Aye-yay-yah-yah-yah! Just when we were shaping up to have good results on the Punchboard, we learned she bailed out too soon. But not everyone is that contestant from 1992 (who gave back $5,000 and got $10,000 in return), and $5,000 is still a nice chunk of change. (And hey, $1,000 isn't bad either).

I say Tammy did the right thing by keeping the $5,000. With all the luck that's been going around TPiR land lately, those could have easily been $50 slips in those next two holes.

One Away:  I was stunned to find out that Kelsey had lost! 8-O
Grocery Game:  Nicely done! :-)
That's Too Much:  One price too soon - curses! :-(
Punch A Bunch:  $5,000 is a good haul and yet it's sad to know Amanda could've had $10,000 if she'd went for it.

Not too bad an end to the week, IMHO.

I wonder if the backdrops used for the Mazda 3 in That's Too Much will be any indication of what The New Any Number will look like when it debuts in about two  and a half weeks.  When I first saw those backdrops, a zebra or Oreo cookies came to mind.

The odds of drawing something higher than 5k on 2 punches (after the first one) is 8%, and anyways the general rule is bail on 5k no matter what. It just happens once in a great while it doesn't quite work out, we can be thankful it wasn't 25 yet.

Drew's reveal during punchy today with the 5k was very bob barker like with the build up. Hopefully one day we will see the 25k slip.

Was it just me, or did those backdrops (aside from the coloring) look exactly like the ones they always used to use in Switch?

Those backdrops have been used since roughly the debut of the current (soon-to-be replaced) Any Number board, and their flipside has been used for two prize games and other games, such as Line em Up and Barker's Marker$/Make Your Mark over the years.

Boy oh Boy Virginia and Bryon were "two geniuses" weren't they?  Thank God neither made the Showcase.

Part 1:  I somehow got a sinking feeling that the "5" was correct.  But she played it textbook.  Just wasn't her day.

Part 2:  THINKING CHALLENGED PEOPLE in the middle of the row unite!!  Unable-Unwilling to think for themselves, Tammy puts them both out of their misery for now.  Tammy, great job blocking out the idiots.  You never, ever $1 someone if you arent the last bidder in the sequence.  And Tammy, the TPIR God's will reward you for your great community service.   :-D  She won a VERY EASY Most Expensive Set-Up.

Part 3:  God protects babies and fools.  How Bryon won Grocery Game-Revenge of the Turtles is beyond me.

Showcase Showdown Uno:  Tammy or Kelsey, please come forward.

Part 4:  Virginia got what was coming to her.

Part 5:  A "fair set up" in That's Too Much.  Another great contestant,  but it just wasn't her lucky day.

Part 6:  The Contestant of the Day in my opinion.  I'm glad she hit 5k in Punch-A-Bunch.  The 10k slip popping up was horrible luck.  She played it "textbook savvy" by stopping at 5k.

Showcase Showdown Dos:  Anybody but Virginia, please.

Showcases:  THE TPIR GOD'S REWARD TAMMY.  THE TPIR GOD'S LIKE IT WHEN YOU "BLOCK OUT AN IDIOT".

Good show today, Drew was excellent, especially in Punch a Bunch

But not everyone is that contestant from 1992 (who gave back $5,000 and got $10,000 in return

I believe that was actually 1995 or 1996  :-)

"If you're scared, buy a dog."

That was the first thing that popped into my head after that playing of Punch-a-Bunch. Actually, this is one of the most memorable playings of this game I've seen in quite a while.

Actually, I would've bailed after picking that slip myself. The odds are against the contestant when they pick the $5k slip.

Good golly, That's too Much! was winnable again!  :-D

I see they've started using the jib camera to shoot Most Expen$ive.  It makes the logo look a lot better.

Closing Door #4 after Double Prices was lost was a nice touch.

It was nice to see some old prize backdrops come back during That's Too Much!, but I don't think I like what they did to them...it looked like they created negatives of them or something.

Props to Kathy for making both That's Too Much! and most of Punch a Bunch's small prizes winnable.

Speaking of Punch a Bunch...man, was that a heartbreaker.  Totally the right decision, but still...that has to hurt.

Who the hell is Samantha Brown, and why did her showcase only have two trips?  (I know that's nothing new, but no matter how many times they try it, it doesn't work.)

And Tammy, the TPIR God's will reward you for your great community service.   :-D  She won a VERY EASY Most Expensive Set-Up.

Part 3:  God protects babies and fools.  How Bryon won Grocery Game-Revenge of the Turtles is beyond me.

Showcases:  THE TPIR GOD'S REWARD TAMMY.  THE TPIR GOD'S LIKE IT WHEN YOU "BLOCK OUT AN IDIOT".

I have a hard time believing there are any gods that would spend this much time focusing on The Price Is Right.

Drew hosted Punch-a-Bunch probably the best he's ever done it today.  If only Amanda had punched that hole first...

I think Drew telling her she was the luckiest contestant all day kinda jinxed her at the Showcases.  (Well, I kinda saw the overbid coming from a mile away, but still...)

I especially didn't understand it today.  The first showcase had a gazillion prizes for no apparent reason, including a trip.  Why not just move that trip from the first showcase, which had too many prizes for no good reason to begin with, to the second showcase, which desperately needed a third trip?  Would've been just that simple....

It continues the tradition of obscure special guests. How fondly I recall the appearance this season by the Grammy nominee I've never heard of. That seemed like a fairly certain overbid for a two trip Showcase. Even if one of the two were an African Safari I'm not sure it would have gotten up to what Amanda bid.

Amanda's bailout was totally sensible. I don't feel bad for her at all. It's amazing to see three amounts that high in the same game with what's happened recently. However, I didn't really like Drew's initial chat with Amanda. Things like the comments about the Jump Wings seemed like remarking that it was adorable that they let women in the military.

About a week ago, a poster asked why it's so bad for someone to make a +$1 bid when they aren't the last bidder. The second One Bid today was Exhibit A. The late bidder had no incentive to avoid one-upping everyone else.

Why I am suddenly fascinated by SportStuff inflatables?

That was a very well-played Grocery Game.

I think back in the day that car backdrop was used a lot in Spelling Bee. I don't remember specifically, but I know it's been used. Did they repaint them or are they just different on both sides?

To me it looked like back in the day the scene shop would construct "companion" set pieces to serve as backdrops for newly-created games. The ones behind the TTM Mazda were probably the original companion pieces for the 1986 red/gold Any Number game prop. Another example I can think of is Magic Number which had these flats fashioned for it.

As for the new paint scheme on the A# car backdrops: I imagine we won't see them unless the car placed in front of them is a bright/stark color & not black or white otherwise it won't stand out as well.

Everyone's said everything already. I'll just say this - Punch A Bunch was a heartbreaker but hosted incredibly well by Drew, all the setups were winnable today, and this show was quite fun to watch up until the showcases, which were a disaster. Between five completely random prizes in the first, just two trips in the second, and a pretty listless guest appearance, today was not a good showcase day in general. At least the pricing game portion was more fun than it's been!

Timings:
One Away (5) - 5:05
Most Expensive (3.5) - 2:59
Grocery Game (5) - 4:19
Double Prices (3) - 2:14
That's Too Much! (5)- 3:14
Punch A Bunch (5.5)- 5:40
Total (27): 23:31

Okay, the second taping I attended (my seventh) was an unlucky one due to me oversleeping and being lazy to return to the studio, becoming 143rd at the studio after being first in line outside overnight. This meant I had to be near the back instead of the college group from Boston up front who would have supported me and vice versa. Oh well.

One Away: I was looking around to see if I could see the Mighty Sound Effects Lady, but I couldn't. Hearing those horns rocked the studio. Unfortunately, the decision to change the price was a hard one, and the worse thing is that after play, Drew told Kelsey that he could see the 5 before it was revealed.

Between the two segments there was at least a four-minute break, including the monitors showing a RESET 3:00 timer.

Most Expen$ive: I did not know about the new reveal they were talking about in chat. I had a feeling the game table's price was kinda old. But it was still good to see a win on a newly-designed game.

During one of the breaks, Drew mentioned one of his favorite snacktimes: Original Doritos with Lay's Ranch Dip. Odd thing to try; Drew would prefer that than the Cool Ranch Doritos. It took me a few weeks after taping to try it. Not bad.

One Bid 3: Now I know there was some reshoots of Manuela bouncing on those inflatables during the break.

Grocery Game: Yes, the turtle theme. After play, there was discussion about how Scott came up with the turtle theme and where he got the products.

Double Prices: For the audience, the price choices were also plastered on the back of the game so they can play along.

That's Too Much!: I was hoping we wouldn't have another That's Two Ninth! or a That's Too Eighth! in our midsts. We didn't.

One Bid 6: Now That's a prize I want!

Punch-a-Bunch: As soon as I saw the $5000 slip, I told the person next to me that I hope I don't see a "Brian" moment. The whole audience groaned like the show was skunked when Drew revealed the $10,000 slip.

Showcase Showdown 2: I can see myself bouncing like a kid during the Dig.

Showcases: I still don't know the significance of Samantha Brown..... and it's also the very first time I saw a red OVER displayed on a podium.

Well, the same things that happened on Monday's taping (Wednesday's Skunking) happened here as well. Day three on Tuesday.

Whammy, how were the audience-facing prices rendered? Were they duplicates of the tags we see on screen, or were they crude cue cards taped to the back of the prop?

Unfortunately, the decision to change the price was a hard one, and the worse thing is that after play, Drew told Kelsey that he could see the 5 before it was revealed.

You could.

I'm watching in Hi-Def on a 42 inch TV, and when they revealed the first number in the prize, you could see a hint of the blue #5 in the second price.

It probably wasn't viewable from the audience, but onscreen at home, or anyone standing next to the game could see which way the wind was blowing for that second number before the reveal happened.

As much as I hate to say it...that's another reason for the show to switch to digital displays right there.

Think of all the times the 'cover' has failed to actually cover the price for games like Ten Chances, Grand Game, and Golden Road...

Can't (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php/topic,6219.0.html) forget (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php/topic,7678.0.html) Penny Ante (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php/topic,8014.0.html).

Penny Ante is a game I'd love to see rebuilt with modern technology and unretired.

I rewatched this episode today. Indeed, in One Away, I could see the tip of the blue 5 after the first digit was revealed. And I think the contestant could see it too. After the first digit was revealed, she started shaking her head as if to say, "No, I don't have it."

The way to fix that would be to make the bottom of One Away an LCD display.

They could probably still have the sliding back effect on the monitor, but it wouldn't give the numbers away.

You'd have to keep the old fashioned trilons up top, though.

Using slightly smaller numbers would work, too.

The current One Away board wasn't really designed for five-digit cars when it was built...the reveal can handle a 1 for the first digit without difficulty, but trying to add a dollar sign when the first digit is 2+ makes the reveal a little too crunched, and sometimes numbers can peek out.
