Title: Jeopardy! reportedly searching for a new host
Post by: jaywilliams on April 04, 2019, 06:08:36 PM
  I was reading on several webpages today including Screen Gant and Radio Online that the folks at Jeopardy! are reportedly expedited the search for a replacement host for Alex Trebek because of Trebek's pancreatic cancer situation, despite that Mr. Trebek has three years left on his contract but, the show, Sony Television and CBS is not taking any chances due to Trebek's poor health. For suggestions of a new Jeopardy! host, here are my list of possibilities:
   Tom Bergeron - my first choice and popular host of Dancing with the Stars on ABC and previously hosted AFV and Hollywood Squares;
    Dan Patrick - longtime sports anchor who hosted Sports Jeopardy!;
    Brad Rutter - my second pick, actor and tv host himself who was a five time champ on the show and won five tournaments on Jeopardy!;
     Alex Faust - play by play announcer for the Los Angeles Kings and one of Alex Trebek's top choices for his successor;
     Todd Newton - host of several game shows in the last twenty years and former E channel host, which would finally give him a boost in his career after missing out on the TPIR hosting gig 12 years ago;
     Mark L Wahlberg - also hosted several game shows in the past almost three decades and currently host of Antiques Roadshow and Temptation Island.

Those are my choices, who do you think should replace Alex Trebek onJeopardy!.

I like Tom Bergeron.

I just did a Google search and I didn't see any corroborating results from sources that I'd consider legitimate and credible. Every result I did see looked like fake news.

Beyond that...am I the only one who thinks this is wildly inappropriate? Alex just announced publicly that he has a life-threatening illness...and we're speculating about his employer potentially going behind his back to find a replacement, when Alex himself promised to be open and transparent to prevent exactly this type of thing?

Radar Online is nothing but garbage. I'm shocked they're allowed to stay around and spread slander.

ThomHuge, I found this reported on the web pages of TV.com and TVInsider for confirmation, but neither one mentioned any possible replacement names.

Neither of those are what I'd call credible.

Seriously, I feel dirty for giving these “sources” clicks.

The one source is one guy’s podcast, known for other “scoops” like “Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber’s Underwear War”.

Rule #1 of journalism: if you can’t get two credible, independent sources to verify the story, you don’t run the story.

Also the “source” article is full of errors and conjecture
Quote from: Crappy article not worth being dignified with a link
As beloved gameshow host Alex Trebek continues to struggle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, the network that has been his home for 30 years is cooking up a plan to replace him.

Lol which network would that be? Did the authors do any research at all as to who airs the show?

This looks like a case of every reputable outlet going “not credible” until some tabloid goes LEROY JENKINS and forces out an article as quickly as they can, giving the rest of the clickbaitosphere license to play catch-up until the story gets retracted or dies

 But yeah, this is gross and exploitative.

and you wonder why Trebek did the announcement himself rather than let the news do it first

I'd like to apologize for responding to this. Not being familiar with the sources in question, I assumed they were legitimate. I hope Alex continues as host for a long time to come.

Nothing to apologize for—it’s just a lesson learned about credible sources and critically evaluating info. Good for all of us to learn it, especially in a world where we’re constantly being flooded with more and more sensational articles fighting for clicks and attention.

Didn't we just go through this type of thing about a month ago, except it was about Card Sharks?

To me, this is not news and they have already talked about it for a couple of years now. I do hope that whoever gets picked to be the replacement that the gameplay stays the same.

You and me both.

So what you are telling me that where I found this article was on tabloid webpages including tv.com, tv insider and screen rant. I just looked for confirmation about this on game show news net and buzzer blog and both reported nothing about this.

Here's a tip on credible sources: If the vast majority of people haven't heard of the website, don't mention it yourself. Let me explain. Screen Rant, tv. com and tv insider are all little known sources. But who hasn't heard of WSJ, The New York Times, Fox News, CNN, Associated Press, etc. In sum, wait for the sources that have a larger following. Only then is the information more likely to be true.

I tender that the overall accuracy of an outlet's reporting matters more than how many followers they have.

It's a decent rule tpir04, but there are always exceptions: there are still good, small, specialized news sources that few people have heard of, and even big "established" news sources are prone to fouling up and having to pull a story or issue a major correction.

jaywilliams, the bigger thing at play here is learning the difference between independent sources versus dependent sources in a story. If two people were at the scene of a car crash and witnessed it first hand, both people would be independent sources. If somebody wasn't at the scene but heard about it from somebody who was, they would be a dependent source, because they would depend on the first person for their information.

There is nothing wrong with posting "dependent" sources, as long as the independent sources they cite are credible. But dependent sources are only as good as the info they cite. That's why reputable outlets won't vouch for a story until there's two independent sources.

Notice in the Screen Rant and TV Insider articles, all they say is that "Radar Online says..." First, Radar Online is owned by the same group that publishes things like National Enquirer. Red flag #1. Second, Radar Online's source is, again, some guy's podcast that seems to rely on twitter rumors with titles like "Catlyn Jenner Obsessed With Kate Middleton" and "Bradley Cooper Move On From Lady Gaga", and who keeps citing Alex Trebek's boss as some faceless "network", seemingly oblivious to who owns and airs Jeopardy. So I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Screen Rant and TV Insider didn't do any of the reporting themselves. They either couldn't verify the story with who works at the show, or they didn't try. (Alex has said nothing yet about wanting to voluntarily step down, so of course they couldn't verify it--why would anybody who works at the show go on the record and confirm they're going behind Alex' back to replace him against his wishes? That would be gross.)

Quote from: Screen Rant Headline
Jeopardy! Reportedly Searching For Alex Trebek's Replacement

If they have to use weasel words in the headline like "reportedly", "allegedly", "supposedly", "claimed", you should be worried, cause it means they're not confident enough in the story to run it independently. Start checking the sources, cause there's a chance that somebody somewhere just made it up.

And don't worry about being the "first" to break news. News is manipulative and cutthroat and dependent on getting clicks to survive. Too many people are focused on being "first" and not "most accurate". When there's a sketchy story it's almost never a bad idea to wait for more verifiable information to come out. If a story makes you feel strong emotion—happiness, anger, pride, vindication—and that emotion pushes you to share a "fact" with others, STOP. That's when fact checking is MOST important.

Tldr: If you're overjoyed to learn about ABC's new hybrid show "The Press Your Luck/American Idol Hour", check with somebody reputable and make sure it actually exists before breathlessly sharing it with everybody else.

This is excellent advice, but the article in this case is really just stating out loud the obvious.  Of course a multi-million-dollar show that produces 230 new episodes per year is going to be considering its next steps when its host has a grave medical diagnosis.  And I'm sure Alex is as aware of this as anyone else.

That said, the one silver lining in all of this is that the timing works out about as well as it possibly could for both Alex and the show.  My understanding is they finish up taping for Season 35 either this week or next and usually don't return until the end of July.  So Alex will have the next three months to focus entirely on his treatment without any interruption to the broadcasts, and the show can take its time on whatever contingencies it has to consider.

These ‘reports’ are a crock of sh*t, and should there be even an ounce of legitimacy to them, it’s entirely inappropriate and disrespectful to be having this discussion right now.

Trebek is fighting the good fight, and unless something official comes out about him choosing to step down with a legitimate hosting search launching — which, per Trebek himself recently, isn’t happening — then there is no need to be having this conversation.  I know all of you mean well, but this is neither the time nor place.

Update: Season 35 is a wrap. Pre-production work on Season 36 is already ongoing with Trebek planning to be right where he’s been these past 35 years come September.

If y’all want to discuss this update, go right on ahead but in a new thread. Keeping this one locked.
