This program should not be offering a contestant $200,000, much less $100,000, for simply picking six grocery items in order from least expensive to most expensive.

Pay the Rent was such a softball setup, reminded me of the gimme win from Military Week some while back. They WANTED that one won. You could have set up the house from low item to high item and won it.

Now we know what the hype of the week was.

Agreed 100%. If the exact same set of items were used in Hole in One the contestant would only get $500.

Why does this game have to be either super-easy or mega-hard with very little leeway in-between?

Good show today.
Nice of Drew to mention the record for most won overall in one show in daytime TPIR history. We had our 4th winner ever in PtR (1st since 8/1/15) It was the 1st time since 7/4/14 where putting the Grocery items from least to most expensive would had won.
Jody becomes the 2nd biggest winner in Daytime TPIR.

You know what? I really thought it was just going to be a raised Pay the Rent from the spoilers. Having a bonus a la Shell Game is actually kind of clever as a one-off.

Sure, Pay the Rent was TOO generous for $200K. 11 possible solutions does that. However, I'll argue that if that win hadn't have happened, the only notable thing about this show is That's Too Much, which coincidentally had the 3rd and 4th ARPS and the same win position as 12/24/2015.

Also, to top it off: According to my Excel spreadsheet, if we had 5 perfect shows, the total would be $4,854,473.

And that's that. See you Monday, as I try not to get angry at PtR.

While I agree, How is a free $200k Plinko chip different.

I mean, the Pay the Rent was kinda telegraphed in big, bold letters, but it was still pretty cool to have won, especially with Jody being unemployed.

Meanwhile, where did they get those trips from? In recent weeks, any international trip has been floating around $10,000... as a minimum. Madagascar is literally on the other side of the planet, and only cost $7100?  Beijing at $7800?

I seem to be one of the few that genuinely enjoyed $200,000 Rent. I enjoyed everything for the most part this week.

The only minor problem I have was the cheapo cars with $5,000 added on. I mean, come on. It's not Dream Car Week. However, I would've killed for more cars in the high-20s, low 30s, some 40s.

So this is the record-breaking show that the show was referring to...

To give away the cash equivalent of all the prizes won, plus $200,000 in Pay the Rent, is nothing short of amazing. I doubt we'll ever see one-day winnings this high again, but of course, we could be wrong next year.

It is not.  I am probably the only person here who thinks Plinko is overrated and played too much anyway.

Also:  I am a big fan of Rent at $100K when set up properly with limited answers and a proper puzzle to solve (3-5 answers).

No you're not. I also feel the same about Plinko.

I agree with you about Pay the Rent as well. A fair setup with 3-5  ways to win is not too much to ask.

They wanted Side By Side won, there was no way that was going to be the cheaper of the two.

Good lord, that video game package and the overbids on the one-bid.

We went from having expensive-ass TVs to cheap TVs back to insanely expensive TVs again.  Weird, huh?

Pay the Rent was ridiculous, as others have said, way too easy or way too hard and there was almost no way these products were going to be set up to cause a loss.  But having only one way to set them up is ridiculous too.  Having two or three solutions, plus "it may not be the wisest decision to put the cheapest item in the mailbox" as part of the instructions to the player, might allow for enough wins to keep the game exciting but enough losses to save budget.

I really like the idea of what they did as an add-on for this shot, but I think they need to reduce just how much of it they do, but expand it for every single episode going forward.

...that is to say, every single prize won on The Price is Right, from the one-bids, to the regular game prizes, to cash wins, to mid-level prizes like the middle prize in Any Number to the along the way prizes in Golden Road or More or Less, to the showcases, there should be cash given to the contestant equal to what their tax burden will be.

I could even see the ad for it.

"Hello, I'm Drew Carey, host of The Price is Right...but before I was a game show host, I was a comedian.  And like most comedians, I know when it's time to let a joke die."

*cut to every single time Drew has said something to the effect of "bad news...you're going to have to pay tax and title on this brand new car!"*

"And that's why, as a game show first, we'll be paying the taxes on every prize won by any of our contestants, for the rest of the life of The Price is Right, and on all other game shows or reality shows CBS airs!"

Follow this up with attempts to get the laws changed that prizes won, of any sort - game show winnings, lottery winnings, slot machine jackpots, etc. become exempt from taxation as they are in most other countries (Canada, Mexico, Europe, all have exemptions carved out for this, why are we behind in this regard?)  Have CBS be the ones leading the charge, suddenly every time someone wins some life-changing sum of money, they think "wow, I would have had to give a third of this to the government, but now I don't, thanks CBS!"  News stories reporting on record Powerball or Mega Millions numbers would end up referencing just why the law got changed.  Someone hits a $2,000 jackpot in a casino, they get told "oh, there's no tax cut taken out any more, CBS changed that."  There'd be so much good will for that network, it would pay huge dividends.  Any money used to bribe enough politicians to ram it through Congress would be paid back tenfold if not more.

So after 11 1/2 years (Season 35 premiere), the record for most given away in an episode is broken.  I'm surprised it took this long.

I'm still hoping for the day they offer full-size Cadillac XTSs (or whatever the equivalent to the old Deville is) or the successor Lincoln to the former Town Car is once again, or they offer the new Lincoln Continental. Or even a guzzied-up Chrysler 300 (why no Imperial?).

How awesome would that be? (Not to say offering high-end Mercedes-Benzes or BMWs or Porsches is a bad thing ... but I'd love to see a high-end domestic luxury vehicle that is not a mid-sized or crossover or sports car be offered.

But that's a discussion for another week.

Meantime, there is NO rule saying that Pay the Rent cannot be set up for a win with a solution of least-to-greatest in ascending order. That was simply the solution today, but it doesn't mean that it will be the next playing.

Today, it worked for the Jody and it was a well-deserved win. Just enjoy the victory, folks! :)

Offering the cash equivalent for prizes won was also too gimmicky for my taste, but at least the lineup had a lot more variety than the all cash show.

Congratulations to Jody for the huge haul, but man was Pay the Rent generous. As long as the vitamins were put in the attic there were very few ways to mess up.

Speaking of records, I count $259,020 in cash.  That's the most cash given away in a single episode (beating whatever was given away in a previous Big Money Week episode with a $210,000 Cliff Hangers win), right?

Something else I noticed: is this the first Big Money Week where they didn't try to give away a "dream car" as well?

I mean, only two episodes besides this episode have breached $250K, and one was the Gas Money Best of episode, and the other was the Season 35 premiere, so I say that's accurate for daytime.

As for the second statement: Only the very first two times did they try to give away dream cars as part of the gimmick.

Honestly, I honestly do like the $200K win on Pay the Rent. However, all for times Rent has been won, it was on a special (Big Money #1, July 4th, Breast Cancer, Today), so I honestly think that there has to be someway to make it so that a non special episode can result in a win.

I'm glad to see plenty of (well-deserved) criticism about this episode here.

Pay the Rent seals it fate as the worst Price game of all-time today. I wonder if when it was created it was designed to be super flexible on the difficulty?

Sure, Pay the Rent was TOO generous for $200K. 11 possible solutions does that. However, I'll argue that if that win hadn't have happened, the only notable thing about this show is That's Too Much

This is exactly the problem with having all these gimmick weeks once a season. You feel pressure from a producing standpoint to ensure there's a big moment so you get in the news. But when you get as desperate as they did here, it does not come off as legitimate in any way. They should have said mrrp it and have the week wipe out. What's the point of wasting 200k of budget when it's not even the clip of the day on Youtube?

It's a different TV era now, but the formula the 90s and 00s used of 190 plain old regular shows, a couple specials here and there, all mostly set up the same, and let moments just HAPPEN. Don't force anything in sweeps cycles and then bury shows set up to give away literally nothing elsewhere. This is why I will always hate Mike Richards, and I'll leave it at that.

Agreed.  In fact, the only way to have lost at the $10K --> $200K level was to have not put the most expensive by far item in the attic.  As much as I love to see big amounts of money won, it feels like a farce when they make winning that sum so ludicrously easy on a "special" episode but then have the rest of the year's playings only have one or two solutions that require putting the 3rd or 4th most expensive item in the mailbox.

I miss when the show just had regular shows and let surprising moments happen whenever they would play games for expensive prizes or cash like, 3 strikes, Plinko, triple play, or non car game like now or then, bonus game or clock game would be played for a car. The showcases would offer two or three cars.

No, you're giving them way too much credit, IMO. They (meaning, apparently, Adam Sandler) created a game that would offer $100K as a gimmick, and when they quickly saw that that amount would probably never be won with only one correct solution, started compromising the concept to force a few wins, because having one cash game where the advertised top prize is all-but-impossible to win looks bad enough. I don't think they're anywhere near as clever as you think they are.

Imagine that happening plus the contestant taking the Millionaire Dollar wedge to the BR too. It'll be the DOND Million Dollar Mission all over again.

I do wish there would be something where you could guarantee the puzzle in the bonus round was for $1,000,000, or at least $100,000.  Like...taking some special wedge to the bonus round revamps the entire wheel, instead of the prizes going from 35k to 50k and a single 100k, start at 100k, 150k, 200,, a couple 250k, and one 1m.

Another idea - have every single prize and dollar lost to a bankrupt accumulate in a jackpot, a la the "Big Bank" on new-era Press Your Luck.  Except it carries over between shows.  The million dollar wedge doesn't count, but if someone lost a $10,000 wedge to a bankrupt, that would.  Half-car wedges count in that every two lost to bankrupt add a car to this jackpot.  It carries over between shows and keeps growing until it's won.  Seed it with $100,000 at the start.

How would you win this jackpot?

No, you're giving them way too much credit, IMO. They (meaning, apparently, Adam Sandler) created a game that would offer $100K as a gimmick, and when they quickly saw that that amount would probably never be won with only one correct solution, started compromising the concept to force a few wins, because having one cash game where the advertised top prize is all-but-impossible to win looks bad enough. I don't think they're anywhere near as clever as you think they are.
Fair enough, but I think it was definitely designed to be very difficult. I think they realized how difficult it was.

It takes a playing or two to realize that the cheapest in the mailbox is not a good strategy. Of course one playing is all it takes.

I miss when the show just had regular shows and let surprising moments happen whenever they would play games for expensive prizes or cash like, 3 strikes, Plinko, triple play, or non car game like now or then, bonus game or clock game would be played for a car. The showcases would offer two or three cars.

The Big 3 being treated like the plague is one of the biggest disappointments of the Mike era.

It's gotten a bit better in the past couple of years, but the gold standard in the DOB era was each got a playing within 4-6 weeks at a time. Now the standard is we just one of them, on a rough rotation, per month. They seem to dislike the games as a whole, preferring to super sex up the other games in the gimmick weeks, and it's hard to understand why.

No, for the simple reason that "Big Money Week" has become just another theme to them. Why go into the effort of increasing any stakes whatsoever when the mere title shall attract eyeballs?

Another idea - have every single prize and dollar lost to a bankrupt accumulate in a jackpot, a la the "Big Bank" on new-era Press Your Luck. Except it carries over between shows.

It carries over between shows and keeps growing until it's won.
Wheel of Fortune has no week-to-week continuity and (it would appear) generally tries to give away as little as possible, so this would not be feasible.

Why does this game have to be either super-easy or mega-hard with very little leeway in-between?
Best comment in this thread.  I did not enjoy the $200K win.  It was manufactured.  I didn't like the cash equivalent gimmick either and not sure all the contestants understood it.  The $5,000 cash bonus was much easier for excited/nervous contestants to understand.  I also don't see why they had to do a cash game on a cash equivalent show and showing a sign for $100,000 and saying it's really $200K doesn't make any sense.  That game will just never sit right with me.

Was there any real reason for Big Money Week?  It just seems like they chose some random week to throw tons of cash around & make wins from other episodes seem cheap...

It was much better executed in the past, IMO, when the big money was confined to just one game. Then it was interesting because there was actually some suspense to who might get a shot at winning some huge $$$. Just tacking on $10K to every single pricing game win or just straight-up playing Cliff Hangers for cash (as opposed to starting with $250K and decreasing, which I thought was one of the best Big Money Week ideas they had) reeks of laziness.
