Hey Everybody
This is for y'all to come on and discuss what you love or hate about the new changes to the Big Wheel, which debuted on September 22, 2008.

I actually like it.
The thing blends with the season 37 set a lot better, the pattern behind the tow big $ match the doors.
Also, a new carpet to go along with it, and the new font on the wheel spaces looks sharp.
I still dont know if that purple wheel is true or not. I dont get why they would want a purple wheel when all purple has been taken out of the set from last season.
-

Yes.

Because Syd is a freakin' idiot.
-
The new wheel does indeed look very classy with the rest of the set. If anyone knows, is there still a Goodson asterisk on the carpet where the leading contestant stands? (Under the new scoreboard)
-
is there still a Goodson asterisk on the carpet where the leading contestant stands? (Under the new scoreboard)
Yes, and it was visible on today's episode.
-
Please let me assure everyone there was a purple wheel. I can't prove it, but I was there and I have witnesses! :-D
I can only hope this wheel remains for a long tenure. It is amazing and very classy looking. I read elsewhere on GR that someone thought the silver and red clash but I disagree. I think the red boxes add a sharp, rigid quality to the wheel.
Is the font changed on the wheel? It just seems slightly different...
I love the shine of this wheel too... but, I can't wait to see the short tenure of the purple wheel again because, even though someone on the staff must not have liked it, the audience who saw it didn't want it changed.
-
Yes, and it was visible on today's episode.
Whoops! Thanks PIR85! Must have just missed it.
-
Is the font changed on the wheel? It just seems slightly different...
Yes. It is a very subtle change.
-
I like the new wheel, too. It actually matches the set. I think that they did a very good job updating the Wheel.
-
I think I may be the only person here who doesn't like the new wheel. I personally don't see the font change as subtle; I find it quite noticable. I thought I was going to like this design, but honestly I don't. I think the problem I have with it is the $ sign on each side panel; they're too big. I think if they were a bit smaller, more like centered on the panels then it'd look better. It is only the first day, so it's also possible that I just have to get used to it. Unlike some people here, this is the first time I've EVER seen a big wheel different than the one we seen up until Friday.
-
Daddy like!
I really like how the big dollar signs almost seem to float. It's a neat effect.
-

The font change is quite noticable. For anyone who has whatched TPiR for a long period of time, it should stick out like a sore thumb. I don't know if I really like the orange walls. I think a nice red or crimson similar to the color before would look cool. I do like the bigger light bulbs, though. Just wish they still were red.
-
If its gonna take suffering through a handful of purple wheel episodes to get this nice new updated wheel for the next 5-10 years then its all good. The new wheel is fantastic.
-
I don't know if I really like the orange walls.
I can't say I'm a big fan of the orange on the Wheel walls either.
...let that sink in for a moment.
I cannot stand the orange on the wheel.
On top of that, the silver between the spaces isn't sitting too well with me either, although I can't quite place my finger on why. I think it separates the spaces a little too much, breaking up the continuity of the wheel so it's just a bunch of 'spaces' instead of one continuous shape.
-
I thought this wheel was just the Vegas wheel. Wasn't it? Or did I miss something?
-
I loved the change they made to the wheel. It's very classy and the carpet is impressive.
-
I thought this wheel was just the Vegas wheel. Wasn't it? Or did I miss something?
Yeah Can we clear that up? And Yes I LOVE the new big WHEEL! Oh the font could be changed back but begeres can't be choosers.
-
I thought this wheel was just the Vegas wheel. Wasn't it? Or did I miss something?
The Wheel you saw today will be the permanent Wheel, save for the one week of Purple Wheel shows, and one day of Vegas Wheel.
-
Although I KNOW that the wheel we seen today isn't the vegas wheel, it kinda looked like it in size to me. The side panels look very small with their new design.
-
I'm not sure how I feel about the orange walls next to that red carpet...never liked those two colors together like that. The other changes were ok, in my opinion.
-
You know what would really look nice on the big wheel? [a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futura_(typeface)]Futura[/a]. Wish they would have went for that instead of this odd font. But this one is tolerable. Can anyone get a name for it? Was it custom-designed for the wheel? (I wonder what they did with all those old numbers...)
Not a fan of the big dollar signs. Would look better without them, with just the bare checkerboard pattern, in my opinion. Otherwise, I think the wheel looks okay.
One last question: this wheel is the same one we've had through season 36, right? Just redone?
-

I really don't think they look too bad. In fact, I think they kind of hearken back to the good old days of the purple/red/orange turntable. Without the purple on the wheel, of course.
This is the first time in my life I have seen a first-run episode without the Superball! dollar signs, but I think the wheel looks fine. The font change is odd I must say though.
-
I actually like this new wheel. The Pricedown dollar signs are on the walls for the first time since 1988, and the wheel itself has a fresh new look. I was kind of hoping for lots of smaller dollar signs on the walls like they had the first time, but I could get used to one large dollar sign on each. The new wheel blends in really well with the checkerboard set. Can't wait to see the next version of BigJon's game to play it myself! 8-)
-
I think the new wheel is okay, but there's a bit too much silver on it for my tastes. The dollar signs could've been a bit smaller, and the silver lines between spots seem really thick. I think it will grow on me over time. I do like the integration of set themes with the wheel, and the orange/red combo doesn't bother me that much. However, the number font is just awful...I don't know why they went from the Pricedown numbers to the Cheap-modernized-knock-off-of-Pricedown font...
-

As far as I know it's the same wheel that was used through season 36. I think the numbers are just bigger rather than the panels being smaller. Just an optical illusion.
-
Font's a bit edgy but I'll get used to it.
-
The new Big Wheel looks cool. But be prepared. If I understand the airdates right a purple wheel show will air October 3.
-
It's hard to fully appreciate the new Wheel unless you're watching the show in HD.
Sparkly. Very sparkly. And I like it.
-

I wouldn't use Futura as a font on the wheel at all: if you did, the wheel would look like something out of Sesame Street, because Futura is the basic typeface they used for their numerals. I'd have definitely kept the pricedown-ish typeface for the numbers, but I just don't see why this "subtle change" that I don't find so subtle at all was even necessary to begin with. It's not like people couldn't read what the wheel landed on for the past 33 years.
I also don't see why they didn't make the purple-wheel shows the first of the new season. It's not going to make a lot of sense to people at home -- at least those who bother to notice -- that we go from the current wheel with the upgrades to the current wheel with the purple look to a slightly smaller wheel that looks more like the old design to the current wheel with the new upgrades. It would have been much better (and less distracting) to stack the shows so that you had Vegas wheel, purple wheel, then current.
-

No, that's the Vegas wheel episode.
-
Wait a minute....is the vegas wheel episode Oct. 2nd or 3rd? One thread says the 2nd, another says the 3rd....
And one other question...why is it that they're airing this episode so early. I figured they'd save it for the purple wheel episodes because it's differnt from the new design. Maybe it's because they want it to be "subtle"....one episode mixed into 50 rather than an entire week of a totally different big wheel (from the rest of the season that is).
-
My only gripe is that it appears the orange on the sides panels of the wheel match the orange of Door #1, so the wheel doesn't "pop out" as much as it did when they were solid red. And I love the idea behind the giant dollar signs, but they're just too friggin' big. If they were just reduced six inches on all sides, it would make all the difference.
I would've liked to see two shades of red rather than the red/orange combo, but I still think the new wheel looks AMAZING. Just the update it needed.
-
Anyone have a pic of the new wheel design? I was at school and missed it. :(
-
I personally love the new Big Wheel, it's very shiny!
The font doesn't bother me either. Personally it looks the same to me when it's at an angle or from a distance.
-
I would like a pic of the purple wheel when it airs, I won't see it.
-
The new wheel is very nice. It adopted the Alternating Square theme nicely and the large dollar signs are a thematic improvement as well. They are well constructed, not some cheap plywood cutouts.
The silver wedge dividers aren't any wider than the previous versions. They just catch more light than before. The typeface used on the actual numbers do look different but I really could care less. The red 1.00 appeared a deeper red than before.
It's good to see they finally ditched the red chaser lights and brighten it with more white bulbs in the new alternating size pattern used elsewhere.
Gas Money is a good game. I think the lack of dramatic reveal is that Drew hasn't figured out how to put drama into it. It will come. The square cards are a little bland, however.
-
I just found a newly posted video of the new wheel in action:
Incase anyone missed it (like me :P)
-
I like the new big wheel design. It'll be interesting to see what the Vegas wheel and purple wheel designs looked like. The big wheel version I grew up with had the pink 'Pricedown' dollar signs on a red background, the new version at least matches the rest of the set.
-
Can't stay I'm thrilled with the large dollar signs on the panels. But I like the makeover. (Ironically, when I suggested last year that the carpeting didn't suit the new set, and it should be replaced, I got hammered in here...)
-
It looks great, except one tiny thing: the lights ought to move a bit faster.
-
Not to get too far off topic, but do we know the air dates of any of the episodes that feature the purple wheel?
-
I wish that Syd hadn't tinkered with the Wheel to begin with, but since he did, I am glad that it has been restored to a somewhat reasonable appearance. The giant dollar signs on the side walls are just a bit too loud for me, and I'm quire irked that they didn't design the new numbers correctly after the old ones.
-
did anybody notice that there are no red lights to go with the white lights on the wheel? i noticed this yesterday and figured that this was the vegas wheel, everyone here proved me wrong. just my opinion.
-
The Vegas wheel was designed to be a replica of the old wheel (well, 7/8ths replica at least), so if the original had red lights, then the Vegas wheel would have them as well.
-
The new Big Wheel set looks a lot better on TV than it did in artist renditions posted here (the ones that did them still did a great job though!) and the pictures that were available online. I really like it except that I wish the previous font was still being used.
-
I really don't mind the pattern on either side of the wheel, I am growing quite fond of the all-white lights, and I actually really like the silver glitter. I like the font, too.
But the one thing that just doesn't sit well with me is the border on the carpet. I mean, yes I like the squares better than the hypocycloids, but too much is overkill. Did they have to add the squares around the edges?
On a side note, has anyone noticed that the numbers "5" and "15" aren't teal anymore, but green? And, also, I'm loving the split screen separator being silver!

I'll accept that compliment, LOL
It looks really nice in person I must say though.
Now if this FONT could be created since it seems to be a spinoff of the compstyle, that would be a good thing...
-
On a second day of viewing, I had this thought: The orange in the new big wheel design is almost an exact match to the orange colors on door #1. I like the integration of the square motif onto the big wheel, but it seems weird to have the color so close between the two. I think it might have been a bit better to do use another derivative of red instead (or maybe even pink, like the old design with pricedown dollars).
-
On a side note, has anyone noticed that the numbers "5" and "15" aren't teal anymore, but green?
I noticed. That's really my only major complaint about the wheel. Teal on green looks way better than green on green.
-
Amidst all of the hype and worry... I'm glad there is STILL a Big Wheel to enjoy!
I think the new font makes the Wheel just that much more "retro"...
-
I think the new font makes the Wheel just that much more "retro"...
Considering it had the same style of numbers on it for 36 years, I wouldn't call the new font exactly "retro". If anything, its better described as "modern".

Sounds almost exactly what I just said (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php?topic=8590.msg122121#msg122121). :P Glad someone agrees!

So THAT'S what's different. I knew something wasn't right about the 5 and 15. I agree they looked better in teal, but I think they'll work just fine in their new color.
-
I don't know if it's just me, but when I saw the wheel, I immediately thought that the dollar space was smaller then the others.
I know that this can't be true, but I can't help shaking that idea.
To get a better idea of what I am talking about, take a look at this picture (http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/5158/allhottieshowdown192308uw7.jpg) (courtesy of Heels).
Did anybody else think the same thing?
-
It does look smaller! I think that may have to do with the silver bars between each space. The $1.00 always filled the entire space; top to bottom, left to right, so the thicker silver spacers make it look smaller. Isn't it technically impossible to make the space smaller because of the shape of the wheel? It's exactly a circle, more like a double-decagon (20 spaces) if you look at it side-on.
-
Didn't there used to be lights in the black border area.
Another note is I don't think that red lights would show up anymore with the orange and silver look
-
wouldnt it be funny if somehow, someway we all think the purple wheel looks pretty good when we finally see it...
-
You know, I was thinking the exact same thing...
-

I have a strong feeling we'll all be agreeing with Drew's opinion....
-
Yes, because we all agree with his opinion of Three Strikes so much...
-
I'm very impressed. Changes to the wheel were something long overdue, and even if we (eventually) suffer a week with the dreaded Purple Wheel for it, these were the right ones.
-
About Drew's opinion...wasn't his statement about the purple wheel based on the fact that the spaces were purple?
-
Changes to the wheel were something long overdue
Oh, please explain to me how changes to anything on the show can be "long overdue."
wasn't his statement about the purple wheel based on the fact that the spaces were purple?
I know the Wheel was described as being "very purple," but do we even know which parts of it were purple? The reason I ask this is because the black spaces on the Wheel really don't like they've been repainted, at least as far as I can see, though I could be very wrong.
-
I know the Wheel was described as being "very purple," but do we even know which parts of it were purple?
Yes (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php?topic=7906.0).
-
Anybody know an airdate for a purple wheel episode? I know its gonna look like crap but I'm so damn courious.
-
If anything, the purple shows will be a fun collectors item ten years down the road.
-
The new wheel is sweet. The 8's look like the number on Dale Earnhardt Jr's NASCAR car
-
My biggest qualm with the new wheel is the Green on it. It's (or at least it seems to me) more faded than the old green, and I don't think it looks as nice.
-
What I like:
-the border around the carpet: Nice orange trim, matches the patterns well, and I like the continuity with door #1.
-green hue change: I like the mint-green 5 and 15 spaces - not that i didn't like the others, but the mint green is a nice change in pace and aesthetically pleasing.
What I do not like:
-too much silver: Its as if TpiR loves to use as many colors as possible as often as possible (ref. 90's big doors, new race game curtain, etc.), and putting silver on EVERYTHING wheel related just makes it too garrish for me.
What I am not sure about yet:
-new font of the numbers: is it me or do the numbers look more like "Safe Crackers" numbers than they do big wheel numbers? The 8's are strikingly similar, though I am aware they are different. I like Safe crackers font, but not sure if I like it enough to put them onto the big wheel.
-
I really like the new design with the giant pricedown dollars and flashing lights, but the blockier number font looks a bit strange.
-
they do kinda look like safe crackers numbers now...
-
I think it's just that squareish version of the Pricedown font.
-
I remember watching Match Game 78 first on CBS and then on the GSN episodes when they went from the long lived 73-78 set and went to the new set. The first week's episodes had the bottom tier (the one where Richard Dawson ruled the roost) had a dark blue background but was later changed to light blue.
-
i keep looking for the new row of lights everyone keeps saying was added but i'm not seeing it. the only change i make is that theyre all white now instead of white and red
-
i think the "new row" of lights would be the lights right next to the actual wheel...the ones that look like the lights around the big door.
-
Considering it had the same style of numbers on it for 36 years, I wouldn't call the new font exactly "retro". If anything, its better described as "modern".
Not to nitpick (but it looks like I'm going to anyway) let's not forget that there was no wheel until 1975.

too true.. my error.. fingers faster than the brain
