Natalie Trundy, an actress who is perhaps best known for appearing in four of the five original "Planet of the Apes" films, passed away back on December 5th, 2019 at age 79 (per this article (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/natalie-trundy-dead-actress-four-planet-apes-movies-was-79-1266487) from The Hollywood Reporter).
Trundy portrayed the mutant Albina in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes," human scientist Dr. Stephanie Branton in "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" and chimpanzee Lisa in both "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" and "Battle for the Planet of the Apes." Chalk this up to "nepotism" (in Trundy's own words), as Trundy was married to "Apes" producer Arthur P. Jacobs from 1968 to Jacobs' death in 1973.
(Note: I would have put this in the 2019 Obituaries Thread, but that thread is now locked.)

......this is gonna be a tough one for me to handle. Rush is quite a favorite band in my family (I guess the mother passed it down to my brother and I!). Not only was Neil their drummer, but upon joining the group, he became their main lyricist. Needless to say, his presence in the group was a significant one. I'll likely be spending the better part of tonight (and tomorrow) barnstorming through the Rush playlist on my iPod.

RIP Joe Diffie. I love his songs "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox if I Die" and "John Deere Green."
The first time I heard John Deere Green was at a rodeo, as it's a pretty common song they play before the rodeo starts. I loved it from the second I heard it. I bought the minute I got home on iTunes and put in on my iPod (that's how long ago that was!).

He had quite amazing vocal abilities. His first hit single, "Ain't No Sunshine", must have some sort of record for repetition—in the second stanza he sings "I know" 26 times straight. Also, 1978's "Lovely Day" has the all-time record for longest-held note in a Top 40 hit (18.1 seconds).

Tom Dempsey, New Orleans Saints placekicker whose 63-yard kick in 1970 set the NFL field goal record, has passed away at age 73 of the coronavirus.
(For the record, Dempsey's record was supplanted by the Denver Broncos' Matt Prater with a 64-yard shot in 2013.)

It's amazing how long Dempsey's record of 63 yards lasted (3 kickers tied the record -- Jason Elam in 1998, Sebastian Janikowski in 2011, and David Akers in 2012 and two others made 63 yard field goals more recently) before Prater finally broke it with 64 yards in 2013. Dempsey was also born without toes on his right foot and had to have a modified shoe made so he could kick.

Deitch was also attached for a time to direct the animated Charlotte's Web--and appears to have been E.B. White's preferred choice for the job--but was eventually dropped in favor of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera after the producers rejected his preliminary artwork for the picture, a decision Deitch appears to have remained upset about to the end.

To be polite, where did you come up with "fourth generation" T&J?
I was always told that the Deitch-era shorts were second-gen T&J, after the Hanna-Barbera shorts and before the Chuck Jones shorts.

"First"—the earliest. Tom was gray, much furrier, and displayed much more cat-like mannerisms (i.e., walking on all fours)
"Second"—the ones we're most familiar with. By this time, the MGM logo and opening title card changed mostly from red to blue. (Some re-issues of either series used the opposite logo and title.)
"Third"—started circa 1955, following the retirement of Fred Quimby. Now filmed in CinemaScope; used three-panel opening title graphic; Mammy Two-Shoes was permanently retired; Tom's owners were now a young white couple, whose faces were fully depicted

Harold Reid, one of the founding members of The Statler Brothers, on of the most decorated acts in country music, has passed away at the age of 80 after battling kidney disease. Thank you for clarifying, RJSchhex. I, personally, refer to the entire Hanna-Barbera era as one generation and failed to take into consideration that one can further break down the Hanna-Barbera shorts into three generations.

Wow, 2 deaths in 1 day
I wish I had your naivete.

I hadn't really thought about this before, but the reality of death means that every day there are less people in the world than the day before. In reality there are many more people in the world than this but for illustration: If one day there are 1000 people in the world and the next day 55 people die, now there are 945 people in the world. if 30 more die the next day now there are 915 people in the world. So we'll eventually become extinct as will all creatures as the same reality applies to dogs, cats, horses etc.

-
On his stint on Twenty-One, everyone knows Stempel was asked what the 1954 Oscar winner was, to which he said "Marty" when it was "On The Waterfront." That's not when his fate was sealed as the game had ended in a tie. In the ensuing game (where the money in the pot was $2500 per point difference), two questions had been asked and at that point, neither contestant knew what the other's score was. Whoever decided (if at all) to end the game at that point could and whoever was ahead was the winner. Van Doren, who was leading, chose to end the game, making him the champ.
-
My error: the 1954 Oscar winner was "Marty." Stempel's dive answer was "On the Waterfront. "
-
Just a clarification, he died on April 7. There was nothing confirmed till now. He died 364 days (because leap year) after Charles Van Doren. I'd say he got the last laugh.

If I'm correct, she was the second-to-last last surviving singer to have a No. 1 Billboard pop chart hit dating back to the early 1950s. Her song "Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart" went No. 1 in 1952. With her passing, Tony Bennett – he went No. 1 three times between 1951 and 1953 – survives as the last remaining living artist to have a No. 1 hit before the rock era began in 1955.
Another bit of trivia: "Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart" was the first song by an British artist to reach No. 1 on the American Billboard chart. Stayed at No. 1 for nine weeks, and would be one of just four pre-Beatles No. 1 hits by UK artists. The others were "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands" by Laurie London (1958); and "Stranger On the Shore" by Mr. Acker Bilk and "Telstar" by the Tornadoes (both 1962). At nine weeks at No. 1, "Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart" was the most successful single by a British performer for 16 years ... until the Beatles released "Hey Jude" in 1968, which matched Lynn's longevity record at No. 1. "Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart" remains in the top 5 of most successful British singles of all time by longevity at No. 1.

This is probably why Henson (I always wondered if there was a relation of any kind to Jim, and haven't seen any to date) isn't as remembered as other legendary college coaches, that he never did reach the top of the mountain (although his 1988-89 Illinois squad came really close). I don't remember hearing that, but I saw that too. And interesting he had the nickname after he left Detroit too, hadn't recalled that. I vaguely recall the drug suspension I think though, but a bit hazy.

Chadwick's passing also caught me by surprise. I pretty much forgot he had cancer. That and the news of it came at a time where so much was going on. Add that to the fact that Boseman did so much prior to his death was a shocker.
What a great role model. He'll be missed for sure, but doing a lot of stuff in film and outside of it emulated what Stuart Scott said years back by living on the terms one makes, and not cancer's.

Ms. Reddy was also the original, and only regular host of the Midnight Special on NBC late night Fridays after Johnny.
That's two singers with a Billboard #1 hit in 1972 that have passed on in the same year, and Ms. Reddy also was a host of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Too bad both are now considered undesirable by commercial radio, and they'll pretty much join the Patti Pages and Ray Conniff as long forgotten singers that will remain "thrift store junk" in terms of being low value.
Reddy and Davis join Don McLean, Al Green, Bill Withers, Harry Nilsson, Chuck Berry, Eugene Record (lead singer of the Chi-Lites), the Staple Singers (except for Mavis), and Sammy Davis, Jr. as performers with a #1 single from the same year the most popular version of TPIR debuted in Celebrity Heaven.
We've still got Neil Diamond, Neil Young, America (minus Dan Peek), Roberta Flack, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Mavis Staples (lead singer of the Staple Singers), Looking Glass, and Billy Paul left from the class of '72.

I had his autobiography From Ghetto to Glory, written after he'd helped lead the Cardinals to the 1967 title, as a child; it was one of my first exposures to the injustices too many African-Americans have gone through, especially in the days before civil rights legislation. On the field, Gibson might not have been among the best remembered names in the game, but there's no denying that at his peak, there was no one who pitched better.

I looked to have jinxed myself when I forgot to include Mr. Nash in my "Class of '72 survival club" post (which we've also lost all the classic members of the Temptations except for Otis Williams), but I guess my ESP was at work, and the "death in threes" rule prevailed again in that aspect. The show should try to replace the current Eazy As 1-2-3 think music with an instrumental remix of that song as a special tribute. Speaking of which, that song sounds fairly similar to The Supremes "Ask Any Girl" and is basically similar to the Motown sound, just with some trumpets added in.

Cancer, according to Newsweek (https://www.newsweek.com/pat-patterson-wwe-booking-genius-dead-1551763).

Also the creator of the Royal Rumble, although he had to press hard for it after an untelevised test run Vince McMahon granted at first failed miserably; fortunately, he got that second chance, and it's become one of the company's flagship events.

He was also the first Pro Wrestler to be openly gay.

RIP Frank Carney.

Ironically, Carney would later disown Pizza Hut, believing it had declined in quality without him, and became a franchisee of one of its biggest rivals Papa John's.

RIP Pat Patterson & Frank Carney. Two significant names to go this week that were a big part of "growing up" in life.
It was nice to see Pat and even Mr. Gerald Briscoe appear in last summer's WWE reunion (aired Monday, July 22, 2019 on USA) and I think it was fitting to see the first IC Champ become the oldest 24/7. I think he would've been the first legendary Hall of Famer and legit champ to hold that title before losing it to Briscoe half an hour later. While a legend in his own right, he was a big part in the Attitude Era.
Pizza Hut would've never be the same regardless of whether Mr. Carney had stuck around. Frank is right; it has gone downhill. Like Dominoes, it has improved over the years. In my opinion, and also like Dominoes, there are so many better options than Pizza Hut. There was nothing he or anyone can do about that. It's just business

Indeed, the first time I heard of Papa John's was when they aired the commercial with Carney showing up at Pizza Hut corporate headquarters to inform everyone he was switching chains ("Sorry guys; I found a better pizza.")

In Buffalo we mostly prefer local pizza chains. This year all of the area Pizza Huts closed due to poor sales. We have only one Papa John's in the entire area. Domino's Pizza has actually taken the crown from Pizza Hut in terms of most pizza restaurants in America.

Our major pizza chain is named after a Spaniard, go figure.
However, I only deliver for one chain (Picasso's) and a bunch of 1-2-3 location places.

Give a listen to the Credibility Gap's version of "Who's On First" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BmTYpVtICE) to hear Lander at his best. It's on the album "The Bronze Age of Radio."
He was also the voice of Jerry Lewis in the 1970 cartoon Will The Real Jerry Lewis Please Sit Down?

He also famously portrayed Zeus in the Hulk Hogan led film No Holds Barred in 1989, which was used to set up a brief WWF stint in tandem with the movie, the most notable part of which saw him tag with Randy Savage against Hulk Hogan and Brutus the Barber Beefcake in the main event of that year's SummerSlam. He briefly reprised his rivalry with Hulk under the name Z-Gangsta in WCW 7 years later as well.

On this note, there were two huge pro wrestling deaths at the end of 2020, announced on the same day no less, December 26th. First Danny Hodge passed away at 88 on Christmas Eve, then more shockingly AEW star Brodie Lee, formerly known as Luke Harper of the Wyatt Family in WWE, died of a non Covid lung issue at 41 on the 26th proper.
