Nomenclature shift, that's largely it besides adding italics to one thing. Had to do some manual editing to get rid of inexplicable bracketing, but I couldn't get rid of them all, and I don't feel like redoing templates right now, sorry.

This episode came back around on Pluto, and I decided to fix up the errant tables. And I noticed a discrepancy between my recap and TPIR Episode Guide, a flipped pair of numbers on the Fourth IUFB. But I got distracted, and didn't see which was correct. It's a minor error to the tune of $9. If I notice it later, and mine is wrong, I'll fix it. For the trouble, I added color to everything.

Again, the actual country music aspects made this show odd. In particular, Sidey really felt forced in due to it - although Adam should have been better in scheduling that short lineup next to other of those quickies. There's just no excuse to have a game being played on two consecutive tapedates.

On the other hand, Halfy, double-car winner Justin (getting lucky though, that was a Halloween-like bid, I'd love to hear what he was thinking bidding that) and the showdowns made this show probably the best of the week.

Half Off was just unbelievable.  First, it had me dreading the segment because of a special guest, and honestly I didn't like how he was nose-picking the head.  But seeing the first $10,000 win with all 16 boxes in play just made up for it all, and then some.

It was pretty interesting to see all three possible choices for the front of the car in Money Game in the same row.

I guess they were short for time, but I think they should have played Pick-a-Pair instead of Squeeze Play for two prizes.

Wasn't that particular dude ranch from Side By Side used for the filming location of the Nickelodeon show Hey Dude?

Seeing Side By Side today makes one wonder if yesterday's appearance was a substitute for another game, like Freeze Frame or Balance Game.

Personally, I didn't like how they delayed the reveal to plug the bonus prize, but there really wasn't any better way to insert it into the show, with the possible exception of right after the second showcase was bid upon.

Well, at least there was no horse!

Half Off win was unbelievable.

I think Coming or Going could have easily been used instead of playing Side By Side again.

Is it really necessary to have all of those Country music singers there? I think we would have got a better lineup (Squeeze, Money, Switch and Side By Side all in one show!?!) if there were less stars there. Kev will tell us when he posts if the lineup was short or not, but I have a feeling it was.

Guests should be limited to one showcase, I think.

That being said, this was a pretty good show. Especially the amazing Half Off win.

I don't know if it was just me, or if it seemed like there were quite a few edits in both SCSDs today, because the beeping was fast, then it suddenly slowed down.

I really think we should move away from the Mimi stuff and the first four breakfast club stuff.. Those were Joes thing, time for something new.

Luckiest.  Half.  Off.  Win.  Ever.

(I know I've seen someone win with 8 in play, but has anyone, besides today, won it with all 16 boxes still up?)

I still cannot stand theme shows. (At least when they have nothing to do with a holiday.)

It seemed to me that the description of the first one-bid was longer than the opening of the show. That's just wrong!

1/2 Off was nothing short of incredible. Wiping out on all the evil SP's (Another thing that's just wrong!), and still picking the winning box.

It seemed to me that the description of the first one-bid was longer than the opening of the show. That's just wrong!

In fact, it was! The intro to the show was 1:08, whereas OB1 in total lasted 1:28.

In general, all the country aspects felt forced into today's show to a ridiculous extent. The endless barrage of trips at the end, complete with a trip in the 6th pricing game, felt a little off, and the guest appearances basically made it impossible to get any kind of a lineup in today. Does anyone know if Side By Side was an emergency last-minute replacement because the first showdown ran so long? Perhaps they were planning to play a grocery game at that point?

Now, the good - that first showdown was nothing short of amazing and we haven't had a nice long showdown like that in awhile. I was laughing because it was probably the last thing Drew and co. wanted on a day like today, but no one can control the wheel. The 1/2 Off win was also nothing short of incredible - that was bound to happen eventually, but nice to see it happen. The last two 1/2 Off playings have been won on 8 boxes and 16 boxes, so that's quite a nice streak we have going there!

While the guest appearances themselves were tolerable, they were pretty long, and the timings below say it all about today's show (although the long showdown certainly contributed to some of that!). I'm ready to get back to normal on Monday - didn't really feel like I was watching an episode of Price today in the second half of the show, but more just one long promo for ACM.

Timings:
Switch? (3.5) - 2:27
1/2 Off (5.5)- 4:50
Money Game (4.5) - 3:13
Squeeze Play (3.5) - 2:28
Gas Money (5.5) - 3:15
Side By Side (3.5) - 2:35
Total time (26): 18:48 (over 5 minutes shorter than normal!)

I haven't seen it the show just yet but I was actually wondering if there would ever be a day where a contestant got all 3 pairs of items wrong in Half Off and still win! We had 8 boxes on the last playing, which was amazing. But this one plaing is just undeniably unbelievable!!!!

The Mimi thing is more connected to Drew, but you don't have to necessarily use the phrase First Four Breakfast Club along with it to get the same thing across.

1/2 Off:  Incredible win!!  I was hoping I would get to see someone pick the box wth the money in it from all 16 boxes once.  I think they should've played the clang and whoop since the right box was picked out of all 16.
SCSD#1:  Wow, a 3-way tie at $.95!  How cool was that!

Pretty good show overall, IMHO.

So... was Half Off supposed to be won or lost?  I mean, the SPs were really difficult, especially the stupidly expensive clock/photo frame, but the actual money was placed in box #7.  So... I'm not sure what conclusion I'm supposed to draw from it.

Personally, if it wasn't for those wins, I would have turned off the show.

Greco didn't want anything won it seemed, even though the showcases weren't crazy priced. But 4 ququickies which were super rushed anyway!? And Sidey again! Come on! 18 minutes is unacceptable. This IMO was one of the worst this season. You should never cut gameplay for a showcase.

19 minutes???? Pitiful.

And Sidey again!

Hey, it beats a second playing of Double Prices in a one week time period.

You should never cut gameplay for a showcase.

The showcases weren't the only problem. It was also the other crap at the end that they "needed" to throw in.  :rollold:

My suspicion is more that Side By Side was subbed in yesterday (actually Monday's episode), due to the awkward staging yesterday.  See the recap from yesterday if you don't know what I'm talking about!

Still it was weird to have SBS played twice in one week.

I miss the vintage TPIR shows that ran over 40 minutes!!!  The staffers just can't produce that type of quality given the rushed time constraints they are under today.

Although this was the first of three shows to air, this was the second of three tapings that I went to (March 16, 12:20 PM).  My audience number was #050.

I had no idea as to what kind of show this was going to be at first, but the moment I saw Blake Shelton during 1/2-Off, I knew I was going to be in for a treat.  Speaking of 1/2-Off, that was the most EPIC WIN in a pricing game that I have ever seen in my life.  During the show itself, we had a series of gameplay and technical fails that caused us to run overtime--not to mention the influx of special guests.  Adela, who was from El Paso, had to do a "redo" to come up on stage to play her pricing game because the wrong One-Bid price was revealed the first time she won.  As for the Showcases themselves, I have to agree that they were pretty lackluster in terms of prize selection; I figured they would offer something expensive in one of them (at least).  As a result, Alison had no chance of winning the first Showcase when I saw her bid that high; I had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't gonna break $20K, and I was right on that one despite my own prediction that it would break $20K.

My in-house bids:  $20,000 /// $33,000 -- Too bad for me too, because I figured $20,000 would be a conservative guess on my part of SC-1.  Something in there was dirt cheap.

I know that some people tend to get irritated over the fact that today's show had a bunch of guests, but overall I enjoyed this taping.  Miracle wins and surprises galore, yet the next taping I experienced would top this in more ways than one.  :-D

I love how Bully was pretty much the only one in his row standing up for the $1K win in the second Showdown. :P

Hehehe...both SCSD's were epic too; this was the first time I saw two contestants get the $1000 on the same show.
Title: Re: Recap Placeholder -- 4/16/10
Post by: SteveGavazzi on April 16, 2010, 08:53:12 PM
This show was a lot better than last year's country show simply because, for the most part, they didn't do much to make it feel like it wasn't a normal episode.  (Oddly enough, though, my station was having signal problems that almost made it look like Drew was coming through Door #2 with a horse again!)

The first Item up for Bids should not sound like it's part of the Showcase.

I love seeing things like Switch? first.

1/2 Off was totally set up to be won.  The money was in the "lucky"-numbered box, and two of the three small prizes were pretty easy.  That said, seeing the contestant get everything wrong and still win was nothing short of dumbfounding.

I don't like it when they edit spins, but I have a feeling they were really pressed for time today.

That aside, though, the first Showcase Showdown really was something else.

God, I hate 2-prize Squeeze Play.

I wonder why they played Side by Side twice this week.  There's a ton of other games they could have used in place of one of them -- Coming or Going, Balance Game, Freeze Frame, and Pick-a-Number weren't played this week.  Or better yet, as GRF suggested, why couldn't they use Squeeze Play for that trip and put Squeeze Play's prize package in a grocery item game?

Blake Shelton might be a good singer, but he's terrible as a speaker.

Since we saw SBS again I guess they taped theses out of order

Taping has nothing to do with it -- these shows were aired out of order.  This week's broadcasts were Friday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Monday, and Thursday.

Adela, who was from El Paso, had to do a "redo" to come up on stage to play her pricing game because the wrong One-Bid price was revealed the first time she won.

I thought something was off there -- it was the fourth Item up for Bids, but Drew appeared to have the envolope for the sixth one.  So how did they handle having the wrong price?  Was it for a previous IUFB or an upcoming one?

Joey, I agree with you about having Double twice in a week. I think they should have had Double played yesterday and replaced it with something else on Monday's show.

I'm not really sure, but from what I can think of right now, I'm assuming--don't hold it against me if I'm wrong--that it was probably a previous One-Bid.  Again, I might be totally wrong here.

It definitely was a rushed show today. I could almost see the frustration in Drew's face, because I can tell he doesn't like it. Lot of good wins today tho, esp. Half Off. A very nice and memorable win.

I don't mind these special themed shows, but I'm starting to dislike having the special guest needing to speak, past a simple hello. Having them simply model, would have been just as effective.

I think my favourite part of the show though, had to be Showcase Showdown 1. Classic Price :)

The 1/2 Off win was unbelievable, and I'd also like to mention something that I'm kind of surprised hasn't been mentioned: Justin's win in Money Game. Sure, he screwed up on the price of the Focus, but when picking the last two numbers, he seemed to truly know what he was doing, going for 54 and 79, avoiding all three traps that were on the board. Bravo man.

Not that I was aware of.  All we had were a bunch of technical fails resulting in a few stopdowns during the show itself, which caused us to run overtime.

Yeah. Its called managers and age. Loretta Lynn's getting up there in age, and unfortunately, save plastic surgery, she ain't gettin' much younger. It is rather stupid to see people I've never heard of. Maybe get Brad Paisley or Kenny Chesney if we need young.

Superb 1/2 Off win!  :P

Nice Money Game win, after a rough start.  :-)

Too many trips (especially in the showcases today and in recent days)!

Yeah. Its called managers and age. Loretta Lynn's getting up there in age, and unfortunately, save plastic surgery, she ain't gettin' much younger. It is rather stupid to see people I've never heard of. Maybe get Brad Paisley or Kenny Chesney if we need young.

You must not listen to country often cause Blake Shelton has been around for some time, like 7 or 8 years.

I thought the last Half Off win, with 8 boxes left in play, was amazing. This one was unbelievable.

I didn't think the three prizes were overly difficult. Just unlucky playing.

Switch was kind of obvious, as was Gas Money. Both could have been won.

Celebrities should only be used in the showcases, and only occasionally.

And the SCSDs were definitely edited down. You could hear the wheel beeps change speed too quickly.

About that amazing 1/2 Off win: I thought the only SP combo that was necessarily set up as a forced miss was the camera/clock combo.  Even I didn't see the $45 price tag on that camera coming--and still, you have to wonder what kind of picture quality you'll get out of a $45 camera!  Blake Shelton did a good job of picking the box up and putting it on the table without revealing the contents.  I have to admit that I jumped out of my chair with excitement when she opened the box and found the money!

I'm almost compelled to say this tops the MDS a couple years ago where the contestant "picked" his box out of the 16 in the beginning of the game, the box turned out to be the one with the money at the end of the game, and he would have won even if he hadn't got any of the SP's right.

You must not listen to country often cause Blake Shelton has been around for some time, like 7 or 8 years.

I don't think it was Blake Shelton he was talking about.  I think it was Bomshel.  Even I had to do a double-take when I heard that.  I remember saying, "bomb who?"  I've listened to country music for 20 years and keep up with all the new acts in-between enjoying the classics, and I've honestly never heard of them.  Pun intended.

Maybe it's just that none of the 3 country stations I get here in Indianapolis plays them.  Maybe Muzak's Country Music One and Nashville USA channels don't have them in the rotation--which I highly doubt, since a lot of stuff Muzak plays is indie/obscure/rare music.  Maybe I've heard them and never gave it a passing thought as to who I was listening to, but until Friday, I had never heard of Bomshel.  I think it was fine that they had them on, if only for promotion.  It helps people discover new music.

the problem is that they seem to pick country stars that save for Reba never worked in television or stage/theatre or film and they look...and sound like deer in headlights....

I absolutely agree with this, but I see this from the perspective of the show.  Since they are professional performers, the show operates on the pretense that since they sing well in front of crowds/lights/cameras, they should be able to speak well in front of crowds/lights/cameras, as well.  If it comes down to someone behind-the-scenes being wrong with that, then they chalk it up as a mistake and do better next time.

...put a Loretta Lynn or a Garth Brooks who know what the words get on with it means...

As for your Loretta point, I think Connie Smith would be a fair compromise, although not realistic due to the show wanting to hit their numbers in younger demographics.  Connie's just a tad younger than Loretta and has proven she is an excellent speaker.  Of course, you'd have to get her away from Marty Stuart and his show first!

If the show's perspective is that someone will be able to read copy correctly because they can sing well, the show needs a new pair of glasses.

Who decides who comes on the show anyway?

Made a minor change to my recap. Used a BG shade recommended by penny_ante, and changed "Half-Off" to "½ Off".

Hey, thanks, Kitch. It looks great.

I listen to lots of country, but after 1975, my liking for it is limited. Similar to other genres with 1985 or later. Not my fault that I've never heard of him. I prefer the basics.
