wisconsin for 4 (RT Coach LA --> Madison WI, 6n Kalahari)

I think Madison is the last place in America anyone would want to be right now.

/protests aside, I do love it there

First and foremost... YAY!  No Steve White!  George Gray is back!

That was no surprise... the exercise package in Range Game was OVER 9000!

Baggy was its usual impossible self.  I didn't think that anybody in his right mind would've thought toothpaste would be only $1.89, but Drew was actually right on that one.  I would've put the cough drops in the $1.89 bag and the toothpaste in the $2.90 bag.

A trip to Wisconsin... speaking of which, is it me or does new Wisconsin governor Scott Walker always look like he just... on second thought, I better not make obscene political jokes on this forum.

My showcase bids:
:frbs: --$51,107
Lincoln--$55,507

Yeah, I knew that SC1 was gonna be sexed up and Drew wasn't in the ballpark with his bid.  Swim spa = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I think Mike was hoping slashing the trips down (which they were, by like at least $8000 between the two of them) would cause the Lincoln to be overed, and thus on the other showcase, many of the very sexed-up items would be rejected by Drew after the show. That way you give off the air of extravagance while really giving away nearly nothing. So, we're still in a perennial budget mode.

However...if this truly was the thinking, it was so incredibly flawed, because everyone garfs luxury cars, and, most likely, not as bad as the other showcase, which you could honestly construe as 25k today if you didn't know about the spa. There's only been like 3 overs since the start of last season on luxury car showcases, honestly (unfortunately, 2 heels w/ 1 WSD, other a WOTC). Also, it clashes so horribly with the other setups today that it makes you wonder why Mike thinks this direction works.

As for Baggy, as Fireball stated, Drew actually got the hardest GP today, but managed to blow up on the other two "actual" ones after the 2k. That was semi-frustrating.

Well, you know, it's a trip so you can see those AFSCME broads protesting their collective bargaining rights instead of pushing around little old ladies from Florida.

I thought the Baggy set-up was pretty easy. I've seen the throat drops and the Aim on the show before, and I see the same size package of Aim at the dollar store. I also knew that the trash bags were not $5.49 or $12.99. Sometimes it literally does pay to watch the show regularly.

Range Game however was more of a crap shoot than it usually is (with the 1970's 150-dollar range) because there were three prizes, including a personal trainer for a year.

I wish more people would actually think about the prices in Switcheroo. Some small-prize prices make more sense than others.

George's come-on-down had me starting to root against him right away, but he was "lively".

I liked the second showcase, but all that driving?? Hmmm... $3000 for gas is nice.

The showcases just continue to be more ruined by the day. I'm not sure if there's any good reason for both of the ARPs to exceed 50k on a normal show, unless we just want to bankrupt the show in two weeks.. And some of the trips today just were a whole new level of bizarre. Wisconsin in one showcase and Utah in the other? No airfare in the 2nd showcase so you have to DRIVE yourself across the country? I think Mike must honestly think that it would appeal to people to drive from Utah to Key West, but you have to then have the vacation time to get 12 days off work plus the time it takes to drive across the country. Maybe Mike is just getting more and more intense in his desire to have contestants decline prizes in the showcases, but still, this is very weird and does not make the show look good.

The rest of the show wasn't great either today, ending a week of general malaise. Switcheroo continues to never be played well at all, Bag continues to be set up very hard, etc. It was nice to see George Gray back behind the podium though (if only because anything would be an improvement over Steve), especially since he was sounding a bit better than he did when he was on the show previously (looks like he practiced in the off time). It's a shame this show was not exactly a warm welcome back.

A lot of people were criticizing the lineup in chat today but I'm fine with it. It's In The Bag CAN go 7 minutes sometimes if someone makes it all the way and so Adam has to plan for that. It was nice to see another pretty long game (Switcheroo) paired with it today for a change of pace, even if the rest of the games had to be quick. It was also nice to see Switcheroo somewhere other than the 1 or 5 hole for the first time since Adam started doing lineups.

Timings:
Range Game (4) - 3:06
Most Expensive (3.5) - 3:49
Switcheroo (5.5) - 4:53
Double Prices (3) - 2:48
It's In The Bag (6.5) - 5:24
Money Game (4.5) - 4:03
Total (27): 24:03

GEORGE!  Or perhaps more accurately, NOT STEVE!  It was so good to hear somebody who's got a clue how to announce, even if it wasn't either of the best ones.

Drew was much better than usual today.  Even most of the things he did that bugged me bugged me because they were different, not because they were bad.

Most Expen$ive wasn't supposed to be won, but I don't think it was supposed to be lost the way it was lost.

I know these Thursday shows were aired out of order and probably planned accordingly, but it still bothers me when they play Double Prices two episodes in a row.

Speaking of Double Prices, it was quite a surprise to see it played for a trip at Door #2.

I'm almost at a loss for words over the trips that weren't actually trips in the second showcase.  Not only is that hard to bid on, it's freaking cheap.  That's how trips were set up in Season 1 because the show didn't have any money to book airfare with!

I'm also baffled about why they would pretty much guarantee that a $50,000 showcase would be given away a week after a 3 Strikes win.  There is no way they could afford those.

Baggy was its usual impossible self.  I didn't think that anybody in his right mind would've thought toothpaste would be only $1.89...

I did...but then, I work in a drugstore.

A trip to Wisconsin... speaking of which, is it me or does new Wisconsin governor Scott Walker always look like he just... on second thought, I better not make obscene political jokes on this forum.

Odd Price connection:  If I remember correctly, Scott Walker is also the name of the guy who wrote the lyrics to Splendido!.

However unlikely it would be to actually happen, a DSW today would have been worth over $105K. Would that have been a record for a daytime show? I don't remember off the top of my head how much of Vickyann Sadowski's total was from her DSW and how much from the car she won in her game.

It would not have been a record because Vickyann won over $147,000 on the first episode of Bob's final season

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I'm wondering if the $105K+ DSW would have been a record for a Showcase win on a daytime ep.

I really don't notice (or care about) the losses when a show is entertaining, like today's was. It made my sick self a bit happier. :)
Yeah, in spite of the 1 for 6, there were several things I really liked about this episode.

I thought Drew had a good episode building rapport with the contestants and with his humor. (But sometimes I think Drew does a good job hosting episodes where others see him as bored). I liked how he noted the model's reaction to contestant Drew drastically underpricing the concealer.

I also like the line-up. It's In the Bag is perhaps my favorite money game (or second to Plinko). Honestly, I probably enjoy a so-so playing of It's in the Bag to a win in Grand Game. I like to see some of the less common car games, so it was nice to see Switcheroo. And Most Expensive is one of my favorite of the simpler games.

And for the second time in the past two weeks, we get Manuela in a bikini during Double Prices!  :-D  Folks often discuss perceived bad set-ups regarding game play and how they can lead to a overly difficult or boring playing. But someone seems to know how set things up as far as matching up a pricing game with the right wardrobe and my favorite model. Double Prices gives a model a lot of screen time with close-ups. It's a much better choice than going with the bikini in Squeeze Play, for instance.

I agree with the criticism of the road trip Showcase. It would be cool to go on a cross-country road trip, but it's lame to be painted into a corner by the Showcase that way. On the other hand , the $3,000 in "gas money" could be used for airfare instead. I wonder if that's something that was mentioned off-camera.

PriceFanArmadillo, I haven't seen the show yet, but reading over your recap it looks as if some of your information from the 2nd SCSD is mixed up. Just thought I would point that out.

It's, uh, not my recap.  Kitch edited his usual recap into the placeholder post I made.

Trip to Wisconsin Dell - $11,153

...what in the blue blazes?  I just drove up to the Dells three weeks ago, and there's nothing remotely close to $11,000 worth of trip up there.  Did they throw in the deed to Ho-Chunk Casino or something?

If I remember correctly, Scott Walker is also the name of the guy who wrote the lyrics to Splendido!.

Steve, time to get a pet....reallly... :-)

Odd Price connection:  If I remember correctly, Scott Walker is also the name of the guy who wrote the lyrics to Splendido!.
Scott Walker is also a former Carolina Hurricane who knocked out the Boston Bruins in game 7 of a series in the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2009. Not that this is a TPIR connection, but I still wanted to mention it for obvious reasons. 8)

I thought it was cool how Drew commented on the way Christine skipped onto the stage, saying it would be cool to edit in a meadow and put it in slow motion... then ending the segment with airing Christine skipping across the stage in slow motion!  Even if they didn't edit in a meadow ;).

Anyone else notice that yesterday might have been the first time all season that Drew didn't say "our special guest star announcer" at the top of the show?

re-sized for people with bad eyes.

I'm pretty sure we would have seen an announcement if he has in fact been hired.

It certainly hasn't been the first time. There have been a few occasions where Drew has just said something like "<name> is here! <name>, everybody!".

Wouldn't surprise me if George Gray was hired, though... aren't Richards and him chummy?

Plus, this isn't the most recently taped episode to air. Both the Feb. 17 and I think another as well taped a week after this episode and featured Steve White.

Switcheroo:  Better than nothing.
Double Prices:  Thank you for keeping the skunk out, Shelly! :-)

An okay show overall, IMHO.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I'm wondering if the $105K+ DSW would have been a record for a Showcase win on a daytime ep.

THe showcase Vickyann DSWed on on the Season 35 premiere was just under $90K($89,746 I think), and the other showcase was over $20K, so no.

But you bumped the thread for your show before it re-aired.  There's no double standard.  Are you pretending not to understand?

Dude, it's been explained to you that you shouldn't have bumped the thread before the episode aired.

Besides, it's over. It was one thread, you made a minor mistake, you were told where you went wrong and now it's over. Just let it go and move on.....it's really NOT that huge a deal.

You know we have a rule that topics should not be bumped after 30 days of no replies.

Especially for a piece of trivia like that.  There's more flexibility about it when a show re-airs, and it's generally considered acceptable to bump its recap thread with a new reply--but only if you have something relevant and thought-provoking to say.  This post fails both of those as far as I'm concerned.

But first things first:  Squall, you said you "don't see it posted anywhere," referring to the tape date.  The tape date of this episode is at the very top of the recap that was posted, so either you didn't read the recap thoroughly enough or simply missed it.

That said, Kitch has a tape date listed of 31 January 2011, not 1 February.  If you feel like his information is in error, fine, but I'd suggest you at least cite a source if you want to try and get him to change it.

i just happened to do some reading of recaps on episodes that I had been too in person (and this was the first taping of the day), the day of taping was the birthday of myself and contestant Shelly (her and I talked a bit in line) but, i'll try to do as suggested.
