Not a bad show. At least we got a peek at the backstage during Drew's entrance. The showcases weren't great, we probably could have done without the joke about spelling "Caribbean" but I've seen worse.

Why was the audience booing Joan's choice in Squeeze Play?  The 1 looked like the number that least belonged, for crying out loud!  She said she'd been loyally watching for 35 years (inexplicably missing one year, apparently), even taping the show to watch it... I'll buy it :).

You know, Joan said she wanted something "with wheels" in the second showcase.  Thought it would've been interesting if a trailer or a motorcycle showed up, but no, they had to ruin things by offering a pair of jet skis instead.  Would've been cool if something with wheels had shown up instead of the boats.  Either way, if she was disappointed by the lack of a car in the second showcase, you absolutely couldn't tell by her strong reaction to the jet skis.  Which is good :)!

Pathfinder was hard!  I can't believe that was won!  The car was surprisingly cheap, the car had a 5 for a choice for the last number, which was wrong, and the SPs were downright nasty--I have no idea how Brandon got all three of them right!  That was an incredible win!

Pathfinder and Dice Game should have had their cars switched, really.  Dice Game had a car with only a medium-difficult price for that game, while Pathfinder was clearly intended to be lost.  Yet the game that was supposed to be lost had the much cheaper car.  Is it any wonder they are, or at least were, so badly overbudget?

Grand Game felt very classic today, with the unusually cheap groceries used today.  I liked that.  The Klondike bars are apparently no longer $2.99, I guess :).  Even with a bunch of never-before-seen products, it was a very easy playing for anyone who's familiar with most of the products.  I figured the nail polish remover would be cheaper than $3.50 by simple process of elimination.

Balance Game isn't as much fun when it has arthritis.

I see Drew's back to his old glasses again. Four great wins to kick off 2009, and I loved that "Salem! Salem!" chant during the sixth One-Bid, although it's a shame he never got up on stage. That music for the second Showcase sounds eerily familiar, and suddenly, we're flashing back to 1994! Oh well...at least Drew's around for twice as long as Tom Kennedy or Doug Davidson. I rate this first show of the new year two thumbs up, and here's to more of the same until the end of Season 37. I must admit, it did get off to a rocky start, but now it looks like Drew's reverted back to Season 36 form. Let's hope he stays that way.

I see Drew's back to his old glasses again.
Remember...the Christmas week shows taped in early December.  This one was from late October.  So yes, geeky glasses for now (and probably some horrific writing for a while, too).

Grand Game was awesome.  I prefer the smaller range (maybe $4-6)...but $3.50?  Roger, when was the last time the range was this low?

Nicer car in Dice Game than Pathfinder...wowzers.

Lineup wasn't a Roger-esque lineup, but I thought it was definitely a good one.  Weird starting the show with the GP and SP games, though.

I like it, as long as the rest of the lineup doesn't collapse under the weight of the show's starting with an SP and GP in the first two slots.  Today's lineup flowed nicely from that start, anyway.  It helps a lot that Squeeze Play and One Right Price were games 3 and 4, instead of games 5 and 6.

Wow, great show today! Some great contestants too - both in excitement level and intelligence. The excitability level of the contestants kept Drew on his game all day long, and created for lots of great interaction. I remember who most of the contestants were 3 hours after the show, and Drew made me want to root for them with his interaction. Good job!

As for the intelligence level - all I can say is wow, Grand Game and Pathfinder were TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH and the fact they were both won to start the show off built up the excitement for me. Grandy with its extremely low target price and very random GPs meant almost everyone in chat messed it up today, and we all messed it up in different ways - amazed that that managed to be won. Pathfinder was just interesting - there was paint and fabric protection on the car but at the same time last choice 2/5 is cruel - no one's going to get that except an LFAT who heard that there was PFP on the car. SPs were evil too (I went 1/3), though I found it interesting that that was one of the easiest setups for the SECOND number in recent memory: it almost had to be a $16,000 car. Perhaps this was to compensate for the difficulty of the rest of the game.

Solid lineup today, too. You know, if you're going to have back to back quickies, the place to do it is game 3 and game 4 so that the big wheel splits them up, which especially works when the big wheel has a $1,000 winner, like it did today. I was a little worried after GP and SP were taken care of in the first two games, but the rest of that lineup just flowed. Heck, with back to back quickies 3 and 4, they could have even done another quickie 6th if they really needed as long as a reasonably interesting car game was 5th and it still would have been an OK lineup. We got Balance and Dice though, which is even better. Also it was nice seeing the car games not following the 3 pattern (i.e. either 1 or 4, 2 or 5, or 3 or 6 like they have mostly been in recent weeks)

Speaking of Balance, I found it funny how Drew seemed to be hurrying through that game yet the scales were in no hurry at all.

Drew did make one miscue today - he almost forgot to give the contestant her bonus spin; however, he did recover nicely and gracefully.

The Dr-entrance looked cool, at least - we got to see a little bit backstage. The Drewcases kinda sucked, but I'm not gonna pile on too much and just assume they get better in two weeks (remember, these shows were taped before the Christmas week eps.) The presentation on ERITH was extremely lacking, and as for SC2, having a showcase based around contestant interaction is just a bad idea, but at least this contestant seemed  willing to play along, which actually made it a little more fun and less cringeworthy. You can't always count on that, though.

-Grandy: What the, it hasn't been that low in years!
-Pathy: Too many options for even LFaTs to get: 16852, 16845, etc...
-Squeezy: Quiet, audience. Quiet.
-SD1: I MUST DIG!
-ORP: Distance-wise, Napa is a fraction of Sedona. You could kinda of see it though...
-Balance: Tough, what was up with the slow movement? :P
-Dicey: Seemed to be a moderate setup with two 4s. Nice 1 roll.
-SCs: So we have about 10-15 more sets of these? ...Hope I can survive. Really, Caribbean IS spellable.

B+

You've basically proven that I know very little about the average person's shopping habits.  I thought the setup was about as easy as could be.  Maybe I just buy too much foil and ice cream :).

Grand: LOW target. That's the lowest I've seen in years. I didn't think that game was winnable today. I was thinking maybe leave out the soap and nail polish, but she went another way and won.
Pathy: I knew 6 was the second digit. At first I thought 16,845, not paying attention to paint and fabric protection. Then, I said 16,872. These were small prizes I would have struggled with. I'd like to see finishes like that more often.
Squeezy: Not too bad. I probably win there. It feels like we're seeing that camper a lot this season.
1RP: Nice to see this played for two trips. I could have seen it either way.
Balance: Wow, that had to be the quickest playing of this game ever. I think there were 3 legitimate possibilities there.
Dice: Nice to see a car game 6th. We had such little time left, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Range or some quickie for a car. The dice sure rolled in favor of the contestant today.

Other notes:
I wasn't a huge fan of Drew's entrance, but if he wants to make things more colorful without being totally stupid and without completely killing the integrity of the show, then fine.
Overall, Drew did a good job today, but that blunder in SCSD1 was not good. Could have been a 25K mistake and possible legal trouble had he not realized it. I felt like he was mixing up his throws to commercial a little bit today, instead of simply saying, "Don't go away!" every single time.
Good lineup. I may have been inclined to switch Squeezy and Grand, but it worked. Thought a few times throughout the show that we may wind up with a 3-quickie day, but we didn't.
Showcases: Nice to see ERITH, but I know a lot of you had issues with the presentation, and quite frankly, it wasn't great. Anyway, ERITH was right about where I thought it would be for price.
SC2: Well, it's not the worst I've ever seen, but that Drewcase didn't thrill me. The word misspelling theme was lame (if it even had a theme) Surprising to see no car, boat, or trailer in either package today.

I had  bad feeling about today at first, but all in all, not bad.

I found todays show enjoyable overall.  I thought the entrance was silly, but not nearly as bad as in the past.  I liked Grand Game 1st & Pathfinder second....very unexpected.  I actually was expecting the next 4 games to be Double Prices, Pick A Number, Side By Side, & Squeeze Play.  I am really liking his Squeeze Play explanation..."The price is not $86,185, one of thos numbers is wrong....I still miss "the remaining numbers will squeeze together"
The Showcases were ok.  I kind of felt cheated on the reveal on the 1st one.  When the whole Showcase is together behind 1 door it just seems anticlimatic.  I think it would have been better to use other doors & threw in a tv or something.  All in all pretty good.

Pretty good show overall to start the new year off with--keeping in mind that this show was taped earlier than those we saw Christmas week--not bad at all, it surely could have been a lot worse.

The lineup was great--even with Grand Game starting things off--nice to see Squeeze and 1RP 3rd and 4th--made things flow so much better that way. Seeing Balance Game 5th was a nice treat as well.

Why is it that Pathfinder was played for a $16k car and Dice Game for a $20k+Mustang? Something doesn't seem right about that.

That playing of Grand Game today seemed an awful lot like one from the 80's or early 90's. The target price of $3.50 was the lowest i've seen in what seems like years. That was cool, very retro, so yeah, gotta love that.

I'd dare say Brandon was glad not to have won that first one-bid.  :-P

During SCSD#2, there was some necessary editting because Drew was choking. In studio, Drew was visibly seen stumbling off camera on the monitors trying to catch his breath. This was the reason for the strange contestant-wheel-contestant-wheel cuts during the last two spins of the day.

What you don't see was Drew gasping for air, someone handing him a bottle of Dasani, him taking a few large gulps, then returning to the wheel. This is also the obvious reason for his silence during those last couple spins. There's only one quick shot of him with a stressed look on his face in the final edit, but Drew was really having a hard time there, and I felt for him in the audience.

A most exciting show to see in person. Big wins, a $1.00 spin in the SCSD, and one crappy bid in the showcases. Oh, and if you're wondering where I was, I'm in the farthest left seat in the front row. :)

Opening:  Is this the first time that the wall has moved on camera?

Grandy:  First?!  And with a $3.50 target?!  Wow, feels just like 1981!  That was a hard setup.  I didn't think that aluminum foil was that expensive.  Great job by Jody on stopping the Greco.

Pathy:  For some reason, this game is not as exciting when it's played for a cheapo car like a Focus.  But a last-SP-on-last-number win from a tough trio of SPs is always great.  This may be a first for me, but I got the prices of all three SPs wrong.  And that would've been especially painful for me because I had all of the numbers in the price of the car correct except for the last number.  Uh-oh!  Brandon went to his car.  Nick is gonna get pissy again.

Squeeze Overplay:  Take that, Peanut Gallery!

1RP:  "The Cats" doesn't seem to fit as a multi-trip cue.  But it was great to hear an extra-long playing of it, thanks to those extra-long trip descriptions.  That was an impossible setup.  Sedona is normally uber-expensive, like Santa Fe.

Balance:  This game sure was rushed leading up to the checking of the price... but then the scales were about as rushed as a driver in The Villages.

Dice:  This game should've been played for the Focus instead of the Mustang.  Claudia must've spent some time at the craps table in her years because she did a great job of rolling fives.  Claudia also went to her new car, which means that Nick is gonna get pissy twice today.

SCSD #2:  Lots of obvious edits in this segment.  And I see that CJBojangles just mentioned why.

SC #1:  This Every Room staging sucks.  And so does Steven's bid.  $8,500 barely covers the arcade game.

SC #2:  Wow, this has to be the first trip to Puerto Rico offered on this show in at least 12 years.

My showcase bids:
ERITH--$18,307
Jet skis--$25,607

I'm really glad there's something to look forward to, at least I hope that the last week of first-run shows is what will become regular once the tapedates catch up.  All of the ultimate suck that was so beautifully removed back before Christmas was prevalent yet again.  I sincerely hope it did not take until the first of December tapings for them to get things right because I want the Drew Carey hosted Price Is Right that actually feels like The Price Is Right to return, unlike what this was, which didn't feel like The Price Is Right very much.

I never complain to see both a GP and an SP game in a show since it's so infrequent nowadays, but I don't feel it's asking too much to separate the GP and SP games into separate halves of the show.

I liked how the had such a low target price in Grand Game today.  If anything, Drew really couldn't make the stupid joke about the price of Campbell's soup compared to the target price.

I wonder how they kept those Klondike ice cream bars from melting inside the packaging.

It's going to be great to see the normal prize introductions and lack of stupid jokes about One Bid price reveals be gone.

The directing in 1 Right Price was so stale.  The lack of zoom on Amber as she brought the one right price over was weird, among the other still shots. It could have been a lot easier on everybody if they'd simply bring back the trip skins.

That was some weird manipulation of the scales in Balance Game.

I'm glad that when Salem rolled the one in Dice Game that it turned out to be the correct digit so Drew didn't breeze past it saying, "It doesn't matter because we know it's higher."

It really bugs me how such a simple, longstanding Showcase theme such as Every Room in the House can be botched as it was today.  Terrible staging of the prizes and the lack of the correct cue brought the whole thing down.  Sure, it was still a heck of a lot better than yet another crappy second Showcase, but it was nowhere near as good as it could have been.

Opening:  Is this the first time that the wall has moved on camera?

There's been many times where it's been seen moving as the doors were closing, but today's the first time I recall it being moved in a visibly-intentionally manner.

Uh-oh!  Brandon went to his car.  Nick is gonna get pissy again.

Hey, he was only doing what the host was telling him.  Of course, the host shouldn't be instructing him to run to his newly-won car.  He should be instructing him to proceed off stage to Roger.  Yes, Roger, because Roger also should be there.

I wonder that too, not just the Klondike bars, but all the other ice cream novelties and the Breyer's packages the show has had throughout the years.  Is it possible that the staff freezes those products for a long period of time so they don't melt as easily on stage?

Parts of this show -- Pathfinder in particular -- already felt like things were progressing towards the way they were on the Christmas shows.  Most of the second half, though, was just annoying.

I am so freaking sick of not seeing Drew in front of the Barker Wall when the Big Doors open.  It was mildly funny once; we're now up to seven or eight times this season.  Today, the wall even moved, which made no sense whatsoever.

Grand Game was freakin' hard.  I am utterly amazed that that was won (and for the first time all season, no less).

Speaking of Grand Game, who else remembers when the $2.79 Klondike Bars were on the show three or four times a week? :)

I've got to give Drew credit for his reaction to the bids on the Lancome products.  That was hilarious.

I still don't like that they're using green screens for trips, but at least they managed to do a decent job of presenting 1 Right Price today.  The artwork was absolutely beautiful...although I still think it's absurd that they can't just display said artwork in the studio instead of making the contestant and everyone in the audience look at green walls.  It was considerably better than that cluster**** of a presentation in Switch? a couple months ago, although it still resulted in some strange directing, particularly because they couldn't move the camera along with Amber as she carried the one right price over to the podium.  (Incidentally, when she revealed the price of Napa Valley you could see the green screen behind her plain as day.)

Oh, and Drew...it's not "Sedoña." :P

Balance Game just sucked.  Drew plowed through it like it didn't even matter, and the scales moved so slowly that they weren't even interesting to watch.

Salem struck me as something of a showoff.  I was glad he never got out of Contestants' Row.

How the hell hard is it to stage Every Room in the House correctly?

The second showcase was the stupidest one I've seen since...well, right before the Christmas tapings.

I'm no genius on the way the show operates, but maybe the simplest explanation is correct, as it often is: Perhaps there is no actual product in the packaging?

I never complain to see both a GP and an SP game in a show since it's so infrequent nowadays, but I don't feel it's asking too much to separate the GP and SP games into separate halves of the show.

I'll agree here. There seems to be something kosher about playing a GP game in one half of the show and a SP game in another half. Then again, I'm intrigued at how they decide all this; do they do a secret "blind draw" beforehand (as in, to determine what games are played and when), with S&P present, or what?

I liked how the had such a low target price in Grand Game today.  If anything, Drew really couldn't make the stupid joke about the price of Campbell's soup compared to the target price.

I wonder how they kept those Klondike ice cream bars from melting inside the packaging.

I was surprised that the target price was set so low. They probably wanted a win on this one.

As for the ice cream bar package — well, they probably use an empty box ... just like with the other perishable products.

Hey, he was only doing what the host was telling him.  Of course, the host shouldn't be instructing him to run to his newly-won car.  He should be instructing him to proceed off stage to Roger.  Yes, Roger, because Roger also should be there.

I'm sure I or someone else has asked before, so forgive me, but what is so wrong with someone being asked to go to his/her newly won car? They do it on "Wheel of Fortune," and I'm sure they did it on "Let's Make a Deal," et al. This is just me talking, but I'd probably have the contestant visit his new car (for a few minutes) before directing him offstage if I were the host, and I would have done so even during the Bob Barker-era.

Bob certainly did invite/encourage contestants to see their new cars as well on occasion.  He certainly did it in the 70s - that can be seen on the DVD set.

Bob Barker  had contestants go to their newly one cars.  Winners just celebrate a lot weirder than they used to

I'll agree here. There seems to be something kosher about playing a GP game in one half of the show and a SP game in another half. Then again, I'm intrigued at how they decide all this; do they do a secret "blind draw" beforehand (as in, to determine what games are played and when), with S&P present, or what?

Heck no, it's skillful crafting.  The kind of crafting that only Frank Wayne and Roger Dobkowitz have really proved themselves to posses.

Because GP and SP games possess a similar style (the use of a smaller product as part of the pricing game), you'd want to separate each into a separate half of the show at least to keep it varied.  Granted, with the way Adam's been doing lineups, moving one game seems to involve moving all of them around to create a proper lineup.  For instance, I would have made today's lineup Squeeze Play, Dice Game, Grand Game, Balance Game, Pathfinder, 1 Right Price.  Squeeze Play naturally works as a first game, and you've got the GP and SP games separated into separate halves of the show.  I opted to switch halves of the car games because Grand Game fits better in the first half of the show as opposed to the second.

As for the ice cream bar package — well, they probably use an empty box ... just like with the other perishable products.

That's probably all it is.  Still, I wonder just what exactly it is they do.

Aside from the fact that no other host than Drew has ever actively encouraged it extremely regularly (Yes, Bob did it, but nowhere near as much as Drew does. Heck, more often than not, Bob never encouraged car winners to run over to their car.  They just did), I've offered the directorial argument in the past.  It's impossible to get a camera in to get a shot of the contestant's face over at the car unless they turn back towards the camera, which few of them do.  Nobody wants to see the back of the contestants' heads.  We want to see their faces full of excitement.  In addition, aside from the fact that The Price Is Right is not Wheel of Fortune or Let's Make a Deal, typically car wins in those programmes were at the end of the show or that particular contestant's involvement in the programme.  Price doesn't work like that.  The contestant returns later at the Showcase Showdown, so it's not like a send-off-to-the-car thing is really making any big celebration.  Further, Price is simply a fast-moving show.  Let's not hog all the airtime for just one contestant celebrating his win.  Let's move along so we can get more interaction with all contestants.  That's where the heart of the fun of the show is.

I'm no genius on the way the show operates, but maybe the simplest explanation is correct, as it often is: Perhaps there is no actual product in the packaging?

One peculiar thing I noticed from the March 20, 1996 playing of Hole in One is a package of Klondike Big Bear ice cream sandwiches, with the sandwiches seen in the plastic case.  I wonder if they melted or were they frozen for a long period of time.

Grand Game fits better in the first half of the show as opposed to the second.

It works awfully well in the 2nd half in my opinion, too, better yet it works really well played last--where it used to be more often than not.

True, but I feel 1 Right Price works better to end the show rather than playing it third.  Grand Game last could push Pathfinder back to second and move Dice Game to fifth.  That would also work well.

A return to earlier shows, but still... not too bad. The second showcase was kind of lame, but it still wasn't as bad as the stuff we saw during the dark days. This seems to be the period when things were starting to cool down, which is why last month's shows were completely free of the stupid stuff.

BEST CONTESTANT OF THE DAY: Brandon
SHOW GRADE: 2

Point well taken Nick. I always find it enjoyable to discuss the intricacies of game slotting.  :P With what you've proposed, Nick, we could thus see Squeeze, Path, Balance, 1RP, Dice, and Grand.

Grand: Low Target. Rough Setup. When was the last time we had Cutex Nail Remover in a game? 20 Years ago? Klondike Bars are back and they still feel so good.  :-D The win was simply amazing!!

Pathfinder: As much as I like seeing this one played for the over $20K cars, It's kinda okay to see a less than $20K car offered once-in-a-while. Good job.

Squeeze: Audience....Shut the heck up!!!! Joan showed them very well.  8-)

1RP: Too bad.

Balance: Drew sure moved this one right along and we might need a load of WD-40 to work up the scale.  Too bad.

Dice: Claudia's reaction to seeing the car was great and she dersevedly earned herself it!!!  :-)

Showcases: More damages to the ERITH showcase. When can some things just be left alone? The second wasn't all that special but it could've done better without the "Misspelling" part. I'm glad Joan won, but I did feel sorry that there were no "Wheels" involved with her showcase. But I'm still happy for her.  :-)

A 2.75-star show.

Grand Game:  Finally, a $10,000 winner!  They still have the damn red graphic, though. :-x  I have nothing against the red graphic, I just think the green graphic works better with Grand Game.
Pathfinder:  Nice win! :-)  I was pretty surprised when I found out that 5 was not the last number in the price of the car.
Squeeze Play:  Good job! :-)  I was thinking the 6 should go myself.
1 Right Price:  Too bad! :-(
Balance Game:  Rats! :-(  It sure seemed like they were rushing this game a little for some reason.
Dice Game:  Great win! :-)
Showcases:  I knew Steven's bid was way low!

Good show today overall, IMHO. :-)

Bah.  I've always hated One Right Price, Barker's Bargain Bar, and Double Prices sixth, especially in more recent years where it's become much more common.  Squeeze Play makes a better last game for simply trying harder.  Switch? makes for an oddly decent last game just because that music seems so fitting to end things with.  rob's come up with the best lineup for these six games, I do believe, but the one we got still worked.

Pretty good show!

Not as good hosting quality as the early December tapings, but nowhere near the dreadful slapstick of the early season.  We have about 2-3 weeks estimated before we get back to a regular taping schedule so if this is the worst of what is to come, I can accept that.  If there is this type of improvement, we should be back to Christmas week airdate professionalism around mid-month.

Drew blundered at least once during the end of one of the games, saying that the Showcases were next when he obviously meant the Showcase Showdown.  Grand Game and Pathfinder were hard!  We had sharp contestants today, except for a couple of stupid $100 bids in Contestant's Row.

No, there was only ONE stupid bid on the Lancome. Salem's one-up was perfectly acceptable.

Or perhaps the "ice cream" wasn't the actual product but Styrofoam (i.e., a special package created just for the show, or something). I don't know what effect the studio lighting has on the temperature, but if it's what I sense it is, the ice cream would have been melted or melted significantly by the time of this Grand Game playing — even if they ran the product out from the freezer real quickly before the game started.

I just wish we were talking to Adam about this. :P

With what you've proposed, Nick, we could thus see Squeeze, Path, Balance, 1RP, Dice, and Grand.

Also good, though because I'm old-fashioned and like to put single-prize quickies in the fourth slot, I would swap Balance and 1RP around.

This is a very good point and one that I agree with.  What can I say?  When I draft lineups, I like to follow Roger's ways. :)

Not a reply to your post per se, but just how you spell program (as we do here in the United States) ... you must be using the British spelling ("programme") ... right?

Yep, I agree 100% Frank. I remember the days were Double Prices, One Right Price, and Bargain Bar were RARELY played last, Double Prices much more than the others. In fact it doesn't seem that long ago when Double Prices was played somewhat regularly in the 1st half (the 3 hole) as well. Were have those days gone? I miss 'em.

You're also right about Squeeze too, Frank, its soo much more interesting than the aforementioned games. I'd also throw in Freeze Frame as a worthy quickie to play last as well.

Speaking of Double Prices being played in the first half, back in the 80s it wasn't uncommon to see it in the first or second slot. That's something I would like to see.
