Even worse, Debra though it was $6394 - but she got talked out of it by Them. Sometimes you have to stand your ground.

-Lineup: Moderate. 2nd half seemed short, felt like we could have fit Cardy instead of TTM (which needs to be 5th, at least). I will take Tempty and a SP & GP in the same show, though.
-Tempty: I won, but who else is going to? "Easy" setup for this game with the repeating 1s not an option, but still -95 and 23k/24k looking the same. 8/10
-Cliffy: Good recovery. 9/10
-Sidey: El easy. 9/10
-SD1: 4/5
-TTM: Excellent!! 10/10
-Hi/Lo: 80 cents...yep, the hard setup has returned. Someone in chat who was at the taping said the Body Splash may have been over 7.99 too...you're kidding, right?? 8/10
-Pushy: Ugh, that's as slow as you'll ever see it. 7/10
-SD2: 4/5
-SC1: A quickie...pretty well-done, though. 4.5/5
-SC2: Agh, another one of these...why? Do people like one trip only? 4/5
-Results: This was just like an episode earlier in the season. Someone bid 22,000 on a splendido, and the ARP was 20,9xx. Peanut Gallery, stop advising the SC2 bidder - it's closer than you think!! 7.5/10
-Drew: OB4 dragged it out too long. Tried to spice up Pushy but it definitely leaned too far toward teasing. 7/10

PGs: 51/60
SDs: 8/10
SCs: 16/20
Drew: 7/10

82 --> B-

EDIT: To elaborate on the below, I saw it stop at 20 at the edge of the HD feed (obviously not in SD). :/

I can see why some people get really annoyed with Drew shouting at the mountain climber. When the climber gets to around the 20th step, and they cut away from the top of the mountain to take a shot of Drew yelling, no longer including the mountain climber in the shot at all, that's just bad.

I can't say I understand how the lineups work anymore.  I can't believe we got an SP game after Temptation was played.   I can't believe the other car game was over minimum length, that the GP was not Pick a Pair, that Push Over was played instead of something quicker... yeah, I don't get the lineups anymore at all.  Having said that, it was actually a good lineup for a change.  Not just "better than usual lately" good, but good good!  Temptation, Cliff Hangers, Side by Side, That's Too Much, Hi Lo, Push Over... how can won really complain?

So... the second showcase was essentially a 1-prize showcase?  That was weird.

I don't say it often, but I feel it's warranted today:  Hi Lo was a forced loss.  Also, the editing at the end of the game was absolutely atrocious.

I'm kinda' surprised Cliff Hangers was won:  the voice recorder thing looks a lot more expensive than it is, and I thoought for sure Gereshom was going to overprice it.

That's Too Much was bizarrely easy for the price having been eighth.  I really believe that they just don't know how to make the game hard anymore.

I guess one classic Temptation cue is better than none, but still, it's not like any of those cues sound outdated.  Can't they please keep all four around?

Well, this isn't Drew's fault. Barker use to shout out too, when the mountain climber got too close to the edge. This is the (former) director's doing...

Quote
-SC2: Agh, another one of these...why? Do people like one trip only? 4/5

Well, in all fairness, it did seem to be the trip of a lifetime. It was certainly no ordinary "6 days / 7 nights" trip, like they usually give away. (Although it was only 4 days.. they coulda popped for a couple more days, really.

You can thank Bart for that one.

And...today's show was pretty darn good.

Tempty: I would've stopped, that's a lot of value in prizes right there. I believe either dh or Kev said in chat they remembered the price of the car from Stack the Deck a bit ago.

Cliffy: Seeing this right after Tempty was pretty sweet. And that was an exciting win! But Bart...we don't care what Drew looks like when he's yelling, show us Hans!

SBS: Great to see this show up.

IUFB4: Having Drew model those sunglasses was hilarious.

TTM: Hmm, when do we start calling this game "That's Too Easy!"? :P

Hi Lo: Terrible editing here. Todd97 in chat today said Drew did infact reveal the prices, so that must've been edited out. Although I have to admit it was kinda neat hearing the theme start on a different note...

Pushy: I have never seen someone play this game more cautiously. This was hilarious!

SCSDs: The Wheel seemed to be in a rather bad mood today, not too nice to anyone.

SC1: Pretty good. I had to laugh when Rich asked Debra if she liked exercizing and her response was "No!"

SC2: Very interesting...Who knows how to price it though...

Aww.
Maybe I'm the only guy who likes when Drew gets over-amped hen Hans nears the top of the mountain. It's always funny to me. And Bart's known for ruining a lotta rudimentary shots anyway, so maybe this ain't all Drew's fault.

Plus, for me, Cliffy is my AllTime Fave, and I love to see those shots of the whole actual game board while the game's in session.

Nice lineup today.. directing and editing were a little wacky. Drew and his sunglasses were funny. In general Drew has been doing a fine hosting job for a while now.

I'm always happy to see Temptation played with a fairly high value on the "gifts".  BONUS:  it was played for a decent car, too!

I've got to agree.  Hi-Lo's setup was pure evil today.

That's Too Much:  What a strange, strange setup.  Has there ever been such a lowball starting price as $11,498?  Steve?

I've got no beef with the 2nd showcase.  I prefer to see one trip with lots of bells and whistles, rather than a trip combined with unrelated prizes.  A trip to NYC with show tickets, limo service, and CASH is a pretty nice package.

Debra F's bid on her showcase was dangerously close to joining the "Stupidest Bids Ever" club.  She won with her $1 bid, but Debra V wasn't over by much.  Debra F. was this close [holding up finger and thumb very close together] to making herself a YouTube hit - and not in the good way!!

Yeah... I don't know how I forgot about that.  I felt it was foolish for top winner Debra to bid $1 on her showcase.  Sure, she won, but it was way too close for comfort.

I've never been critical of a contestant bidding $1 on their showcase when it was mind-numbingly obvious that the other contestant had overbid.

This was definitely not one of those cases.  Despite the fact that she was over, Debra V's bid was actually pretty good.

Temptation: Great to see it again!  :-D

Cliff Hangers: It's always a thriller when Drew shouts at Hans to stop, and thankfully, he did.

Side by Side: I knew that trip could not be $2838. Great win!

That's Too Much: With all the wins this game's been getting lately, could it be that they suddenly get the hang of it? And WTF kind of starting price is $11,498, especially for one that costs about $9,000 more than that?

Hi-Lo: The evil setup du jour. I had no idea that Glad trash bags were more than the mouthwash!  :-x

Push Over: I knew she went one push too far.

Showcases: Another $1 bid, and better yet, on a trip to New York, with all the bells and whistles!!! Lucky for her, the other contestant went over, and not by much, either.

Hopefully, we'll see some more games that haven't been played in a while return to the show, along with 3 Strikes and a retooled Bargain Bar (or whatever they're going to call it)...

As bad as the lineups have been lately today's was a gem! Temptation shows again, and we actually got a SP game to go along with it too!! And even though we had another quickie to end the show at least it was Pushover, which just happens to be one of the best quickies on the show.

Bart's directing during Cliff Hangers was just abysmal

Whoo hoo Side by Side 3rd!!

Hi-Lo was just evil today. Boy, the editing work here was just pitiful.

BTW, Frank, they do know how to make TTM hard, but unfairly hard when they put the price 2nd in line.

I feel mixed on the Big Ol' Trip to New York showcase. On one hand, winning one trip is a lot easier to deal with than winning three (How many people are able to get that much time off?), and I always think it's interesting to see a showcase that's a little different. But it seems bizarrely hard to price extras like half-a-day with a professional shopper, and basing a showcase around a single prize increases the odds that a contestant doesn't care about anything in his or her showcase. Plus, the showcase feels like one...really...long...plug, even if it's technically several. Having a few different prizes breaks up the pace a bit.

My at-home bid of $15,000 (which is as low as I ever bid) wasn't bad, but I had no clue if it was going to be $12,000 or $45,000.

On to the rest of the episode; I second Frank- hooray for today's lineup! Especially Temptation! I hope we see it again soon. Side by Side also pleased me- not sure why, since it's been played at a very healthy rate this year.

For Cliff Hangers...I don't mind Drew goofing around, but goofing around that takes the focus away from what's happening in the game (or away from the contestant) isn't good. Just then, it was a little more important to see where Hans was gonna stop.

My Temptation rule remains the same: When the four gifts total more than $5,000, take the prizes every time.

They've been doing that since Bob's last couple of seasons. This is good. The game gets more exciting when the prizes are harder to give up.

Ok show today! Buffalo viewers got pre-empted during the price reveal in Temptation due to the tragic plane crash in Clarence. Prayers to those folks.

Did anyone catch the reference to "The Producers" when Drew revealed top winner Debra's showcase price? One of my favorite musicals, and quick thinking by Drew when Sardi's came up!

Tempty: Great to see it again! And I think this is a nice first game. Thought that was an odd car price. I probably would've bailed.
Cliffy: That recorder was tough. Thought he had lost, but nice win.
SBS: Easy. Nice to see this game in the 1st half for a change.
TTM: I feel like this was set up to be lost, with the price that far down the line.
Hi Lo: Tough. Those trash bags are always deceiving. A couple of others were there too where it's tough to determine the cost since we really haven't seen them before.
Pushy: Toss up between 6394 and 5639.

Didn't like the mega one-prize showcase to NYC. Just felt long and dragged on. The price, however, could've been much higher than it was.

Nice lineup. Switch Hi Lo and TTM and it's really nice. Nice to see an SP with Tempty. Two of the better quickies as well. I thought the returning game today would either be Tempty or Magic #. Now, hopefully Bonus returns soon.

I thought the sunglasses thing with Drew was funny and unexpected.

Bart sucked today for obvious reasons.

Enjoyable show.

Tempty:  Yay!  Temptation! :P

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the $4000+ jewelry in Temptation. I about fell out of my chair when they showed the price!

Nobody has mentioned it because $4,000+ jewelry in Temptation has not been uncommon over the last couple of seasons.

Cliffy:  What's up with the remix of the car cue for a bedroom set?  I thought Hans was a goner when Gereshom whiffed the windchime clock.  Fortunately, Gereshom got lucky on the voice recorder.  I figured that voice recorder would be somewhere between $40-$50, so $45 was clearly a safe guess when you have only $5 to spare.  Bad camerawork during this game.

Sidey:  Yay!  Side By Side in the first half! :P Good to see this game get an increase in playing this season.  Better than another damn playing of Squeeze Play or Double Prices.  Now it would be nice if they've ramp up the playings of Check Game, too.

One-Bid #4:  Good to see Drew model a one-bid prize.  A very pleasant surprise to see him wearing the last pair of sunglasses.

TTM:  Hey, Adam, I thought I said cool it with the car games in slots 1 and 4.  But WOW!  Alyssa won it with the right price being in the eighth position!

Hi-Lo:  I'd expect evil setups like this when the game is played for a car, but not for a pair of cheapo motorcycles.  $8.79 for trash bags is just atrocious.  The ending for this segment was even more atrocious.  There had to be an obvious edit here, since Todd97 did say in chat that the prices of the shampoo and toaster sticks were revealed.

Pushy:  Good to see this game last.  Hell, it's good to see this game instead of Squeeze Play or Double Prices.  The console alone is at least $4,000, so I knew that $4,537 and $3,945 were definitely wrong.  The other four prices were all reasonable guesses.

Lineup:  I'd say this was probably one of the best game lineups we've had in months.  Yeah, I know, I've got a beef about the car games always being in slots 1 and 4... but one of those car games was Temptation!

SC #1:  "Debra, do you like working out?"  "No!"  Finally, a contestant who is honest about not liking something. :-D

SC #2:  LOL!  The billboard in that second stock photo of NYC advertised "Hollywood Squares" on CBS 2... and that show has been off the air for 5 years!  I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that yet in this thread, but we had a field day with it in the chatroom.

My showcase bids:
Gym/boat--$29,307
New York--$14,007

Yes, I was at the taping.  I'll repeat a few things I said in chat plus some other tidbits I remember.

This was my first and so far, my only, trip to see a TPIR taping.  I had a blast and didn't care if I got called down.  In fact, I was secretly hoping not to be called because I just wanted to watch the entire process.

First...I need to thank everyone who put effort into the "So you are going to a taping" thread.  Because of all the information in there, I knew exactly what to expect, when to show up, etc.  As a result, I got a front row seat and enjoyed the view.

The audience was overbooked for this taping.  From the front of the bench area, I could hear the announcements in the background apologizing to the remaining people waiting for their numbers to be called.

After entering the studio and taking my seat, my first gasp was at the blue doors.  There was a slight crack between the bottom of the doors and the floor.  Since the sightline at my seat was just at ground level with the stage, I could see flashing background lights in the floor's reflection.  I knew what was back there. :)

Temptation - After the doors open with the car, I watched all the stagehands go to work setting up this game. They had to set up the red curtain areas on both sides of the stage (for the "gifts") and wheel out the price prop.  Whoever said TPIR is a well-oiled machine is absolutely correct.

After the game, Drew came and said to the audience, "I'll tell you something that Kathy doesn't want me to share.  Hardly anyone ever wins the car.  The four prizes are a sure bet, and it is rare that someone takes it."

Cliffhangers - I was holding up 45 for that last prize, and I'd love to take credit for it.  However, I think the guy was looking at his group of friends instead.  I actually got to see Hans go DOWN the mountain after they broke for commercial. Drew mentioned there was a recent taping where Hans got all the way to 25.

Side By Side - I saw the stagehands bringing the prop out during the commercial.  I could see the 28 and 38 and guessed "3828" without even seeing the prize.

That's Too Much - Here's where I first noticed some editing.  When Alyssa got on stage, the first thing she said was that she needed to thank Drew for leaving her a $100 tip at a restaurant about three years ago.  It was a nice moment and they had about 20-30 seconds of conversation before Drew revealed the car.  During the commercial afterwards, Drew asked her which particular restaurant.  She said it was the TGI Friday's in Oxnard. Drew couldn't figure out when he'd been there and asked her if she still had the receipt.  She did!

Hi Lo - This was the most evil setup I've seen.  I wasn't expecting $8 for trash bags.  (Note to self: check out the bag count first.)  Drew revealed the other two prizes as normal during the taping but those reveals were edited out.  Yes, I think the Body Splash was also more than $7.99.  Granted, this was over 3 months ago so I could be mistaken.)

Pushover - The audience was split between the 56xx or 63xx.  I would have gone for the 63xx myself, but that is a toss up.

Showcase 1 - I thought the 32K bid was over, but I was surprised at how close it actually was.  The two ladies sitting next to me felt she was very close.

Showcase 2 - Because of the crowd noise, I couldn't hear her $1 bid in the studio.

In a word, WOW!  What an experience.  Perhaps someday I'll be back in the area and can do that again. :)

So I think both edits here were to allow the extra Pushy playing....grr.

And I looked up the exact name on Google and got 7.59 - not entirely sure, but regardless it was right in there with the others.

Did anyone catch the reference to "The Producers" when Drew revealed top winner Debra's showcase price? One of my favorite musicals, and quick thinking by Drew when Sardi's came up!

Here's my problem with Drew saying things like this... some may have no clue what the hell he's referring to. I have never seen "The Producers", so I was completely lost to that reference.

Nice to see Temptation again. Although I am not liking how Drew refers to the gifts as "birthday presents." It just seems dumb. Especially when he refers to the contestant's "birthday" before showing them the car and the game they are going to play. Obviously, they have no clue they are going to play Temptation and even worse because some contestants don't know all the games.

Bart's direction, or lack thereof today, was just abyssmal. I hope the new director can handle this better.

The showcases proved something to me today. Rich should stop asking the contestants questions in the beginning of the showcase. It was funny, at least to me anyway, that she said "NO" when asked if she liked to exercise. Instead of the obvious "YES" that was wanted.

Neither have I, but I didn't see it as a problem.  I don't see any problem with not getting every reference, unless everything revolved around the reference.  It's OK for a throwaway line, though.

Neither am I, but I thought it was really the contestant's birthday.

It wasn't.  Drew's insistance on saying it was Debra's birthday is what really made it dumb.

Camera Crew: -65pts. for today

Drew (unless it was due to the horrible editing): -10pts. for not revealing the other items in Hi-Lo

TTM: Awesome rare win

According to Todd97 who was at this taping, Drew did reveal the prices in Hi-Lo. If you had read the thread.... ;-)

(yeah, I know, it's kind of hard to read all of these play-by-play commentaries)

I found the New York showcase to be odd also.  We've gone from dumb random prizes showcases to just one big long connection or prizes within a prize.  What's wrong with having skits?

Temptation:  Rats! :-(  If it would've been me, I would've walked with the gifts, especially since one of them was a bowl full of cash.
Cliff Hangers:  Good job! :-)
Side By Side:  Nice job! :-)
That's Too Much!:  Wow, actually had a winner on this one! :-o  Sorry if I've offended anyone, it's just that That's Too Much is my least favorite car game.
Hi Lo:  There's no way in heck those trash bags are that expensive!  About the other two items not being revealed, it sorta looked like there was an edit after the price of the trash bags was revealed.
Push Over:  One number too far - ouch!
Showcases:  Just once I like to see bidding $1 not work in the showcase.  That'd really be cool if the person that the contestant who bid $1 thought was over was actually close enough to win both showcases!

Pretty good show overall, IMHO.

I remember when that happened sometime in the late '90s. One contestant bid something like $20000 on a cruise showcase (which seemed kind of high in those days), and turned out not to be over, much to the shock of the opposing contestant, who had played the risky $1 bid.

I KNEW IT HAPPENED!

...Sorry. I haven't been watching the show all that much lately, and whenever I hear of a $1 Showcase bid I always thought "Hey, has a contestant gotten stupid like that?" ...And it happened.

...Wow.
==============
As for today's show...hm. Temptation is always fun, but the not-revealing of those other Hi-Lo prices would've upset me, as well.

We must have gone back in time a bit, since the green screen showed up.

This episode was intended for January 20, but because of the Inauguration, it was rescheduled to today.

Okay, it's gotta be said -- Drew looked like a complete douchebag for his entire entrance on this show.  I can't believe people actually started chanting his name after that -- it made me want to chant "Bob!"

Temptation was evil.  Making the second number a choice between 3 and 4 was bizarre.

Speaking of Temptation, they really need not to screw with its music.  The four traditional cues are a huge part of the game's charm -- it never feels right without them.

"Hey, Debra!  Do you like exercising?"  "No..."  And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why the correct way to start one of these showcases is, "This showcase begins with a complete home gym!"

That's Too Much:  What a strange, strange setup.  Has there ever been such a lowball starting price as $11,498?  Steve?

I'm pretty sure that early on, the first one or two prices were sometimes under $10,000, even though they hadn't offered a 4-digit car in several years at that point.

I remember when that happened sometime in the late '90s. One contestant bid something like $20000 on a cruise showcase (which seemed kind of high in those days), and turned out not to be over, much to the shock of the opposing contestant, who had played the risky $1 bid.

Years ago, Nick Mooneyhan had up a clip from the early '80s where somebody bid $1 in the Showcase...and the other contestant won both showcases. :)  One of the neatest clips I've ever seen.  (...or heard, actually, now that I think of it.)

I said the EXACT SAME THING to myself when I heard her answer to that. Rich did a good job of not making it more awkward than it was, but still. It just looked BAD.

Temptation: There's always that tempting cash that makes me want to take the prizes. I probably would've said 3 for the second number. I would still lose some way if I went for the car.

Cliff Hangers: For a moment, I thought we had an edit because I was yodeling along very loud that I did not hear the stopping ding. That was a lucky save; I thought the Yodelly Guy was doomed again.

One Bid 3: "A double drawer dishwasher?"

Side by Side: I just don't see how it can be 2838 in the first place...

One Bid 4: Am I supposed to laugh at Drew? I did a little.

That's Too Much!: I was thinking, "Did we just play this not too long ago? I think we're playing this game too much."

Hi-Lo: Oh, those darn bags!

One Bid 6: Oh, those darn bids from Andrew (and David)!

Push Over: Oh, how much darn time it took for Debra to push!

Showcases: Liked how they utilized both MGHS cues in the first Showcase. Speaking of HS, I laughed at seeing the H2 billboard in that 'roided New York trip. It was almost like a plug for the Chicago station. Boy, every time I see someone bid 1 on their Showcase, they always win. From browsing the thread, it looks like it has not happened 100% of the time.

The prices were revealed, as noted on page 2, but editted out of the show.

Man, I haven't seen a trip to New York City like this before.  I mean, no one has!  I only had to subtract the cash prize from the showcase to get the trip's price itself.

Temptation: YAYYYYY!!!!  :-) :-) Even though the fish bowl contained a mere $1199, It was still worth not taking a chance at the car. Poor Debra was duped in.  :-(

Cliff: Drew, Please just let Hans stop when he knows when. Gereshom saved himself from disaster after coming out big time on that Voice Recorder. Good job.

Side: Very nice.

TTM: Alyssa and I had it together. Yes!!  :-D

Hi Lo: EGAD!!! Those expensive-a** trash bags!!! Double EGAD for the shoddy editing!!  :-x

Push: Why........was.......this.......playing .......so.......slow?  :-P

Showcasea: ...and the award for most hilarious response of thwe year goes to Debra V. for giving the long-awaited answer we all wanted to hear after all the times Rich asks these crazy questions before a showcase. I really wasn't impressed with the New York super showcase. ISure, it sounded like a cool package, but it just felt a tad over-the-top. Debra F. better be glad it wasn't as worse if her $1 bid backfired.

A 2.75-star show.

A note about the New York showcase, it's probably the first time in quite some time that the prize card on the showcase podium were a specific place.  I know on the November 18, 1996 show, a card that just said "St. Croix" was used (it was a "Main Street" showcase).

Also, for those who may have missed it, here is that picture, that showed a promotion for Hollywood Squares on WCBS-TV.

This was reran today (7/17/09).  Augh, what a fail!

I missed the first two PG's, so no comment.  Failhorn at me for missing Cliffhangers AND Temptation :(

Second half featured three of the hardest games: That's Too Much! (that was actually the first time I've ever seen that game won) at 1:10 odds, Hi-Lo at 1:120 odds (although that's not counting the french toast sticks - they're definitely not $7.99), and Push-Over at 1:5 (any one of those five could have been it).

The showcases were downright ridiculous - a FRBS (freakin' random boat showcase, in case you haven't heard the terminology before) and a one-tripper (one trip but you get a lot of stuff on that trip)?  I would have just said "no thanks" and went home.

Absurdity at its finest, ladies and gentlemen.

I was so excited to see Temptation on this rerun and then let down when the proper cues weren't played after the first prize...oh well. To be expected nowadays, I suppose.
