I know at least one other member that's hurting about this one besides myself, but James Ingram, an R&B legend during the 1980s with "Just Once" (one of my favourite R&B songs period), "Somewhere Out There" (a duet with Linda Ronstadt) and "Baby Come to Me" (a duet with Patty Austin) passed away today at age 66 due to a bout with brain cancer. Such a magical voice is gone too soon.

I'm one of those members hurting right now. Right before learning of the bad news, I was just came across some of his minor hits and was like this guy is underrated
While many wouldn't put Mr. Ingram at or near the top of their lists or playlists (partially due to the era we're in), whenever his songs came onto my playlist or the radio or music apps, it was must-listen music. Agree on Just Once being a top hit (pretty much all his work with Quincy Jones). Loved his late 80s/early 90s hits "I Don't Have The Heart" and his duet with Michael McDonald of Doobie Brothers fame (Yah Mo Be There). That's just to name a few out of a lot of his work. RIP, James Ingram.

'80s R&B in general is underrated outside of the obvious pop crossovers (Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, which we still miss today), and many of these acts perform at "jazz" festivals, further giving this music its rather "stogy" label. Sandwiched between the great '50s-'70s "classic" period and the '90s-now "contemporary" period, it Sadly, in terms of "80s black music", most people focus on early hip-hop and those few crossovers that I've mentioned, and of course the MTV pop/rock still popular for people generally of a certain age. It was already seen as "bygone" as early as the late '90s, with its "quiet storm" dominated feel with early synths and drum machines that led to its rather dated feel, no matter how many traditional instruments were used, and a lot of soap opera cues and love themes of the '80s/'90s incorporated this style of music. We've still got Mr. McDonald, Jeffrey Osbourne, Peabo Bryson, George Benson, and many more from that era with us.
RIP Mr. Ingram (no relation to Luther who passed on in 2007).

Ouch. My aunt loves Y&R.
-
This one hurts. If there were three-four men that defined The Young and the Restless for most of its existence, it was Eric Braeden, Peter Bergman, Doug Davidson and Kristoff St. John. Doug was knocked to recurring status by a really poor producer in Mal Young (he's gone, so hopefully that gets fixed). Young nearly knocked out Braeden completely in the same way. Now, Kristoff takes his own life.
He's been hurting since his son Julian St. John took his life in 2014 after years of mental illness. It is painful to lose a son before you die because we're programmed so that our kids will outlive us. It is unfortunate that it came to this. His character of Neil Winters was one that transcended generations and he did a wonderful job in any situation on that show.
May he rest in peace and hopefully the brass at Y&TR never recast the role.

The name itself won't probably mean anything much, but I cannot pass this one up. This man, along with Bob Barker, was my first TV idol when I was a child.
Réal Giguère, mult-talented television personality, died today at age 85. To game show fans, he is best remembered for hosting the French-Canadian version of Jeopardy! (called Jéopardy, with an accent e and without the exclamation point) from 1991 to 1993 on TVA. In the french-speaking province of Canada, Réal did everything for the media that he was nicknamed "Mr. Television" and "Mr. Canal 10", the original channel name of the O&O and flagship station of TVA, CFTM, in Montréal. He was called so because his lifetime career was devoted to the network.
From humble beggenings in radio, he started doing local TV by hosting bowling shows. It wasn't long after network TVA's launch in 1961 that was hired. He said that in his 40 years of service, he did 26 shows. In the game show field prior to Jéopardy, he was also popular for hosting Galaxie in the 1980s, a capture-a-star format show very similar to Battlestars.
He did almost every other type of show imaginable, including creating and writing a prime time television drama called L'or du temps (The Golden Age), hosting numerous talk shows (among them are Parle Parle, Jase Jase (lit. Talk talk, chat chat)).
I was fortunate to have a chat with Jéopardy announcer Pierre Derek, who stated that Réal was great to work it. He had his trademark laugh that was parodied eveywhere on TV. He was also a perfectionist, he put so much energy to his quality of work. He also started that Jeopardy was his favorite game show he hosted, and the reason it lasted only two years was because of a liscensing disagreement between TVA and Merv Griffin Productions; the show was a ratings it when it was cancelled. In fact, even 25 years after being off the air, people in the province still associates Jeopardy with Réal.
Réal was also very protective of his private life. He was like Johnny Carson. After he retired, he was completly out of showbusiness and people though he was dead for many years. Only in a TVA Special celebrating its 50 years on the air that Réal allowed an interview.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Television.

David Horowitz was so dedicated to consumer protection that he even penned a book titled "Don't Get Ripped Off." I used to enjoy watching his show Fight Back! in the late 80s and watching him perform tests to advertising claims like putting luggage in a cage of lions at a zoo or dipping a chandelier in cake batter to test a dish soap's claim. RIP David Horowitz and thank you for protecting us consumers from deceptive advertising claims and defective products.

Automotive tycoon Lee Iacocca, a legend at both Ford and Chrysler, has passed on at 94.
With his passing, is there a list that could be made of episodes where a couple of his product ideas -- the Dodge Aries/Plymouth Reliant, and the Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager -- were offered as game show prizes?
Ones that immediately come to mind:
• 1981: "Face the Music," where both the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant sedans went to five-day champions.
• 1985: "The Price Is Right," where the station wagon models of the Dodge Aries was offered as a prize. There are several clips on YouTube, including one of the nighttime (Kennedy-hosted) TPiR where a contestant wins a $12,139 wagon in Range Game, and a June 1985 daytime show featuring the car in the short-lived "On the Nose" game.
• 1987-1988: "High Rollers" offered the prize both in mini-games and (briefly) as a five-day prize.
I'm sure many of Iacocca's other cars, both at Ford and Chrysler, that he had a direct hand in developing were prizes through the years. And the winners of said cars had many happy miles and thanks to the man who helped really give Ford many better ideas and saved Chrysler.
RIP.
Brian

Taylor's other credits include Huey, Dewey, and Louie in Duck Tales and Strawberry Shortcake in the character's early 80s specials; I myself liked her take as Paas's Lollichop the lamb in the Easter special Peter and the Magic Egg

Two passages to report today--one that I didn't not know about until last night.
First up, actor Danny Aiello (known for roles in films like "Moonstruck" and "Do the Right Thing") has passed away at age 86.

And a passing from back in March that I didn't know about until last night.
Japanese chef Masahiko Kobe, who served as the Iron Chef Italian on the original "Iron Chef" series from his debut in 1997 to the end of the series two years later, passed away from injuries from a fall at the age of 49 back on March 14th, 2019. Unfortunately, the only obituary I could find was a Japanese one (https://www.nikkansports.com/m/entertainment/news/201903190000519_m.html).

Speaking of delayed announcements....it was reported that pro wrestling legend and later WWF road agent after his in-ring career ended, Rene Goulet (no relation to singer Robert Goulet BTW), passed away back in May at the age of 86. His family had chosen to keep it quiet up to now. No cause of death was given.

On that note, now seems the perfect time to pay tribute to another earlier passing that slipped under my radar previously: longtime Rankin/Bass composer Maury Laws passed on March 28th at 95, so whenever you watch an R/B special for the rest of this year's holiday season, keep him in your thoughts, as his music for each special in no small part helped make them great
