Title: ABC Summer Fun and Games 2020
Post by: tpir04 on April 14, 2020, 03:49:25 PM
Below is a link for the premiere dates of Holey Moley, Celeb Family Feud, Match Game, Press Your Luck and To Tell the Truth, all set to air this summer on ABC. Premiere dates for $100,000 Pyramid and Card Sharks have not yet been announced, however.

Also of note in the article is that the Who Wants to be a Millionaire revival will move to Thursdays at 8pm eastern (I assume that's what the lead-off spot is) beginning April 30.

Ditto for Card Sharks and Supermarket Sweep, according to Buzzerblog (http://buzzerblog.com/2020/04/14/abc-announces-summer-game-show-return-dates/). I doubt we'll see any of those three this summer.

There's a theory that we may see those later in the summer/early fall as some productions may struggle to get back up again and these could be rushed into production and taped quickly.

There is no good reason to stretch one game of Family Feud into a full hour. Two games in the same slot was just fine. Waiting for Steve to reveal the answers was like pulling teeth. It's even worse when he laughs before reading the questions. If they've been accommodating his style of hosting for years now, he should know what the questions are going to be like.

On a lighter note, Press Your Luck's bonus round is starting to grow on me. It's still a tacky add-on, but when done right, it's exciting.

I hope that's not the new normal for Celebrity Family Feud, otherwise that show will be nearly unwatchable. One hour to play a single game is beyond ridiculous.

The bonus round for Press Your Luck started to grow on me during the first season. Why?  Because even if the contestant doesn't take home the big million dollar prize they're still likely to leave with lots of money and some cool prizes that they actually want! It's almost guaranteed that at the end of the show the contestant is going home happy.

Looking at ABC's press site lists that the episode with the casts of RuPaul's Drag Race and The Bold Type that scheduled to air on the 14th will be one game so it could be the new normal for at least some episodes this season.

The bonus round on Press Your Luck last night was definitely super exciting, mainly since she actually had a legitimate shot at getting the million. It's boom or bust in that way, not that exciting if the contestant doesn't get a high amount, very exciting if he/she does.

If you stretch Feud to an hour for a single episode, you may as well have both Bullseye (with the rings arranged like a rainbow for that episode) and the 400 point format with two additional single questions and still have a little time left over for interviews.

Nice to see a new all-time PYL record, and I enjoyed the drama on the final spin of both the main game and the Bonanza! I'd still like to see the answer chyrons though for the question round though. I also thought of the Space X mission when I saw the UFO Whammy appear, but it was ironic since the Whammy didn't take away Space Camp that was won from the main game.

Interesting to have a detective-themed Match Game amid what's going on in the news, though I was certainly shouting at the screen in the second game when she didn't say the most obvious answer.

Funniest Whammy of the night on PYL was the air puppet. (Saw it through ABC On Demand after our ABC affiliate pre-empted it for protest coverage.)

Based on last nights Family Feud, I am assuming they probably didn’t get to film as many of these as they wanted and are just taking the ones they did film and stretching them out as long as they can to fill the schedule on ABC. Last nights show was pretty painful in how they stretched it out to an hour. Extended silliness, additional commercials, awkward placement of commercial breaks, it was borderline unwatchable as the game.....moved.....so.....slowly.

I think they did this half hour turned hour long Family Feud last year toward the end, in addition to the start of this year.  It probably isn't easy to sit through the episode as it's airing, but rather wait until it's available online.  It probably made sense choosing this past episode to stretch out given the cast of characters  It was not planned that way to extend the show, but it would've been better to have two games between the popular teams.  Very odd seeing a commercial between the intros and Question One.  Same with splitting up Fast Money (though it was done long ago in the past several times prior to where the total points for the third questions was less than average if one family won each of the first couple of rounds).

Also, Spmahn, CFF started earlier than normal due to the fact that the NBA Finals, which airs on the same network, isn't happening until later in the year.  The league typically has games scheduled for Sunday (though they hadn't needed a second Sunday in four years)

No new Feud or PYL this weeks, so either they’ve already run through everything they were able to film, or they’re stretching out whatever new episodes they can and skipping weeks. If it’s the latter, that’s really dumb, you’re not going to build or retain an audience by running the show sporadically.

It's the latter Spmahn; they taped Press Your Luck in late January while Family Feud was taped in February.

So then they’re just skipping weeks for the sake of stretching out the content which will erode the audience and then act surprised when the network’s ratings slide from one week to the next. Gotta love the geniuses at ABC.

They did this last summer, the audiences came back.
Networks are running out of new content because of covid (no one really knows how much they would be able to produce before a likely second shut down happens) so they are stretching it out as long as they can.

Plus running way earlier due to no NBA Finals probably hasn't helped.

Not to mention that one of the two special hours was themed to Father's Day, it made sense to run that on the actual day, and the other to be shown before the book came out.

PYL schedule for the next 3 weeks:

7/5: Repeat of the season 2 premiere, with Emily's big win
7/12: Buzzerblog teased the other day that this episode is one we need to watch
7/19: Welcoming back 3 past champions from the Tomarken era, was supposed to be the 7/12 episode

If the episode scheduled for July 12 features what I think it is, I'll be happy period.  This goes to teasers in general, not just this one, but I don't know if I prefer to be "warned" about possible history or if there are no hints and I just see it without warning.  For example, Wheel of Fortune about 7 years ago or so mentioned that there would be a $1 Million winner that week, and over a decade ago, it was hinted that someone would win $100,000 when that was the top prize.  Deal Or No Deal did something similar with their Million Dollar Mission

I guess I could go either way.  Not saying Buzzerblog spoiled anything; fortunately I have never passed on seeing an episode because the results or outcome was disclosed in advance (for me, I'm curious to see it play out).  However, a pleasant surprise is what made for a great day or evening growing up

Whenever I need to be told to watch something, "especially this specific episode", it usually craters my interest after that episode airs.

After all, they'll surely be kind enough to let me know the next time there's a big win, so there's little chance I'll miss anything if I tune out once the main game is done.

(I think the real benefit of the practice isn't for the viewers, but moreso for the entertainment journalists who write all the articles about it the next day. But it tends to screw over the audience who would have watched anyways.)

Fair enough, gamesurf.  I totally agree that it's for the media, the journalists, etc.  Like the audience, I'm definitely watching if the show in question is popular enough that I wouldn't miss an episode.

The thing that I didn't mention before is that every so often I'll DVR an episode if there's a conflict or if I have stuff to do the next day where it can wait.  What's unfortunate is if a big episode is just that, it's possible that I get spoiled inadvertently while trying to read or listen to something unrelated.  Wouldn't stop me from watching is though!

But no spoilers here as the Whammy featuring the chorus that sang "You Suck" to the tune of Johann Strauss II & Johannes Brahms' "Blue Danube Waltz" has to be on in the top 3 of my favorite whammies from the revival.

Last night's Fast Money had a couple of hilarious answers as well, especially regarding the NFL players about having nightmares with tackles. After all, injuries are way too common and may have contributed to those answers, as opposed to the more common ones like cars or trains. Being too old for a Teddy Bear when you're still in preschool/nursery also seemed very odd, though it oddly was worth three points. But those were still short of the response given by the second FM contestant about what Captain Hook would use instead of a hook to stomp and bang on others, with the player answering instead a certain male reproductive organ.

Still, great to see the record-breaking PYL episode, and it still left another early buzz-in zinger in the first question round about Old Town Road in addition to all of the spins. It will interesting to see what Card Sharks will be paired with when it returns this fall.

Assuming this was the last episode they had in the can, perhaps they want to stretch it out and have at least one new week of content in August, or whatever replacement show they have for that time slot for when PYL / Feud finish wasn’t ready yet

They're airing more reruns to stretch the run out because, simply put, they're running out of "new" programs. It's looking very likely that the new fall season won't start in September this year. It's a smart move on ABC's part, TBH.

Its why I think you will see Card Sharks, Pyramid and More Millionaire sooner than later.

According to the production codes on the ABC press site, they taped at least 13 episodes for Press Your Luck and at least 11 for Celebrity Family Feud earlier this year.

I am thinking the same thing too urbanpreppie0004. Millionaire has already put out a casting call for contestants who are essential workers and affected by the pandemic from a retweet by BuzzerBlog yesterday.

As for Card Sharks and Pyramid, as for as I know, Deadline (https://deadline.com/2020/07/card-sharks-return-to-filming-abc-fremantle-health-and-safety-protocols-1202981705/) reported on on July 9th that the former filmed episodes that day.

We were supposed to get two episodes in one for Family Feud, including Kathie Lee Gifford vs. Ricki Lake and 2 Chainz vs. Big Boi, yesterday.  Instead we were treated to an episode that aired 6 weeks ago.  As mentioned they have to stretch it out, but it sorta sucks given that this must have been a last minute change.  Furthermore, editing could be done to the point where Kathie Lee vs Ricki is its own episode

At the end of the day, I totally can't fault ABC for stretching things out as much as possible, but there will be a ton of spots that need to be filled as it relates to autumn programming.   Unless some of the content not necessarily game show content has been taped already

Apologies for the bump as ABC released their fall schedule (https://tvline.com/2020/08/27/abc-premiere-dates-fall-2020-bachelorette/) today with the remaining episodes of Celebrity Family Feud, Press Your Luck, and Match Game, airing on Thursdays as replacement series for the TGIT drama block starting on September 24th. The network also announced that the premiere of Supermarket Sweep and the second seasons of both Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and Card Sharks will be on October 18th.

I wonder why they’re switching nights for PYL and Family Feud unless they have no faith in them and just want to burn off the remaining episodes. It really was silly of them to not just air everything they filmed in order, skipping weeks and splicing in reruns made the casual TV viewer assume they were all out of new episodes and that there was no need to continue watching.

Nope. As was said before...they are using these shows as "new" fall series because pretty much none of their scripted series will be ready- most likely until early 2021. Every network is scrambling- importing series from canada, relying on game shows and reality (or extending seasons) and airing shows they own from streaming or cable. It's not some conspiracy that they "want to burn off episodes"- its the exact opposite.

Right, the holdoff was to have the remaining new episodes air during the Fall season to replace scripted shows that haven't resumed taping/won't be ready to start at the standard time yet. Excited to finally see new PYL episodes again and the premiere of Supermarket Sweep and Millionaire. Wonder what ABC is airing on Sundays before Sweep, Millionaire, and Card Sharks begin since Feud, PYL, and Match Game are moving to Thursday.

Also, Deadline reported back on August 7 that $100,000 Pyramid would begin taping in the last week of August-- https://deadline.com/2020/08/the-100000-pyramid-back-to-studio-abc-1203006568/ (https://deadline.com/2020/08/the-100000-pyramid-back-to-studio-abc-1203006568/)

It'll be refreshing to see these games shows, and new episodes, on a weeknight.  It's been so long.

While that is the case, I probably wouldn't have moved it to Thursday.  CFF, PYL and MG will be opposite Thursday Night Football.  It might not be a big deal from September 17 to October 1, but I hope TPTB take that into consideration if the ratings for their gameshows suffer.  Unless they're aware of the conflict & competition!

To best answer JayC's question, I guess reruns of their Thursday block (as an encore) would be enough.  Probably not since it'll be opposite Sunday Night Football

Something has to air against football. Same as shows on Sunday night against Sunday Night Football. Things being what they are, that’s game shows for ABC.

And there’s currently no reason to expect there not to be a football season.

Honestly, 6 months ago I would have said the same thing. But with the way things have changed...who even knows anymore? Most colleges won't be running seasons as it is, and now that games for the other sports have been cancelled/postponed due to social justice issues...nothing is guaranteed.

Speaking from an apolitical standpoint, I was going to post something along the lines of what urbanpreppie0004 said. Some training camps have cancelled their sessions this past week because of it. The other major sports postponed some of their games this past week.

One possible additional positive possibility with everything:  if there's still a lack of original programming being produced, there's at least a chance we might see the networks air more classic holiday specials come fall and winter if they have gaps to fill.  Granted, these would likely be restricted to "name brand" franchises and would be edited for time, but I think the chance is there for more besides the all time immortals to get another airing (for example, CBS could resurrect the Garfield specials, ABC could consider bringing back Mickey's Christmas Carol and/or at least one of the Muppet holiday specials, and the second tier of Rankin/Bass specials--The Year Without a Santa Claus, Twas the Night Before Christmas, Rudolph's Shiny New Year, Frosty's Winter Wonderland, maybe The Little Drummer Boy if they wouldn't consider its message too religious--could be in play).

I'm excited for new episodes of Celebrity Family Feud, Press Your Luck, and Match Game on the 24th of next month and Supermarket Sweep, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and Card Sharks on October 18th after America's Funniest Home Videos!!!!!! It's like when Millionaire and Whose Line Is It Anyway? were on ABC!!!!! Ill probably check out the season premiere of Dancing With The Stars, although if the ratings drop, it'll be over after the season.

The cancellations for sports leagues this week have mostly been for political reasons and not Covid related. Baseball hasn’t been faring as well with the illness but has managed to continue trucking in. Hockey and Basketball so far have been mostly fine however.

Though this is wishful thinking, I think the chance of other classic holiday specials besides the timeless ones at least on CBS and ABC is slim to none. As I see CBS airing holiday episodes of cartoons from Nickelodeon along with episodes of classic comedy shows that they have in their library and ABC airing movies and or even airing some of the Lifetime holiday movies into their schedule to fill gaps.

And to get back on topic with my own answer to JayC's question, I'm thinking that what would be airing on Sundays on ABC while Millionaire, Supermarket Sweep, and Card Sharks premiere will be movies or repeats of comedies and dramas.

The Garfield specials? That's just not going to happen. CBS isn't that desperate. There already is some evergreen content every holiday season, and some of the B-list (or lower) stuff has moved on to things like Freeform's 25 days of Christmas. Yes, Disney could borrow some of that, but you're more likely to see much more recent programs or new shows produced in more Covid-applicable ways than to ever, ever see The Little Drummer Boy on a broadcast network.

So, what did you all think of the new episodes tonight? Celebrity Family Feud had some okay moments.  Match Game having a
58th episode celebration was awesome, and the episode itself was hilarious. Congratulations to them on making it this far!  However, the highlight continues to be Press Your Luck.  I think the idea to bring three former players back was a good one, and what an exciting game!  Don't wanna say too much else in case anyone hasn't seen them yet.  If I had to rank them, it'd be:

Press Your Luck
Match Game
Celeb Feud

PYL Spoilers below

Is that add a 1 space new? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before, it’s kind in of a game breaker in the first half of the game since at that point your only hooe of winning is if the person who landed on it gets the Whammy

Great show, loved seeing everyone return.

Response to PYL Spoilers: (Spoiler covered)
To the show this season, yes. It and Double Your $$ + 1 Spin were carryovers from the original series.

Actually,

It's been hit at least a couple times previously.  What happened is in those cases, the contestant only had a 4 digit total (say $5,695), so the added 1 made it $15,695, which doesn't make it the same impact as this time did going from 5 digit total to 6 digit total.  So, it really depends on when someone hits it.

It's been over a day since the show aired and this thread is full of spoilers anyway, so I'm not going to use white text here. Add a One was part of the original PYL; however, the amounts on the board were so small that it was extremely unlikely anyone would ever get to $10,000 without hitting Add a One. (Even Michael Larson was only able to get $2,500 in the first round.) And once Add a One was hit, it was taken off the board and replaced by a prize, so there was no concern about someone having $1,000-$9,999 and then hitting Add a One twice in a row. So it was very very unlikely anyone in the 1980s version would hit Add a One and have it add $100,000 to their total.

And furthermore, in the CBS run, Add a One was only used in Round 1, specifically to avoid it being hit for too much.

I don’t ever recall anyone hitting Add-A-One in the original version either when $10,000 was won prior to that.  Granted it was only around for a year.   The thing is that the CBS limits were $25,000 and $50,000 during PYL’s 80s run, so in the event that someone would have hit five digits in the first half, they probably would have taken A-A-ONE of the board.

I think five figures have definitely been won in first half, but as mentioned, it’s difficult.  Not many money and a spin spaces in Round one.  If someone were to do it in the 80s, they would have to accumulate a lot of spins (not easy) and hit the big bucks about 6-7 times.  Both are possible, but what’s more likely is doing both while hitting a whammy in-between that run.

I used to love the A-A-ONE back in the day, even during the USA airings.  Personally, I could take it or leave it.  I was pleasantly surprised that it was hit to get to a total exceeding $100,000 (though I feared that a whammy would wreck that historic moment).  From there I think it was a mistake to remove it from the board.  I think it should’ve been made available for the other contestants.  It’s cash, not a car or some other prize.  That way it opens the door for someone else (or everyone) to hit it for six-figures.  That, and I won’t have to root against a contestant that has no shot at winning short of a whammy costing the leading contestant money that he or she won’t reach, win or lose.

Again, nice win within a great episode.  I don't think we'll see that again

AA1's main purpose is to provide added excitement for Round 1, which season 3 of the '80s version also added a featured trip that Rod Roddy would announce that was worth more than the other prizes on the board (around $1500-$2000 or so). Just like the CBS version, it disappears upon being hit, and this of course potentially could lead to a variation of strategy in Round 2, where an opponent would pass a bit earlier than normal. Double Your $$ + One Spin is similar in that if you have nothing, you won't get anything besides a spin if you land on it, and then disappears like a prize. Unlike the CBS version however, Double Your $$ appears in every game, and that originally applied to Add-A-One in the '80s before becoming an everyday space as well. The Big Bucks Bonanza though set a record in the other direction: the lowest non-zero total so far awarded for that portion of the show (and just a single prize and no cash at that).

I'm aware about the AA1.  I definitely enjoyed it in the past, and it's nice to see it in this modern version.   I know about how that and D$+S (Double Bucks & a spin) were swapped out.  My lack of excitement with it is mainly due to how I haven't been as excited as I once was over big wins in gameshows, including PYL.  They're still exciting, don't get me wrong, but I guess when there are more chances to win more cash & prizes, that has an effect.  Just speaking for myself.

I'm not saying for the show to axe AA1, but I just not a fan of it being available whenever a contestant has at least $10,000

To rank my order, I have to go with PYL, Match Game, and Family Feud in terms of most exciting to great but not as exciting.  However, I think I'd put the first half of CFF over Match Game, but not the second half

I think something like PYL, would really benefit today from returning champs like the old version had. It'd do a lot to fix that big money type of fatigue. Course this would also mean getting rid of the bonus round, which also doesn't do any favors for it, since we've seen that all before too. But that's not likely to happen obviously, either of those really.

It’ll be nice to have returning champions; having those contestants return last Thursday was great for the show.  It’s a good thing when we get to see familiar faces on more than one show, especially when all three were just that (though decades in the making).

I don’t think it’ll work or be a great idea.  I have to say returning champions (like the 80s original format) is not going to happen.  Same goes for Match Game, $100,000, and Card Sharks (more on that later).  The dilemma is that there are a handful of episodes annually and unless a contestant retires on the season finale, he or she would have to wait a while (the following summer) to defend the title.  I wonder, however, if a contestant wins the Bonus Round if it would mean automatic retirement.

While I don’t see PYL having returning champions, I was referring to the version on television today.  Now, if PYL ran daily (a la Family Feud), it should work.  Half-hour shows, though.  Even if the bonus round stayed intact.  PYL could “borrow” from WOF (or some other gameshow(s)) and have a week full of nine contestants.  3 different ones on Monday – Wednesday, the winners of each game battle on Thursday, and then have your bonus round on Friday.  Whatever happens, happens, but 9 new players the following week.

Given the success of ABC Fun & Games, it would be nice to see PYL, as well as Match Game, Pyramid & CS return to daily TV.  Not just Family Feud, for reasons.  Best of luck finding any space on the networks though!  Of course, in addition to that long shot, the fact is those are all hosted by A-List folks, which, while great, there are only 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, and 12 months in a year

I think Pyramid and maybe Card Sharks could work with their hosts retained from ABC Fun & Games. Though Michael Strahan from the former has his Good Morning America and NFL on FOX duties, while Joel McHale has or had a recurring role on The CW series Stargirl. But as you said, it is just a pipe dream to have game shows on daily besides the courtroom shows that remain on the air for years and the celebrity hosted talkers that last either a year or two.

Though this is unrelated to returning champions on ABC's Fun & Games block, but the network has just released a full promo for Supermarket Sweep.

They made up for that add a one from last week by having it hit this week by a contestant with $0 (which of course became a huge $10) :)
