For the first time, a streaming service earned more Oscar nominations than any traditional studio. Netflix racked up 24 nominations between The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Two Popes, three documentary nominations, and two animated features. Disney is a close second with 22 noms.

Also for the first time, four different films have picked up 10+ nominations.

12 years after Heath Ledger’s defining performance in The Dark Knight, Joaquin Phoenix leads Joker to 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Actor, Director, Cinematography, Score, Editing, Sound, and Costuming. Grossing over a billion at the box office on a $62 million budget, Joker has become one of the most profitable superhero movies of all time—and now, the most nominated comic book film in history.

Sam Mendes’ WW1 war movie 1917, edited to appear as one continuous shot, swept the Golden Globes, and was the #1 movie in theaters last week, beating Star Wars. The one-shot Birdman took home the Best Picture in 2015. Might Sam Mendes do the same?

Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood could get Quentin Tarantino his first directing win. He claims to want to retire after his 10th—seeing as the Academy loves movies about Hollywood, will the Academy see this as an opportunity to honor him?

Martin Scorsese’s budget for The Irishman was an offer that most studios had to refuse, leading Netflix to swoop in and finance it. Featuring digitally de-aged Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci and a 3hr 30m runtime, the ambitious project became an early frontrunner for Best Picture. Can it keep up the momentum?

And finally, the genre-bending Parasite has become an indie box-office darling, the highest grossing non-English Palme d’Or winner in the US. (It’s also tremendously entertaining, and my personal favorite of all of these.) Could it become the first foreign-language Best Picture winner?
