This is the opening to the first show of Season 32, which aired on September 22, 2003. Barbara Bloom and Syd Vinnedge appear, and Syd gives an interesting speech about the show and Bob.
-
Did I hear 4 years? Did they know Bob was going to retire after season 35?
-
No, the staff nor anyone else knew that Bob would retire in less than four years. In fact, when Bob made the announcement, he signed a five-year contract before that (which would mean he would host until about 2011 during Season 39 or Season 40), with a clause that allowed him to retire, but that decision had a deadline.

Maybe Syd was talking about his own contract then...

I think the "4 years" bit by Syd was a reference to how long one term in the office of the President of the United States is.
-
Its just ironic that Barker did in fact retire after 4 years. lol
-
I don't think it's too ironic, but coincidental, yes. What always annoyed me about that show was how Syd just basically snatched the microphone away from Bob.

Given the fact that this aired about 6 months before the 2004 primaries, I think Syd meant "What do you want Bob to do in the next 4 years? Be President, or host The Price Is Right?"
-
This episode is also significant beause it is the last screen appearance of Rod Roddy, who died a little over a month after this aired. It was the last week he was on the show, as Randy West did the week after.
Was I the only one that wanted Syd to be struck by a falling asteroid there? How dare he snatch the microphone out of Bob's hands like that.
-
Yup, I found that to be completely rude. And not just because it was Bob, either. It could have been anyone standing there with the mic., but to just snatch it like that...I know, it's not anything that'll stop the world or begin World War III, but a guest appearing on stage should know better than to do that.
-
It didn't seem to bother Bob at all........and I forgive Syd b/c he said all those kind words about Bob and the show.
-
Oh I forgive him too, but he should have known better than to commandeer the host's microphone in the first place, no matter if it's Bob Barker or Patrick Wayne...ok, maybe it's fine if it's Patick... :P Not that this is any earth-shaking matter in the first place...it's just fun to point out I guess.
-
Wow, it feels so weird matching Rod Roddy's announcing with that turntable design, because he had so few shows with it.
-
Todd, you forgot to mention Rod's soprano intro!!! :P
That said, he sounded very great on this clip----you wouldn't have been able to imagine that his health was on the decline.
Syd's comments were quite silly.

Notice I only mention it when it happens during Bob's introduction. ;)
