Title: 2020 MLB Season
Post by: Ccook on February 17, 2020, 02:19:57 PM
Spring training is in full swing and exhibition ball is on the horizon. Among topics:

The Atlanta Braves have extended manager Brian Snitker's contract another year and extended GM Alex Anthopolous' contract three years as well as given him the additional title of president of player operations. They play their first exhibition game Saturday against Baltimore.

Rule changes are coming to MLB this year, the most significant is that a pitcher must face a minimum of three batters or go at least a half-inning. An exemption will be made in case of illness or an injury. Also, teams will use a 26-man roster, and that will increase to only 28 when September comes around (down from 40).

MLB commissioner Robert Manfred stated that retaliation against the Houston Astros over the sign-stealing scandal "will not be tolerated." He is coming under fire for not punishing Astros players in the scandal, only GM Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch.

I HATE the 3 batter minimum rule. That rule change SUCKS! :(  Yes, there is an exception if the pitcher completes the inning, but this rule change still SUCKS!

This takes away a key element of baseball, managerial strategy. It's part of the DNA of baseball to strategically use a left handed specialist to face one left handed batter or to use a relief pitcher for one hitter he has had a lot success against. Managers need to be allowed to use strategies, including playing the lefty/lefty game or strategically going to a specific matchup.

There is LITERALLY nothing good about this rule change. :(

MLB commissioner Robert Manfred stated that he doesn't want other teams to retaliate against the Astros over the sign-stealing scandal because he didn't feel like punishing the players.

FTFY.

I don't like the 3 batter minimum either, but I do somewhat see the need for limiting pitching changes in an inning. I would prefer a two pitcher per inning limit which would still leave room for specialists and matching up while installing some kind of limit on pitching changes.

Some bit of good news as the season may be about to begin as there has been an updated proposal for the 2020 MLB season to its players' union today to have a 76-game season with players getting 75% of their prorated salaries that include: eliminating draft-pick compensation for free agents for a year, a $200 million postseason pool for the players, and a postseason that ends no later than October 31.

What a great time to be a fan! 60 games, and then a 16-team playoff, which should more than make up for the 102 that were lost this season.

With regard to the 16 game playoff: The top 2 teams in each division will make the playoffs as will the next two best records in each league. Teams in each league will be seeded 1 through 8 with no first round byes. The 1st round will be best of 3 will all 3 games at the higher speeds park.

Well, we'll have to see if a short season with expanded playoffs creates unexpected contenders

I'm sure it will--more than half the teams are going to make the playoffs! There's a very good chance a team with a losing record gets in.

I guess if moneygamelover replaced "family" with fans, it would be okay.  I've seen people saying similar stuff in the past multiple times.  Meanwhile, somewhat coincidental, Kate Upton is trending on Twittter.

Really I agree with pricefan because one could still confuse it with the death of someone in the family.  I understand that Justin Verlander's absense is a big deal, but at the end of the day, apart from the injury, the rehab, and other factors, it's a sport.  He'll be back.

By the way, per Verlander, 1287518009259679745[/tweet]]that isn't necessarily true (http://[tweet).  Right now he hasn't been ruled out for the season.  Just a few weeks.  I guess Houston will evaluate him next month, and take it week-by-week

The MLB has announced their beginning with the division series as part of a bubble agreement between Major League Baseball and the players' association. That they are playing all their postseason games at bubble sites and for the first time since 1944, The World Series being played entirely at one stadium, with the Texas Rangers' new ballpark in Arlington being the stadium to host the series.

I'm okay with that.  I actually like the bubble idea.  I can see why some wouldn't, but if there are no fans, it isn't a big deal to play in your home stadium.  Moreover, as mentioned, it would suck if someone tested positive right before a winner-take-all game or a pivotal point within a playoff series
Title: Re: 2020 MLB Season
Post by: moneygamelover on September 16, 2020, 12:35:50 PM
I would 100% support the postseason in EVERY sport being played in a bubble every year forevermore.  I've thought the quality of play in the NHL and NBA playoffs has been very good this year and I think the athletes and their performances s have benefited from not having to travel during series.  Even if things get better from a health POV in ensuing years, I still think bubbles should be the wave of the future for sports postseasons forevermore. Not having to travel during series is a big plus.
Title: Re: 2020 MLB Season
Post by: LiteBulb88 on September 16, 2020, 02:47:07 PM
Once COVID is controlled (whatever that means exactly), I don't see bubbles working in the postseason for whatever sport for two reasons:

1. It's asking A LOT from the players to be isolated from society for two months, even if they have their families with them for some of that time. I agree that we've seen great play in the NHL bubble (and possibly the NBA bubble, I haven't been watching that), but players understand the need to be in a bubble this year. If you ask them to be in a bubble every year, they're going to resist and some will opt out like Tuukka Rask did this year.

2. More importantly, a non-trivial part of the playoffs in normal years is that fans are in the stands, going crazy for their team. They're a large part of home field advantage and the fans who have been supporting the team throughout the regular season should be able to be there for the postseason!

One thing I will say that FOX has done this season which is a blessing is bringing back the original MLB theme they first used from 1996-2007 (with FSN affiliates using that version of the theme mainly up to 2010). It remains unclear if they will use it in the playoffs but I hope they do.

I think it’s 50/50.  I didn’t have a problem with the NFL Theme for their League Championship Series coverage & their World Series coverage.  Probably got used to it, and it fix well enough that I wasn’t those saying it should be elusive to football.  Got a little pathetic when it started to show up during the UFC on Fox era and with their Soccer coverage.

There’s a remix used for both College Football & their College Hoops coverage, and I like both.  However, if they stick with their “classic” theme that would be awesome

The thing with the Marlins was a joke.  I don’t expect them to do much.  While it technically is possible for them to win, they were also in a position where they could’ve done worse enough to obtain the worst pick.  Really, I thought they were going to get kicked out for their violations and the outbreak due to their total carelessness.

It is still amazing that they’ve never lost a playoff series (which led to my comment); their postseason history includes 1997 & 2003 and that’s it).  They don’t even have a division title yet!

The pricing of the all-digital tickets is $40-250 for the NLCS and $75-450 for the World Series. With 10,550 seats in the regular sections of the ballpark and 950 in suites and will be sold for individual games in pods of four contiguous seats.

The pods will be distanced by at least 6 feet, and a checkerboard pattern will be used, with alternating rows of seats in the middle or at the ends and tying back unsold seats.

Also, there will be no seats sold in the first six rows within 20 feet of the field, dugouts, or the bullpen. Fans will not be allowed to the lowest level reserved for tier-one personnel of the MLB, such as players and managers.

I think Atlanta will be okay.  They could defeat L.A. or make it interesting.  Despite the fact that Atlanta knocked out teams that wouldn't have been in the postseason in any other year, it was still rather historic what they've done, IMO.  Meanwhile, L.A. has the history of falling short where it counts the most.

Either team can win, but I think it should make for a great series.  Same with NY/Tampa's Game five followed by the winner of that against Houston, love them or hate them

It'll be the Rays. Aroldis Chapman gives up a game-winning home run to a hitter he nearly beaned last month. Talk about a karmic jackpot.

I figured the Yanks would get there, prior the Game 5.  Hats off to Tampa, but sucks for New York.  Such is life.

Not that the Lakers have anything to do with what occurs in Baseball, but based on trends & success over the past quarter century, the Yankees seem to win it all around the time LA does (early 2000s, late 2000s).

Anyway, sucks New York didn't make it, but that meant the Rays are heading back to face the Astros in a rematch.  This time the stakes are much higher.  Houston is tough, but Tampa has been rather resilient over the past year.  Definitely rooting for them, and not because of whatever the Astros did.  I would've pulled for them anyway.  It'll be tough, however, but given the fact that the Rays were one of Houston's "victims" over the past couple of years, there is some momentum going into what should be a great series

This is definitely the year of the sunbelt in sports, with not just the NBA and NHL championship series featuring two from that region, but now the MLB. In addition, the SEC and ACC (mostly sunbelt schools) are the two major NCAA football leagues currently up and running. Remember, prior to 1958, all MLB teams were located in either the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic or the Midwest. And its quite fitting for baseball since all playoff series from the DS round onwards are being played in warm-weather locales. I'm all for the Rays at this point; they're in the same division as my O's yet they've never won it all. It's ironic that the ALCS and not the NLCS is being broadcast on TBS though.

Tampa Bay and Los Angeles are favored in their respective game one tilts. The Fried-Buehler matchup in Atlanta-Los Angeles tomorrow is just about an even matchup (Fried 3.27 ERA, Buehler 3.38). Fried has struck out nine in the postseason and walked nobody; Buehler has walked 6 and struck out 16.

Tampa the new Title Town?  Upon seeing that elsewhere, I'd be neutral over that concept, but things are looking good for the Rays.  Atlanta has been very dominant this postseason, so I don't think I would've been concerned with Kershaw playing.  Don't think it's over for LA if they lose Game 2, but it depends of tonight & tomorrow's games (even if they won on Wednesday)

I honestly thought that the Dodgers were going to tie it in that 9th inning. I don't have a dog in this fight but I had flashbacks to game 4 of the 1996 World Series and Jim Leyritz for a minute there. Tonight, the Braves held on by the hair of their chinny chin chin.

I wouldn't mind seeing that, personally.  Unless the Rays pull a Yankees 2004 ALCS performance.

Whomever comes out victorious from the League Championship Games will have a shot at winning the fall classic.  No big favorites, I don't think.  I'd bet for the ALCS winner; that series has been more competitive I think than the NLCS

That game took forever. According to my TV guide, the game should have been over at 11:00, not 12:05 which is when the news finally started on my Fox affiliate. Shouldn't Fox be giving more than three hours for the games this late in the season to avoid preemptions of late night programming and such?

Our Fox affiliate runs the two celebrity train wreck shows Extra and TMZ after the news followed by a repeat of the news. If the game were to, say, go extra innings and bump those two shows to later hours (or bump them from airing altogether), the fans of those shows will just have to get over it. I think Tampa is done.  I actually concluded that before Game 6.  I was actually surprised that they were fortunate enough to win Game 3, while unlucky in Game 4; losing Game 5 was very painful since the line up & starters were ones in which the Rays probably wouldn't be able to score while starting pitching was unable to last long.  Houston's bullpen is not bad, but I cannot say the same for Tampa.

In my opinion, this pales in comparison to the 2004 Yankees.  Unlike New York, the Rays are a small market team where a postseason run is a nice bonus.  Furthermore, they're playing 7 games in 7 days.  That being said, there's no excuse to blow a series lead.  The Astros are playing 7 games in 7 days as well.  The 2004 collapse was a lot more painful based on the participants; at the same time it might have been a nice treat for the other half!

I legit have ZERO gut feeling about Astros-Rays game 7. It legit won't surprise me whichever way it goes.

The aforementioned 2004 ALCS is a major reason I consider Mariano Rivera to be overrated as he blew back to back saves in games 4 and 5 of that series and played a key role in the 2004 Yankees becoming the 1st team to blow a 3-0 lead.

I predict the Braves win the NL pennant tomorrow. I think Fried gets the job done.  You can't write off the Dodgers off because of their strong lineup but Fried pitched really well in game 1 and I see no reason he can't do it again.

If Atlanta doesn't win today, they will not win the decider tomorrow. It's a long standing stigma with Atlanta teams. The team favored against them kicks it up a notch when the chips are down. I hope I'm wrong, but while my heart says Braves,  my wallet says Dodgers.

Not to mention being played at a neutral site this year, with only a small amount of fans allowed. The Rays still have no excuse if they lose tonight, they didn't get the overall #1 seed just out of luck. That said, the Astros have a lot of fight and are embracing the role of being the enemy.

The aforementioned 2004 ALCS is a major reason I consider Mariano Rivera to be overrated as he blew back to back saves in games 4 and 5 of that series and played a key role in the 2004 Yankees becoming the 1st team to blow a 3-0 lead.
That's pretty unfair. The Red Sox in 2004 were really the only team besides the Diamondbacks in game 7 of the 2001 World Series to get to him, otherwise Mariano was spectacular in the playoffs.

Fried actually pitched really well after that disastrous 1st inning. The Braves shot themselves in the foot by not being able to score. The Braves actually loaded the bases with no outs in the 2nd inning and didn't score in that inning. Meanwhile, Jansen has his business together as he recorded a 6 pitch save. With Fried off the board for the Braves, you gotta favor the Dodgers in game 7.

By Cash nearly blowing it, are you saying he should have stuck with Morton longer?

Either way, Morton has clearly established himself as elite big game pitcher. The funny thing for me is, before the game I had NO gut feel for it but now that it's over it feels as though I should have known all along that the Rays would win tonight.

Yep.  I get wanting to save him for the World Series, but they hadn't won it yet.  I get thinking he might blow it, but I'd trust a guy that's undefeated in winner-take-all games over a bullpen that is more likely to blow it.  The nerves from blowing a series-lead might've factored in.

Fortunately it turns out it was okay.  I still would have disagreed if the series was back and forth as opposed to a couple 3-game winning streaks within the series.  66 pitches in the postseason isn't much, IMO

Man, Charlie Morton turned into Buccos Morton tonight.  Not sure who'll win Game 4, but so far this postseason none of the series have been one-sided.  Well, maybe the early rounds.  Of course, the games themselves have been one-sided, but you could see LA get to 16 runs in a 16-4 rout, only to get pummeled in Game 5 by a similar score

I sorta figured that before the series started.  It's a down year for sports (NBA Finals were at an all time low as well).  We'll see how the NFL will get hit.  It'll probably best the M.A.S.H record (that hasn't been since 2010) for the 12th consecutive year, or not.  If so it won't be by much, but that might upset some of the higher-ups.  However, it's doing okay based on who's involved, and by February things may be on a better track toward a positive direction.

Speaking of involvement, it didn't help that Tampa was involved in the World Series. L.A. is a bigger market, but unless the Lakers are involved (or if it's the Y2K decade where USC was a powerhouse), sports aren't too big of a deal, IMO.  Not to disrespect the Rays, but the interest is just not there.

As for Justin Turner, whatever.  A handful have put the blame on either Justin alone or MLB.  I think it's a combination of both.  Nothing yet in terms of an aftermath, but if there happens to be another outbreak due to what happened with Turner before he was pulled and when he apparently returned, I wonder if we'll hear about it or if it will get covered up until next winter/spring, if at all
