I was amused that there was nothing special about this episode.  Beyond the modified logo, having all college students in the audience (which is par for the course, anyway), and having a bizarre set of products in Check-Out, it was a completely normal show.

Speaking of Check-Out, that was just plain mean.  There is no way anyone was going to win that.

Lucky $even wasn't supposed to be won, either...which made the fact that it was won all that much sweeter.  The next contestant wasn't supposed to get four Plinko chips, either.

They actually moved the Balance Game scales at the right speed today!

God, I hate that routine Drew has the Beauties do in Switch? now.

Drew's actions during the credits lead me to believe he knew this was going to be Rich's last show.

That was my impression to steve. Even his calldown window, they showed him doing the whole calldown instead of whisking it away half way.

Is this the first time that a first-run show has been aired in August? I'd be surprised.

Nice way for TPIR to come back after almost two months off. The first half was loaded with great wins.

Lucky Seven was pretty funny... the one time they go back to normal with the five at the end, and it's won. Take that, Fingers.

Yet another historic moment query... has Check Out ever been over after only four GPs? That was atrocious.

BEST CONTESTANT OF THE DAY: Brianna
SHOW GRADE: 3

New shows have been aired in August during Seasons 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 38.  In fact, Seasons 5-9 started in August.

Drew's actions during the credits lead me to believe he knew this was going to be Rich's last show.

Rich said as much today on his Facebook page.. and still sounded quite bitter over the whole thing.

"Hey TPIR fans... watch my last "new" show today. It's our "Back to School" special that we held off on airing until now. Big hugs and show of support from Drew at the end (let's see if they edited all that out of the show). Enjoy!"

Today's opening reinforced why the intro moves way too quickly now. Shortly after Rich called down the fourth contestant, they cut to a shot of the third contestant moving down into the Row, and we don't see the fourth one until they start to pan across the Row!  Absolutely terrible.  They really need to go back to using not only the entire opening spiel, but waiting until the previous contestant is in the Row before moving on to the next one.

Drew, having a 0.5 GPA in college is not the kind of thing you want to brag about on national television...

Holy crap, Lucky $even was won! Holy crap, more than $20K was won in Plinko!

I wonder what Drew does with all of the t-shirts he is given...

How long has Balance Game's display been on the same stand as the bags?

...where in the world does a package of filler paper cost $4.64?!?

God, I hate that routine Drew has the Beauties do in Switch? now.

I was going to comment on this, too...the "don't run into each other!" bit was funny the first few times he did it, but  now that they're actually "running into each other" it's gotten old and completely unfunny. Just switch the prices and be done with it.

I have to ask...when is a college student going to find time to take a nine-day tour of Europe?

Yay extra face time for Rich at the end of the show (and even bigger yay for not editing it all out!) I will miss you, Rich.

OVERALL: 3/5. The first half of the show was decent, with some big wins...unfortunately, it went downhill from there...and man, it makes me miss school that much more.  But, overall, fairly decent show, and free of the usual waste-of-time antics that seem to plague most of the other "themed" shows.

Well not much to say about this one except for the wins:
Pushover - Nice job
Lucky Seven - that so wasn't meant to be won but was anyway miraculously just like the time with taylor on his 19th birthday
Plinko - Nice
Balance game - this shoulda been won
Check out - That was so evil we had a wipeout
Switch - This also shoulda been won too.
3 for 6 show i wonder what it'll be for 8/31.

God, I hate that routine Drew has the Beauties do in Switch? now.
I don't think Drew makes them do anything. In my opinion, he just makes his running joke, and the models ad-lib to various degrees or play it straight depending on where they fall in the continuum of model humor. Lanisha is in to hamming it up, so we got a particularly demonstrative near crash this time. If Drew were making them do it, you'd see all the models do the same thing. If the switchers were Amber and Rachel I wouldn't expect to see the same things, because the models have their individual styles.

It's like Balance Game. Drew almost always jokes about the model carrying over the bag, but some models play it straight and some play along. Manuela going for the physical comedy in Balance Game was consistent with her style of modeling.

Gwen's more likely to fully embrace cheesy dancing during the closing credits. And so on. Personally, I like comedy in the modeling, and I like the Switch crashing schtick. But I also like the variety in the model's personalities, so I don't mind more restrained styles as well.

Mohammad seemed shocked when he didn't win the cell phone with his $50 bid. Seems he didn't pay attention to the calling plan part and doesn't watch the show.

I'm surprised that Drew didn't mention the anti-microbial feature of the pencils (like he was giving details like size for other Check-Out products). That's a pretty swanky feature for a box of pencils, so emphasizing that might have led the contestant to price it higher.

Drew, having a 0.5 GPA in college is not the kind of thing you want to brag about on national television...
It sounded like self-effacing humor, not bragging, to me.

This was actually a decent show... nothing about it felt stupid, and Drew was, for the most part, pretty good.

Lucky $even and Plinko... both amazing. Wow. I really was not expecting either of those to be won - especially in Plinko, the contestant was really not meant to get that many chips.

The theme was subtle, but it was there. It was mainly just offering prizes a little more suited to students - that was fine. At least we didn't get any designer crap.

Check Out was hard... but it was for a car, so I don't mind it being set-up that way when a car is at stake. I'm usually the first to call out Kathy on a really hard setup, but that setup was no harder than the setups Roger created when the game was played for a car.

Drew's schtick in Switch - yeah, it's a little annoying, but it doesn't bug me too much. It may not be as clever, but when you get down to it, it's the same sort of thing as Bob's Range Game "37 hours" joke.

The showcases were pretty good, and yay, only one trip in the showcase!

A couple of random thoughts at the end here:
-I liked that backdrop used on the plasma screen for the Europe trip in Showcase 2. It reminded me of when they used to use a variant of the old Barker wall in two-prize games.
-Stan really used crappy cues today - way too much guitar-based stuff.

But overall, a good show.

No different than the 37 hours gag.  They're both stupid and stale.

The extended credits on CBS.com were really fun and a nice little sendoff for Rich.  They all totally knew that show was it.

Boy, that was some expensive paper in Check-Out today. And I was expecting a "6" or a "4" at the end of the price in Lucky $even the way the numbers were set up.

I'll miss Rich as well.  :-(

Spring break. Summer. Winter break. Mardi Gras break (if you're in Louisiana). There are plenty of opportunities to take a 9 day trip to Europe.

Lucky Seven:  What a great win!
Plinko:  Very nice haul!
Check Out:  What an evil setup!  How the heck was that paper more than $4?!
Switch?:  I really don't think they should have groceries for a year in games like this where you have to try to guess he price.

Pretty good show, IMHO.

Good luck, Rich!  I'll miss you!

See, the funny thing is, that prize has been in a showcase or two hasn't it?  One more unpriceable item that can now be priced.

This show was not without its problems, but it had several hidden gem moments. In particular, Plinko today reminded me of how exciting Plinko can be at its best. Not just the big win, but the fact that she was so excited both to play it and to win that much money, and that there was great energy throughout. Just a great segment. Lucky $even and the showcase reveal were also fun (and yay for a two car clean house day!)

Check-Out today reminded me that they seemed to not know the difference between "hard but fair" and "completely unwinnable", unfortunately. That was just mean. Balance Game today was bizarre as well, but in a different way. I noticed the contestant had a few minutes of confusion over whether to place the $7000 bag on the scale or whether to place the $1000 and $6000 bags on the scale for a total of $7000. Perhaps setups like that where two of the bags add up to the third bag should be avoided in the future, to cut back on this confusion.

It was clear that everyone was intent on giving Rich a good sendoff today, and you can see that in the extended credits on CBS.com, which I highly recommend people watch. Plus it's rare we get to see credits that extended in the first place (you'll see what I mean when you watch).

And, why not, the timings:

Push Over (4) - 2:54
Lucky $even (4.5) - 4:01
Plinko (5.5) - 5:56
Balance Game (4)- 3:47
Check-Out (5.5) - 5:45
Switch? (3.5) - 3:16
Total time (27): 24:39

I have to give props to the crew for selecting prizes that were practical for college students.  On the Spring Break show, if you'll recall, the prizes were completely impractical and were not realistic for on-campus living.  On the other hand, I could see myself using all the prizes in the first Showcase on campus.  The desk, computer, TV, and mini-fridge would actually fit right into a dorm, and the PT Cruiser could be parked on campus without a problem.

Kudos to them.  I know they read this board (whether they want to admit it or not!), so thank you for listening to what actual college students have to say.  We appreciate it when you give us prizes we can use on campus all year. :-)

Well, a "fresh" episode. Let's see if it's like the rest of 'em...

Push Over: I felt like I just saw this game yesterday (No, wait. It was from the episode I just uploaded on the 'Tube). "They're not gonna have the right price (my guess of 4046 instead of all the way at 3109) that soon, are they?" Yup.

One Bid 2: I thought that table would be in the $800s, making Jacqueline win, but I was so wrong.

Lucky $even: While cooking, I paused it right when Tonie was about to guess the last number. Thinking along the lines of Minute to Win it, what would happen if Price went to commercial at that point. My thought was that Tonie CAN get this. Unpause, and my first guess was 9, but really looking at the price, thinking it could be 8 or some other number Tonie would not get. Proof positive that having one dollar in the end CAN STILL result in a win.

One Bid 3: If they're gonna pick people like Miles (and pretty much all the contestants who ended up spinning the Wheel) to be contestants, then my chances of being a contestant are shot to bleep right now.

Plinko: When Brianna went up on stage, I was predicting that Plinko would be played, resulting in NOT having a perfect show (not that I was rooting for one anyway; and her missing the last prize sealed it, too). But heck, I would love to have $21,500 for anything college related.
[At the time of this writing, I'm still waiting on my admission acceptance...]

Balance Game: For the sake of having five numbers appear on the vane display, I would put the $7K and $6K bags on the scale. I wasn't paying attention to pricing the prizes correctly, anyway.

check out. they really gotta make it difficult to win with those products huh

One Bid 6: Sometimes I wonder if 1-upping a potential banishee feels like the the 1 is a stabber...

Switch?: "A year's supply of food" again? Ha Ha. For some reason, Switch? is beginning to feel like the new Bump to me...

Yeah, it seemed like a little bittersweet ending to see Rich go out like this. I wanted to see what kind of signal about Rich they were going to do. Instead I see other stuff like Connor and Lanisha dancing. Oh well.
Now that I saw the full ending, it really felt like was the Season Finale with footage of Carey, Greco, and Company, including an announcer that looks like he was about to cry. Godspeed.

I'm also surprised that they didn't go too far with the Back to School thing.  They could have had prizes like a year's tuition, a scholarship, or loans being paid off but thankfully stayed with mostly standard prizes (although that groceries for a year thing is stupid in a pricing game).  And although Lucky $even's first 3 numbers were quite evil, it was refreshing to see a 5 at the end and great to see it won.  Check Out though was just evil and I thought it was going over the top to put up the LOSS lighting after the 4th product.

With the $50 cell phone bid, he was probably thinking that it was that price because of the deals providers give where you get a phone for a price like that when you get a 2 year agreement.

As for the 9 day trip of Europe.. a student could definitely take it during summer vacation or winter break.

Balance Game:  D'oh.  He was going to go $7998 and let the audience talk him into $8998.

Check Out:  ?!?!?!  Paper for $4?  Not that it mattered by that point in the game, but 12 pencils for $5???

Switch:  A thinking contestant could've won this game.  One price ended in $xx95 and the other in $xx47.  Which sounds much more likely to be a single prize's price, and which sounds much more like an average of many values?

I have to agree. It was really awesome seeing the whole behind the scenes crew.

I noticed a certain executive producer conspicuously missing from that whole...

New shows have been aired in August during Seasons 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 38.  In fact, Seasons 5-9 started in August.
Interesting... that explains why I hadn't heard of that happening, since it was in the early days.

Even with proxy, I was unable to watch the episode on the CBS website - I would have loved to see Rich's sendoff

Rich look like he was about to cry right when the copyright came up. But a nice sendoff with Marty, Kathy, and others in the shot.

I enjoyed the show as a whole today. Even the losses didn’t bother me so much as the general vibe was good and fun.
Anyone else think the 15” LCD looked kind of… I dunno, squished and cheap?

Lucky $even wasn't supposed to be won, either...which made the fact that it was won all that much sweeter.
The way I saw it, the “5” at the end was almost a reward for getting past the first three unusual numbers.

The next contestant wasn't supposed to get four Plinko chips, either.
I dunno, those didn’t seem so bad. I think I would’ve gotten four, too.

I have to ask...when is a college student going to find time to take a nine-day tour of Europe?
Well, I'm about to finish a four-month-plus summer vacation...

Just switch the prices and be done with it.
I feel like it adds just a tad bit more to an otherwise pedestrian game. I don't mind it.

Mohammad seemed shocked when he didn't win the cell phone with his $50 bid.
Minus missing the XBox package by about ten bucks, he didn't seem on the ball throughout much of the show. Even if he was just bidding on the phone, what high-end cell phone goes for fifty dollars?

I really don't think they should have groceries for a year in games
I figured that the prices shouldn't be switch because the gym ended in a "standard" digit (the 5) and the groceries ended in a digit you're more likely to end up with when creating an average.

Good work, team. Looking forward to the 20th.

The highlight of the show was Rich's send-off and Drew Carey's son's breakdancing. Lots of fun in Plinko and Lucky $even too, but obviously that wasn't what I watched this show for. Amazing Drew was still calling him "the best announcer in the world" even in this episode. Rich may not have been perfect, but he was good. And I get the feeling that a lot of people will be really missing him once the new comedy act begins.

"Groceries for a year" is about the most random thing they could come up with. "Based on a national survey of the average person"...  there's no way you can narrow that down. Is it enough groceries to keep you alive, or enough to keep you comfortable, or even more than enough groceries, if the average person buys more groceries than they consume? That would be a nice prize to give out for Grocery Game or Check-Out, but I don't like it in that scenario. I know, I know, it's still a 50/50 shot, and if you know the price of the home gym, it doesn't matter. Regardless, that was the wrong place to put that prize.

So long, Rich Fields, and cue R.E.M.

Chad, any Plinko chip whose fake ends with a 5 or 0 that's wrong isn't supposed to be won.

Now, if you'd have gotten them, more power to you...but they were still supposed to be missed.

And I get the feeling that a lot of people will be really missing him once the new comedy act begins.

I may wind up missing Rod Roddy more than I already do, but I feel pretty safe saying I won't miss Rich.

Nonsense. The USDA puts out a publication (http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/Publications/FoodPlans/2009/CostofFoodDec09.pdf) every year that details the national average for groceries for an individual, all the way up to a family of four, with prices for four different spending categories ("thrifty" through "liberal"). Additionally, they break the averages down by days, weeks, and months. This is pretty easy to find if you google "national average for groceries".

If one has seen this prize on the show over and over again (it's been a prize at least 3 times this year), they could easily do what I just did to look up the price of said prize.

I have to ask...when is a college student going to find time to take a nine-day tour of Europe?
As others have noted, college students have plenty of break time to travel. My sister, who had never been out of the country prior to college, when to Mexico, Nicaragua, France, and Germany on different trips during her college breaks. There are specific travel companies who cater specifically to the college and 20-something market. They have tour packages that sound a lot like what was offered in the Showcase (i.e. spend a 1 to 4 days in a country than move on to another country). Some of the travel packages are much longer than 9 days. Some of them last several weeks. I think in a brochure the longest trip I saw was 45 days. And again, these are companies that specifically market to college students and recent graduates. So the trip made a lot of sense.

You know, somehow I knew I'd get called out on that "when are college students going to find the time to take a  nine-day tour of Europe?" comment...the only real time off we had for trips like that was between semesters, as our breaks during the actual school term were not long enough for such trips (except perhaps spring break, but that'd be pushing it)...

Which begs the question...how long do contestants have to take the trips they win?

Regarding the groceries in Switch?, I actually found them easy. The price of them just looked too wrong to be the price of the home gym, so it was easy to deduce from there.

Three of the six 1986 primetime specials aired in August, 8/14, 8/21, and 8/28.

Being that Kitch has been offline for the past couple of days, and because I was bored and wanted to see if I could do it, I wrote a recap for the show, which can be found here (https://sites.google.com/site/cuhockeyproducer/tpir082710-1). (Four straight hours of coding, with nothing but a reference book and a Notepad window...yuck! I see what people who do this full-time go though...it's not fun) It's very rough (with some broken code thanks to Google hating it- the original code works), and there's no pretty colors, but it works.

(Army or whoever- if you'd like to post it on the first post of the thread, I have the original code which I can send to you via PM if you'd like (Google Sites doesn't like my CSS for some strange reason, and when you go to view the source code it's just a messy mess- if you want to post it to the thread, you'll want the original code- I can easily send it to you, no problem)- just let me know. (I no longer have access to my personal University webspace since I'm no longer there...otherwise I'd have just posted it there).

I just noticed this while re-watching the show...anyone notice how the TV during the credits had the Europe trip displayed on it despite the fact that Tonie didn't actually win it?

I had no idea TPIR was still using those circular props behind the car. I liked the red & gold better, but the black looks pretty cool too.

They disappeared at the start of season 37?  I'm confident they were still used in 35 in the Clock Game, 36 I don't remember.

The ending...yeah I think it was a Rich sendoff, but it was also the last tape of the season.  I do find it odd that they kept it up when they clearly knew that it would only be seen online, though.

That was the losing contestant, which still looks strange that no one came over to shake his hand or anything. He's just there by himself.

Great show all around though. I think it was one of the best from this whole season even. Even the events taking place during the credits were great. It was smart of Drew to actually make no mention of Rich leaving since I don't believe it was confirmed at that time, but at the same time have some fun with him and the staff. I don't know if anyone else caught it but right at the tail end it looked as if both Rich and Drew were gonna shed a tear when they looked at each other. And just when the show finally started feeling like The Price is Right again, someone at CBS tears it apart. It's sad though that someone at CBS wanted him out for no real apparent reason other than just not liking him.

Push Over- Nothing really stuck out, but thanks to the number alignment there was two possibilities that could be ruled out to help increase his chances.

Lucky 7- Boy it's been a long time since we've seen a 5 as the last number! It's actually a good thing contestants can't hear us at home because I called a 4 and it would've obviously been a heartbreaker. I'm still in shock it was won!

Plinko! Now see everyone thought it was tough, when I felt it was easy for once. I'm even surprised she didn't get all 5 since that last item has been used many times. It's great that our big winner in this games was a college student because $21,000+ will come in handy when it comes time to pay off those loans!

Well we had a rousing start and with that all good things must come to and end.

Showcases-  Two observations they didn't bring her other car out. I think that's a good thing though because it just creates more work for the stage hands. The other thing though is something they need to work on, trip graphics. If you notice on the TV in the winning contestants showcase they have the Europe graphic up. She didn't win it! They need to get this taken care of so that there is no confusion or legal issue.

Yeah, they don't seem to be posing with Rich. And when Drew is posed nicely with Rich for the camera, Lanisha runs right in front of Rich to gesture to Drew's kid. I'd like to think she wouldn't spoil that shot if she knew it was Rich's sendoff.
