Welcome to Season 4 (and the 3-D Pyramid logo now center stage). I noticed an apparent rule change right away: the contestant starts the maingame giving the clues and the teams at the end seemingly have no choice as to who gives (the contestant does) in the third round of subjects.
Other observations: Did I hear Leslie Jones curse? Did that get by the censors? And I know it most likely won't happen, but I wish the show would go in a more intellectual direction, as it used to be when Dick Clark was the host. And what shall we say about Robert?? I think Mr. Clark would have told him to "calm down" at the least. I, as host, would have.
Wow, what a pace Rosie O'Donnell was on during her second trip to the bonus round. I thought she and her partner would break Billy Crystal's very old 26 second record.
As for particular Winner's Circle subjects: I immediately thought of "a candle" and "Madame Tussaud's figures" for "Things Made of Wax". I had to pause for a bit when I saw "Types of Eggs"; I might have passed that one. The contestant gave some good clues though. Any excellent ones out there?
Was "Parts of a Sink" too difficult for a first subject? It's relative. And tough loss for not being general enough on "Members of a Rock Band".

In the first half, second round, I knew Pluto wasn't considered a planet anymore (it's a dwarf planet), so I said "Uranus." Leslie then accidentally said "it starts with a P," and we got the cuckoo. Also, I don't use my ice bucket when I stay in a hotel room, so bucket wasn't coming to me until just after the buzzer sounded.
This was the first session of the last day of taping, April 16, 2019. Personally, I can't wait to see how the other people I met that day did on the show. I hope they won big!

Was "Parts of a Sink" too difficult for a first subject? It's relative.
It was a bit tougher than the typical first category. I would've said faucet, hot and cold knobs, and drain.
Football field was a toughie too having to avoid saying "field." I accidently said field goal posts when thinking of clues.
Strange they took Anthony saying give you the finger for Things You Do With Your Fingers.
What an amazing literal last millisecond win in the second half Mystery 7!

Rosie and Leslie were very nice and personable to me and Jaclyn, my fellow contestant. It was great to meet them and work with them in the game. Also, growing up, I watched Rosie's work on Nickelodeon and her talk show, and I was in the audience for Alec Baldwin's premiere episode of Match Game, when she was on the panel, so it was truly awesome to win in the Winner's Circle with her.

In the third round of clue-giving in each main game, Michael did ask us contestants if we wanted to give or receive. Jaclyn and I both opted to give; I'm surprised they edited this out of the final broadcast.

Thanks! I will admit I blanked out a bit on the final subject in the Winner's Circle, "Racket Sports." I had "Tennis" as my definitive clue, but I didn't follow up with "Badminton" and "Squash" soon after. I was a bit nervous because I was just one subject away from winning $50,000 and I had ample time to do so. I let the gravity of the situation sink in.
Luckily, Rosie picked up on what I was trying to get at when repeating "Tennis," and I leapt out of the chair when I heard the bells. Also, I felt amazed at winning the Winner's Circle under 30 seconds, which is a heck of an accomplishment.

What was the contestant selection process like? How long had you been trying to get on Pyramid?

This was my second attempt to get on the show. My first attempt was an online application back in the summer of 2016, when they asked for contestants for Season 2, and I never received any callback from it.
I found out about onsite auditions in New York City on Valentine's Day through a post in the Facebook group Game Show News. This was a surprise to me. I passed on going to onsite tryouts in New York two years earlier (I was unemployed and any travel was a luxury I could not afford), but I made sure I would go down to try out for this year. I put in time off from my job and when it was granted, I hopped on the next bus from Boston to New York City.
I arrived in the city quite late, so I rode the subway and jogged down to ABC's studios. I was welcomed by the staffers and brought to a waiting area, where other hopeful contestants were staying. I filled out a paper application that asked for my background information, interesting facts about me, and what I'd do if I won $150,000. After I turned in my application, I waited my turn to do a videotaped one-on-one interview with one of the casting coordinators.
When I met the casting coordinator, she asked me to explain some of the highlights on my application. What caught her eye was that I was a cheerleader in high school, which most could not tell based on my appearance or my current job (working as a proposal writer for a tech company). Afterwards, my gameplay skills were assessed by having me describe a set of 7 words to her, then me trying to guess 7 words described by her, followed by me describing 7 words. Then, came the Winner's Circle. When this happened, I naturally started giving the rules by heart, and she was so impressed, she recorded me giving the rules. I left the audition saying how I just found about the tryouts and had to hoof it back to Boston, which showed how dedicated I was to trying out for the show.
Two weeks later, there was a Skype interview with a member of the casting team, she did a mock round where I would describe 7 words to her, and she would try to guess them. She tested my ability to pivot to a new way to giving clues by pretending to not know the answer despite very descriptive clues. After I played my round, she gave feedback on what I did well, and where I needed to improve (don't inundate the receiver with a lot information, and explain words as simple as possible). Then, we did a mock Winner's Circle round, in which I gave and she received. I learned that dumping too many clues on the receiver would not give them a chance to digest the information to give a reasonable guess. The contestant coordinator noted afterwards where I did well and where I needed to improve on clue giving or knowledge areas.
After that Skype interview, I was scheduled for two more. The calls were conducted in the same manner with mock games; the casting coordinators want to see if you've been practicing and improving yourself based on the feedback they gave you, and that you're excited/happy to potentially be a contestant. My last Skype interview was longer; the head of the casting department asked more detailed questions about my experience, what I'd do with the money, and interesting facts about me. We did one last main game/Winner's Circle combination and I had to show I mastered the game and was super-excited. After that last interview, I did not hear anything for a couple of weeks.
In March, I was put through a Skype contestant bootcamp that trained players on how to hone their technique. Like the auditions, mock games were played, and I was given feedback on giving clues to celebrities, so I could improve my chances of getting 7/7 in 30 seconds. Also, they wanted to continue seeing excitement/passion about playing the game. I also played mock Winner's Circles, too, much in the same way described earlier. After I played my mock games, I would note any feedback and spend my spare time honing my technique in areas I needed to improve on. I went through The $25,000 Pyramid board game and watched old episodes of the show to practice so I could prepare myself.
Eventually, in mid-March, I got the call that I was booked for the show, and I was elated. I spent the next several weeks finishing my bootcamp sessions with the casting team while preparing for the show (buying clothes, continuing to hone my technique to the morning of the taping by watching episodes online).
When the day arrived, I was super excited when I entered the studio, and there were some last-minute mock games to help prepare me for the real thing. After we, the contestants, were briefed on the eligibility rules and regulations about game shows, we were then slotted by the producers. There was a coin toss to decide who would sit in the contestant's chair closest to the Winner's Circle, to pick first, and I won it. Eventually, after getting into wardrobe and some makeup, I was walked to the set, and ready to play the game.

Wow, that is a really long process. As much as I would love to be on the show, I don't think I'd have the patience to go through the entire process you describe.

On the June 16th episode: Gage was a great contestant. He gave some excellent clues for "Things With Necks" (including "beer bottles" and "a tall giraffe") in the Winner's Circle. My sister and I enjoyed watching him win $150,000 (the first of the season), but we would have enjoyed it more if the subjects in the $100K circle were more challenging. "That was so easy!" we both said out loud.
Being an old-school guy I liked the clue "rotary" for "Types of Phones", and before she was buzzed for being too descriptive, the contestant gave some fantastic clues for "Things That Kick" (an in utero baby","soccer players", "a donkey"), and "Things That Are Tickled" ("feet", "Elmo" <--- nice!)
I would have said "smile", "smirk" and "frown" for "Facial Expressions". That subject and "Things with Bubbles" slowed her down. And "Parts of a Hospital"? "The emergency room", "the maternity ward", "the nurses' station".

Gage played the game impeccably. His second trip to the Winner's Circle was amazing to watch; he cleared it in just 31 seconds and he won the $100,000 in the process, becoming this season's first $150,000 winner.
Addie and Randy played a very strong game in the first round of the second half, including two buzzer beaters, leading to an exciting tiebreaker. It's too bad that Addie couldn't take the Winner's Circle for $50,000 or $100,000. Her methodical method of clue-giving allowed her to come up with some specific clues, and she lucked out on reaching the top in her first trip. Still, $19,000 and the Mystery 7 trip is a nice day's work.
I noticed that this episode contained a plug for the show's casting website, castingpyramid.com (http://www.castingpyramid.com). Does this mean the show will be renewed for a fifth season next summer? I hope so, as I'd love to see more people get on, play the game and win big.

On the June 30th episode: Congratulations to Brielle (hopefully spelled correctly) on her $150,000 win. She is the second player this season to reach that mark. She was an excellent player who gave excellent clues, including "two-faced personality" and "breast implants" for "Things You Fake" (keyword being 'fake') and "an old face" and "an un-ironed shirt" for "Wrinkled Things".
Not a good Pyramid player: Alyson Hannigan. She even apologized to the viewing audience.
So close to $50,000 in the second half-hour! Even using the word "ones" wasn't enough for Joel McHale to get "Types of Books". Strahan's "hardcover" and "paperback" were superb.
And finally, the contestant gave some clues I wasn't expecting for "Kinds of Teeth" ("braces ones"??, "nice ones"). The judge accepted Joel's "Things That Go On Your Teeth" for that subject. Hmmm.... I would say she made up for those with the ones she gave for "Things That Glow". $50K win.

Brielle played the game beautifully. She gave great clues in her Winner's Circles to become the second $150,000 winner of the season. I thought the "Friends" category was going to be killer, but Bobby Berk made the connections and helped her win.
Also, there were some humorous moments in the first half's first game: "Send in the..." "Clowns" for "Troops," being one of my favorites.
Alyson was not a good player at this game. Her clue-giving in the first half of the second game wasn't easy to follow and it resulted in the game being over after five subjects.
Like the season premiere, there was a heartbreaking loss in the second game's first winner's circle. Anthony gave some good clues, but more specific ones like "hardcover" and "paperback" (I thought of "Barnes & Noble ones" or "Bibles" and "Dictionaries") would have resulted in a $50,000 win.
Congratulations to Emerald for winning the Mystery 7 and $50,000 with Joel McHale. She really connected with him when they were paired together.

On the July 7th episode: Not one, not two, but three $50K wins during the hour.
I've never watched Impractical Jokers, but the celebrity players were pretty funny. They were also pretty good Pyramid players; quick thinking on how to get "The Wynn". Rachel was a very good player; so was Ross Mathews. Roselyn Sanchez was not.
How about the play on words with "I Haven't The Vegas Idea" and "If You Love That Hotel So Much, Then Marriott"? You see, you can get laughs without at all being crude or sexual.
On the Winner's Circle subjects: I immediately thought of "you twiddle them" for "Things You Do With Your Thumbs". (Yep, I'm old school. :) ) There's also "you hitchhike with them". From the way he appeared, I don't think Ross was going to get "Deadly Sins". I liked "a crashing plane" for "Things That Fall From The Sky"; I would have added "a meteorite", "rain" and "snow".
Any excellent clues for "Things That Are Soothing"? I came up with "a warm bath", "massaging fingers", and "a back rub". And, how about "an overly warm drink" for "Things You Ice"?

I've never watched Impractical Jokers, but the celebrity players were pretty funny. They were also pretty good Pyramid players; quick thinking on how to get "The Wynn".
I love the show so it was awesome seeing them on as Pyramid celebrity players tonight. It's a show that people either find hysterical or stupid and immature.
For "Things You Ice," my first thoughts were a birthday cake, champagne, and a bruise.

I see your point, but Yoplait is a brand of yogurt, so I’m thinking that is why the clue was deemed acceptable.

I think since Yo is the only part that is also in yogurt it was fine. If the contestant were to say "Go-gurt" that would very likely be buzzed since it contains the main part of the word.

On the July 14th episode: OK. Gronk is a Super Bowl champion, but not a champion Pyramid player. Quite different games, I understand. :) Quick thinking with the "Edelman being faster than a cheetah" quip though.
Bobby Moynihan is, on the other hand, a very good player, who, as mentioned on air, has won over $300,000 for his contestant partners over the years of the current iteration of the show. I'm a fan and he's probably my favorite celebrity guest on this version. You might know him from his long tenure on SNL and/or as the voice of Panda on "We Bare Bears". He helped the only $50K winner of the hour conquer his pyramid.
Wait a minute! What did the things in the "Bosox Injection" subject have in common? Strahan didn't reveal it on the air. Was it edited out for broadcast?
"Things That Are Strong"? How about "a powerlifter" and "a stiff drink"? "Chopping onions" immediately came to mind for "Things That Make You Cry", and "football players" & "motorcycle riders" for "People Who Wear Helmets". In hindsight, I would have said "protected football players" and "protected motorcycle riders".
I sympathize with the contestant; I would have to pause and think as well upon seeing "Words With Two-Letters". I came up with "up" and "by" after a little thought. (The clue of "to" was deemed unacceptable; it sounds too much like "two". :) ) And nice clues given for "Things On Earth": "countries", "oceans", "atmosphere"; I also think the way those clues were delivered helped.

On the July 21st episode: Three $50K winners. Not bad at all.
I remember seeing Steve Schirripa on the version of Pyramid hosted by Donny Osmond.
About 31 seconds. That is about how long the contestant and Chris Sullivan had to get "Things That Are Blessed" for $100,000. Strahan's "a sneezing person" was the perfect clue to go along with all of the others given. I especially liked "holy water" and "this marriage". (How about "this mess"?)
I would have said "a queen's head" and "a king's head" for "Things With Crowns", though that last word wasn't needed on the show. I thought of "a stubbed toe" for "Things That Are Painful (Hurt)", and by the time I came up with saying "their way" in a sad voice for "Things People Lose" that pyramid had already been conquered, with better clues I admit. :)

Incidentally, that last subject in the first game's second Winner's Circle tripped up William Shatner on The $20,000 Pyramid, but no chairs were thrown tonight.
Tonight was fun to watch. Carolyn breezed through her first Winner's Circle, but couldn't come up with "A sneezing person" to add $100,000 to her total. Still, $61,500 is a nice day's work.
Matt and Katy were equally matched in game 2. It's great to see them both win $50,000, especially with deliberate approaches in the last subjects of their Winner's Circles. Also, for the first time since June 30th, someone finally won the Mystery 7. Katy won with Jamie and now she's going to the Bahamas (though not on a Disney Cruise, like I will).

On the July 28th episode: Jay Pharoah: "You ride on it." A llama, of course. :)
I know there's the pressure of time and the excitement and all, but the words in the main game would be easier to get if the players would remember the subject!. For example: things that end with the letters "AMA". Tragedy?? Horse?? Carriage?
Jay and Jeff Ross can be pretty funny, but they are nowhere near the best Pyramid players ever. I will say that Jeff got better over time.
For "Things That Are Magical", how about "a wand" or "a Disney kingdom"?
Good idea to say "Saturday (things)" and "Sunday (brunch)" for "Weekend Activities". I came up with "Discount Nordstrom clothes" and "a hanging towel" for "Things on Racks".
The contestant gave practically perfect clues for "Types of Tape": "Scotch" and "duct", and kudos to the same contestant for "Denzel" for "Famous People Named Washington". And although it wasn't necessary tonight, I can clearly imagine Dick Clark saying "his eye patch" and "his wooden leg" for "Things A Pirate Uses".
And finally, "Things That are Funny": Pete Holmes. I agree. :) Especially entertaining second half-hour with great contestants.

"Things that are Magical" had a trap and the contestant fell into it. That was a downer to watch.
"Weekend Things" was tough, but doable. Saying "Saturday" or "Sunday"-related items repeatedly might have made something click with a receiver.
"Things on a rack" was a tough one. All I could think of was "hanging clothes," "hanging towels," "pool balls," and "medieval prisoners."
The second half was great to watch. Pete Holmes was a pretty good player and he won $50,000 for both contestants, including the Mystery 7 for Siobhan.
The show will take a break on August 4th, in favor of the CMA Fest; it will return on August 11th. Hopefully the winning continues!

For "Things That Are Magical", how about "a wand" or "a Disney kingdom"?
I'm thinking a Disney Kingdom would've been buzzed for describing magical.

Using Google to search for “magical” (without quotes) gives two definitions right away. Definition two: beautiful or delightful in such a way as to seem removed from everyday life. I would argue that Disney kingdoms are definitely designed in such a way. Also, the example sentence given is “It was a magical evening of pure nostalgia.” So it seems that things do not actually have to possess “magic powers” to be described as magical considering this definition.

I noticed that there was no “tell us a little about yourself” segment for any of the contestants, yet there was time to explain the Winner’s Circle rules. Also, I liked how calmly Chris Sullivan played the game. (Was he a little too calm?)
What was the subject for the first half-hour’s Mystery 7?
I thought of “a contagious disease” for “Things That Spread”, and “litmus paper” for “Things That Change Color”. (My scientific mind at work.) The chameleon clue was excellent.

James was great with those gestures when he was describing "Things You Don't Do With A Mouthful of Crackers" which was behind "Putting on the Ritz" (it was today's Mystery 7). That's the best way to do it, he did it well, and the way he carried out the actions had me laughing a lot!
However, I wouldn't have given "Plank" to the one contestant because she didn't say it at the right time! (For those of you that might not know, a category was chosen, and the celebrity passed on the fourth word (which was Plank). The fifth word appeared, and during the course of the celebrity's description of the word, the contestant said "Plank" and they gave to her credit the previous clue, which she passed on.) What would you have done? Is this how it was handled in the Dick Clark era as well? (I can't say I've seen very many Clark episodes, so that's why I'm asking.)

In the Dick Clark era, clue-givers could not return to passed words (likely due to a technological issue with returning words to the monitor). The receiver had to say the word during the course of their round to earn credit for it. Dick would note this to teams in the event where a win, tie score or a bonus like the Mystery 7 was at stake; a passed word risked forfeiting the bonus or it meant a team may not win or achieve a tie.
In the current version, clue receivers who say the word during the course of their round, even it was passed, earn credit for it. This played out in my episode on June 9, when Leslie Jones said a word I already passed on, but we were credited for it. Also, clue-givers can pass words and return to describing them if time permits, thanks to improvements in technology.

Actually, on the Donny Osmond 2002-04 version, contestants were not given credit for answers guessed after they already passed on them. All other versions had the rules that goldroadfanatic described above.

I would have said "Tony's Frosted Flakes" as one of my clues for "Things That Are Great". And speaking of great, I would describe at least some of the previously given clues here for this subject (along with Strahan's "The five lakes") that way.

On the August 25th episode: At least there was one $50K win tonight.
How long has it been since we've seen a perfect score of 21 in the maingame? Way to go Dana and Kevin. She was a great contestant who got really close to winning $100K.
Interesting how the "info about the contestant" segment was apparently edited out of the first half-hour's game but included in the second. I wonder if Jamal's mother still has the home game and/or the carpet cleaner from her appearance in 1975. Also, to borrow a phrase, Adam Pally: "You are the weakest link!" (in the game).
I really liked Dana's clue of "the food court" for "Parts Of A Mall". And kudos to her for coming up with it so quickly. I thought of "a soprano's voice" for "Things That Are High"; I didn't even consider following Dana's marijuana path. :) (No offense.)
For "People In An Office" I came up with "the receptionist" and "the boss". And I would have said "elastic bands" and "tires" for "Things Made of Rubber".

Tonight was the first perfect 21 of the season. I leapt from my chair when I saw that happen.

I wonder if it's due to time constraints or interview length/content that is the determining factor of whether or not it makes the air. My interview (and Jaclyn's) was cut from the final broadcast, and I was surprised to not see it on TV. However, if this schedule (http://www.thefutoncritic.com/showatch/100000-pyramid/listings/) is accurate, my game will be rerun on the first half September 15's episode. I wonder if the contestant interviews will make that broadcast since I'd imagine they would edit out Michael's announcement that this was the premiere of the fourth season and that the show has already given away millions of dollars, and there would be time to fill.

It's a shame we can't see Jamal's mother's appearance because it's either wiped (in the case of The $10,000 Pyramid) or in legal limbo (the Bill Cullen-hosted The $25,000 Pyramid).
One thing I noticed was Eliza nearly said "Phone" for "Buttons on a Phone" but she showed great restraint and successfully won $50,000.
It was heartbreaking to see Rachel Dratch freeze in the final seconds of Dana's second trip to the Winner's Circle. If there was more time or Rachel blurted her guess out, Dana would have won $100,000.
In both games, getting only 2 out of 7 in a category was tough to bounce back from. Though, to their credit, both teams managed to force their opponents to play the sixth subject in their respective games.
I noticed that this episode didn't include a plug for www.castingpyramid.com (http://www.castingpyramid.com). Hopefully we'll learn if the show has been renewed for a Season 5 next summer pretty soon, and they'll start the casting process this winter.
The show is taking a break next week, but it will be back on September 8th. We're heading into the home stretch of Season 4.

It's a form of the word, so it would be illegal. There is precedent for this; in The $25,000 Pyramid or The $100,000 Pyramid in the 1980s, a celebrity clue-giver used "Poor Persons" for "People Whom You Help" and after a bit of hesitation, the judge sounded the buzzer. See the 3:00 mark below:

I believe in the 80s Pyramid: the WC Category was PEOPLE WHO EARN A COMMISSION (that one is a money stopper FYI), and Teresa Ganzel said "Certain salespeople" which got the zap by said judge... Yeah any WC category with people in the subject is a red area....

On the September 8th episode: Yes! A $100K winner. And in dramatic fashion, as they had to come back to a subject. Congratulations to Michael, who won $109,000 total. (By the way, I can remember seeing "Famous Deserts" on the lowest row of subjects on an episode of Dick Clark's Pyramid where Dick Cavett read it as "desserts" by mistake.)
An unfortunate slip of the tongue though cost Emily, a very good Pyramid player, $100,000. (I liked the way the nearly conquered pyramid looked after her 100K try; a configuration not seen often.)
I would have said "weathered metal" or "red, flaky iron" for "Things That Are Rusty", and "elevator buttons" for "Things You Push", though I did like "your grandma's wheelchair" for that subject. And I noticed that after that clue was given the celebrity said "Things You Shove" before saying "Push". Interesting. :-)
What shall we say after La La Anthony's trip to the Winner's Circle? I wonder what her contestant partner Michael was thinking during and after that round. "U.S. States!" "What An Axe Might Say" ("machete"?). And how about "a long kite" (along with "a happy dog") for "Things With A Tail"?

On the September 15th episode: Bridget and Rosie O Donnell made a great team (earning a perfect maingame score of 21), as did Jeff and Rosie (doing the same). However, Bridget to me seemed overconfident, especially in the Winner's Circle, where some clues were beeped out.
Jeff gave some excellent clues for "Things That Are Packed"; I would have added "FDR's Supreme Court". And for "Things With a Head"? How about "a good beer", or "a foamy beer"?
Like Chris Parnell, I grew up watching Dick Clark on Pyramid, though I am too young to remember seeing the $10,000 version on TV. I wish he was still around to at least possibly consult on the Strahan version.
Scott was another fine player. Congratulations to him on his $50K win and kudos to him for using "hepatic" to describe "Liver" and outsmarting the host. For his "Things That Are Rare", I would have added "a bloody steak".
And what a great $50K moment for Allison. The judge accepted "Things You Do On Your Knees" for "People Who Kneel", surprising both her and myself. Fantastic clue given there: "a proposing husband".

Personally, I'm surprised the judge let "The NFL" stand as a clue for "Names of Sports Leagues." As I saw firsthand on a taping for Season 3 in 2018, when a contestant was disqualified for saying "LED" for "Types of Light Bulbs," I thought Brigette was going to be buzzed on the $1,000 subject.
I really thought Jeff was going to win $50,000, but "Packed" wasn't coming to Rosie. I would have added "Your school lunch, your cigarettes, and your school bookbag" to his two clues. However, he picked up the Mystery 7 trip to Turks and Caicos plus $11,500, not a bad night's work.
Scott and Allison were both excellent players tonight. Congratulations to both of them for taking the Winner's Circle for $50,000.
Rosie O'Donnell's two games this season were her first appearances on this incarnation of Pyramid since Season 1 in 2016, when she faced off against Kathy Najimy on the premiere and finale for that season. In her two appearances this season, she won the Mystery 7 twice, and a total of $85,500 for the contestants, which is not bad.
Twelve shows down and one more to go. Let's end the season with a bang!

That Winner's Circle's $50 subject was "Names of Colleges (University)." Terry Lester, the clue-giver, said "UCLA" and "USC," which led to the contestant correctly guessing that subject. When the contestant cleared the sixth subject and as the bells and music were playing to indicate a win, Dick rushed out to explain there may be an issue with one of the subjects and that the judges and producers would discuss it during the break.
When the show returned from commercial, Dick explained while Terry's clues would have been illegal in the front game, they were acceptable in the Winner's Circle because the box specifically called for names of colleges and universities, and the contestant kept the $10,000. Perhaps because "University" was in parentheses, it wasn't considered the essence of the category and was a close enough answer for the contestant to receive credit?
I think for tonight's subject, "Names of Sports Leagues," because there are only so many clues that don't have "league" in their full name (The NBA, PGA, PBA, and NASCAR are ones that come to my mind), the judge was more lenient on this one? This is just pure conjecture on my part.

Also, reading a recap of the show, the subject was "Names of Professional Sports Leagues." As a result, PGA and PBA would contain "Professional" in them, and would be illegal. Wow, this one's a toughie.

Interestingly, though, when the same category appeared a few months later on the daytime version, "University" was no longer in parentheses. It just read "NAMES OF COLLEGES."
Also possibly of interest: There was another reason that they could have ruled that $10K win invalid. Terry gave a clue of "A dais" for the top category, THINGS WITH A PLATFORM. That's a direct synonym, and they didn't catch it. In fact, the opponent that night, who scored $750 in the next round, returned to the show a few months later, and I think that may be the reason why.

On the September 22nd episode: I've said this before, but the game could be quite a bit easier if players would remember the subject, especially when it's just been stated. Case in point: Words that contain a double "T". Small? Younger? And it's too bad Jonathan, a very good player, fell into the trap that was set with "A Crossing Guard" by using the word "cross" in his description.
There's something about getting a Winner's Circle subject at the last second. Unfortunately, it wasn't for the $50K, but I liked seeing the trilon turn to reveal "$3000" for "Things You Sit On". Great clues were given, but it didn't click for Bobby Moynihan until the final moment of the round. Strahan's use of the word "lapsed" in his clue for "Things You Renew" was a good idea, but it didn't help Bobby after the fact.
In a way, it was fortunate that Jonathan's slip of the tongue ("Vodka") didn't end up costing him $100,000. I personally froze on "Things You Freeze"; my sister came up with "a skater's pond water". I did better with "Things You Blow": "a trumpet", "birthday candles", "your congested nose".
For "Types of Singers" how about "a soprano", "an alto", and "a baritone"? And for "Things That Rise" I came up with "yeasty dough" and "the morning sun".

It's a shame that tonight ended with no Winner's Circle wins. However, there were some nail-biting moments in the Winner's Circle, especially with Mario Cantone. If the show comes back another season and he's on, I hope he goes in and wins. He has yet to do so on any of his appearances in this era of Pyramid.
Jonathan had some really bad luck-he missed out on the Mystery 7 on a trap word (you have to tiptoe around the description of "A crossing guard" by saying something like 'This person helps children walk the street to school.'). Also, his slip of the tongue with "vodka" was painful to watch.
It was great to see a buzzer-beating 7/7 with Tauri and a last-second win with David in the second half. Also, the last Mystery 7 of the season was won, too.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this season of Pyramid (and getting the chance to play the game for real). Here's hoping it's renewed for a fifth season.
