Braves have the second best record in the NL going into the break. They've hit 143 homers this season. It's the bullpen that needs shoring up as once against Miami this weekend they blew a lead and subsequently the game and nearly blew last night's game. A deal is expected before the July 31 trade deadline.

Well, a quick check of the current MLB standings reveals that Detroit is the first to 100 losses, with Baltimore just two away. Also, the Tigers have three fewer wins (43) than the O's (46).

Not quite. They each have magic numbers of seven to get in and neither made ground last night on the Indians, the team they have to eliminate to clinch. Same story with their division rivals Tampa Bay and Oakland, respectively. The Astros' magic number to win the AL West is eight and the Yankees' magic number for the AL East is nine.

If the World Series ends up being, let's say Yankees/Brewers, you're again gonna see fans and players all bundled up due to the cold weather at the end of October. Well Milwaukee has the roof at least they can close, do remember that. This is nothing new though, remember when the World Series ended in November? Opinions are great, but cash is king.

Atlanta starter Julio Teheran may be odd man out in the postseason rotation as he's 0-3 with an ERA over 12.00 in his last three starts. We'll see what Brian Snitker has up his sleeve.

Minnesota has clinched the AL Central last night. Houston's magic number for home field through out the playoffs is two over the Dodgers and one over the Yankees thanks to having tiebreakers over both teams.
Oakland and Tampa Bay are ahead for the two AL Wild Card spots with a the former a game ahead in the loss column for home field. Cleveland is still in the hunt, though it is hanging by a threat at 1.5 games out of contention. Since all three teams are in different divisions, a Game 163 will be necessary should two finish tied for the second Wild Card. If all three teams tie for the two Wild Card spots, there will be two tiebreaker games with the winner of one game playing the third the next day for the right to advance.
On the NL side of the bracket, the five teams in its playoffs are the Dodgers, Atlanta, St. Louis, Washington and Milwaukee. The Dodgers and Atlanta have clinched the #1 and #2 seeds respectively. Milwaukee could overtake St. Louis in the NL Central, but by losing the head-to-head record tiebreaker it would have to finish one game ahead in the standings.
If Washington finishes tied with St. Louis or Milwaukee, it would have to play the Wild Card game on the road due to having a losing head-to-head record against both teams.

Although the Tigers have the same number of wins that the Orioles did last season, at least they have one fewer loss. Detroit fans are already having reminders of that awful 43-119 season from 16 years ago.
The Cardinals are division champions, and the Brewers will go to Washington for the Wild Card Game. In the AL, it'll be Rays at A's, and then the Division Series will line up this way:

My Wild Card picks: Oakland and Washington. The AL game may be a back and forth tilt but I think Oakland has the edge. I can't see the Brewers having any life, especially since they just got swept by Colorado of all teams.

Tonight's game was a microcosm of the Nationals season. During the year the Nats started 19-31 yet came all the way back to make the playoffs. Tonight Scherzer was off and the Nats fell behind 3-0. A strong bullpen outing from Strasburg and a 3 run eighth inning culminating with Juan Soto's clutch hit turned the game around. Man Josh Hader is overrated. Since Strasburg ended up having to pitch tonight, I'm guessing Corbin starts game 1.

When you have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball and players get hot, they're values go up and teams can't afford them. Look what happened to the Royals after 2015, nearly everyone performed so well they couldn't afford them anymore despite ranking in middle of payroll.

Similar to the hard-fought best of seven 1992 National League Championship Series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Atlanta Braves. Going into the 9th inning of game 7, the Pirates were winning 2 to 0, they were three outs away from returning to the World Series after 13 years, and the Braves came back to tie the game. If I take off my Diamondbacks hat and put on my MLB hat though, the 2001 World Series, along with the 2004 ALCS, is why I consider Maraino Rivera to be overrated. Give me a break. He's the all time leader in saves, both regular and post-season, and is the only player to be voted into the Hall of fame unanimously. Even the greatest players of all time have down moments.

After a wild 9th inning, the Houston Astros have won their 2nd A.L. pennant in the last 3 years. D.J. Lemahieu hit a game tying home run in the top of the 9th, only to be bested by Jose Altuve's pennant winning home run in the bottom of the 9th.
A tip of the cap to Altuve as well as to Michael Brantley for that awesome defensive play in the 7th.
Chapman, meanwhile, is a postseason choker. He blew game 7 of the 2016 World Series and the Cubs won anyway and tonight he cost the Yankees a chance to play game 7.

Interesting little factoid: this elimination of the Yankees means this is the first decade since the 1910s that they have not won the American League. That's how good they've been since they acquired Babe Ruth from the Red Sox in 1920.
I think this World Series goes the full 7 games, and I'm gonna be loyal to my hometown Astros and pick them to win. But the Nationals will certainly give them all they've got and make it potentially one of the great World Series in recent memory maybe.

And I hope FOX (even though I know they still use the football theme for postseason baseball) probably wants 7 games too, given that both teams have owned and operated stations in their markets. That was the case in 2017 when it went the full 7 games. This year, who knows.

I've been hearing the Series will be a yawnfest simply because markets #1 and 2 (Yankees and Dodgers) aren't in it. Markets #7 and 8 are. But they don't know anything we or Fox doesn't.

Is anyone surprised that the Nationals are up 2-0? I though for sure that the Astros would take at least one game in the early stages of the Series, but it looks like Washington will end up stealing the trophy from them. Steven Strasburg is totally awesome baby! :) This will be the 5th World Series this decade to go the full 7. The 2011 Cardinals beat the Rangers at home. Then the last 3 game 7s in the World Series have been won by the road team. In 2014, Madison Bumgarner, the goat postseason pitcher, got a 5 inning save on just 2 days rest to power the Giants over the Royals. In 2016, it looked as though Aroldis Chapman had blown it for the Cubs but they beat the Indians in extra innings anyway. In 2017, the Astros defeated the Dodgers as Yu Darvish choked and Charlie Morton came up huge. Greinke vs Scherzer tomorrow. I assume all pitchers expect Strasburg will be available to pitch tomorrow night.

Much like the LDS, Howie Kendrick was the offensive hero for the Nationals and Patrick Corbin pitched 3 strong innings out of the bullpen as the Nationals, 1ce 19-31 have their title.
This was the 4th consecutive World Series game 7 to be won by the road team and the 6th consecutive World Series to be clinched on the road.
A decade of postseason frustration just got wiped out.

Nationally, game 7 was the lowest rated of all time, but locally in Washington and Houston, it predictably blew everyone else out of the water. In Washington, the ninth inning alone drew a share of 74. In Houston, the game notched a 63 share.

Well it makes sense given that WTTG (the Washington D.C affiliate) and KRIV (the Houston affiliate) are both owned and operated by the network itself. And they are going to make a lot of money out of it as a whole.
