Correct me if I'm wrong, but for just the second time in the show's 48-year history, the season premiere ends with a :dsw: (with the first being the one from Season 35). Vickyann, who accomplished the feat 13 years ago, has some company now...  :-D

Gotta love DSWs. By the way, I did predict that there would be a DSW in the first week …

Also, love the fancy new “Double Showcase Winner” and “total” graphics.

Only because of episode shuffling. This was Thursday's episode.

My apologies.

On the one hand, it was impressive editing to make it seem like this was all along the episode they planned to be the season opener--for example, having Drew say "our first showcase showdown of season 48 is coming up" after Bullseye meant that they probably had Drew read segments like that on every show that will air this week so they could rearrange this week's shows as they desired. On the other hand, I don't like that they did that. Will viewership go up because they had a DSW at the end of the first show of the season instead of the fourth? I doubt it. And it gave them a VERY lame way to start the season (seriously, Double Prices as the first game of the new season??) Now, as for the games...

Double Prices: Easy peasy. And winning a Tesla for knowing that Australia wouldn't cost only $8,000 seems too simple.  Still, I'm very happy for Serlo! What a haul.

Lucky 7: As soon as the second digit was revealed to be 1, it was obvious this was in hard mode. Cathy had no chance with her multiple picks of 5.

Bullseye: Another easy setup.

1/2 off: Ouch. Charmaine did a good job through the first two SPs, but the last one to choose was pretty obviously the tape measure. Of course, we don't know if that would've changed the result.

Gridlock!: Major ouch.

Swap Meet: Very nice win of over $10,000 worth of prizes. Rarely is the most expensive prize the right one to swap with.

Showcases: DSW!! Good thing Cathy changed her bid from $25,000 to $24,866. Hopefully we'll see more of those!

I guess for me, and this is a relatively minor gripe, but I wish they'd have given the ARP of the bonus prize (today, the Telsa automobile).

I agree it's not particularly important to most viewers, but to some TPiR geeks who pay attention, it's the little things that matter.

That said, in and of itself it was a decent way to start Season 48. Everyone seemed to play their games well and -- even though someone pointed out this episode aired out of order -- we got a Double Showcase Win, so a lot to be happy about.

I just hope that some day this week, we get Golden Road.

The pros:

-Winning a Tesla in Double Prices (albeit an easy task)
-Great wins in Bullseye and Swap Meet
-Our first DSW of the season

The cons:

-Double Prices as a season opener (Go figure.)
-Painful losses in Lucky Seven and 1/2 Off
-That Gridlock wipeout

So, yeah, although the show started off on the wrong foot, it turned around well with the DSW at the end. I only wish we had something better than 3/6 for the day.

Not a fan of Double Prices as the lead off hitter to start a season (Personal bias here. I believe Any Number should be the first game played on the first show of every season) but when it was won I found myself excitedly anticipating what it would be. To have a Tesla won on a season premiere was a real treat and having such a thing revealed as a bonus prize after the win was cool and fun.

I would have lost 1/2 Off by picking box 1. I guessed when 1/2 Off showed up I guessed that they had put the money in box 1 in honor of the 1st show of the season.

I thought it was interesting how the DSW occurred because Cathy shaved her bid. For those who didn't see this show, Cathy had originally bid $25000 but shaved it $24866 at the last nanosecond thus changing her fate from a painful overbid to a DSW.

Having 1st show have both a Telsa and a DSW was totally awesome baby!

Welcome back, Price. :)

There's not a whole lot that bothers me about TPIR... but I really hate the whole "huge bonus prize for first pricing game win" thing and in particular the way the Tesla was given away today and how it was followed up by a miserable Lucky Seven set up and playing.

It would have been so much more enjoyable to see that car being played for in its own pricing game - even with a generous set up to give it a good chance of being win - not tacked on as a bonus to what was the easiest set up of the dullest game that we'll see all season.

I get why the show is doing this - it allows them to boast on their promos that they are giving away these big prizes without the risk that the big prizes won't be won - but part of the thrill of game shows is seeing contestants face some sort of challenge and win, whether through skill or luck.   As it was, the Tesla did absolutely nothing for me.

I actually like it, because it's a throwback to what the Cullen era used to do. Have they done this before? I haven't watched a lot in recent years, so am kinda curious though I doubt they did. But I do like it as a throwback concept.

This show was awful. I get that the gimmicks drive ratings. But we do not need to give away random $42,000 Teslas willy-nilly while still making the regular car games hard (201xx? come on now) on the season premiere. We could just make the actual car games easier and focus on the contestants. Why is that not enough now?

When we're out of money again in May, I'm pointing to this episode. Although the DSW was a very nice bid-shave!

No surprise having Double Prices as the first game of a new season.  Some will recall it was the first game of last season as well.

I guess people were expecting GRoad or Triple Play, or who knows?  Not when a Tesla is the bonus for a win.

If someone took a big haul in the first game won (a 90000 Mercedes in golden road for example). the Tesla wouldn’t be as big a deal comparatively speaking.  Expect more of the same this week I would think. The show handled the bonus placement appropriately in my opinion.

Are the showcase podium prize/price screens different? I don't remember them being that "bright" of a blue, nor do I remember the dollar signs in the background not being in a pattern.
Title: Re: TPiR Recap - 9/23/2019
Post by: LiteBulb88 on September 23, 2019, 07:32:31 PM
Slight correction: given that the Tesla was at least $42,000, Serlo was the biggest winner, not Cathy. Serlo's winnings were at least $42,000 + $9,630 + $2,690 = $54,320.

Are the showcase podium prize/price screens different? I don't remember them being that "bright" of a blue, nor do I remember the dollar signs in the background not being in a pattern.

Yes, they were. My initial reaction is I don't like them because they reduce the contrast between the background of the display and the display of the price itself. But I want to see them a couple of more times before I make that judgment firm.

I noticed a difference too.  The displays seem clearer and brighter than last season.

I definitely liked the DSW and Total Won graphics at the end.

As a side note: A $42,000 Tesla as a "bonus" seemed a bit excessive. A car in the $20,000 range would have been plenty of a bonus.  I think the Telsa would have been a better fit as a prize played for with 3 Strikes at some point in the show.

Also I have to note - When introducing Double Prices and James, Drew says that the trip is to Sydney when it was actually to the Gold Coast, which is a completely different city in a different state to Sydney.   Mind you Drew also said it's the same Double Prices prop that was used in 1972. :P

The cbs.com upload of the show has the new total money graphic. They must of use the video they originally shot of the DSW and forgot to update the youtube video in post production.

So if a Tesla was the bonus prize on the Thursday show, what is in store for the rest of the week with the bonus prize?

Very exciting to have a DSW this early in the season, especially after we had none the entire season before! Nice new graphics too. Otherwise not much to write home about in the episode.

After reviewing the episode on YouTube I can tell you there is a change in the showcase displays. First link is a random episode from Season 47, second link is Season 48 premiere.

Also, add me to those who think the new DSW graphics are amazing! It gives the DSW a nice elegant feel, without being too extravagant.

Without biting my head off, can someone explain why we think this was a shuffled episode?  Did we think this before we saw the DSW?  Or only after?

And if it were a shuffled episode, how and when did today’s contestants (not to mention the people in the studio audience) know that their air date had changed?

The photos at CBS Press Express identify today's show as #8824K:

https://www.cbspressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/shows/the-price-is-right/photos

According to the calendar on the TPiR webpage, 8824 was supposed to air on Thursday:

http://www.priceisright.com/calendar/

I doubt the audience in general was informed about the switch. I would imagine that CBS e-mailed the contestants to let them know about the switch, but I don't know for sure.

Then I find out from y'all that Cathy shaved her original bid back.  :-o

Wow, what an exciting season opening we had with that awesome Double Prices playing for a trip (said no one ever).

Count me in as disappointed too that the "bonus" was a car that also counted towards SCSD positioning. It's also pretty difficult to plan for a lineup when you have to allow for the possibility that you are going to need another door the entire show to hide it.

Great to see a DSW though after we got completely shutout last season.

I'm not sure how much hand Mike had in day-to-day operations, but with all the shuffling that went on after he left we could be in line for some rough setups as somebody new figures out how to balance the difficulty.

The concept of the Tesla bonus is fine, but Double Prices wasn't the execution they should have gone with, for the season premiere. A more "exciting" opener would have been Bonus Game, with 4 trips in the windows. Big build up, big pay off. It still could had been as easy a setup as DP, but the audience involvement would have been more nail biting.

Don't you get it? This is all just an entire gimmick to have at least one game  (technically spoilers for this week in the text and link) played in each lineup this week turning 48!

This is the first time since 1965 that a Price Is Right contestant was told that they won a prize before being told what that prize was.

It's also pretty difficult to plan for a lineup when you have to allow for the possibility that you are going to need another door the entire show to hide it.

I assume they're treating it the same way they treat the Publishers Clearing House bonus (with the exception that this week, they're not building anticipation by announcing at the beginning of the show exactly what the bonus prize will be). There's always a door available to conceal the PCH van, even if it isn't necessarily the same door for the entire episode.

I'm not sure if this question should go in here or in a new thread, but what would happen to the bonus prize if a show is skunked (AKA if no pricing games are won)?

Seems to me they all but guaranteed that the first pricing game, Double Prices, was won. C'mon, a trip to Australia either 6 thousand something or 9 thousand something?Hmm, tough one. Same goes for....hold on, I'll wait and talk about that in the thread for today's (9/24) show.

The producers will likely set-up at least one forced win at some point during the episode to essentially guarantee it is given away then if someone else doesn’t get lucky and win their pricing game. In this episode it was Double Prices and Bullseye. Bullseye is almost never lost anymore. On the second aired episode it was Push Over that was setup as essentially a forced win.

Only things I could think of would be some sort of carryover, or....it goes to the showcase winner if there was one or something.

You summarized my feelings perfectly.  Could not have said it better.  Very disappointing way to kick off a new season.
