I was in the audience for this taping and sure enough, with 4 turntable games there was bound to be problems with the main turntable.  It stalled multiple times and the taping stopped, but as you can see all was well.

Drew told some terrible snail jokes during the taping (think training day... if anyone remembers the snail line) as well.

I don't have time for a full taping report at this time, but I will try to put one up tomorrow.

Was it just me, or did the Barker wall start moving before the doors closed after Drew came onstage (like back in July)?

What a bummer to miss by $770 in the Showcase and still not win.  There was the $30 vs. $29 difference way back when, though, which must have been really heartbreaking to be on the wrong end of.  To be in DSW range and not win even your own showcase.....

Flip Flop was screaming to Flip and Flop.  I'm surprised that she didn't at least Flop.

Interesting show and lineup today. I am surprised both Flip Flop and Coming or Going showed up today, I figured we'd see one of them paired with something like Bargain Bar or Switch?

How in the world was Grand Game lost?!?!? What was Irene thinking? That was a headscratching loss that's for sure.

Y'know if Drew hosted every day and every segment like he did Spelling Bee today he'd be fine. That segment was probably some of the best hosting he's done thus far over the course of a season and the beginning of this season.

Speaking of Spelling Bee was my ears deceiving me or did Drew say that Bee was his favorite game?  :P There's something wrong with that.  :P

Not even in the Drew era. Last season, there was a $412 / $123 combo.

Very surprised to see the same cars today (one exactly the same price, the other very close, probably added those floormats to make the very strange -937). I figured the guitar was deceptively cheap with the other prizes definitely being over 1k. Not sure how the audience was fooled by the cat food, maybe she misread the sign. Also have no clue why Greco put a CAR in #7 of all places. XD Ignoring Flippy for a second... A# was very painful, but it must be pointed out that it was the very rare 2nd digit of the car that was left over in the critical final choice - from the beginning, she overpriced the already-expensive Accord and still didn't let go, choosing the highest option left at the end. Coggy has 2 playings and 2 wins - enjoy it while you can. And again, nice SC bidding today; it seems like a couple of things might have went down in price as I was just barely over on both today.

Back to Flippy...we wonder why we haven't been over .500 in a long time. It's these types of losses that contribute to somewhere around .470 instead.

what a great show to end a great day :-)

Shopping Spree - i knew he was done for when he picked the guitar. the audience didnt seem to react as usual though.

Grand Game - Tough loss. the dog food looked expensive but not more that $8

Spelling Bee - great way to start it off this season

Flip Flop - i dont really blame amy for not winning. i wouldve only flopped

Any Number - at first she seemed to think the car was more expensive than it was.

Coming or Going - Nice win. 6k looked too expensive for a trip that close to LA

Showcases -Fantastic Bidding there. loved the first showcase too

grade: 8.5/10

I'm not liking the recap of the prizes at the end of the showcase copy. Do contestants really have such bad short term memories that they can't remember what the first two prizes were? Besides, it breaks up the line "...and this showcase can be yours if the price is right," which is one of those Johnny-isms that deserves to be kept intact.

I see the new strategy for getting Coming or Going won is to have the 5 be the FIRST number in the price instead of the last, after the spring's run of people missing how many $X,XX5 prices? ;)

Having CAR under #7 in Bee = Almost Forced Win.

Agreed...If they keep that up on EVERY showcase, it will become very annoying.

Part one of my taping report (everything up to the start of the taping)

Taping report: September 30th, 2008 Airing

Tape Date: August 3rd, 2008 1:00 PM.

I live in the Bay Area.  If Price is Right is doing a weekend taping, it is not out of the realm of possibility for my Mom and I to drive down on Saturday, spend some time with my sister who lives in Orange, spend the night, go to a taping Sunday, and go home the same day.  This taping was the second time I had done that (and after doing it a second time... I really must question if it is within the realm of possibility again!  It was harsh... but fun!)

I had previously gone to the first taping of the season on July 20th, 2008 and at that taping, getting there at 3 AM on the day of got us 4th row seats.  For this taping (another "rare" sunday taping) geting in line at 3 AM got my family (Me, my Mom, my Sis, and a friend of my Sis') got in line such that we were able to get second row seats.  It seems fewer people were willing to get up as early.

I met some nice people who were going to the 4PM taping and they would be in the front row for that taping.  His name was Brian and he had claimed to have delivered prizes for the show many years before.  He said that the stagehands really mistreat most of the vehicles we see on screen moving them and whatnot.  He also would repair them before delivery and simply charge CBS or whomever the cost of the repairs.  Havn't heard much about their taping though.

Stan was at his best and he and I had a nice chat.  He had recognized me from two weeks prior and said he had remembered me.  He seemed to spend a few extra seconds with me and my family which was a nice treat.  Unfortunately, this would not pay off later on.  My sister decided to scream out of excitement at the top of her lungs when Stan and her talked.  She scared everyone around her!  May I suggest NOT doing that to Stan.  He took it well though.

The crowd was not into it today at all.  The pages didn't really do too much in the way of exiting the crowds at all.  Also, the lead page was very serious about her duties and it didn't really help the situation.

The person who was at the front of the line (and incidentally, in seat 1) claimed to have seen nearly 90 tapings of the show.  When I asked, he said he was not familiar with GR.net though which surprised me.  I suppose he may not be into this sort of thing.

Rich skipped his normal dance routine and went straight into the taping.  Nothing too out of the ordinary.  The taping started on time as far as I can tell.

I will have to finish this a little later, but hope it gives you all some insight into the crowd for the day.

Shopping Spree: I don't know whether I would have won or lost on this one.

Grand Game: I'd have gotten the pet food, but I possibly would have lost on the Aspercreme.

Spelling Bee: Lucky number 7 it is. :) That's impressive

SCSD 1: First Drew helping of the season I believe. That was pretty cool.

Flip Flop: I think I was the only one in chat that would have had it. But that was a pretty hard set up in general.

Any Number: Almost a great comeback for the ages, a decent effort.

Coming or Going: That shocked me. It really did.

Showcases:...can we teach the contestants correct powers of 10, please? I seem to notice that more and more people are getting things like that wrong.

Grand Game: I'd have gotten the pet food, but I possibly would have lost on the Aspercreme.

That's why I don't understand how this game was lost today. She got the hardest product out of the way on the 3rd pick and yet she still thought the Ester-C was under $8.00 and that measley box of dog food was over $8.00?  :headbang:

I didn't like the way Drew explained Shopping Spree.  It sounded unnecessarily confusing, and I'm thinking it may have played a part in Sharken's loss.

Oh, gosh, don't tell me the "Alakazam" garbage has caught on so much that people are making T-shirts out it?

Wonder why the Turntable didn't come around completely at the beginning of Flip Flop?  Not a problem, I say.  We got to see it turn a little bit. :)

The new Showcase endings have to stop, plain and simple.  They sound so unnecessarily redundant and ambiguous.

Did anyone notice that when Drew threw the ARP tag for the first item up for bids into the audience, someone picked it up and gave it to the Page?  I have seen people keep that thing as a souvenir before, but never return it to a Page.

I know that Sharken losing Shopping Spree was a forgone conclusion when the guitar was revealed to be $699 in price, but it seems so painful that he was just $59 short of winning.

That brings up this question about Shopping Spree, if someone spends exactly the amount that is needed, does he still lose?  I know the game would have to be specifically set up for that to happen, but I'm just wondering.

I got a kick out of Irene's shirt, this is probably the first time someone noted Drew's catchphrase for some games' reveals on fan t-shirt.

When Brettany was coming on up, on the HD broadcast, one could see part of the slate and Flip Flop was spoiled.

Is this the first time we had Drew say something was one of his favorite games?  I would think maybe ˝ Off would be his favorite because of the "alakazam" reveal and the excitement of winning $10,000, but I never expected Spelling Bee.

Drew has a bit of a memory lapse in Spelling Bee when he said "I'm going to show you the first one" before correcting himself and noting that Brettany could take $4,000 and quit or go for the car.

I laughed at how Drew joked that the game was called "Kill the Host" as they finished spinning the turntable around.  Also, we got to see some game coming partially around for the first time this season.

That last pick in Any Number was so nerve-racking, in my opinion, with the second digit in the price of the car either a 0, 1, or 2.  It stinks that the last pick resulted in winning only $8.62.

Well, Coming or Going is won again!  Hopefully that means the game will surely have a better win/loss ratio this year than last.

I wonder how the crew pulled off the bubbling effect on the range today, it must have been such a chore, to some regard, to clean that stain out of the carpet.

I guess today marked the debut of the Amazon.com Kindle on a game show, or at least TPIR.

I must say today's contestant did some very good bidding in the showcase, with both differences being less than $1,000 each.

This is to anyone who was in the audience for this show, right after the ticket plug ended after the first showdown, there was a noticeable edit that screwed up the theme's flow.  What happened right after the ticket plug (or was it just cut for time)?

I do not agree with Nick on certain things, but I am going to defend his right to an opinion here.  If he doesn't like the "Alakazam!" bit by Drew or how Drew explains certain games, or hosts in a certain manner, that's fine.  We come here do discuss our likes and dislikes of the show at hand and Nick, as well as everyone, is entitled to that opportunity.

I won't deny the fact that lately many of my posts have had a rather negative viewpoint, but honestly, I see so much more going wrong with the show right now than what's going right.

Okay, the recaps at the end of the showcases have got to go.  I can see how they look like a good idea on paper, but when actually implemented, they really throw off the flow of the whole thing.  It didn't help, either, that they're not even getting the sentence structure right -- today, they actually ended a showcase with, "And this showcase can be yours, containing (whatever it contained), can be yours if the price is right!"  Seriously, who the heck is writing these?!

And on top of that, there was something about the first showcase today that bugged me.  It was a funny showcase that clearly had a theme to it...and yet for some reason, they never explicitly stated what the theme was.  It made the whole thing seem more random than it needed to, and I have to wonder if there were originally lines explaining it that were taken out so that they could fit the recaps in.

I have no idea what to make of Grand Game.  Irene made some weird decisions, going for one of the hardest products (which, surprisingly, she turned out to be right about) when she'd only gotten to $10, and then missing a ridiculously obvious final pick.  Can't say I have any idea what was going through her head there.

Drew almost made a big screwup in Spelling Bee, nearly revealing the first card before remembering to offer Brettany $4,000 to quit.  It ended up not mattering, obviously, but still, he can't be doing that kind of thing.  At this rate, he'll be screwing up Double Prices before the season's over!

I have no idea what Amy was thinking in Flip Flop.  I know an even number of prizes doesn't always end with an even number, but they usually do, and you'd think that'd make for a pretty obvious answer (or half an answer, in this case).

Incidentally, the whole deal with the turntable at the start of Flip Flop was awesome.  Drew got off a great line, and we actually got to see the game finish spinning!

Any Number was great to watch, even though Sherry ended up only winning the piggy bank.  Drew even built it up pretty well.

We've seen two playings of Coming or Going now where the seemingly "obvious" answer turned out to be wrong.  Given what was happening with it most of last season (and what's still happening with it now), I have to wonder if Roger started setting it up that way on purpose to get it won.

Very surprised to see the same cars today (one exactly the same price, the other very close, probably added those floormats to make the very strange -937).

Well, remember, the shows that aired yesterday and today are actually six episodes apart.

Wasn't Roger still in charge of [fakes and such]?  Doesn't he go for several more weeks, not just premiere week?

He did the first six or seven weeks of lineups, but I'm not sure how far in he did the games' setups...I think John had said it was only the first two or three weeks, and I don't think we ever got confirmation on which.  Just based on Coming or Going, though, I'm guessing that the third week is still Roger.

Shopping Spree:  It was lost from the start!  I would have thought the guitar was worth more than that with all of the accessories.

Grand Game:  I thought the dog food was one of the easier choices.  Too bad Irene went with the supplement.

One Bid 3:  Our first $500 winner of the season!

Spelling Bee:  Lucky 7 was a winner!

One Bid 4:  Drew almost messed up badly by not catching Carrie's duplicate bid of $1,100!

Flip Flop:  An easy setup if you realize that $4,399 x 2 = $8,798.  Unfortunately, Amy didn't and lost as a result.

Any Number:  Sherry didn't appear to have a clue what she was doing, but she nearly made the comeback of the century!  She got nailed in the end, though. :-(

Coming or Going:  A nice win, as a lot of contestants would have been too tempted by $6,135.

Showcases:  I thought for sure Brettany was over on the trip, so I was quite surprised to see her price revealed first.  It turns out that (A) she wasn't over, and (B) Amy bid even better!  Amy almost made a  :gotc:, but fortunately Drew hesitated, allowing her to catch her mistake.

I'd say that overall most of the pricing games were set up for wins today, but some poor decisions by the contestants (most notably in Grand Game and Flip Flop) brought the winnings total down by a notch.  The showcases made it exciting in the end, though!

Shopping Spree:  I knew Sharken was going to lose as soon as I saw the price of the guitar. :-(
Grand Game:  I knew that the dog food was the last item that was less than $8.00.  I can't believe Irene picked the Ester C instead. ???
Spelling Bee:  Awesome win! :-D
Speaking of Spelling Bee was my ears deceiving me or did Drew say that Bee was his favorite game?
Yes he did, and it's one of my favorite games too!  :-D
Flip Flop:  Too bad! :-(  I was thinking flip too.
Any Number:  What a bummer after the comeback Sherry was making!
Coming Or Going:  Good job! :-)  I thought Going myself because I thought 5 would be the last number in the price of the trip to Scottsdale, AZ.
Showcases:  Wow, two great bids today! :-D  I thought for sure Amy was going to win both showcases after seeing that Brettany was off by $770, but two great bids nonetheless!

Pretty good show overall, IMHO, after that awesome win on Spelling Bee and the two great bids in the Showcase.

Got to love a "CAR" win in Spelling Bee, but what I loved best about that is how the remaining letters spelled the best conference in college basketball. Right, Armadillo? :-P

...and yet another contestant targets an opponent excessively in Contestant's Row. Cari wasn't totally as bad as Margaret, but she still overdid it with the one-upping. And no, this isn't bias... anybody should be able to agree with me on this and yesterday's similar situation.

How about that top-notch bidding in the Showcase? That's about as good as it gets without seeing a DSW.

BEST CONTESTANT OF THE DAY: Brettany
SHOW GRADE: 3

Nice show, but Drew needs to read off the showcase prices with much more enthusiasm.  IMO, he looked like he was ready to get outta there.

I also dislike the showcase prize recaps. They're distracting and as has been mentioned, break up the flow of the show.

Shopping Spree: That guitar really killed it there for Sharken.

Grand Game: I knew Irene would lose the moment she picked the supplement.

Spelling Bee: That was great for Brettany to get the very first card in which it said "CAR".

SCSD #1: I wanted Irene to win.

Flip Flop: Amy should've flip-flopped there. I know I would.

Any Number: The audience was telling her "1". WHY SHERRY WHY?!

Pre-PG #6: It was a shame Michelle T. didn't got out of contestant's row. Especially when she was one-upped by Carrie who she too was there throughout the entire show today.

Coming Or Going: My gut told me $5316 as well.

Showcases: I thought for a brief moment there that the $2700 bid would stand. Thank goodness Amy redid her bid before it was too late. Boy those were 2 great bids. So much so that both of them came close to winning both showcases. IMO.

I was a bit disappointed for the fact that Drew failed to mention that another person was also wearing an "Alakazam" shirt. And boy do those endings of the showcases really start to get my nerves!

Do contestants really have such bad short term memories that they can't remember what the first two prizes were?

Yep. I find it a bit annoying too but I bet S&P is insisting on it.

That makes no sense.  The contestants can see the prizes.

The recaps are only good for narcoleptic contestants.  What was more important in the last minute that you can't keep track of 3 prizes?

Steve makes a good point that they don't even make grammatical sense.

Unfortunately, I don't think that things are going to change anytime soon, so I'll just tune in for the last 10 seconds from now on.

Drew was MUCH better in this episode than the one before it.  I agree, if he would host like he did Spelling Bee all the time, he would be fine.  Still needs work on Showcase Reveals.  However, at least today, he seemed to be in a better mood than the previous shows this season.

Do you believe that because of time constraints, Drew can't be as suspenseful in his buildups of prize reveals as we would like?  The Showcases under his era have always seemed rushed.  Or did Bob get extra time even in the last several seasons to interact with contestants, because as Executive Producer, he had clout?

Drew might possibly be told by CBS/Fremantle to move things along.  If so, I wonder if this was Syd's, Mike's, or Fremantle's decision?  Kathy certainly being from the Barker era, would not tell Drew to rush the show, unless her superiors are telling her and the staff to make these time constraints for more commercials.

The point is time is needed to build suspense and momentum, and for whatever reason, the powers that be aren't giving Drew enough time to interact.  If he had extra time to interact, I think his hosting ratings would be more consistent and positive.

Agreed...If they keep that up on EVERY showcase, it will become very annoying.

I've also noticed that it seems like they've put very little effort for making storyl lines in the showcases for the last couple episodes.

I'm not sure why people are citing Spelling Bee as "how Drew should host all time"...frankly, I thought he was pretty bad during that game, especially when it came time to reveal the cards.

That makes no sense.  The contestants can see the prizes.
Or, at most, a piece of posterboard and a marker.  Write the prizes on a big white piece of posterboard in black marker.  Hold it up in the general vicinity of Rich.  Boom, fixed.

hope that the cards revealed on Spelling Bee (CAR A C C)  are not of bad omen  :-o

Seems like every time they offer Honda cars, no other make gets offered and no cars are offered in the Showcase round.

Good observation - they don't. I don't think we've ever got an explanation as to why... perhaps something with sponsorship?
I do recall seeing a Honda in a showcase last season, but we didn't see one anywhere else in the show.

Shopping: Sharken doomed himself in big time.

Grand: I was just disbelieved when Irene chose the Ester-C. A practically-automatic win thwarted horribly.  :-(

Spelling: Brettany may have went for the car, anyway. Either way, CAR saves the day!!!

FlipFlop: I would've just flopped.

Any #: 1 was the way to go for me. Poor Sherry went the way of the goshdarn piggy bank.

CoG: Good job.

Showcases: Those showcase prize recaps are just lame and it is getting annoying. Please stop them!!! Amy and Brettany both deserve their showcases after some incredible bidding by both of them.

A 3-star show.

If it has happened everytime, I am sure it's part of their deal with CBS.

Does CBS have anything to do with which prizes the show can or can't offer?

Shopping Spree: Even though I had a feeling Sharken was doomed from the first pick, it's still painful to lose by $60.

Grand Game: The only one I knew for sure that were less than $8 was the freezer bags.  Not a good choice for the last pick.

Spelling Bee: That was awesome.  CAR card right away!

Flip Flop: That was pretty tough.  I only would've flopped.

Any Number: That was a heartbreaker.  Sherry goes from a near-miracle win to a painful loss.

Showcases:  8-O WOW, that was some nice bidding!  I thought for sure we'd have a DSW.

Someone should've told Amy about the "even number" rule when she played Flip Flop as when there are two identitcal prizes played for, the price always has to be an even number.

Not always, but certainly most of the time.  I remember that John posted a quick list a while back of prizes that ended in odd numbers even though two items are offered.

The only one that comes to mind is a pair of bikes for $851.
