What illusions did you have watching price? For me, I always thought the turntable was center stage right behind bob. I always thought 5 price tags was behind door 1. I also always thought that in Hole in One (before it became hole in one or two), when a player missed the putt and it hit the back of the green, it would automatically trigger the losing horns.
-
I think most will agree with this one: I always thought the stage was much larger than it actually is. Especially when Golden Road was played because of how they set up the stage and the camera shots.
-
It was a long time before I realized that only one turntable panel actually spun around, and that there were only two pentagonal panels, for that matter. I think Give or Keep is at least partly responsible for that confusion, in spite of obviously never actually seeing Give or Keep coming around the turntable. I guess my young mind figured it must've spun around regardless, and wasn't able to figure out why we didn't actually get to see it come around.
I thought Pick a Pair was a new game in 1990. While I remembered a game with a ferris wheel that had (as far as I knew) been retired, I didn't actually remember that game being Pick a Pair, so it just seemed like a brand new game to me!
I thought Squeeze Play was just like Double Prices in changing stage positions sometimes. Young me didn't consider reruns.
And of course, the dials in Safe Crackers being magic. Even as I got older, I still couldn't figure out how simple the color-changing illusion actually was. Not until I was an adult did I figure that one out.
-
When I was a kid, I thought the one bid and showcase displays had a voice recognition system. Whatever price contestants would say it would magically appear on the display. When I think about it, everything worked electronically, and when I grew older I realized there were many people working behind the props.
I thought there were more than 3 doors.
I thought the area behind Bob was a different area than home base (turntable). I also thought that the showcase round was played in a totally different place than the turntable area too. Staging and camera angles, I guess. :) I was also scared that everytime someone, wheter be the contestant or Bob, would step on the turntable itself (inside the circled area), the turntable would spin accidentally.
-
I thought Tags and Safe were behind Door #1 as well.
-
I thought contestants were chosen at random.
-
For some reason, I thought contestants bid in the order they came in, not the new person then going right.
-
I thought Tags and Safe were behind Door #1 as well.
I thought so, too. I also thought that 2 for the price of 1 was played behind Door #1 (I thought I saw Bob & the contestants stand in between Door #1 & Door #2 with their backs towards the audience the first several playings of that PG back then).

Definitely.
I was convinced that the big doors were motorized.
-
Are there any games that have been played behind Door #1 (aside from games that use all three doors to show their prizes, like Super Ball or Triple Play)
-
I used to think the show had a live band to perform cues.
-
Somehow I never realized that the showcase round was held on the turntable. Also, I remember watching a showcase with Rod in it with him announcing it at the same time, so I was convinced that there were two Rods. :oldlol:
-
I was actually convinced that Janice and Dian were sisters considering their last names were a bit similar. At least that's what I think. Pennington, Parkinson. I think they're (last names) pretty close. I was a kid then.
-
I remember thinking that the Top Winner and Runner-Up were placed according to their Showcase Showdown score (the Big Wheel amounts, not any bonus cash).
-
I too thought that Safe Crackers and 5 Price Tags were behind Door #1. As a kid I thought there was a live band playing in the studio. I also wondered what happened if someone's named was called and he/she wasn't there.
-
I'll admit that I thought Safe Crackers was an actual safe, and that they were in trouble if the contestant failed to open it during the game and they forgot the combination afterwards. Plus, that the disks in 3 Strikes were gone for good when Bob inserted them in the board's slot, that they were either permanently stuck inside or "went down to China," and they had to create all new ones each time they played the game (same with the Superball balls, figuring they were forever stuck inside the board after thrown, and the Bump cars, which I'd thought went through the floor and under the building). With no visible startup means, I also thought the Range Game rangefinder was voice-activated, that it would rise only if Bob gave the verbal command for it to do so.
-
In Range Game, when Bob would say "Don't press Stop until you want to stop the range finder, because we can't start it again for 24 hours" -- I believed him.
-
I used to think that the car was actually driven out on stage in Lucky $even, i.e. the engine was running at the time.
-
I thought Squeeze Play was introduced in the early-mid 90s, not late 70s, and that 'contestants not appearing on stage' was everybody in the audience that day.
-
For me, I always thought that some cartoon monster would appear on the screen whenever someone made a mistake on Pathfinder. I would commonly turn my head when the player was about to step on the number. I must of had a bad dream the night before. This was when I was about 5 until around the time I was about 11.
I also thought the stage was larger than it was. In fact I thought when I was about 5 that it was 3000 miles long (the driving distance to the studio from my house). Then I thought that the check used in Check Game was actually cashable at the bank, given that Bob would say "That's your actual check."
And for Safe Crackers, I thought that was an office/department store that was on the other side of the safe as opposed to just a background.
Something that's probably been said before: The winner of the Showcase Showdown won their winnings in cash if they didn't spin a dollar, even if it was only a nickel.
-
I also used to think that they were actually riding in an elevator when they'd do the TPiR Department Store showcase. After all, you'd see the arrow moving and a new prize on the floor when the elevator doors opened. Someone mentioned thinking the doors were motorized. I thought that too. I had no concept that stage hands were back there pulling ropes. Similarily, on $25,000 Pyramid I thought the trilons were motorized also.
-

Fairly easy to be mistaken there, since on Concentration the trilons WERE motorized.
-
When I was little, I used to think Hans was real, and I'd start sobbing everytime he went off the cliff. I also used to think that they never did reruns in the summertime.....
-
As a kid, I imagined the stage was about the size of a mall and that all 50 or so active games at that time were set up somewhere on that stage, each in its own designated area.
I also misunderstood the concept of "going over" in the showcase. I thought if Bob said "You're over" to the losing showcase contestant, it meant that their difference was "over" the winning contestant's difference.
-
I always thought that Rod was in a backstage room somewhere when he would do his call down, sort of like the Wizard of Oz, and nobody ever saw him.
-
One more... I thought Most Expensive was just called 1 2 3. :-P

Just where was Rod (or Johnny, for that matter) when they were doing announcements?

Uh, the same place as Rich and George...

Derp... I'd never really checked to see where the podium was in relation to the rest of the stage... just checked the "Announcers" section of the Golden Gallery...
-
Whenever Hole in One was played, I used to think that the ball was being putted down a hallway when watching the right side of the split screen.
-
For some reason, when I was little I thought there was 7 pricing games and the 4th player just didn't get to spin the wheel.
-
There's already a thread about this somewhere - "Misconceptions You Had About The Show" or something like that.
But who cares! This is always a great topic.
I used to think they chose contestants as the show progressed, and as they panned the audience going into a commercial break they would select the one who was doing the most enthusiastic cheering to be the next one to come on down.
