Title: The popular consensus on what pricing game should return?
Post by: Kyle on October 28, 2017, 01:30:17 PM
Let's speak hypothetically for a moment. Suppose the current administration has decided they are going to bring back one game (and only one game) that has previously been retired and they will bring back the game voted most popular out of all the games that have been retired. I'd be very interested to see what game is the most popular choice to be brought out of retirement.

Now, when making your choice, try to keep a few things in mind...

a) Time constraints have nothing to do with this choice. (For example, don't omit Super Ball!! if that's your choice because "there's not enough time for it in today's show.")
b) No votes on "only if they keep the original prop" because when Time is Money was brought back, it obviously underwent a significant change and it's the year 2017, it's very likely going to be changed. (For example, if Penny Ante was brought back, no doubt they'd bring it back with LED screens instead of flip-open parts)
c) Please offer an explanation as to why you voted for your choice.

All right, just to break the ice, I'd probably choose Super Saver, myself. Bringing it back would add another grocery game into the mix, is another game that isn't necessarily played for a car or cash which has been too much of a recurring theme in games introduced in the last few years (in my view) and the concept of trying to keep more than you lose was a concept offered in other games over the years (such as Give or Keep and Buy or Sell, both of which are also retired) is an interesting one that could stand to make a comeback.

Floor's open.

I would say Super Ball!!

The show seems to be going for flashy, recognizable games as of late (Hot Seat, Gridlock!, etc), and I always felt it was unduly retired without even an attempt to rework it.

Just like Time is Money, I would rework the game to be played solely for cash (sorry reveal lovers). The center ring would be worth $10,000, the middle ring would be worth $2,500, and the outer ring would be worth $1,000.

I would have the SP portion play out differently as well. The contestant would get one ball for free, and would have the chance to earn up to three more balls by arranging four SP's in order from least expensive to most expensive. Each correct choice would net them an extra ball, for a grand total of three balls. If they make an incorrect choice, that portion of the game would stop with whatever number of balls they have accumulated.

Drew does his inspiration roll. The contestant will no longer get a practice roll (c'mon, they don't get a practice putt!). Once all the rolls have been made, a fifth SP is presented to the contestant. They must correctly place that small prize in line with the other SP's. If they are right, they win the perennial golden "Super Ball", which doubles the money amounts on the board ($20,000, $5,000, $2,000).

If the game is played perfectly, the contestant can hypothetically win $60,000.

Hurdles. A grocery item game with fun, distinguishing characteristics.

Penny Ante.  The game is quick to play and easy to understand.  It was a grocery item game but doesn’t need to be; could be reworked into a number of ways.

Especially with timing constraints, seems like an easy choice.

I would like to say Superball since it was one of my favorite games, but I'll say Barkers Markers/Make Your Mark. It had a unique concept and the only reason it was retired was because Drew messed up the part about giving back the $500 if you changed the marker. It would also add another 3 prize game to the rotation.

It could be reworked to have only the two items (no bonus prize) but have said items be major non-car prizes (i.e., trips, living rooms, kitchen islands, etc); in fact one Host Your Own used two cars

I'd have "Hit Me"-- you might think my reasoning is a bit off, but I'd like to have Hit Me back because I'd like to see blackjack being played w/Drew Carey (and the dealers can rotate-- even George can get in on the dealing, which would give him another pricing game to help out on, besides "Most Expensive").

I'm going way back in time here, but I'd vote for Mystery Price.

I'd love to see a different kind of small prize game featured, and this one involved actually trying to price four small prizes without going over, and accumulating enough money in a bank to cover the price of another prize's price, which was the mystery price.

Shell Game and Bonus game have the "higher or lower" element, one SP game has true or false, some have the double prices feature (Pathfinder/Secret "X").

Although I think Drew would have the most fun with Bump, I would really like to see Hurdles or Penny Ante come back...
Hurdles would recapture some of the classic fun that makes people love Cliffhangers so much & I always liked Penny Ante even though there was nothing real special about it.

Bump makes the most sense. They need quick games, they can play it without the models doing the wind up bit.
I don't know if you'd stick with the British bus theme, maybe bumper cars instead?

Give or Keep.

Love seeing the turntable spin around to reveal those small prizes.  And a contestant can choose a wrong small prize and still win the game.

Too bad Gwendolyn's not on the show anymore; that game would make perfect sense indeed!

If it were up to me, I'd bring back either Penny Ante, Hit Me or SuperBall!!!

Poker Game could work, but put a brand-new twist in the game: Offer a $5,000 cash bonus for winning after keeping your original hand. If you pass it down to the house, the cash is forfeited.

I could see Joker working as well. I hate that it and Poker Game never got played with Drew.

Once again, to keep the thread on the rails, we're asking for one game here. Try and avoid just listing every retired game in your posts. :)

2 words: $UPER $AVER!!!!!!!!! Love the little "bugs" on the display like "WINK" "LOSK", and the weird display at the beginning of one game. This game should be able to use SPs and instead of 1 dollar, they'd have to get $150 or more in the bank. The display was one of my favorites. If the game is won, the amount in the bank and the word "WIN" should flash alternately. If the game is lost, have the game setup so that the plug gets removed and the game turns off. Play it for maybe a car or some decent cash amount. Same 4 picks.

I would have to say either Give or Keep and/or Super Ball.

Give or Keep would be easy to revive with the current turntable setting and Super Ball would be revised as a cash game with a small prize higher or lower guessing game and a top prize being $30,000 in cash. The circles from bottom to top would be $500, $1,000 and $5,000 and the final Super Ball would be worth triple (or $1,500, $3,000 and $15,000).

No, you wouldn't, because you're only supposed to list one game.

The one pricing game that I would like to see revived is Super Ball, with a top prize of $30,000 cash.

Now that we have better technology I wouldn't mind seeing Split Decision comeback.  I imagine eight touch screens where the contestant just needs to touch the three numbers in the price of the smaller prize.

I'm thinking Phone Home Game for $30,000 and with the LCD screens.  It'd bring back the classic home phone calling element that disappeared like forever ago.  Plus, like I said, I'm sure they could rework the original prop and/or build a new one to accommodate LCD screens.

Likely if Phone Home Game did come back it would use Skype and would have some new name like "Chat for Cash" to reflect video rather than a traditional phone call.

Penny Ante had a sad and miserable end outside in the rain. I would like for it to return, unless they were planning on retiring it anyway around that time.

I'd say Credit Card. Pretty much this game's theme also spawned to Shopping Spree, but the opposite way (buy the most expensive prizes). Give it a new paint job and hey, there's your new returning pricing game.

I'm in the minority here, but I'd bring back Joker as a car game with a twist.  At the beginning, the host gives the player $1000.  Then the pricing SP part is played like it used to be e.g. $25 or $52.  Even with perfect playing, one card is still standing.  Now the twist:  the player could take the chance that the Joker was discarded, keep the cash, and go for the car.  Or to guarantee the car, the player returns the cash in exchange for discarding the fifth card.  If the player makes a mistake in the SP portion, or even completely flubs it, he/she can still return the cash for a discard.  The player would never have the option of walking away with only the cash.

I'm assuming that if the contestant loses, they must give back the money like in Barker's Markers? It's an interesting idea, but I can see the guaranteed win scenario being very anti-climactic.

SUPERBALL for sure and after Drew mentioned in Hole in One or Two ...he would love a bowling game since he has only made 1 putt in 10 years. There is a ball to roll at least so it is a type of bowling. Just a thought.

I have always loved Poker Game.  And with the technology, they could make it work with three 4-digit prizes.

The contestant picks two prizes, and the prices display on monitors at the reveal podium by the model, in place of fold-down reveals.  Then the 5 best numbers are used on the game board and the used numbers change colors on the stand by the model.  Then the third prize price is revealed and it, combined with the unused numbers in the first two prizes, form the other hand.  It follows similar rules, has new new tech the show loves, and increases the potential winnings compared to the original format.

The thing with Poker Game is if it were to ever return it should be re-done so that pricing knowledge comes into play more. It was more random guessing than pricing knowledge. I think the way to do this would be to use groceries as Ton80 suggested, with the idea being to choose the more expensive grocery products and have the hand be made up of the starting digit in each product (picking products that are $8.xx, $9.xx, $10+ in price beating ones that are $5.xx, $6.xx, and $7.xx in price for example).

This raises several questions:

1.)  Exactly how many groceries are you planning to use for this?

2.)  Isn't this basically Hi Lo?

3.)  Given that higher cards don't always make better hands, how does this actually have anything to do with poker?

There's no reason for the rule change. You can play Poker with 4 digit prizes, but the set was antiquated, and really there's no reason for Poker to return.

My thought was 6 groceries with the contestant picking 3, and I should've put that there would be 2-3 groceries with the same starting digit/2 digits for $10+ items so there would be pairs (so if there's one $10.xx product and two $9.xx products, the best hand would be a pair of nines and the 10). Yes the idea I threw out there would be Hi Lo-esque which didn't occur to me, but Gridlock is pretty much Money Game and there's been other similarities in pricing games. I don't necessarily think it's a good idea myself, but Ton bringing up the idea of using groceries and my thought there should be a way to make pricing more of a factor in the game made me think of it.

How does the contestant get five cards if he doesn't pick any of those?

Gridlock! isn't supposed to be a half-baked reworking of Poker Game.

It is a little too much like Hi-Lo.  And would require picking way too many products.  It would take 3 minutes to get through the grocery prize copy alone.

Poker Game wasn't ever a real test of pricing as much as it was test of the contestant's knowledge of poker strategy.

The problem I have with that is not everybody knows how to play poker, and there's no good way to explain the concept quickly. If you don't know anything about poker hands, the game turns into "do whatever the audience is shouting".

And it's not the strongest play-along game, either. Unless I know for sure that the video camera is $899 because I saw it on the show last week, I have no idea what prizes I'm "supposed" to aim for. That problem is still there whether you're playing with an $899 video camera or an $8.99 vitamin supplement.

Granted, the "keep your hand or pass it" question usually gets me shouting at the TV--there's a reason the game lasted 32 years, after all. I just feel like it's the only interesting decision the game has, and it kind of leaves me feeling ambivalent about the game, even more than the cheap prizes. (After all, Clock Game used to be even cheaper, but it was still really engaging to watch.)

If we're hypothetically bringing back Poker Game, I wouldn't be bothered if they tried some different twist on it. Heck, they could even turn it into Give or Keep and it would still work-- just try to pick the two most expensive prizes, if your hand is more expensive, you "beat" the other hand. There's still room to gussy it up so it feels like a Poker Game; they could "deal" themselves two prizes at random out of four cards before deciding whether to play or pass. Or make some sort of bailout option where they have to choose between "folding" or going "all-in". The poker theme is versatile enough, surely there's something more interesting that can be done than "pick a price with lots of 9's in it".

I'm sure I'm the only one here who even remotely wants this one back, but I think the show could try giving the original Bullseye game another chance.  It's extremely simple yet very challenging.  And to be honest, if super painful losses (especially losing because of missing the price by $1 on the last guess) was what ultimately led to its demise, these last two 3 Strikes playings should've killed 3 Strikes by that logic.

Poker Game, with the original big banana remix music cue or star crossed music cue used. If the contestant wins the game they get cash or prize bonus.
