And from watching a video on him, Don Drysdale too, he so wanted to see him again. RIP to a true original. Outside of his time at the helm of the Dodgers, which speaks for itself, I'll remember him most for the tumble he took at the 2001 ASG courtesy of a wayward shattered bat down the left field line personally. An absolute classic moment that has been replayed many times since over the years, and no doubt stands to get more now in his memory.

Tommy Lasorda was also was a fan of bull riding. When the PBR came to California he made it an effort to go to performances and give the riders a pep talk before the events, to help get them motivated. His encouragement to athletes extended even past baseball.

Two other country music stars have passed, all of them having No. 1 presence on the Billboard country charts:

* Jan. 1 – Misty Morgan, one half of a husband-and-wife with Jack Blanchard, died of cancer at age 75. Jack and Misty had a No. 1 country and surprise No. 23 pop hit in the spring of 1970 with "The Tennessee Birdwalk."

http://www.noise11.com/news/country-star-misty-morgan-dies-aged-75-20210103

* Jan. 8 – Jamie O'Hara, who died of cancer at age 70. He was also half of a duo, the O'Kanes, in the late 1980s, their biggest hit coming in the spring of 1987 with the No. 1 hit "Can't Stop My Heart From Lovin' You." He also wrote many songs, including the No. 1 hits "Older Women" by Ronnie McDowell (1981), "Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout the Good Ol' Days)" by the Judds (1986) and "Man To Man" by Gary Allan (2003).

Along with Ed Bruce's passing, looks like country music stands to lose more of our favorite legends in 2021. RIP to them all.

Title: Re: 2021 Obituaries Thread
Post by: SeaBreeze341 on January 22, 2021, 08:32:40 PM
To be considered vaccinated, one has to receive two doses, with a minimum timeline of 14 days apart.  You can't receive a flu shot or any similar vaccine during the process.  I don't know how far along he was, but assuming he was shown getting the vaccine, he still had the second shot before he was through.

Really, I don't know what else was going on with the 86-year old to where he is no longer with us.  The news of his passing just broke today, so I'm going to let the time pass before the causes are made public.  I'll leave the speculation to those that handle it, but whatever happened, the MLB community, if not America and Planet Earth lost a true icon, a role that he had before, during, and after his Hall of Fame Career.

Hank Aaron will always be the home run king to me as well.  What's on paper/documented is what it is, but in his playing days what he did was more than spectacular.  The constant pressure of just playing the sport, let alone going for and eventually passing Babe Ruth was phenomenal.  He handled it with such class and took it.  I can't imagine that happening today.

I remember when Hank did a commercial encouraging Barry to "ride off into the sunset" after he broke McGwire's single-season record, and Bonds was having none of it.  Eventually Aaron was classy about it, IMO after the 2007 season.  More than Bug Selig, that's for sure!

RIP, Mr. Aaron.

Biggest hits were songs like "Honeycomb" and "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine."

Bit of trivia here: Jimmie Rodgers shared the same name as the Father of Country Music – also named Jimmie Rodgers. In fact, the younger Jimmie was born just a few months after the older singer (nicknamed "The Singing Brakeman") died of tuberculosis in 1933.  I'm sure there were a few who did a double-take when, in the mid-1950s, this handsome 20s-something lad was singing rockabilly music, whose sound was in direct contrast to the legendary recordings of the late 1920s and 1930s by the elder Rodgers. According to Wikipedia, the younger Rodgers used his middle initial – F. – in his songwriting credits to distinguish himself.

He was also one of the few country music artists ever to have success on what's now Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. That's how much appeal country music of the latter half of the 1950s had in the mainstream.

Another country music legend, gone.

Man, that was a tough January for the obits, the last third of it in particular. We're nearly double the pace of 2020 so far. MLB's Home Run King to many, Mrs. Rogers, CNN's biggest talk show personality, one of the last Golden Age of Hollywood starlets, a Bond Girl, half of a legendary magic duo, the biggest producer to come out of the Brill Building, one of the Top 10 MLB managers known for Ultra Slim-Fast commercials, just to name a few. It proves to live every day like its a gift, since you don't know when you or somebody else pass into a world that's 100% alien to the one we're in presently.

I may not have been a fan of Saved By The Bell when TBS was airing reruns for several years after it ended on NBC. I'd have to agree with what people have been saying that whether you liked the character or not, Screech was the heart of the show. There may have been bad blood between him and his co-stars over the ghostwritten tell-all book from the late 2000s that he apologized for years later, along with making peace with one of them. I do hope that the revival on Peacock will pay tribute to him in their upcoming second season.

Not even 2/3 into the new month (albeit a short month) too.  However, the guy wasn't feeling well toward the end.  Sadly, him not feeling well was a combination of emotions & health.

A couple of my most memorable moments from Saved By The Bell as it relates to Screech include the rare times that he was actually serious.  In serious, I mean not his over the top personality that drove Lisa crazy, but when he acted "out of character" and respected.  After all, he did finish first in his class.
One time he was ready to fight Zach but as a true friend, Zach wasn't coming to blows with Screech (like Zach did with Slater).  In the end, Zach and Screech made up and that was that.

The bigger one comes during one of the several times that Screech annoyed Lisa, but for good reason.  Screech barely edged out Jessie for valedictorian; despite that, the former showed true class and opted to pass the honor to Ms. Spano.  Screech pleaded for Lisa to keep it a secret, but inadvertently broke away from his well wishes after Jessie made fun of him.  Ms. Turtle ended up doubling down in a way and ended up spilling the beans, which led to the eventual top student receiving his well-deserved honor.

Say what you will about his character, but Screech was still a classy person, when he didn't really need to be.  It's unfortunate how things spiraled out of control for Dustin Diamond, and it's very sad to see it come to this.  I too hope he's found peace, and he no longer has to suffer anymore.

For me, I never really got over him insisting 18 years ago that Donovan McNabb was being overhyped as a quarterback simply because of his status as an African-American, and thus never took anything he said seriously thereafter (to his credit, of course, McNabb handled that situation with grace and proved Limbaugh wrong in that regard by leading Philadelphia to the NFC championship game that season and Super Bowl XXXIX the following season).

While this one is a more "local" entry, anyone who was in the greater Albany NY area over the years may recognize the name.  Even after his retirement as an anchor, he did commercials in the area for several more years.  Note also that, while the website now refers to cbs6albany, this is the station with call letters WRGB, which is also known by many beyond the area as the first television station (dating all the way back to 1928).

Note - on a more national note - he was featured as an anchor (basically a clip of him doing the news) in the movie Sneakers.

Director and producer Richard Donner (https://deadline.com/2021/07/richard-donner-dead-superman-lethal-weapon-director-1234786372/), who helmed some of the most iconic movies of the 1970s and 1980s, including the Christopher Reeve-starring Superman, The Goonies, and the Mel Gibson-Danny Glover buddy cop series Lethal Weapon. TBH, I wasn't even aware that he was still alive.  RIP.

We've lost a ton of legends & great people recently.  Their legacies will forever live on.

As for Matiss Kivlenieks, this one hurts as it could have been avoided.  I made mention to how we lost several people due to the fact that they've left us after decades of success & their own stories.  With Columbus's goalie, he had a lot of living to do, but just bad, fatal luck changed that.

There have been some discussions on banning fireworks.  I respect that.  Obviously it's a no for me in terms of official showings of fireworks, but I believe that people should have to obtain a license in order to operate their own private shows featuring fireworks in one's backyard or front yard.

Given the wear and tear a wrestler's body no doubt goes through over the decades, it would not be surprising if Orndorff was suffering from CTE, and he's probably far from the only one.  Interesting fact:  had Andre the Giant not been physically able to face Hulk Hogan in the WrestleMania III main event, Vince McMahon's backup plan would have been a final Hogan-Orndorff match to settle their previous long running feud, hence why Mr. Wonderful did not appear at the event otherwise.

That's really interesting.....I wonder if that'd have been also a backup in case Andre didn't wanna do business. Hogan had claimed he and Vince weren't sure he would in his book. May or may not have been true knowing Hogan, but....was out there. Hannibal from the Hannibal TV did an interview with Paul a few years ago too re: CTE, and he said in a video posted today Paul was clearing declining health even then, so it woulda been an issue for a while evidently.

Cinderella Guitarist Jeff LaBar dead at 58 (https://www.thewrap.com/jeff-labar-guitarist-for-80s-glam-rock-band-cinderella-dies-at-58/).  Similar to the professional wrestlers (at one point a couple years ago), seems like a lot of the members from the 80s Hair Band Era are dying off.

I ran into Mr. Wonderful over a quarter century ago in Atlanta.  This was not too long after the Horsemen ended his career.  In reality, his was at the end and it was a segment or storyline to cover for the fact that he was done as an active full-time wrestler.  Naturally he was in pretty good shape & you couldn’t tell.  That’s the case with football players and other athletes where they in better shape post-career than most at their peak.

The CTE thing is tough and sad; his health had been declining for some time.  While these guys know what they’re signing up for, it’s tough to see all the legends go.  Fortunately, there is more awareness as it relates to the health and safety of everyone involved.

While Hogan vs Orndroff would’ve paled in comparison to Hogan vs Andre, that would’ve been a rather good & underrated main event at WM III.  It would’ve come full circle, given both their teammates from the original Wrestlemania fought in the previous year’s event.

Speaking of which, I’m glad Paul, along with Piper, Mr. T, and Hogan got together for the 30th anniversary of Wrestlemania, hard to believe we’re nearly a decade removed from that 30th annual event.

Not as known as a lot of other poker professionals, but the 83-year old bracelet winner achieved a feat that only about a half handful of people have earned (really less than that), winning the WSOP Main Event in 1999.  It was his only World Series of Poker title, but he has had some success on tour, including nearly winning it a decade prior.

Okay, for me personally, it's been a very good weekend, but in terms of people I grew up admiring, not good.  Bobby Bowden's passing wasn't surprising at all.  I believe he made his pancreatic cancer diagnosis public earlier this summer.  The former FSU legend lived longer than a full life, had the 4th most wins in the NCAA, & 2 National Titles with Florida State.  Along with Nebraska, one of the best programs in the 90s.  Former player Deion Sanders put it best in terms of the character of Coach Bowden, when referring to young men having a father figure when (and if) they grew up without one.

I think I forgot Markie Post had cancer.  I remember hearing the news back when, but then I was a bit surprised upon her passing.  A tribute to her and Charles Robinson (and even Harry Anderson) would be awesome if a revival happens.

Dee Tee's death is the second one from Kool & The Gang within a year (Ronald Bell).  Not sure what was going on with him that cost him his life this weekend, but what a career.  Provided a lot of material over the years/decades.  Dennis lost his daughter more than 20 years ago.

This is a week old, but some WWF (now WWE) wrestling fans may remember Dominic DeNucci from the 1960s through early 1980s.

DeNucci passed away Aug. 13 at age 89. He won several championships for the WWF, most notably tag team championships. DeNucci's most recent was with Dino Bravo in 1978 (long before Bravo proclaimed himself the "World's Strongest Man").

Don Everly (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/music-news/don-everly-country-rock-duo-the-everly-brothers-dies-at-84-1235001251/), of the country rock-and-roll duo The Everly Brothers, passed away Saturday at age 84. No cause of death was reported.

In country music, the roster of surviving stars who were active and had great success as far back as the 1950s just got that much smaller.

Mitchell Torok, who was born in 1929 and had a No. 1 hit in December 1953 with his crossover hit "Caribbean," might just be the earliest surviving No. 1 artist. (All of the 1940s No. 1 country artists are deceased.)

And it appears the only other surviving artists who had a No. 1 hit in the 1950s are Jerry Lee Lewis ("Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls Of Fire" in 1957-1958) and Stonewall Jackson ("Waterloo" in 1959).

You'd have to go to 1961 to find the next artist who still survives and had a country No. 1 hit: Leroy Van Dyke and "Walk On By." (He was on a local radio program recently commenting about the Iowa State Fair. He's in his 90s now but still as active as ever.) Bill Anderson (yep, that guy who hosted several game shows in the 1970s and 1980s)Connie Smith, Warner Mack, Loretta Lynn, Jeannie C. Riley and Jerry Lee Lewis are among the 1960s No. 1 country artists who still are with us.

With the recent death of Tom T. Hall, I was thinking about it today how now there are starting to become fewer surviving country artists from as recent as the 1970s. I thought of 1970 in particular, the year Tom T. had his first No. 1 hit, "A Week in a Country Jail." That year, there were X artists who had No. 1 hits: David Houston, Tom T. Hall, Sonny James, Merle Haggard, Jack Blanchard and Misty Morgan, Charley Pride, Marty Robbins, Dave Dudley, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams Jr., Ray Price, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Lynn Anderson. Of those, just four survive: Blanchard (Morgan, his wife, passed away in January), Bocephus (Williams), "the Killer" (Lewis) and the "Coal Miner's Daughter" (Lynn).

Moral: Enjoy the artists while you can. It's been a rough time for classic country fans, to be sure. Sorry for the long post but thought I'd weigh in.

RIP Ed Asner and thanks for all the good memories in MTM and all your other work.

The original newsroom members at WJM are all together again. I'm speaking of 1970-1973, prior to Betty White joining the cast, which in order IIRC were Ted, Mary, Valerie, Chloris, Gavin and now Ed ... the original six from the early years. Georgette Engel (who played Ted Knight's wife) also has since died. Only pre-Betty White semi-regular left is Joyce Bulifant (Gavin McLeod's wife) and – as I just saw – John Amos (the weatherman, Gordon Howard).

And to think that there is at least one 1960s TV show – "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" – where the primary characters (Mark Miller and Pat Crowley, and the four boys who played their sons) are all still living; some supporting cast members have passed (Dub Taylor and Bonnie Franklin among them), but "... Daisies" is believed to be the earliest show where all the primary cast members are still living. How crazy is that?

Thanks for the memories, Ed! Take care of the newsroom for us.

Side note: I hope this renews interest in "Lou Grant" reruns on TV. Lots of relevant newsroom issues that I think the public needs to see.

Yet another situation where the death of a star leaves me in shock but would not have been stunned at all if it was disclosed.  I was surprised here because Norm was seen on SNL's 40th Anniversary special within that timeframe, though over 6.5 years ago.

I think I remember reading something on his health not too long ago, but I likely forgot about it.  Also, I saw him every-so-often, but given how time flies, those appearances could've been no later than 4-5 years ago.  Regardless, a rather underrated actor.  Pretty close to Adam Sandler & Dave Letterman.  Glad he returned to Saturday Night Live after his exit that wasn't on the best terms.  At the time it seemed like an eternity when he left midway through Season 23, but it was about a year and a half upon returning to host in Season 25 soon after his segment with Chevy Chase & Dennis Miller on Weekend Update on the 25th Anniversary special.

Tough loss, and while it's been a couple of weeks, same goes for Ed Asner.  Losing too many legends; it's not cool when you tune into something to see someone, and you won't be able to do that anymore. That's just the way it goes, sadly.

Not to curse anyone, but I noted sometime back on another blogboard that in time, we will get a headline noting that the last remaining Rolling Stones member or the last surviving Beatle had passed. (Happily, Paul and Ringo, and Mick and Keith are still with us.)

As they said in the old country song by Tracy Lawrence, "Time marches on ... time marches on."

Didn't he also do the 1977-1978 season of "Truth"?

I wonder, had "What's My Line?" been revived (or continued into the late 1970s), would Alan have assumed the announcer's role? How would he have done proclaiming, "And now let's all play, 'What's My Line?'"

I'm guessing with Alan's passing that all of Goodson-Todman's New York-era announcers have now died. Sorry to hear ... RIP.

I often thought that Johnny Gilbert could qualify in terms of living New York based G-T announcers.  Probably not to a great degree.  I think the original PIR might have moved out of the original studio around the time Johnny took over from Don Pardo.

Nevertheless, RIP Alan Kalter.  Definitely an icon growing up during the USA era, prior to TLS with Dave.

Veteran NFL official Carl Madsen passes away  (https://www.nfl.com/news/longtime-nfl-official-carl-madsen-dies-at-age-71)

Mr. Madsen died on the way home following his work at Music City working the Chiefs/Titans game.  While not as known as guys like Mike Pereira, Ed Hochuli, and Gene Steratore, he was very-well respected.  One of the best in terms of replay; earlier in life, Carl served in the military.  To be more accurate, he was part of the US Air Force in the 70s.

The list of pre-1960 country singers who still survive is growing very short.

Stonewall Jackson, best known for his 1959 No. 1 country hit “Waterloo,” passed over the weekend at age 89. He appeared for 50 years on the Grand Oke Opry and had a bunch of other hits, including a cover of Lobo’s 1971 pop hit “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo.”

Yes, Stonewall was his real name, after the Confederate Army general.

Going back to Stonewall Jackson for a moment, apparently there is just one country music singer from the 1950s with a No. 1 hit on the Billboard country chart that still survives: Jerry Lee Lewis, who had two in 1957 and 1958, "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls Of Fire." "The Killer" is now age 85.

Otherwise, you'd have to go up to 1961 to find the next earliest-surviving singer with a No. 1 country hit: Leroy Van Dyke, who at age 92 still performs; he was best known for "Walk On By," a 19-week No. 1 hit that extended into early 1962. The future game show host that was a country singer, Bill Anderson (now age 84), would be third on the list. He reached No. 1 for the first time in October 1962 with "Mama Sang a Song."

Treasure them while you can, and Stonewall's death, along with others this year (former Monkee Michael Nesmith being the latest example), is a reminder of how time goes so fast and how we're only here for a little while.

This one wasn't listed four months ago at the time of his death, but it involves another country music performer, this one from the 1980s. (And I apologize if this subverts any rules about the latest after someone's passing a notice can be listed.)

Razzy Bailey, whom some of you may remember for songs like "Lovin' Up a Storm," "I Keep Coming Back," "Friends," "Midnight Hauler" and "She Left Love All Over Me" (all No. 1 hits between the fall of 1980 and the spring of 1982), passed away Aug. 4, age 82. One of his earliest big breaks was as a songwriter, on the 1976 Dickey Lee hit "9,999,999 Tears."

I noted a week or so earlier, with the death of 1950s/1960s star Stonewall Jackson, that almost all of the 1950s stars are gone. In the past several years, it's really encroached upon the 1980s.

As I said earlier, please enjoy them while you can.
