Title: The $100,000 Pyramid with Michael Strahan - Season Three
Post by: GameShowKid on June 10, 2018, 10:19:24 PM
We're back for another season of one of my favorite game shows and a classic. I've just finished watching the season premiere and there aren't many changes compared to last year. The main game trilons are now rotated one at a time to reveal each subject and for some reason the Winner's Circle directions ("Give a list", "Don't use your hands", etc.) weren't broadcast, but these are minor differences.

Excellent and extremely high-energy gameplay to start off the new season. Perfect 21-21 first round and so close in the first Winner's Circle round. There was a nice $50K win in the second half of the first full game.

In the second half-hour contestant Camille, a very good and intelligent player, tried for $50K and later $100K. She ended up with $12K total.

As for some of the subjects, it took me a little time to come up with "Copperfield" and "Brinkley" for "Famous Men Named David", but "Duchovny" was an excellent clue. I would have said "a dull pencil" right away for "Things You Sharpen", but not much time was spent on that anyway. "UPS (trucks)" was great for "Things That Are Brown"; I thought of "Michael Strahan's skin". "A peach" came to mind immediately for "Things That Have Pits"; I'm a bit surprised the contestant didn't say it (he didn't need to :) )

Good to see the show return; I hope to watch every episode this season.

I would have also said Mr. Letterman for "Men named David". I also would have said a UPS uniform for "Brown". For "pull", I would have said a bad tooth. I never would have thought of underarms, because I thought underarm and pit were synonyms. Hopefully there will be a $100,000 win next week.

For "Things You Pull" I would've said a muscle, a hamstring, an all-nighter in addition to hair.

Very nice. I especially like the all-nighter clue.

Would 90210...hangout...Peach...Mine... work as clues for pit as well

The subject was "Things That Have Pits"; one has to give a list of things that fit the subject. Clues like "90210" and "hangout" wouldn't be allowed. This is Pyramid, not the Alphabetics round from Password Plus. :)  (Hmmm... I don't even think one could get away with "90210" as a clue there either).

You can't. In Password, each number counts as a word. "Nine oh two one oh" would definitely be illegal.

The only exception to that would be if the subject is "Zip Codes," which has happened at least once before:

I attended a taping session on May 5th. I am not sure if the games I saw will be in the same hour or split between two different episodes. The second game had a gameplay first for the current era of Pyramid, and there was a stopdown to decide how to proceed. When the episode airs, I will share the details and give my thoughts.

Well, technically you could get away with it if you left a distinct pause between each digit, but by that point you've spent so much time going off on a ridiculous tangent that you've already lost anyway.

("Peach... seed" would almost certainly be all you need for Password, anyway)

It was awesome to see the first $150,000 win of the season. There was hesitation on the winning category, "Jazz Musicians" (or something similar), but Anthony Anderson, despite his lack of confidence, helped the contestant win. If only we can have someone max out their winnings by winning the cash plus the Mystery 7 trip...

We also had a gameplay first in the current era of Pyramid: Jennifer Lewis' team could not catch up to Anthony Anderson's team after their three rounds of play. They scored 9 after their three rounds to Anthony Anderson's team's 10, which was scored in two rounds, so Anthony's team won by default. Granted, it wasn't the best game when Jennifer's team got 2 on their first round, three on their second, and the ESP wasn't strong between the contestant and celebrity.

In the second half...

Is Ask Jeeves still a thing? Kevin James went to that instead of the correct answer of "Wikipedia" when his contestant partner described the "fake Google" site where you look up information.

I'm surprised "Things in a High School" was won with only "School." I suppose that's the essence of the category, but I would think the judges would wait for the key word/phrase before sounding the bell.

The last Winner's Circle was heartbreaking. The sixth subject, "Things That are Tough," was a trap; one would have to stay focused and say "Leather," "A wrestler," "Nails," or another suitable object and hope their partner says "Tough."

For "Skunk", I thought of "My name is Pepe Le Pew, and I stink."
For "Spin", I had Wheel of Fortune, The Price Is Right wheel, and a top.
For "Jazz", I was thinking Ella Fitzgerald, and Harry Connick Jr.
And for "tough", I had shoe leather, a decision, and an overcooked steak.

Congratulations to Luigi. He came up with some very good clues under pressure, such as "rainforest" (excellent) , "dreidel", "Coltrane", and "Wakanda". :)

I'm surprised "Things in a High School" was won with only "School." I suppose that's the essence of the category, but I would think the judges would wait for the key word/phrase before sounding the bell.
If I was the judge, I wouldn't have accepted it. Why even include the word "high" in the subject if one is going to accept just "school"?

That 10-9 score was the lowest I've seen in this incarnation of Pyramid.

Those are some great clues.  My sister thought of "Sears kids jeans" for that last subject, hoping that the receiver would think of Toughskins. And I can clearly hear Dick Clark saying "HIS script", "HIS props", "HIS coach" etc. for "Things An Actor Uses".

That second winners circle in the Joy Behar/Kevin Smith episode was devastating.  I didn't think they wanted the $100,000 extra won because two of those categories were traps waiting to be sprung...BATHROOM was one trap, the other was the last one (TOUGH) due to the synonyms.  There were way too many synonyms for TOUGH.

That would be Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Mallrats. Kevin James starred in King of Queens.

On the June 24th episode: One $50K win (first half-hour) and one $100K win (second half-hour) tonight. I thought the subjects in the first win were particularly easy; "Things That Are Sweet" at the top? I thought of "wax" and "wrapping" for "Types of Paper". The judge(s) accepted Snoop's "Things on Paper" for that one, and I think the host influenced that decision. Hmmm... I'm shaking my head a little bit on that one.

I also came up with "skis" (along with other clues) for "Sports Equipment", and "toll" for "Types of Booths". (Kudos to the contestant for saying "phone" and "voting".) This was the same contestant who said "Lance Armstrong" for "Famous Astronauts" and couldn't think of any other clues. That probably cost her the $50K win.

There were a few other brain freezes during the hour, including "Beyonce" and "rabies". And I personally thought all of the Questlove related subject titles during the second main game were overkill.

On the $100,000 attempt in the second half hour, I studied the middle tier carefully.  BOTH Things at a MAGIC SHOW and People at an AIRPORT were trap categories.  The wrong giver would easily fall for those traps.  TYPES of BOOTHS was also a killer too.  Besides PHONE, VOTING, and I heard TOLL from one of our own here, I thought KISSING for TYPES of BOOTHS.

Yep, those take careful thought. I thought of “the wand” for that first subject, and “the baggage handlers” for the second.

On the Stu's Show program today, apparently in one session eight times when contestants gave out clues, those had to be bleeped out. They say it is moving the direction of where Family Feud is going.

I don't know how true it is they're moving to a, well, more raunchy direction.

That said, I think I've said here before that bleeping an answer was very rare on the original "Pyramid." Maxene Fabe's book "The Game Show Book" did state one known instance, where Sandy Duncan was bleeped for a clue she gave for "Things That Are Stiff." (Use your imagination.)

(Sandy, BTW, was also known to have been the lone clue giver to break the straps to hold your hands during the WC gameplay, so as to discourage/stop hand-gesturing.)

I can't wait to see how the final product appears on TV. I don't know when the first game I saw in my taping session will air.

On the July 8th episode: Interesting thing happened this evening. During the first half-hour a team picked the Mystery 7 subject last and needed 5 points to tie, 6 to win the game, and 7 to win the trip. The same scoring situation occurred during the second half-hour. In both cases, the trip was won.

I had a problem with the very first Winner's Circle round, in which the $50K was won, but it became less of a problem for me upon rewatching. The judge(s) accepted "Things That Start with "B"" for "Sports That Start with "B", and I thought, "Why even include the word "Sports" if you are going to accept "Things"? I later saw that the celebrity player actually did say "Sports That Begin with B" after the ding of acceptance was heard. Still, I personally would not take "Things".

The second Winner's Circle round subjects (for $100K) proved more challenging. I thought of "the large audience", and "the tickets" for "Things at a Concert". I threw in "apples" and "tomatoes" for "Red Fruits (Foods)". I came up with "wedding" and "engagement" for "Types of Rings". "Things with Stripes" seemed a bit easier, but the team ran out of time.

I was surprised the male contestant in the second half-hour didn't say "electricity" or "static electricity" (Strahan's clue) for "Things That Shock You". He got stuck on unexpected events.

Hmmm... I suppose someone could say “Christmas golden” with the hope the receiver would understand the reference; I don’t think singing the clue would be allowed. :)

Tough subjects that round. Dick Clark often said “Get a picture”; I think that would have helped with “Red Fruits (Foods)”, at least.

From this week’s episode there was a thoroughly unnecessary item for things that follow other things. They didn’t really need to go there.

The perfect clue for "murder, "_____, She Wrote."
November: "I'm the month Thanksgiving is in."
I totally did not expect Danielle to win the game and win $150,000.
$169,000 was won tonight. That's good.

On the July 15th episode: Here's something I don't remember seeing before in this version of Pyramid. The same Mystery 7 trip destination was offered in both the first and second half-hours. I also noticed that the main game subject titles were not revealed one by one as done earlier this season.

Concerning some of the Winner's Circle subjects: Good idea from Strahan to add "Mr" to "Travolta" for "Men named John"; under pressure I could only come up with "Kennedy" and "Brown". I too thought of "A movie theater" for "Things You Sneak Into", but I probably would have whispered the clue. Great clues for "Things You Cuddle (Snuggle)", but the word just didn't come to mind apparently. Perhaps the contestant should have also said "your girlfriend" or something to that effect.

Danielle was an excellent Pyramid player. Very clever saying "the exit one", "the entrance one", and "the sliding one" for "Types of Doors". Adding "hot" to "ice cream" for "Things That Melt" was smart. She also played the main game really well.

I thought her two Winner's Circle round subjects were pretty easy overall, especially those for $50K. She blasted through those. I'm also glad she didn't say "I'm the month after October"; I would have avoided that also for the possibility of being buzzed.

On the July 22nd episode: If I had to choose one word to describe today's show, it would be "loud". I would even say "extremely so" compared to the Clark and Cullen versions. To be honest, I began to grow irritated with Donovan's behavior during his second main game round. Congratulations to him though on becoming another $150,000 winner.

I found his subjects for $100K pretty easy overall though ("Famous Jacksons" for $3000??). And kudos to Bobby Moynihan for getting "Things That Are Dark" with just one clue: "Space". I thought of "healthy chocolate" for that one.

Nina (from the second half-hour) was a very good player. Fantastic clues for "Types of Cups". She also gave my clue for "Things That Burst" (my/your "bubble" - "frozen pipes" from Strahan was excellent). And as a judge I would not have taken just "Cities" for "U.S. Ciites".

And back to the main game: How was a clue of "not two hundred" acceptable for "300"?? ("Hundred" is part of the answer!)

Super Bowl: Halftime Show, The MVP, The Championship Trophy.
Yoga: The Lotus position, mats, music.
Hair: shampoo, conditioner, rollers, curling iron.
Rake: I'm the tool you use to gather leaves on the ground.
Burst: Bubble, frozen pipes, appendix.

$169,500 won tonight. That's great.
I wonder how much caffeine did Donovan consume that day.

BUZZ!! (I would say). Break is a synonym for burst, and a broken dam has already burst. However, I think that last clue is an excellent one for "Things That Are Dark".

Yeah, I don’t like the inconsistent judging. Note my previous comment on “hundred”, and the acceptance of “Things in a School” for “Things in a High School” & “Things on Paper” for “Types of Paper”. However, earlier this season a contestant in the Winner’s Circle was buzzed for saying “hard leather” (“Things That Are Tough” - synonym rule).

On the July 29th episode: Starting with the second half-hour last main game: I didn't agree with the Mystery 7 decision in that 14-6 situation. I think the trailing team should have had a chance to pick the next-to-last subject as usual. If it was the Mystery 7, they should have played for the trip. If it wasn't they should have forfeited gameplay and let the other team play for the trip.

One of the celebrities asked if the 14 seconds it took to get all 7 answers in the main game was a record. Strahan said "no". Now I'm wondering what the record actually is.

I also had a question about the main game subject on last names (SNL hosts). The singular was accepted (example: "comb" for "Combs"), but should it have been?

Concerning some of the Winner's Circle subjects: I'm not sure if either would have been accepted, but how about "a loud wooden floor" or "a noisy wooden floor" for "Things That Creak"? How about "Chubby Checker's hips" for "Things With a Twist? And, following from the contestant's clue, how about "The Working Seven Dwarves" for "Things That Whistle"?

I wouldn't have known right away what else to say if my teammate didn't get "Things You Scratch" after one clue: "an itch".

Nice $100K win the first half-hour. I thought that particular pyramid of subjects was fairly easy. I'm a bit old-school; I would have said "The Ralston-Purina Square" for "Things That Are Checkered". :)  (Remember that?) Another clue: "A criminal's past".

Tonight's first half was painful to watch. There was a combination of miscommunication from the clue-givers and the clue-receivers, and there were moments where you were shouting what would have been perfect clues at the TV. At least a $100,000 win at the end redeemed this half.

Now, onto the second half, which I saw in person on May 5, 2018.

Seeing the Pyramid set up close was really neat. It looks a bit smaller than it does on TV, but you really see how intricate it is-especially the trilons in motion. I was seated in the back of the left-hand side of the audience, below the hollowed-out trapezoid that the camera zooms into when coming back from commercial for the second half. The audience warm-up person kept us engaged, and he pointed out the staffers (notably game producer John Ricci, Jr.), and as it turns out, Miley Cyrus was a guest in the audience. I did not recognize her as we were being cattled into the studio, but it was neat to see her in person (my sister was a huge Hannah Montana fan in the previous decade).

The gameplay was pretty solid from the contestants in the front half, and I was amazed at how quickly 7 words were conveyed in one of the subjects (though, it was pretty easy when they refer to parts of the body, the clue-giver can use his/her body quite effectively in that subject). The Winner's Circle was painful-as soon as they got down to "Things You Scratch," I was hunched down in my chair, fingers crossed, and the entire audience let out a big "Awww" when they couldn't clear that last subject.

Things got more interesting in the second half. After it became apparent that a win for one team was impossible because of how far behind the winners they were, and the Mystery 7 was still up for grabs, Michael turned to the cameras and asked what to do next. This lead to a 20-minute stopdown, in which the producers and staffers went to the contestants and celebrities to discuss what to do. All the while, the audience warm-up asked us if this happened before. I raised my hand and said it did happen back in 1987 on The $25,000 Pyramid, referring to this moment below:

In this moment, the losing contestant is given the chance to find the Mystery 7. Thankfully, she does and wins the prize, but how awkward would it have been if she didn't find it? Before I could describe what happened, the audience warm-up stopped me mid-sentence as he did not want my commentary to affect the outcome of this game. In his words, "The rules may have changed." What was eventually decided was that the winning team would play for the Mystery 7, as a bonus. Thankfully, they won the trip.

As I was exiting the studio, I was next to the producers who were discussing this matter. One of them thought the rule was that if the Mystery 7 was still in play, the losing team would still have a chance to play for it (as shown in the clip above). However, they decided it would be better television to give the winning team the chance to win the Mystery 7 as a bonus for their better gameplay. I agree with their approach because of the awkward scenario that might happen if the losing team doesn't find the Mystery 7-they already lost the game, and it would add insult to injury if they could not find the Mystery 7, let alone win it.

I don't know when the first half of my taping session will air. But overall, it was a fun experience. I was the resident superfan in the audience, and I got to play a mock game with the audience warm-up in guessing Winner's Circle subjects. One I couldn't guess was "Things at The $100,000 Pyramid," as I couldn't think on a high level or where I was right at the time. I did leave with a book as a prize for my participation, I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara.

I hope the show gets renewed for a fourth season, and I want to try out for myself.

Glass: Window, Cinderella's shoe, a prosthetic eye.
December: "I'm the month Christmas is in".
Checkered: A car race flag, someone's past, a tablecloth.
Halloween: "I'm the spooky holiday in October".

$124,500 was won tonight. I'm still baffled on how the tiebreaker works.
To give the winning team the chance to play the "Mystery 7", was the WRONG thing to do.

I know it's a matter of opinion, but "better television"???   Remember, Bob Stewart, the creator of the game, was the executive producer in 1987. Shouldn't we follow his precedent?

Anyway, with a score of 14-6, and even with no chance of going to the Winner's Circle, I think the trailing team should have still had the chance to pick the next-to-last subject in hopes of uncovering the Mystery 7. If they did, they could play for the trip. If they won the trip (and I would hope they did), great. A sort-of consolation prize. If they didn't uncover it, the winning team should still have a chance to play for the trip.

I hope the show gets renewed for a fourth season, and I want to try out for myself.
I also considered trying out for next season, but I don't think I will. I read all of the conditions (especially concerning right to sue and editing/altering/modifying of submission materials). I have problems with them.

I thought they would have known what to do based on precedent-even if we know the contestant cannot win, they could try for the Mystery 7 as a consolation prize to salvage the situation, but because this scenario is so rare in the show's history, they had to think and discuss things out in the manner they did. Maybe when they drafted up the rules for this version, they forgot to include a provision for this situation?

I wonder what happened as the producers were continuing to discuss the situation-maybe the contestant will be invited back to play again or they will give her the trip, if they felt that it wasn't fair to deny her the chance to find the Mystery 7?

That "dam" clue was the first thing I thought of seeing the beaver subject. And may I suggest modifications: How about "Cinderella's slipper"? "A car race's finishing flag"? :)

Moreover, I'm with you concerning the "Mystery 7".

*nods* A decision had to be made, and I didn't know the actual precedent shown until seeing the video you embedded. I just thought it made more sense to me to give the trailing team the opportunity to at least pick first since 1) that follows the usual rule, and 2) it gives the chance for a major "consolation" prize.

I was thinking the losing team should have gotten a chance to play for the Mystery 7, although goldenroadfanatic gave a good explanation for just giving the winning team the chance to play it. Perhaps they could've let the losing team choose a subject and if it was the Mystery 7 they get to play it, but if it's not then the subject is ignored and the winning team plays the Mystery 7.

Another rationale for automatically giving the winners a chance at the Mystery 7: They already clearly won the game, so they are entitled to the bonus. The fairness of that is debatable, however.

On the August 5th episode: No big wins today. And "necklace" (the last word in the Mystery 7 category) was a trap. Nick Lachey fell right into it.

Now that we know that "A sandwich named Joe" (given by Strahan) is an apparently acceptable clue for "Things That Are Sloppy", we will probably never see that subject again. I wouldn't have tried giving that clue; I thought Jamie's clue of "a meatball sandwich" was excellent. (She was a very good player.) "A quick eater" perhaps?

And "an open chip bag" was fantastic for "Things You Clip".

I threw in "the earth", along with "a pizza" and "a pie" for "Things with a Crust". "Pizza edge" was a better clue. How about "an evil plan" (with others) for "Things That are Hatched"? I took the basketball route with "Types of Shots" (lay-up, slam dunk, free throw), and "Queen Elizabeth" and "Elton John" were my clues for "Famous British People". Also, after "a haunted house" I couldn't think of any other "Scary Places".

Crust: Pizza, A flaky pie, the Earth
Utensils: Spatula, tongs, slotted spoon, potato masher
B cities: Boston, Baltimore, Bismarck
Video games: Sonic, Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, Space Invaders
British: Julie Andrews, Queen Elizabeth, Elton John
Soda: Pepsi, Coca Cola, Sprite, Fanta
Screen: Door, window, movie theater, tv

Only $41,000 was won tonight. Hopefully it will get better next time.

On the August 12th episode: Again, no big wins. And if I remember correctly, Kathy Najimy has yet to make it to the Winner's Circle this season.

"Polyester" was an excellent clue for "Fabrics (Materials)", and I thought the contestant spent way too much time on that subject. I would have passed, probably gotten the $4000 and $5000 subjects pretty easily, and then returned to it. Those subjects, respectively, were: "Things with Holes" (I immediately thought of "swiss cheese", which would have paired nicely with her "a golf course") and "Types of Oil" (I threw "canola" in with her "olive" and "grapeseed".)

Hoping I wouldn't get buzzed, I would have said "What You Preach" for "Things You Practice". I also thought of "your piano skills". How about "a dirt road" and "a teenager's skin" for "Things That Are Bumpy"? And the contestant didn't have much time with it, but I came up with "an expertly built bookcase" for "Sturdy Things".

Yes, brain freeze from Tim Meadows on "What a Margarita Might Say". And one from the contestant, who started off with "Bin Laden" for "People Whose Last Name is Obama". "Things You Pick Up"? How about "the check" and "a dropped hundred dollar bill"? :)

What would you have come up with quickly for "Famous Songs"? The first one that came to my mind was "The Star-Spangled Banner". But what else to say? The pressure!

For Famous Songs, I would've started with "Happy Birthday" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and then said some well-known popular songs like "I Got You Babe" or "I Will Survive." Star Spangled Banner would've been a great clue too GameShowKid.

For Things That Are Bumpy I would've said rough skin, I assume rough wouldn't be buzzed.

Things You Practice- the piano, lines for a play, your scales

Thanks. I didn't have time to think about it during the actual round, but a contestant could just name famous songs by one band, like the Beatles, to get the partner to simply say the word "Songs".

The first half was amazing. We not only had the fourth $150,000 winner of the season, but we finally had a contestant max out the winnings for this version of Pyramid-he won the Mystery 7 trip in the front game to go along with that cash. He is one of the winningest contestants in the show's history, if not the winningest.

The second half of the episode was the first game of my taping session on May 5th.

As I said in my post after the July 29, 2018, episode, seeing the set up close was surreal. It was amazing to see it come alive in person. Also, it was a great treat to see someone win the Winner's Circle in person after watching episodes on television and YouTube for many years. The excitement and joy in the audience when those winning bells sounded was intoxicating.

In the second main game, after one subject was potentially about things in The White House, the audience let out a collective "Ohhhh," Michael turned to the audience and quipped, "Let's see if it is what you think it is," before revealing it was things in an igloo. This was edited out of the broadcast.

Also not mentioned during the taping was the fact that Andy Richter hosted a pilot for a version of the Pyramid in 2010.

As for the second Winner's Circle, the contestant fell into a trap by mentioning "Pizza Hut" for the second subject, which was about pizza restaurants. That was painful to watch. As for the fourth subject, types of light bulbs, during the taping, I was puzzled as to why the judges buzzed "LED"for that subject. I recalled this clip from the original version of The $100,000 Pyramid, where "UCLA" and "USC" were given for "Names of Colleges (University)."

The bells and sounded when the last subject was cleared, but Dick stopped the celebration because he thought those clues for the first subject should have been ruled illegal. During the break, the judges informed him that in the Winner's Circle, such clues are acceptable because they specifically asked for names of colleges and universities, while in the front game, those clues would be illegal. Happily, the contestant won $10,000. Also, perhaps because "universities" was in parentheses, it acted as a "close enough" guess to credit the contestant with the money, rather than the subject itself, so Terry Lester (the celebrity) was within his rights to use those clues.

I suppose that because, as Michael said, LED stands for "Light Emitting Diode," light is part of the answer, so they had to disqualify the contestant. Still, $62,000 plus the Mystery 7 trip is a good day's work.

Overall, the taping experience was fun (handling of the Mystery 7 in the second half notwithstanding, as that is debatable now that I think about it). I hope to be a contestant or attend another taping next season.

The first three Winner's Circles were very very easy, especially the first one. The last one of the night had the traps of Pizza Hut for Pizza Restaurants and LED or anything else with the word light in it for Types of Light Bulbs. I would've said incandescent, energy efficient, and flood for light bulbs.

Couldn't agree with you more. And in my book, accepting "Things in Europe" for "European Cities" made things easier.

For "Types of Closets" I could only think of "walk-in" and "clothes". Hopefully those two clues would be enough. :)

Did you hear what Andy Richter said after the maingame subject "Achieving Wordgasm" was read? I wish I could thank him personally for saying "Always dirty.", even if he was joking. And to use "Getting The Clap" as the title for "People who might work on a stage" was lowbrow, tasteless, and very cheap attempt at humor.

On the August 26th episode: Since the second half-hour is a repeat, I’ll go ahead and make a few comments about the first half-hour, which featured EGOT winner Rita Moreno. I didn’t realize how many times she has appeared on different versions of the show: 110, according to Strahan, including tonight. Later, Ms. Moreno was asked if the show had changed a bit since her last visit.

“Oh yeah”. Even the 1982 clip shown was literally about “Sex”. I also noticed how the players commented at times on how “dirty” the show has become. Sigh &.

Chris was a good contestant, who came up with some great clues quickly under the pressure of time. For examples, “Oreo cookies” and “dry cookies” for “Things You Dunk”, and “a see-saw” and “a yo-yo” for “Things That Go Up and Down”. I came up with “a basketball” for the former and “an elevator” for the latter.

How about an excellent clue for “Circular Things”? Something to go along with “a ball”, “the sun”, and “a sphere”? (After taking too much time to think: Perhaps “The Lion King’s life”?)

Beer: Miller, Budweiser, Michelob.
Egypt: Pyramids, Cairo, The Sphinx.
Wedding: Bride, Groom, Cake, Reception.
Circular: Ball, Sun, Meatball, Cookie.

I wish they had shown the clip of Rita winning the $25,000 from her 1st week in 1982.
Only $24,000 was won in that game.
Justine had her "Duh" moment when Michael said "Things you dunk".
How much money was won this season? Must be close to $1,000,000 or over.

That number seems a bit high to me, so let's do some fact-checking...
April 30 to May 4, 1973 (there's 5 appearances)
December 4 to 7/December 10, 1973 (brings us up to 10)
January 7 to 11, 1974 (15)
March 13 to 15/March 18 to 19, 1974 (20)
July 29 to August 2, 1974 (25)
[two appearances in the 1974-1975 season of The $25,000 Pyramid, bringing the count to 27]
February 17 to 21, 1975 (32)
[two appearances in the 1975-1976 season of The $25,000 Pyramid, bringing the count to 34]
August 11 to 15, 1975 (39)
January 26 to 30, 1976 (44)
May 31 to June 4, 1976 (49)
[two appearances in the 1976-1977 season of The $25,000 Pyramid, bringing the count to 51]
January 31 to February 4, 1977 (56)
[two appearances in the 1977-1978 season of The $25,000 Pyramid, bringing the count to 58]
October 24 to 28, 1977 (63)
September 4 to 8, 1978 (68)
November 13 to 17, 1978 (73)
February 23 to 27, 1981 (78)
November 29 to December 3, 1982 (83)
March 21 to 25, 1983 (88)
October 3 to 7, 1983 (93)
January 3 to 6, 1984 (97; only 4 shows that week)
May 28 to June 1, 1984 (102)
August 11 to 15, 1986 ($100K) (107)
September 1 to 5, 1986 ($25K) (112)
April 1 to 5, 1991 (117)

And this isn't even including the possibility of her having been on the 2002-2004 or 2012 versions.

OK, turns out they actually lowballed the number. Color me surprised.

When Rita got stuck on the synonymous "round" I was considering if it would be legal to get a bit cheeky and give "its diameter, its radius" as clues.  (A quick check of the Merriam-Webster website confirms that "of or relating to a circle or its mathematical properties" is another definition of "circular" which leads me to think it would be acceptable)

Also... "An electric saw"  :-D

But those things are parts of a circle, not circular things.  I doubt they'd buzz you for it, but that's not exactly a list of things that fit the subject.  I would have said a hula hoop, a hub cap, a record, a compact disc (the electric saw blade would be good), things like that.  I don't know that I'd consider a ball, or the sun "circular", so if I was guessing, I'd keep saying "things that are round" rather than "circular".

On the September 16th episode: I am still reeling from that last Winner's Circle round for $100K. After giving a synonym during his $50K try ("a hopscotch board" for "Things You Jump") the contestant returned after a 19-19 main game tie to play for the $100K. Much time (relatively speaking) was spent on "What a Drone Might Say", and that proved costly. He passed on "People with Middle Initials", successfully used a clue of "shapes" for "Things That Are Square" ("Wow" from me), and then came back to the "Initial" subject. So close, but not a win.

I thought of "Harry S. Truman" and "J.K. Rowling" for that one. "Michael J. Fox" from Strahan might have been the winning clue. I felt bad for the contestant after his $50K mistake and after hearing that he'd practiced for so long and with so many people. He did win $24K though.

For "Things That Are Square", I thought of "a peg" and "a packaged cheese slice". "Skinny jeans" and "a high wire" were fantastic clues for "Things That Are Tight", as was Strahan's "a cigar room" for "Places with Smoke". Taking a hint from previous contestants, I would have said "grocery ones", "shopping ones", and "under eye ones" for "Types of Bags".

Is there someone on the staff that advises the players to "go for the obvious"?

For Places with Smoke, I would've said a burning building and a cigar lounge. The contestant was very creative with "undereye" for Types of Bags, it's too bad she got too descriptive saying "under your eyes." I wonder if just saying plastic, paper, and burlap would've done it for that one.

Great clues there, and when I think of the word "burlap" I do think of "bag" right after that.

By the way, I thought "a double dutch rope" was a superb clue for "Things You Jump". I was surprised the celebrity partner didn't say "jump" right away after that one. Unfortunately the following hopscotch clue cost a good player the full $50K.

On the last two episodes of Season Three: To me, the first hour plainly showed that there's no need to resort to crude humor to attempt to make the show entertaining. Enthusiastic contestants and playfully, competitive celebrities, along with a good host (as Strahan is) and a great, challenging game go a very long way.

Will we have to wait until next summer for the next season? Going by the past record, the answer is, unfortunately, yes.

Any excellent clues for "Foods You Eat With A Spoon"? Jack, a very good player, gave some great ones. How about for "Things That Are Awkward"? I came up with "a weird pause" to go along with "a blind date". Strahan's "your children's accomplishments" and "a leather bomber" were fantastic for "Things That Make You Proud" and "Types of Jackets (Coats)", respectively. Now I'm thinking "a ladies mink" and "a ladies fur".
