Title: What single game would you like to see make a return?
Post by: Drew72 on July 22, 2019, 01:21:24 AM
We saw the return of "Time is Money" several years back, and whether you fully like the game or not, I think most agree that it's an improved version of the first incarnation.

For me, I would like to see Super Ball return for season 48.  I always thought it was a sort of a variant of Master Key that involved some physical skill to pull it off successfully.  It was probably retired because of the skill needed, but Hole in One (or Two) is still going and it requires physical coordination.

What retired game would you like to see make a return to TPIR?

I thought it was retired because of how much airtime it ate up when it was played.

I know, at least based on some comments I've seen before, that I'm probably in the minority, but my vote goes to Step Up. To me, it was a good test of pricing and had the right amount of risk involved given it's maximum possible payouts. I know it was not won, or played, very often, but I always enjoyed seeing it make an appearance. The set also looked pretty cool to me, with the steps, the colors, the lights, and the money ladder display.

I’d like Hurdles and Give or Keep. The latter would’ve been brought back in Season 38 had Dob not been fired.

I'm an advocate for Penny Ante, but reborn as a SP game instead of a GP game. That way, we can get an SP quickie, a gap a game like Vend-o-Price was meant to fill.

Other than that, I kind of want Buy or Sell or Make Your Mark back, so we have another quicker 3P/4P game we can add into the mix.

Bump would probably get my vote; nice and quick, no real changes other than cosmetics or possibly sound effects needed, and if handled properly, Drew could have some fun with the actual bus bumping.

Bump gets my vote. Perhaps update it to use bumper cars instead of busses?

Honorable Mentions:
SuperBall!!! (as a casher)
Penny Ante (digital readout circles instead of flaps, same old sound effect)
Hurdles (William Tell’s and all)
Split Decision (touch screens that are wiped after each attempt)
Barkers Markers/Make Your Mark (three prizes, fourth amount on board replaces the $500 in cash)

All games with great concepts!

Poker Game. Definitely works with four digit prizes. Add a cash bonus for five of a kind win.

Honorable mentions: Penny Ante, Give or Keep, $uper Saver, Hurdles, Add Em Up, Barker's Marker's, Split Decision and Bump.

My vote however, easily goes to Buy or Sell. Perhaps no game in the history of the Price is Right was more Price is Right than Buy or Sell. What could be a better test of smart shopping/pricing skill than buying low and selling high. And that big bank was super cool.

I'd retire that bore fest know as Double Prices and bring any of the games I listed back in its place. But Buy or Sell gets my vote for this question.

Car Pong.

No, seriously.

I love Super Ball but I can’t see it working today with today’s time limits. Car Pong captures the spirit of Super Ball but it’s more accessible, easier to bounce back after a miss, and a reasonable length. Although I’d be very surprised if Mashup Week ever happened again now that Mike’s gone.

Buy or Sell wins it for me.

Honorable Mentions:
Bump
Super Saver
Poker Game  (I agree with Superball but if you win the game you get a cash bonus, not just for 5 of a kind)
Penny Ante
Super Ball (I would like this to come back but it's a time sucker.  Not likely to return.).

I would love to see Super Ball again as well, the prize reveal was exciting and it was a fun game to watch. If they could just do something to shorten its time enough.

Walk of Fame might be fun to see played again too, although Rat Race uses what was its pricing portion now.

I would vote to bring back Give or Keep, but I think they’d have to reveal the small prizes in a different way due to time constraints.  (Granted, a lot of those are no longer sponsored, so maybe that wouldn’t matter as much, but still...)

Poker Game. Definitely works with four digit prizes. Add a cash bonus for five of a kind win.

Even a mix of 3- and 4-digit prizes would also work. The original was basically "six card stud", and of course everyone's heard of Seven Card Stud, and it could easily be stretched out to eight. Yes, there would be "hand inflation", meaning more four and five of a kind's, but that would help the charm of the strategy, for example having a full house would be a tougher decision to stay compared to the actual game. Just use a video monitor instead of that old board, which I agree was too tacky by the end of its run.

With regards to Super Ball!, I would just make it a casher to save time. Have the hole values increase to $100, $500, and $5000 for the WIN, with a maximum of $30,000 possible. Alternatively, I would make it a timed game like Car Pong and have the SPs add five seconds for each roll (with five seconds given for free), followed by the Super Ball! portion of the game, which is just played like normal, but perhaps for a bigger prize like a car.

Bring back Give or Keep but instead of using small products play it with grocery items.  They could be displayed on a table like other games or use the old Joker game "carousel."

My honest opinion? Double Digits. It was a good game that made clever use of pricing. The colors weren't good, but that can be changed.

Also I would be open to...
-Phone Home Game, but with just one person.  The idea of two people doesn't work with the standard one-person format that's usually used. Think of it as Pick-a-Pair for cash.
-Superball! because I love Skee-ball, and the set was cool as well.

And yes, I'd love to see Car Pong as well.

No, seriously. :P

What purpose, then, would the phone serve in this format if there'd be no one to talk to on the other end?

Phone Home Game or something like it could be interesting to play via Skype. Maybe they'd have a celebrity play with the contestant so the on-stage contestant gets the full prize instead of splitting it with a random person.

Bring back Give or Keep but instead of using small products play it with grocery items.  They could be displayed on a table like other games or use the old Joker game "carousel."
I could see a game using Give or Keep's rules played with groceries rather than small prizes.

Bullseye '72, of course.  :-D ...With the $500 range. I'm not heartless.  :P You could re-name it Dialed In, or something like that.  :-)

...Oh, and how was the original Time is Money / It's Time to Stop worse than the current iteration? I honestly can't imagine that being possible. :P

Even though I personally like the newer version more, I did like the original UNTIL they changed the rules and made the name completely pointless. :-)

I think that Penny Ante would be the one game I would have brought back, on the condition the original set is used/remade. It would be perfect time wise, and it's a good test of pricing knowledge. Mystery Price would be another good choice to me, with a few gameplay changes (make the prize package similar to Safe Crackers with the smaller prize being the mystery prize, go from 4 small prizes to 3).

On a bit of a tangent, I think that Gold Rush from the TPIR/LMAD mashup week would be a great quick car game. IMO, if they just had reveals for where the digits went as they were picked, it would already be better than Gridlock.

PLEASE spare us any further celebrity tie-ins to the regular daytime show. A "random person" might not be famous, but they're what I tuned into the show to see--ordinary people like me participating.

Maybe one of the models.

So somebody who works for the show is going to be directly responsible for how much money the contestant can potentially win? S&P issues aside (and I’m sure there’s a mountain), that’s a PR disaster waiting to happen.

Even in the 80’s Phone Home Game was a very “out there” idea. It worked, against all odds, but the novelty value is missing in an era where anybody can easily interact with the show on social media or win stuff on the website.

^I mean, we had The Home Phone Plinko on the Superfan show, so it technically is a possibility, but unless the game is a once-per-season game, I'm almost sure that there would be some type of technical difficulty.

It doesn't have to be called Phone Home Game. The game could simply be renamed, as in Make your Mark.

Without hesitation...

Hurdles
Bump
Give or Keep
Super Ball!!
Poker Game
Credit Card (if it's not already been reintroduced)
Penny Ante (with the original rules)
Poker Game
The Phone Home Game
On The Spot (the name for a different game, just like Ballance Game II)

Super Saver for sure, partially due to it's unjust retirement. Special shoutouts to Buy or Sell, Step Up and Split Decision. Super Ball!! would be so nice to have back but I don't think it would work in this day and age with too many time constraints.

Okay, so aside from the fact that you listed 10 times the number of games that the title asked for (which was freaking one)...

On The Spot (the name for a different game, just like Ballance Game II)

...what in the stupid hell does this mean?

Not to mention how would “original rules” Penny Ante work in 2019?

“He guesses the gravy mix is $1.09, and he is...”

*wubba wubba wubba*

“...wrong, and with 109 pennies, the game is over on the first pick. Sorry. Stay tuned for more Price is Right, don’t go away!”

Super Saver for sure, partially due to it's unjust retirement.

For similar reasons, I'd like to see Make Your Mark return.

Then again, had Super Saver actually been retired due to technical difficulties as was long rumored, I'd still love to see it return.

This question about what pricing game we would like to see return is just like asking a parent who their favorite child is. And though this question is rather hard to decide between three games on my list I would love to see return, I'm going with those who want to see Give Or Keep return.

Definitely avoid that!
If that were the case, I'd adjust the 100 penny limit to 500 pennies or higher for inflation. I only thought the original rule was good because I thought it provided a wider window of opportunity to win or lose, compared to the latter rules. But that's just me.

That's the goal. It's not supposed to be easy. Anybody can come up with a long list of 10 games. It doesn't take any thought to do that. By forcing people to pick ONE, they have to weigh the pros and cons and make hard decisions.

but if it makes everyone happy, give us Hurdles...

Your reasoning is "other people care about it"? I think the more interesting question is "what do YOU care about"? Anybody can follow the majority opinion but it doesn't take much critical thinking skills or make a very interesting discussion. If you have a unique reason for wanting a game back I'd love to hear it.

I think Buy or Sell would work best for a revival. The show lacks three-prizers, it takes relatively little time to play, and it offers cash as well to offset the potentially lower-end offerings.

Super Ball.  To make the game go quicker, have cash amounts for Door #1 and #2 (less copy to read), and if you get one of the 3 smaller prizes right, you automatically earn the Super Ball (eliminates 4th SP which was mostly a gimme anyway).  Wonder if Drew enjoys Skeeball; that is a big factor for any chance of a reboot.  We can only dream.
