Mega Lonestar failure today.

Wow, what an absolutely pitiful show. I don't care if they're popular, Lonestar was bad. I don't just mean them being there was bad (which, of course, it was) but they genuinely had really crappy music. It annoyed me how we had to have three quickies and no SP game just so they could play 10-second snippets of bad music. One of the worst shows of the season.

Mega Lonestar failure today.

Well, I guess there won't be a lot a participation from you in this thread today.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the show came off.  Lonestar wasn't as obtrusive as they could've been and how awesome was their version of the theme?  They need to put that on iTunes or something.

$10,000 two days in a row ain't half bad either.  Drew has really showed me the past few weeks how much he enjoys doing this show.  And I can't say how happy I am about that.  When I know the host and contestants are having a great time, it just makes it so much more fun to watch.

One of the worst shows of the season.

"Roger, this puts us at how many 'Worst shows of the season?'"

Can we get an eggcrate toteboard for this number?

I disagree with sjd and Wayoshi's sentiments. I think the Lonestar addition was well-done. They pulled it off a lot better than the indie rock band earlier this season.

The only complaint is that Budget Mode has gotten ridiculous.

My recap (http://www.floridafreeways.org/recap-100617.html). I am back from vacation, so I am working on the two recaps I have missed, including my first recap of the new pricing game, Rat Race.

A LED monitor would be more adequate (if you have more numbers, create a thinner font). :-D

Even if one contestant won more than $40k in cash and prizes, Lonestar appearance was certainly costly and no doubt that they are the top winners on the show today. :-?

Poor budget control, again.

I have nothing against Lonestar themselves, but TPIR dosen't need a "house band." Or at least it shouldn't.

Well...as a fan of all genres of music and a fan of Lonestar throughout my childhood, I have to say that band just isn't the same without Rich McDonald as lead singer.  When I think of Lonestar, I hear Rich McDonald at the helm.  This Keith Urban lookalike that they have as lead singer now just isn't the same by any stretch of the imagination.  Maybe I'm just stuck in 1995 or something. :-)

Just interested...how would they assume that someone could fit that large, box-shaped satellite radio interface into the dashboard of a Ford Focus?  An older Focus where the audio interface is square-shaped and near the top of the dash?  Yes.  A newer Focus? They've seriously overhauled the dash.  I'm pretty sure it would be impossible to install and use in that specific car.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah I did notice that. I knew I heard rumors McDonald had left, because the band doesn't sound the same. McDonald had the great voice.

As for my show review:

Cover Up: 18918...Ouch

One Right Price: Good job. El Cheapo Billiards table

Danger Price: Television is bad for your health.

Showcases: Meh, could have been way worse.

I'll give the episode a B-

I don't mind  Lonestar honestly.

Cover Up: Another classic example of not messing up on purpose. Shame, I wanted him to win too.

One Right Price: I agreed with her, but only because I thought the pool table was more expensive than $2K.

Push Over: Nice. I thought it’d be slightly more expensive though.

Range Game: Bummer. I thought it’d be towards the higher end of the scale.

Pass the Buck: I thought #2 had the car. At least she got a big cash prize.

Danger Price: Well, he started off good, but went downhill quickly. The TV seemed to likely be the danger price.

Showcases: It was fairly evident that Julia was under Kendall was way over. Kendall was doubting her bid right from the start, and she should have changed it to something lower. I knew a party boat would be pricy and that combined with the trip definitely made for a price higher than $21K. At least she was only off by $5K, and because Kendall was over, it didn’t matter anyway.

On a scale of 1 to 5, today’s show gets a 3.

Cover: OUCH.

Push was a gimme today.

Range could've been won; the price wasn't right next to the top of the scale like Greco's been putting it lately.

Buck: Now this is kinda getting ridiculous IMO - another $12,000 Aveo offered for those who didn't watch.

Showcases: Could've been worse.

I couldn't see the faces too well but I started wondering if we were all talking about the same Lonestar in another thread. I got confused because of the lead singer with long hair because I knew Rich M. had short hair.

I can see the Keith resemblance, but would've said the Billy Ray look alike.

I'll go ahead and say what has been said in reference to other "special" shows: Maybe once in a while is OK, maybe. I kinda liked the opening with the band's rendition of the theme, but hearing them play it once was enough for me. Again, and again? No.

Also, to be frank here, I thought it was very unprofessional (at least) for Drew to tell Shantra to go and say hi to the band after she won her game. They were performing(!), and had nothing to do with her winning.

Nice to see Pass The Buck again (one of my faves). And with Lonestar at Door #3, regular viewers should have had no problem figuring out where the Range Game prize was going to be.

Um...Lonestar was pointless. Hearing any band play the show's theme is cool, but why have them play the theme when Walking is normally played? Why not have them play a version of Walking? Plus, they were so...inconsistent on where they were used. I thought it was very unnecessary, but if they're gonna do this crap, at least execute it properly.

Um...wow.  Having a house band is really not a good idea.  Everything they did outside of the Showcase sounded very wrong, and Drew just would not shut the hell up about them.

That said, the showcase was actually quite good.  It needed a better introduction (or an introduction, really), but it flowed well, and Cody Collins was a good speaker.

1 Right Price was not supposed to be won.  That's two days in a row now that we've had a "Dob-stopping."

Another $12,000 car.  Wow.

Was Ronald trying to lose Danger Price?  Those were some awful guesses...his first (and only) two picks were the prizes I'd have left for last.
Title: Re: Recap -- 6/17/10
Post by: tpirfan28 on June 17, 2010, 07:47:40 PM
I always thought it would be kinda cool to try out a house band for an episode of Price.  Now that it's happened...I don't know.  It seems to me they tried to promote the heck out of something that blended into the background.  They played the open, the first one-bid, the theme at its respective points, and bumper music.  Seems like they didn't do nearly enough.  Or too much.  What they did just didn't seem to work.

PROS:  Putting them in door #3 rocked.  For a stage with limited space, that worked.  I might have tried door #1, but I don't know how the blocking would have worked with that.  The theme was okay, good enough to be a pro.  Showcase was really good - helped that the main person could talk well and project.

CONS:  Shame they couldn't throw a trailer or country-themed showcase together.  Little bit of country twang would have been much better than the standard country cue.  They could have also had a greater musical influence in the program - maybe the think music in Cover Up and the fee items?

FAIL:  Damn Drew...the opening ground to a halt.

Wow, Lonestar themselves honestly weren't that terrible overall, but Drew turned in one of his worst hosting performances since Season 37 and that caused the show to be near unwatchable. The focus just was on Lonestar and not the contestants the entire time, to the point where contestants were instructed to go say hi to Lonestar after they won their pricing game, and the poor contestant who won $10,000 in the first showcase showdown didn't even get any music and clangs to celebrate because Lonestar just had to play us to commercial. Then Drew just did stupid things like prolonging the opening for no reason (it took 50 seconds longer than normal today), and instructing the contestant in Pass The Buck to run over to their car while Rich was describing groceries.. Maybe in some universe a house band can work on TPIR, but Drew Carey just can't focus on the show when these things are happening, and that turns the show into a mess.

As for Lonestar themselves, not bad - they weren't overly intrusive themselves. Their showcase, as mentioned by others, was better than the Dollyrots, because at least they stopped singing long enough to present it themselves and the music they provided was listenable. Oh, and by the way we played some pricing games today, and they went as normal. The entire show would not have been that bad if not for Drew not being able to go 30 seconds without saying 'Lonestar'. And so you all know, Lonestar ASKED to be on the show themselves, and here they get a free 1-hour promo. We may have more bands asking to do this in the future.

Timings:
Cover Up (5) - 4:08
One Right Price (3.5) - 3:12
Push Over (4) - 3:32
Range Game (4) - 3:08
Pass The Buck (5.5) - 4:59
Danger Price (4.5) - 3:48
Total time (26.5): 22:47

I thought the house band thing was pulled off pretty good. Just enough -- although I was in and out during the show, so it might've been overkill had I been sitting in my favorite chair. Then, maybe I would've given it a raspberry. Only one person would dare give me the raspberry.

Now, my opinions on Lonestar.

Simply put, this was all one big commercial for Lonestar.  The Lonestar showcase was better than the Dollyrots showcase they did several months ago, and Lonestar themselves weren't all that bad, but Drew just kept plugging them throughout the show, and that made the show pretty much unwatchable.  In addition, Lonestar played into the commercial breaks, fee plugs, and even SCSD#1, when the contestant won $10,000 on the wheel.  IMO, they should only have appeared in the Showcase and not playing throughout the show as a "house band".
Title: Re: Recap -- 6/17/10

They shouldn't have been on there period IMO. This is The Price is Right, not a music concert.

They felt really out of place.  The opening is not the same with Walking.  At one point Drew told the contestant to go see Lonestar... not the prize she just won.  WTF?

Perhaps they could have had the spot in the showcase, but that should have been the extent of that!

So, I tuned in to CBS today at 11E/10C this morning, only to find out that The Price is Right was preempted by a Lonestar concert.

Game show.  House band.

Those two terms go together like chocolate cake and haggis.  What was the open?  Drew's ADHD kicked in again and he had to repeat everything he said 5 times.

You have to have the Walking music at the beginning.  It sets the tempo for the show.  At that point, Lonestar wasn't even introduced yet.  It just felt weird.

I'm not in favor of guest stars at all, but if you have to have one, just show them once during an IUFB or during a showcase.  The whole entire show?  It was Lonestar with pricing games.  THE CONTESTANTS ARE THE HEART OF THE SHOW.  Not today.  I long for the days of a show hijacked by Jack Wagner.

Don't get me wrong;  Lonestar didn't perform badly.  It's just that they don't belong on The Price is Right.  Ever.

Hey CBS, go ahead and cancel the show.  It is sick and should be put out of its misery.  If the show were a dog, it would have been put down by now.  It's the end of the season; just pull the plug if Fremantle is going to produce crap like today's show.

And so you all know, Lonestar ASKED to be on the show themselves, and here they get a free 1-hour promo. We may have more bands asking to do this in the future.

...that scares me more than if they would have asked them to be on the show...

I shut it off after the first two games (though turned it on for the showcases). This is a game show, which is supposed to be about games...and the only emphasis that seemed to be placed on the show today was a band. It didn't help that Drew kept going on and on and on and on and on about the fact that they had Lonestar on the show, wasting everyone's time. For a show that's supposed to be pressed on time, they sure like wasting it...

I will admit, the second showcase was pretty decently done...though that should have been the extent of Lonestar's appearance.

To me, this was not The Price is Right today. It was some poorly-produced show about Lonestar that happened to feature pricing games. At least that's what it seemed like to me.

Simply put, house bands belong at 11pm...not 11am.

OVERALL: 1/5.

Wheel of Fortune isn't as consistent as The Price Is Right on anything, though -- they don't even always have the same set from week to week.  Nobody gives it a second thought when they change something.

I agree. That was very frustrating, and to have three in a row. Fail on Adam's part.

The sad part about all of this is that Drew, at some point in the show, stated that this was his "favorite day since he's been on the show," or something to that effect.  It's pretty clear that Drew doesn't "get it."

THE CONTESTANTS ARE THE HEART OF THE SHOW.

+1 : Lonestar should not be, Drew neither.

-1 : I think the pricing games are. You can switch contestants, the game is as enjoyable (unless this contestant wastes one minute with fake cries).

He really doesn't. Sad.

Note to Producers: Ya wanna have musical guests on TPIR? Here's how you do it without sacrificing gameplay time (and more importantly, commercial break time): save your musical guests for a showcase; collaberate with the talent (or the talent's handlers) on writing it so everyone's comfortable, it flows nicely & is worthy of their representation in it; rehearse, rehearse, REHEARSE the *s* out of it, and then--now this is the most important part--tape the musical guest performing their current/past hit during a break or after the show and feature it on priceisright.com.

Everyone wins under this formula: the musical guest gets their plug, the show's audience gets to see The Price Is Right and the website gets some traffic.

Wheel of Fortune isn't as consistent as The Price Is Right on anything, though -- they don't even always have the same set from week to week.  Nobody gives it a second thought when they change something.

True. But, when Wheel has a band on its only when they're on location and usually its a college band because of college week.

Cover Up:  Seemed like a little bit of an evil setup to me.
SCSD#1:  A $10,000 winner 2 days in a row - very cool!
Pass The Buck:  $5,000 is a lot better than nothing.

Pretty good end to the week, IMHO.  Pretty cool having Lonestar there, too.

One of the worst I've seen in the last 20+ years that I have been watching TPIR regularly.    8-O

Will it get any better next year?

I think he said it was "one of" his favorites. While I think Drew likes stuff like guests bands more than other people do, I also think his comment was in part an effort to be a good hosts to his guests. The lead singer looked so forlorn; you'd think Drew would want to make them feel like A-listers.

It was pretty sad that the singer seemed to stand there for much of the time. The house band concept didn't work very well in this episode. I don't know if it's impossible for it to work. But they'd probably have to take a different approach. For instance, use a band that is known for it's instrumental skills so they could be better integrated. If the band isn't well integrated with the flow of the show, it just feels like an interruption.

That Cover Up set-up was just begging for $11,112 to be the first guess. I think Drew might be giving a bit more emphasis that they only need one number right in hopes that someone will use strategy. He also pointed out the good news/bad news nature of getting the first three digits with the first guess.

Hey CBS, go ahead and cancel the show.  It is sick and should be put out of its misery.  If the show were a dog, it would have been put down by now.  It's the end of the season; just pull the plug if Fremantle is going to produce crap like today's show.

Wow. I wouldn't go that far.  It was just a band.  I'm not 100% crazy about it...Unless it was a band I enjoyed, then I'd be all over it.  But its cool they try new things and try to keep the show fresh.

I will admit, I did say a couple of rash things in the moment in yesterday's post.  Do I want TPIR to go away?  No.  Does it pain me to see it in it's current form? Yes.

(But if it did go away for a few years it would open the door to reruns on GSN.  Just saying.)

Reruns on GSN just keep fanboys' denial going. No good.

But it shouldn't be the focus of the show either.

Oh I wish!  But have you noticed how incredibly lame GSN has become now?  I remember 10 years ago when they played all the great old game shows:  Tic-Tac-Dough, Super Password, Blockbusters, Price is Right, Dawson's Family Feud, Press Your Luck, etc.  Those were glory days!

Now they just show Deal or No Deal and poker shows over and over and over.   (insert spin-hasn't-gone-all-the-way-around boo here)   :D

I just watched this episode and I think the Lonestar gimmick would`ve worked if they played ALL the music on the show,  not just the theme or the  music going into or coming back from commercials.  I was hoping to hear their version of the CoD cue or some of the other classic music (which we STILL hear, just not that often).

Yeah I did notice that. I knew I heard rumors McDonald had left, because the band doesn't sound the same. McDonald had the great voice.

Heard the rumors? Dude, he left three years ago.
