Title: Wheel of Fortune Season 41 (and Celebrity S4) Discussion Thread
Post by: mechamind on August 26, 2023, 12:25:45 PM
Only two more weeks until the 41st season of Wheel of Fortune begins! It's going to be hard to top the last two seasons (S39 with its $100,000 wins and the return of Changing Keys, S40 with XL and some new theme weeks).

Celebrity Wheel could be a different story this time. It is also expected to start soon, though the WGA strike may affect the schedule. Tape dates and any cancellations are being posted on Buy A Vowel.

Of course we know, Pat Sajak will be retiring from the show after this season. Another thing to note is that the 7th episode of the season will mark 40 years since nighttime Wheel's debut! It's also 40 years since the introduction of the famous $5,000 space.

As usual, I'm hoping for something great to happen this season!

Two weeks for the civilian version to start?   Wow.  This was that fast man!

I heard that $40,000 is the mainstay minimum now?

^Yes, $40,000 is the minimum cash amount now. They're no longer doing the minimum matches the season number thing.

The start of Season 41, and the puzzles in this maingame were very hard!   Even some of the popular letters were duds in several of these puzzles!

I thought that Vanna was going to be m.i.a. for a few shows because she was COVID-stricken...it seems they're airing that out of order.

On the other hand, it was nice to see a Million Dollar Bonus Round to start the season. Here's hoping a Million Dollar Winner will be crowned before Sajak completes the season...

They did push it back; I'm guessing they didn't want to start the season with a Vanna-less week.

It looks like Wheel is just standing "Pat" with the rules, Wheel layouts (including the BR), graphics/sound package, and the like for the final season. The MDW is still no longer held by a family member or friend in the audience at the start of the BR like it was pre-COVID as was established last season. Too bad our first Bonus Land contestant couldn't taste victory there.

We went a full week without a cringe worthy Trip Puzzle. Even Monday and Friday didn't push it as far as I've seen in the past. :P

A HAPPY-GO-LUCKY GUY (Person)
ELVES AND HOBBITS (Characters)
THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (Title)
COFFEE-TABLE BOOK (Around The House)
DID I JUST SEE WHAT I THINK I SAW? (Phrase)

I do think the puzzle should have some kind of relation to taking a trip/vacation or the location though. Elves and Hobbits was a really random puzzle for a trip to Italy particularly.

We're off to an 0 for 5 start in the bonus round this season, with at least two going viral for not making sense as puzzles.

The WHAT ARE YOU DOING Bonus puzzle was one of those two weird puzzles IMO.

I thought the contestant on Friday picked right with the category: FOOD and DRINK over THING and PHRASE.    Bellamie put the landmine in FOOD and DRINK.  Unbelievable.

I don't know if I'd call it a "landmine" when all four of CDMA fill in half the puzzle. For the average player, it would look like a forced win.

Per news sources that include Variety (https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/vanna-white-wheel-of-fortune-contract-extension-1235727846/) this afternoon, Vanna has settled her contract dispute and will remain as the co-host until 2026.

As other changes for the show, Alex Van Wagner (ABC's Shark Tank & Holey Moley, NBC’s The Voice, and NBCUniversal’s The Kelly Clarkson Show) is the show's new director following the retirement of Robert Ennis. And Maggie Sajak will be expanding her role as the show’s social media correspondent with a recurring “Fan Fridays” segment.

If it is, then it's a new addition for 2023-2024, since I'd always heard that the next-highest thing after $100K has always been $50K.

Budget mode my butt! It's the producer/showrunner Bellamie Blackstone. She's basically a female Harry Friedman. If Sony was wise, not only would this be Pat's final season but also Wheel's final season. It's never been the same since Charlie O'Donnell passed away in 2010 and after that,Harry Friedman ran it into the ground. I stopped watching after Season 30.

I wouldn't know about that. She's shown some promise since starting last season (such as the LIDAR puzzleboard, as well as finally ending the BR minimum), and I'm pretty sure Pat's retirement would allow her to implement more positive changes going forward. And why would Sony can a successful, long-running show?

Not to mention using four consecutive posts to give your two cents...

It was right in front of her and she did not see it. She also lost $100,000 which would have been the $1,000,000 had she claimed the wedge in the third round. OUCH.
Title: Re: Wheel of Fortune Season 41 (and Celebrity S4) Discussion Thread

It's rare just for someone to pick up the Million-Dollar Wedge and hit the top prize (be it $100K or the Million) in the Bonus Round. Now we have avoided a $1,000,000 loss twice in a year. Back in 2012, there were two contestants who Bankrupted the wedge then hit the $100K, with one loss and one win.

I don't believe it has happened at all between 4/30/2012 and 4/6/2023, though we did have 8 contestants hit the $1,000,000 envelope in the Bonus Round during those 11 years.

I felt Leah was doomed when she picked WHAT ARE YOU DOING.   I was right.   That puzzle was a killer!

I felt this puzzle JUST BLUFFING was the toughest of this week, with the THING puzzle UNWAVERING VOICE a very close second.

...just to show picking THING OR WHAT ARE YOU DOING for Bonus Land often leads to disaster.   We have had only 1 out of 10 won in two weeks on Season 41 Wheel.

Appropriate that we finish with such high totals the same day that Celebrity Wheel debuts.

It's very rare for all three contestants in the civilian version to win over $20K.   That episode is definitely going to be very tough to beat.

EVENT in Bonus Land is 2 for 2.   I think we need to start picking that category.

Gosh Bellamie loves putting the Raw Deal list for the contestants to choose from before Bonus Land begins.

Only PHRASE has the lone win so far 1/4.   THING(S) 0/2.   As of today WHAT ARE YOU DOING 0/3.

And a cardinal rule for picking WHAT ARE YOU DOING for Bonus Land: AVOID the trap letters.   Tonight's contestant apparently picked them both and it doomed her.

We still can't get a $100,000 win with the category Person, and it's at 0-15 now.

Compare that to Thing which is at 19-32, Phrase at 19-31, and What Are You Doing? at 5-6 (though these also include $1,000,000 hits).

I was counting total $100,000/$1M hits since the grand prize debut in October 2001.

Counting just wins-losses for the season (and any envelope hit), Thing is 0-5, Phrase is 4-9, and What Are You Doing? is 4-6. As for Person, it's 1-2.

Some close ones, though don't feel bad for the contestant who did it as she won the main game. :P

Two Toss-Up guesses that fit perfectly but were wrong: IN THE END ZONE for the first (answer IN THE RED ZONE), and DAYTON OHIO for the second (answer CANTON OHIO). There could've been a third in Round 1, but this might be a bit of a stretch (she was correct with THE COOL SHADE OF A PALM TREE, though SHAPE still could've worked for the third word).

What I couldn't get over was Kiera's refusal to use her Wild Card on $3,500, especially the second time when she knew the puzzle, she could have used it for an extra $7,000 on the two Ks that were in the puzzle. As it was, the extra letter she called in the bonus round wasn't in the puzzle and she didn't solve it, so she let an extra $7,000 go down the drain. I noticed that Pat tried to use his mind to talk her into using it the best he could. I was honestly glad she didn't solve the bonus round, IMO, nobody deserves it after passing up free money like that. Also, had Kiera taken just one more bite of breakfast, Brianna would have possibly had the most incredible comeback in Wheel history as the two quadruple consonants she called would have totaled $48,000, which also would have served Kiera right for passing up an extra $7,000.

I hate that we usually only win the Bonus Round once a week now. Back in the day people won it 3-4 days a week and the puzzles were easy. Now they just keep repeating stuff like A QUICK JUG OF MILK DUDS and then change a single word a few months later, and nobody watches the show enough to know they do this. We had PUFFY CARDIGAN a couple years ago, and I can't even count how many times a What Are You Doing? puzzle was "____ING AROUND" over the past fiveish years. Like the lady who didn't solve PINK ORCHID, we had PURPLE ORCHID a few years ago, so I guess they'll do WHITE ORCHID next season?

The NFL Superfan tournament week was fun, great contestants and the tournament added intrigue. I hope they consider adding a few more tournaments each season going forward, but at least getting one the last two seasons is nice.

Technically this is for season 42, but noteworthy nonetheless: Ryan and Vanna were recently spotted in Hawaii filming promos for the new season, making it Ryan's first official work with Wheel: https://popculture.com/tv-shows/news/ryan-seacrest-and-vanna-white-kick-off-wheel-of-fortune-partnership-in-hawaii/ (https://popculture.com/tv-shows/news/ryan-seacrest-and-vanna-white-kick-off-wheel-of-fortune-partnership-in-hawaii/)

JayC, I think I may be wrong but Ryan and Vanna have been doing the location promos since at least November in Nashville.

But as for now, besides the tournament, this past week's NFL Week was fun with contestants who were great at the game. And count me in in also hoping to see more of these tournaments in the coming years (whether it is another sports organization, teams, etc.)

So last year was notable for havings two guys on a team for the first time. This week did it twice on consecutive shows.

Maybe two women will team up next year?

Tonight's WHAT ARE YOU DOING puzzle was hard.   There were FOUR trap letters in tonight's puzzle.

Thank goodness the G and I were NOT chosen tonight, but the A and the D proved to be fatal for tonight's couple.

We had another skunked week this week.   UGH.

I personally don't know how many losses PHRASE has but my guess is 30 for Bonus Land.   THING has NOT been picked for 2 months and is still at 7.   WHAT ARE YOU DOING has gotten harder to ace lately and last night that category just hit 15 losses.

Something a bit different this week. Instead of an actual Prize Wedge like they've always had, they've replaced it with a pair of special wedges that can be taken to the Bonus Round. While the special wedges do make it interesting, the game just doesn't feel right without a normal prize, never mind the extra weight it puts on the Trip Puzzle.

As far as I know, every syndicated episode prior to this week has had at least one basic prize (barring episodes where they may have simply forgot to add the wedge, if any such episodes exist).

Also, if you're not gonna offer a Prize Wedge this week (or on the "sixth show" that aired prior), you could at least give us easier bonus puzzles. :rollold:

Well, we got an easier puzzle this time, and now we got our first expedition win of the week. That's a $25,788 Iceland expedition on top of the $40,000 that Cynthia spun on the Bonus Wheel.

She also thought that she hit the cruise in Round 1 when she solved the puzzle, but she looked at the wrong arrow and hit $550, which according to Pat would've been "a really crappy cruise". :oldlol:

Two nights in a row that somebody brought both the Wild Card and Million Dollar Wedge to the Bonus Round.

Contestant Joey from last night got them both in Round 3, and filled in the entire puzzle by himself...though it would've been funny to see him spin just a little stronger at the end, which would've meant hitting Express with one consonant remaining and then being unable to hop on because the puzzle was already complete. :P

Tonight, contestant Courtney got both extras in Round 1 and held on to the very end. Vanna forgot about the Wild Card in the Bonus Round, however, as she started walking before Pat had to be reminded about it from offstage again. :rollold:

Well, that's a different reason for someone to be brought back to the show. Often, it's related to the ruling when someone solves a puzzle, after a Toss-Up buzzer doesn't work properly, and it could also be expected for a calculation error after spinning. They've also brought someone back after a bad bonus puzzle.

According to the comments, contestant David from Monday (who previously appeared on June 6, 2023) returned to the show because he was awarded the wrong Prize Puzzle trip? He finished June 6 in a close 2nd place, and the difference presumably would've given him the win. The puzzle last time was STAYING UP WAY TOO LATE, so any trip could've worked for that one.

I'm okay with it.  I'd also be fine if he wasn't invited back.  While an error there means missing out on something extra, it's still a pretty long shot in the Bonus Round (depending on the category & letter selection).  I have to go back for a more concrete opinion, but I pretty much lean toward not bringing him back but maybe giving him a $39,000 consolation prize.  On certain days, his outcome could be enough to win and on other days, the "correct prize" may not have any barring toward the placements (and a second place finish).

Again, I have to check back to last year, but I think there were several opportunities to win the main game, as is the case all the time.  However, that was nice for him to be brought back as it was their error, not his.  As mentioned, anything trip should have worked, so maybe they were being too lenient, but such is life.

As for the Wild Card & MDW, looks like the streak of the former came to an end, and go figure, the contestant didn't need it on her way toward solving the puzzle.  For me, everyone over the past week had a wild card, not much success; Friday's YOU SHOULD BE PROUD puzzle was a lot easier to figure out than if I had been on stage myself.  I may have gotten it right if given 20-30 seconds for the victory

I was a little surprised they gave it to him because there was at least one instance where someone took too long and lost due to the buzzer sounded before she could say it together (which I've heard Pat tell contestants to say it together before), and that was when fans complained about it and the company of the car she lost gave her a car.

That's right. She said "CHOOSING THE RIGHT", but took too long to come up with "WORD", saying the last word after the buzzer and fans complained despite rules being rules for a reason. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave Max credit despite taking a 1 second pause just so they wouldn't have to deal with backlash for the fans, it was probably better in the long run that they gave it to him rather than have people complaining and have the company end up giving him a car.

Berto was dealt the RAW DEAL list.   He picked PHRASE which I would have picked.   To be honest I was surprised it was a simple puzzle...and he made the right choice.   I had a hunch THING and WHAT ARE YOU DOING had the harder puzzles.   I was very happy Berto hit the $100,000 with the solve and that was Bonus Land win #49.

Pretty close main game after the triple Toss-Up, with just an $89 gap between two players. Figures that the Lord among them ends up gooseegging. Officially, he owns 1x1 foot of Scottish land with the title of Lord on it. :P

As for the Bonus Round, it wasn't the $100K tonight. It was "only" a $75,000 win this time. :oldlol:

(I'd literally just figured out the answer to the puzzle after the first "ding" sounded for the three-and-a-vowel.)

It's normal for Price to have trips within the continental 48, and I guess there's the occasional Wheel prize, but South Dakota felt rather unusual for a Trip Puzzle. At least it's a change from the usual Caribbean getaway.

Now...how the heck did he solve that Speed-Up of GLACIER BAY ALASKA with just an S? I actually got the last word, but no way was I getting the top row without some extra help. This is up there with HIMALAYAN SEA SALT from September.

The Bonus Round was more of the usual, though. I no-lettered it, though only because I did a retro recap with that puzzle around New Year's 2022-2023. :P

Wednesday gave us another $100,000 win! I think this is the closest someone has ever come to a buzzer-beating top prize win (counting only wins). The puzzle was WE HAD A LAUGH, and she even paused between the first two words before saying the whole thing at once.

Coincidentally, the $100K winner had an awkward moment in Round 3. There, she also paused between words when attempting to solve CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FOR THE TREES. In that case, her solve wasn't accepted, one additional reason being that she broke it up by saying "Oh, shoot!" between the 4th and 5th words. Good thing she recovered from that one!

We had a returning contestant due to an error in her original show on October 6, 2017; previously, we had a contestant from that same show appear on June 1, 2021. Both are believed to be due to the third contestant (who won the 2017 game) specifying which vowel to buy, an I, only after getting buzzed out.

So first, the Round 3 puzzle is ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE. Later, when we get to the Bonus Round, the contestant misses out on $100K, and at the reveal...Pat simply tells the contestant to turn around first. :-|

One of the few times he doesn't do just what the Round 3 puzzle said before the $100K reveal, though of course he did that afterwards.

This has to be the second time this week we had a true generic list: PERSON/PLACE/THING.

Something tells me Bellamie and company are really putting out all the stops in Bonus Land.   It has been really difficult to ace these puzzles.   And we are still stuck at 53 victories.

Jason, your pick of WHAT ARE YOU DOING...was a bad pick.   They anticipated somebody picking this category because there were several booby traps in this tough puzzle: they obviously put the G as a wasted letter pick, AND the O was a LANDMINE pick because that last word was either or.

Mary Catherine first appeared as a contestant that was really to rout the competition.  Pretty flawless early on, and getting the $1,000,000 wedge immediately, but before immediately losing it after that.  So I guess I was okay that it wasn't actually the big prize that she won, but winning the third puzzle more than helped this evening

Just saw it…I admit I had A VIDEO…I didn’t have POSTING.    I felt bad for not solving this one.

I don’t know how many losses PHRASE has in Bonus Land.  I have a hunch it’s 41, but if somebody can do stats that would be perfect.  As for WHAT ARE YOU DOING, that loss was it’s 20th of this season.   THING is stuck in neutral for 9 losses, and I think PLACE has 10 losses.

We had a good maingame though despite the unfortunate.    Over $50,000 won between all three contestants.

It’s too bad the first player didn’t have the chance at the million though…although it was VERY close between first and second.   Had he had the shot at the million, he would have been dealt the RAW deal list.

Oh one more thing, I just checked the YouTube comments on the latest Wheel of Fortune video…the famous bot and the minions are really taking over.

I’ve noticed PHRASE has been taking a break lately from the category menu.   The champ had PLACE/ THING/ EVENT and it’s been a while since we’ve had that category menu.

We’ve had three past consecutive $50,000 misses in Bonus Land.   Jeff you were smart to pick smart letters and I had that one too!   Congrats on your $50,000 hit!

It was a very tight competition between the ladies and Shannon managed to squeak one out by a few hundred bucks in the main game.   The only downer to that was she did forfeit the Wild Card to the Bankrupt in round 3.   She might have needed it for Bonus Land though.   (I still managed to get the puzzle but it was tricky)

Kate made up for losing nearly $30,000 to the bankrupt in round 1. Too bad it still stings, and losing the $100,000 on a very obvious bonus puzzle made that sting 1,000 times more painful. It was right in front of her, and she just DID NOT see it.

Why is it so hard for us to win the Bonus Round more than twice a week? This seriously reminds me of early 2010's Price when we rarely saw more than 2 out of 6 games won.

And we can't even go a week without a $100K loss anymore! I'm actually glad I missed this one because of the NFL Draft.

We've found that a lack of Bonus Round wins is nothing new for the show. They seem to have been having trouble since the 2000-2001 season, including a 17-loss streak around the winter holidays, and they didn't even have a $100,000 prize yet.

2000-2001 was also a weak season for Jeopardy! winnings overall. Yes, they hadn't doubled the clue values yet, though they still could've made clues (and Final) easier if they wanted.

Wow.   Just wow.   I was absolutely floored on tonight’s show.   Although Kate did win $16,500, she suffered like 1,000 to 100,000 cuts tonight.    Yeah I’m over exaggerating but still…a very painful Bankrupt in round 1, AND her missing a LIVING THING puzzle which she actually made easy with key letter picks.   And to top it all off…OOF.   I actually got this one with her picks.   This one really hurt because she lost a lot of money tonight.   I even felt she picked the right category for Bonus Land.   I would have chosen LIVING THING myself.

Well…we did have 2 additional Bonus Land wins this week to bring our victories to 56 for the season.  This loss was VERY painful.   I’ll just leave it at that.   Fortunately we did NOT have a skunked week.   The THING puzzle on Tuesday was the most difficult one.

30 more shows till we bid adieu to Pat Sajak.

Another example of WHY I would NEVER pick "What Are You Doing".

I just saw the episode myself.   I actually wanted Russ to pick PERSON and not pick THING OR WHAT ARE YOU DOING.  He still has a great total though.   The puzzle itself was a stinker as it had too many options.  I wish he didn't forfeit the Wild Card to the Bankrupt.   The futility streak of WHAT ARE YOU DOING is at 9 consecutive losses as we speak.

We had a close main game last night.   The Speed Up definitely was a decider, but all three contestants did well, despite one person losing a trip to the Bankrupt in Round 1, and a bad Mystery Wedge decision causes Greg to forfeit the Wild Card.

Interesting that Greg has a kid named Vanna too.

And Greg...thanks for breaking the 9 game losing streak of WHAT ARE YOU DOING in Bonus Land.

It's teams week for the civilian version of Wheel of Fortune this week.

I personally thought Karla and Braylon made a mistake of picking THINGS over PERSON and PLACE.   I felt that list for Bonus Land was a true generic list and we've had that several times lately.

It turned out to be the right call because that puzzle was simple.   I personally thought they hit the big one when Pat let Braylon open the envelope.   But $40,000 is still $40,000.   There's no cars this week, and we just hit win #60 for the season.

And THING(S) futility streak ends at 10.   Thank goodness there is no shutout in season 41 for this category.   AND the skunk stays in the cage for another week.

Thankfully the THING(S) win on Monday scared the skunk away.   We have 60 victories in Bonus Land with 4 weeks left to go.

The hardest Bonus Land puzzle from my honest opinion was the Friday episode for WHAT ARE YOU DOING.   DABBING IN MUSIC.   I've heard of DABBING IN WATERCOLORS (from Who Framed Roger Rabbit).
