Title: TPIR Recap - 05/23/2016 (Primetime - "Survivor" Special)
Post by: TPIRFan2000 on May 23, 2016, 10:25:35 PM
For the first time in nearly 8 years (the last time being the 2008 Veterans' Day special), The Price is Right is airing in primetime. Pairs of an audience member and a past contestant from the show that the special is about (in today's case, Survivor) will be called on down. There are less commercial breaks. In addition, several pricing games are getting remodels for the specials.

Pretty good episode, although it didn't quite feel like a primetime special. It felt like a standard daytime special episode but with two really expensive IUFBs and the one $30,000+ automobile and less commercial breaks. Otherwise the prizes weren't really increased that much. However, I thought they did a good job of incorporating Survivor without going overboard, and the contestants interacted well with the Survivor alums. And of course, it's great to see Price in primetime again!

Lucky $even was very easy, and definitely would have been won if she hadn't went so high with the 2nd digit. Most Expensive on the other hand was pretty tough, I was pretty sure the TV was right.

Very exciting to see Punch a Bunch won for just the second time since the top prize became $25,000! I liked how the reveal of the final slip went with Jeff and Drew together.

The extinguishing of the flames and saying the wheel has spoken for those who got beaten on the Big Wheel was clever. The second showcase was pretty clever also.

Not sure what to think of Now or Then's set changes. It looks a little better and less clunky, but the new sign is a little small and dull. This is also Now or Then's first primetime appearance I believe.

Good Show.
If anything , they need to keep Punch a Bunch's Cash Breakdown Font and Colors from this show. Looks Nice.

I found it rather.... cheap, of CBS to give only the Showcase winning Survivor, a donation to their charity. The show was fun tho, and Now... or Then looks much better now that the screws holding it together aren't visible in Hi-Def.

A check of the Gavazzi/Scorpz calendars shows that yes, indeed, it is.

Unless it was played on the Davidson series (which I suppose cannot be ruled out given that the Gavazzi/Scorpz lineup page for it has quite a few blank spots, and not counting the two pilots), this is its first appearance outside of the daytime Price entirely.

Well, there's certainly a lot to digest with this one...

First and foremost, the fact that primetime Price is Right has made it back to my television set after an 8 year hiatus is phenomenal -- I don't care what gimmick was used to get it there.

Now we know what a Mike Richards' produced primetime show looks like, and quite frankly, I wasn't disappointed. Overall, I felt it was a good production, all things considered. I'll save further judgement until I've seen the remaining two shows, but hopefully more primetime episodes will come from this experiment of sorts.

People complain about how the budget was spent. I really don't think it was that bad. The Jeep Wrangler in Lucky $even was the perfect vehicle for the occasion and carried a price tag over $32K (still relatively expensive) with an incredibly generous setup. A loss was not intended there. The other games also saw nicely beefed up prize budgets with simple setups, and in no way can I complain about that.

In fact, I saw many parallels to how the budget was spent here compared to the typical Dob-produced primetime show. We just didn't get a Cadillac or a Corvette, and the showcases were only modestly sexed-up, but overall, the prizes were still more expensive in about every aspect than they would be in the typical daytime show. Plus, these specials are more about plugging the reality shows than they are about super extravagant prizes, unlike with the Million Dollar Spectacular series, so I'm not sure we should really be expecting anything greater in that regard. Now, if this was an MDS or equivalent-type special, I would be a bit disappointed, but it wasn't, so I'm not.

Also, we still have two more shows to go, so maybe we'll still get a 3 Strikes or Golden Road playing! :P

Just when I started to gripe about there only being one $25,000 slip on the board, I be damned if Punchy wasn't won! I'll also say the new paint job looks spiffy. Can't say it was necessary, but to me, it looks no better or worse than the old design.

Really, my only complaint is with the Survivor castaways themselves. I love Woo, but his persistence cost Inge that car in TTM, hands down. She and her husband were dead set on stopping, but no, we have to go one more because apparently all of the castaways up in their little corner of the studio happen to be car salespersons or something. While a little influence over the contestants is okay just for fun, it should never have reached the level it did in TTM, and that loss left kind of a sour taste in my mouth after what had really been a pretty good show to that point.

And one more complaint: as much as I like the Survivor theme music, it got old after its first playing, yet it continued to be played another I don't know how many times, which was far too many.

That's not the permanent sign.  It uses the "Survivor" font, as seen here:

I really liked it. Thought it was well done. This wasn't a Million Dollar Spectacular, I wasn't expecting everything to be through the roof. It was nice.

Lucky $even wasn't screaming to be won, but I knew that for the lead-off primetime special they'd definitely ease up. A shame they overpriced the Jeep by so much.

I was so happy that finally, Adam let the camera stay zoomed out and let the door open all the way to reveal all the prizes in Most Expensive before zooming in and panning to each of them. A much better reveal. I don't know if time prohibits him in daytime, but please port it over. Thank you. Oh and the new floor rug? Decal? It looks nice, but the old one didn't make the floor look as bare and I've like how it filled up some of the white since the current set was introduced.

Punch-A-Bunch was just great. The show definitely needed something like that to really elevate the show. A fine reveal by Drew, in my opinion. Definitely should've been more than top prize on the board, but who cares now!? It was won!

I...don't know if I like even MORE yellow on Now...or Then. Now it's popping a bit too much. You've got to watch that line when you're working with the color yellow before you cross from pop to blinding.

A shame TTM was lost that way. Can't escape some of the daytime habits in primetime. I really like the new color scheme. That's a really cool blue (looks to be the same as Punch-A-Bunch) and works well with the game.

Again, I wasn't expecting the show to blow the doors off with extravagant showcases, but I was still surprised at how cheap they were, but only because of what was in the showcases themselves. Some of the items (particularly the Fiji trip) seemed like they'd be a bit more expensive than they ended up being.

The different breaks definitely took me for a loop, but I liked it. I'm disappointed they didn't (or really, probably couldn't) use the extra time for a better lineup, but I think with some of the other stuff they had going on, this was okay. It perhaps would've been nice not to have had the common car pairing of L7/TTM, but the setups weren't that bad. Certainly not the worst lineup.

I like the old floor rug better, but I think that the new decal on the floor, being smaller, allowed them to place it closer to the prizes.  In fact, it allowed them to place the prizes and props closer together, allowing for a tighter shot that included everything.  Maybe this is why Adam showed everything together first like the old days.  I agree, a much better reveal.

I also liked the other changes.  The modifications to Now...or then and Punch-a-Bunch were minimal, keeping with the old styles yet doing just enough to class them up a bit.  I'm indifferent to the change to That's Too Much.

It was a pretty good special, but definitely had that slightly feel that you wanted to a little more- mainly, the sports/luxury car. In terms of budget, I'd rank it above a standard daytime show but below the 1986 primetime specials and even in raw terms, Dream Car and Big Money weeks, and quite frankly, comparable to a Kennedy episode in terms of overall prize budget. Although $1,000 as a minimum for one-bids is better than $500 in daytime, remember that was close to the minimum also for the '86 specials ($999) meaning that with inflation, it's loses its sparkle, although a couple of the prizes were nice. Given that a cellphone as a bonus prize in a pricing game in '86 (back when it was cutting edge technology) was offered where today's daytime frequently has calling plans and last night's didn't says something. I've also seen on some special daytime shows a $1500 minimum for one-bid items. This would have been a great show to do ME for three trips (all former Survivor locations, of course) just like on the first '86 special.

Nice win in Punch-A-Bunch. I'm fine with the dollar amounts for this and Plinko (remember in the '86 Specials, Plinko used the same amounts as daytime, so the higher intermediate amounts will be a decent bonus along with the more frequent intermediate Punch amounts).

I also can't complain too much about the money on the Wheel since once again, as on the '86 Specials, the dollar amounts were the same as daytime.

The games were fairly setup IMO, with Lucky $even being quite reasonable, but was done away by a poor first digit pick (the common way to lose on higher-priced cars).

If anything, the showcases are what had the lowest budget. IMO no showcases below $30,000 should be offered in primetime nowadays, and . Just look at the showcases on the first '86 special: Australia/Hot Tub/Pontiac Firebird convertible (instead we get a base ragtop Mustang) and the Mexican Riviera/Ski Boat/Cadillac (a base Prius instead last night) on the second. The fact is that the combined showcase offerings last night were over $11,000 less than they were in the first 1986 special, and this is before inflation!

In terms of set changes, I like how the wedges in Now or Then is somewhat easier to read, and of course Punch-a-Bunch following the current trend (and quite honestly is closer to the original color scheme). Slight redos in Most Expensive and That's Too Much also didn't bother me.

Although there are fewer commercials in primetime, remember that with nine extra contestants and with all of the Survivor references, the pacing didn't feel much different from a daytime show. Still, where the runtime back in 1986 was 48-49 minutes, 41-42 minutes is on par with a daytime show from back then meaning that we still won't see as many longer games/non-two prize showcases like we once did.

I'd expect to see a lot of furniture/houseware items offered for tonight's Big Brother.

Please explain what you mean by this, as there have been multiple instances of contestants winning that amount of money in prizes or greater prior to the showcases, both in primetime and daytime. Hell, we once had a freakin' million dollars won in Clock Game!

I agree it's a more modern take without being overly modern, but personally I didn't think it looked any better with the turntable than before, which has been the problem with Now or Then's set since after they ditched the Hollywood mural in season 31.

I'll be completely honest; this is the first TPIR episode I've watched since Bob Barker appeared on the show. I know that means I'm not a LFaT anymore, but the show left me more than I left the show. Anyway, being a big Survivor fan I tuned in to see what would happen.

I love how the producers went all out in their efforts to combine Survivor with TPIR. Everything, from the prizes to the torches to the date on Now... or Then. You could tell their hearts were in it. Moreover, Jeff Probst appeared, and he was excellent. The only thing I regret from Probst is that he didn't read off the Punchboard money slip as if it was a vote.

My disappointment, however, was the fact that the Survivor players seemed to just be there as props. Of all the players, only Woo and maybe Boston Rob seemed to make an effort to play the game alongside their contestant. The others simply cheered. It took a little bit away from the experience because I was expecting to see the Survivor players be more involved.

Overall, the show was great, and if I wasn't busy I'd watch the other two, even though I have no interest in the other reality shows. If it took a gimmick to get me re-interested in TPIR, so be it.

I really enjoyed it.  It wasn't the best in terms of wins, but they really had the fun factor there.  And it was nice to see decent prizes, three models, and special guests without any of it feeling cheesy.  And honestly, I think I agree with crazypackersfan - it did feel like the Survivor contestants were just props.  I'm glad they didn't force things more...but maybe it could have been done with just a handful of people like Boston Rob (love him or hate him but he knows how to pull off the camera presence) and Jeff Probst.

Lucky Seven had a pretty easy setup for once.  Too bad that was lost.  :(

Awesome to see Punch a Bunch finally get another $25K winner.  And I like the new paint scheme.  Hope they keep the new cash chart as well, replacing the Survivor logo with a Price logo.

Now...or Then is one of my favorite games, so it was great to see it refurbished and in primetime.  And won!

The only thing I really didn't like was seeing That's Too Much! in primetime.  I just know if I ever get on stage that's the game I'll play.  (Hate it so much.)

Was honestly a bit surprised that the showcases were on the less expensive side tonight, but it wasn't a Million Dollar Spectacular or anything, and they had to double the winning bid for charity.

Hope the next two nights are good as well!

Using the timings from three years ago (because those are the timings I know), the six pricing games timed out to be exactly the same length as a daytime episode. The show ate up about a minute of its extra primetime running time in the opening alone, between Jeff Probst's introduction and the extended come on downs. I never thought I'd hear the opening music actually run out and loop. (At least, not since the opening music was lengthened back in season 30.)

Most Expensive is themed to reference Survivor's "Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty" season, and brawn is represented by a Vespa? That was screaming for a home gym.

I would also submit that "brains" would be better represented by a computer. You may counter that they already planned to use a computer to represent "outwit" in the second showcase. I would respond to that by saying that they put a second smart TV in that same showcase, so what's the difference?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the average viewer is going to notice when you repeatedly say that the winning castaway will have money donated to charity, but you never specify how much money it is.

TV Ratings Monday
Adults 18-49 Rating / Share 1.3/5
Viewers (millions) 6.19

Not terrible considering what it was up against.

I got the sense that they only took the reference as far as who was modeling, and not to the actual prizes. (The "brainy" Rachel, the "brawny" James, the "beautiful" George.)

On that note, I guess it's now enough of a tradition for George to model one of the Most Expensive prizes that they're going to do it even when they have a third model available.

Honestly, I kind of like it.  Since they're not doing skit-based showcases anymore (at least not that I remember in awhile) it's a good way to see more of George (and the third model doesn't have to run backstage after the IUFB).

Good behind the scenes info...including an injury.

Good to see they had fun, but calling the Showcase the "Showcase Showdown" made me sigh a little.

Since they're not doing skit-based showcases anymore (at least not that I remember in awhile)
I believe they have not done those since Season 37, after the "Drewcases" rather clearly failed.

What surprised me was that it looped at all -- back in the old days, if Walking ran out, they'd just start the theme early.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the average viewer is going to notice when you repeatedly say that the winning castaway will have money donated to charity, but you never specify how much money it is.

I didn't think they said anything about that.  That was awkward.

Steve, I was at the Amazing Race taping and I can confirm that it is the value of what the showcase winner's showcase is donated to charity.

That makes the decision even more confusing. Why, at the end of the show, wouldn't Drew specify "And [name] has just won $30,000 for [name of charity]"? That's a respectable number and sounds less dodgy than just "money."

Or just say they get the value of the showcase donated to their charity, like the Shell Game bonus is the value of the prize.

I wonder what they were planning to do if there was a double overbid.  Saying that neither charity would get any money because nobody won wouldn't exactly be great television, so I assume there had to be a backup plan, but I can't imagine what it was.

Perhaps the teams would have been told they both overbid and would continue to rebid until at least one of them was not over?

The double overbid plan could simply have been: "since both contestants overbid, we'll give [x dollar amount] to your charities"

This would have been a great show to do ME for three trips (all former Survivor locations, of course) just like on the first '86 special.

Totally agree with this assertion.  The way they present trips with monitors instead of the ancient drop panels gives them the flexibility to do something like that.  I mean, who wouldn't want to visit the Pearl Islands, Brazil, Nicaragua or Samoa?  And Fiji could have been the other trip offered, with Probst there to smile and wave as George reads the promo for the next season of Survivor.

And for crying out loud, couldn't Probst have gotten some shorter torches during the SCSD? And will he add that snuffer to his collection, or did he bring it from there? :-?
