Title: "Celebrity Wheel of Fortune" is a go for Primetime on ABC

I am just floored. Definitely good news to see after the bouts of bad news the last few days. I wonder if they'll do anything unique? I'm guessing with celebs playing, it'll be all cash. So maybe we'll see more money amounts in the bonus round in the absence of vehicles. I can forsee them doing tie-ins with other ABC shows and having them as contestants. Like having Amy, Robin, and George from GMA in one half and Lara, Ginger, and Michael in the other. There are so many possibilities. I'm just happy that after all these years it's finally happening!

Long overdue. As opposed to Millionaire going the celebrities only route, I approve of this since Wheel hasnít done a celebrity show in years. Hereís hoping one of the charities sponsored by Alex Trebek gets a mention.

Meh. Iím hoping they find a way to liven it up. And lose some of the omnipresent sponsor plugs for everything. Itís about one step away from having each peg on the wheel brought to us by a dubious drug or insurance company.

I can see the breakdown for the envelopes for the bonus round wheel being the following: 7 each of $40k , $45k , and $50k , 2 of the $100k , and 1 of the $1 Million

Probably more like 21 of $40K, 1 $45K, 1 $50K, 1 $100K/$1M.

I couldn't have said it better. I hardly watch any game shows with celebrity contestants because the game play almost always takes a back seat to giving the celebrities TV time.

Certainly a surprise, though I think it's more surprising they never tried a network primetime Wheel special before especially in the late 80s and 90s. It'll be interesting to see what changes are made. Hopefully it's a decent mix of celebrities.

Not only that, but there's no real risk involved for the celebrities.

I hope I don't get banned for using The Apprentice as an example, but it was one thing to see regular people compete for the dream job of a lifetime, running one of Donald Trump's companies (yes, I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, but only to make a point).  When it became The Celebrity Apprentice, it's not like Joan Rivers was going to give up her career to work for Donald Trump, and for all the celebrities who got fired, the charities they played for still received a donation from the show.

Celebrity Apprentice was classic TV though because what was at stake for these C and D listers was their ego. They would somehow manage to pick the most eclectic group of personalities and knew how to pair exactly right people up to grind each others gears. The stuff they did with Gary Busey was amazing, although sad in a way because heís clearly a head case to begin with since his accident.

Family Feud almost never has celebrities anymore.  In fact, I don't think they've had a special in the past half-decade.  I'm not counting the Celebrity Family Feud specials that air during the summer.  Those are separate IMO, and it's only one show per week during the off-season.  I'm neutral with Millionaire, and I'll agree for TPIR since the gameplay is altered somewhat with the stars (where in other gameshows the gameplay isn't altered).  But FF hasn't done those on the regular show in quite a long time (where the celebrities would be on the show for the entire week, as opposed to one day for a once a week broadcast).

That said, I agree with imhomerjay over having the stars.  I get that it may be overdone, but it's a great business decision.  Really, it can get boring when you have regular contestant that aren't any good or don't understand the rules & format which may lead to a below average product.

I'm not totally excited for Primetime Wheel, personally, but I'm excited that they're giving it a go.  I'm interested to see how it'll play out; Wheel has become stale over the past several years, but with rather new leadership, I imagine that the show will be an improvement from what we've seen over the recent past

Here's the "bind" I see with this: you get a potentially larger audience. Let's be clear, this is filer material giving the regular series a rest, but still. So for your big, glitzy (?) prime-time debut, the show plays almost exactly as it did in 1995. "Oh, that's still around?" Sure, celebrity appeal might bring you some attention, that's the point. But is that going to have spillover to the regular version? I'm dubious.

But if you have some freshening that's been planned though not yet implemented for whatever reasons (budget, pandemic, getting used to the show), you've essentially blown the shot to impress any added audience with the freshened approach in a primetime, um, showcase.

Now, if you really don't have much in the conceptual stage other than maintaining the status quo, no harm, no foul. Take the few episodes to have some fun, ABC gets some fresh filler and everyone goes on their merry way.

I find it quite interesting that there has never been a primetime network Wheel like there was with Jeopardy! (remember Super Jeopardy from 1990?). Also, the show as a whole will be the latest to air on all of the Big Three networks at one time or another: NBC (daytime from 1975 to '89, and again in 1991), CBS (daytime from 1989 to '90), and now ABC. And it's an added bonus to have the ABC O&O's already airing the syndicated Wheel and J! on weeknights.

The problem with Wheel quite simply is that itís pretty dull, and there isnít a whole lot that can be done to make it more exciting or entertaining, itís kind of married to a format that doesnít lend itself to much in the way of skill or strategy.

Iím not sure I understand the surprise at a lack of primetime network Wheel of Fortune until now. Jeopardy had one summer run prior to 2020. Thatís it, decades apart between the runs. Itís not like it was a huge phenomenon. Price showed up periodically in that span. A couple of incarnations of Feud had celebrity network runs.

Now ABC has some holes to patch on an interim basis. Game shows have worked, so they go back to the well. The Jeopardy GOATs end up on The Chase. Wheel gives them an easy way to do a celebrity show for not a huge investment. Win win.

ABC O&O viewers will get lucky on Thursdays by getting 90 minutes of Wheel. I've always wanted a primetime Wheel even if it was a one-off thing like Super J! or J! GOAT.

Now that it's happening, I'd love to see ABC revive Password. I think it could work very easily, you just would have to find a good host. And, if possible, even if it's a pre-recording, have Betty White send a message or make some sort of an appearance.

I believe in my area, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune has aired on my CBS affiliate and then my NBC affiliate, but never my ABC affiliate.  Just a coincidence; I'll get 90 minutes of consecutive Wheel, but I'll have to press a button or two to make the switch. No big deal.  Just rather amazing that I never had Wheel or Jeopardy on the network that has and will air Jeopardy and Wheel.

Of all the gameshows that have returned, and it's pretty much been all of successful & popular ones, this is the only one that hasn't returned.  At least in its classic format (I thought the 2008-2009 $1,000,000 version was alright)!  I think it would pretty good to see this return as part of the lineup (either in the summer or during the dead period between the fall and spring TV seasons).

That being said, I wouldn't bet on it.  Unless it's a limited primetime series (I think that's what you meant), I'd bet against a Password-revival.  I forgot where I saw it; tried to find where it was said (might've been quoted here on G-R dot Net), but Betty White made mention to why the show failed.  I believe it was due to the current era & how modern day contestants aren't as bright as they were in the past

Count me as one of those since the NYC market will have that opportunity.

Anybody know yet if the primetime format is going to be two half hour games or one game for the full hour? Here's hoping it's the former; that seems more likely anyway.

Two games makes more sense to me. If they stretched one whole game to an hour, then theoretically, they could have 8 regular rounds of play. I think it would be awkward to do two Toss-ups, 3 rounds, Triple Toss-up, one more round, then repeat again. I could see them doing like Feud. My only concern would be if they give too much time to the celebs, it takes away from gameplay. I know there have been a handful of Feud episodes that only have one game for the whole hour.

I hope that they have better puzzles than the regular show. For the past few years, it seems like syndicated Wheel has barely any 21st century pop culture in their puzzles. Nearly every Song Lyrics or Song/Artist puzzle is either Beatles or Bruce Springsteen, and I can't even remember the last time I saw TV Title, and not just 80's TV Title during Season 35.

And some that will get a 90 minute Wheel segment with a 30 minute Jeopardy interlude (like Albany NY, since they put Wheel at 7 and Jeopardy at 7:30).

And of course, it was the same for the O&O's during Jeopardy GOAT last year. I remember they reran the first three episodes the following Saturday, so that whole night was a 3.5 hours of Jeopardy with 30 minutes of Wheel sandwiched in, though all were reruns of course.

I wonder if the Wheel episode airing the same day Celebrity Wheel premieres will have Pat and Vanna promote it in the closing segment. I know they've done special closing segments meant to air only on certain networks before (I recall a segment promoting Dancing with the Stars that only aired on ABC airings)

Good question - while it would make sense that some stations might not want to have something promoting a show on another station, things like that do happen on other shows (like talk shows where the guest is on a show that may also be on another network, at least in some areas).

Seems like it's even happened occasionally with a guest on a network show (like the late night shows) where the guest is in something on another network, but I'm not certain.

Match Game, which is currently on ABC, has had a ton of people from SNL (and other NBC shows) over the years.  I didn't even know there was an issue with that.   Game shows have had stars from different networks appearing on their shows for 40-50 years (more or less).

FWIW, the original Family Feud did feature stars from ABC more often than not (including The Love Boat, All My Children, One Life To Live, General Hospital) instead of shows from CBS & NBC.  IIRC, the nighttime syndicated Family Feud aired on my local ABC affiliate at 7:30 right before the ABC primetime specials when they had them.  Not much promotion from Dawson, I don't think.  Usually the stations would.

I don't think Pat & Vanna will be doing anything in their closing segments right before the show.  If there was one, it would be edited in.  Not much in the closing segment from one of their regular shows

What you guys meant is the daytime series has had daytime stars from other networks appearing and daytime game shows usually had the rule of booking the daytime soap stars and the daytime hosts appearing on their own network's daytime series. There have been exceptions with this for instance, Family Feud Challenge, Now You See It '89 and Scrabble all booked daytime soap stars from another network in the Soap Opera Special Week. Password Plus, Tattletales, Just Men! and The New Battlestars had also done so as well as the $25,000 Pyramid IIRC.

The first confirmed celeb contestant is actor and comedian Kevin Nealon. He snapped a photo of the set and posted it to Instagram:

Very nice upgrades to the set: a different color scheme, the logo, an extra LED border around the board, LED lights in the steps, something new around the center stage video wall, new golden arch designs, and bringing back the glass wedge cutouts used several seasons ago. The color scheme is reminiscent to Aussie's Million Dollar Wheel in 2008.

The show is indeed an hour-long and will last for 8 weeks.

Yes, the set for the Celebrity primetime specials does look nice. I always liked the glass wheel in the backdrop when it was there several seasons ago.

Also, from the promo aired on ABC last night it will be 24 celebrities over the 8 episodes, meaning the same 3 will play for the hour. So either it will be one long episode with additional rounds and less editing, or they will play two games with the celeb with the highest combined total going to the bonus round.

Whatever they choose, it should not be a chore to watch. This is Mikeís best chance to make his presence known on Wheel.

As for the set, I hope they use at least some of those changes for Season 39, like how Jeopardy did for Season 37 (some of the set changes were from the GOAT tournament).

Setting aside that I prefer when Feud airs 2 shows with different teams to round out the hour. But that wasnít the topic of the discussion at that point. I find padding to a full hour on Celebrity Feud incredibly tedious as well. The conversation was about Wheel.
Hence, a comment on Wheel.

Price has done...checks notes...what, one program now with all celebrities (that is, not mixing celebrities with ďcivilianĒ contestants)? And the format is inherently different. New players are introduced throughout, and the program flow breaks things up to focus on one at a time doing something different.

I also hope they add non-top dollar four digit spaces as well. The $5,000 wedge hasn't been landed on since October 8 on the regular show, and I can't remember such a drought where this has happened. They intentionally set up the Wheel before R4 so that Pat misses the $5K by about 5-9 spaces, since most of the time due to extra tossups and sponsor/fee plugs, they begin that round with a final spin from Pat. It's also been a while since someone took the Million Dollar Wedge to the bonus round. That shouldn't be necessary I hope for primetime. Still, I'm really looking forward to this and hopefully it could lead to better changes for the standard show.

There is absolutely nothing they can change about what the Wheel lands on. So what do you even mean landing on the MDW could lead to better changes for the regular show? Everyone spins a different strength; what you land on is dependent on that and where the wheel is when you start your spin.

And, to be correct, the Wheel used to be (and probably still is) set before Round 4 so Pat would have a better shot at landing on $5,000. He just doesn't spin it as hard as he used to. I mean, he is 74 after all...

He's hit the $5,000 a lot less frequently since they moved it and the other big money wedges next to the Bankrupt a few seasons ago.

I imagine there will be some additional four digit wedges added for primetime.

They're not setting it up for that reason; they do it like that because they always put the top value on the yellow player's flipper at the top of each round. They began doing that at least a decade ago. They also do it for $2500 and $3500.

Probably so that there's a uniform starting position for the Wheel. No different than the Big Wheel starting on the dollar for every SCSD.

They do it for the Bonus Wheel, too. It starts on the first A in the word AMERICA'S.

Wow, wouldn't have guessed Drew woulda been on this with the network crossover. That means Pat will have connected with both of the other "Big 3" shows during his time with Wheel, having been involved with Alex (RIP) and Jeopardy on the Wheel and J! sets both over the years, and now with Drew here. Pretty cool actually.

Touche, I forgot about Drew's appearance there. I guess I am just used to the separation from old days. But your point is fair.

To be fair, Drewís appearance on Family Feud was very forgettable. I believe it was filmed very shortly after Amie died, and he looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world except there.

I thought of that reading Jay's response too actually. I imagine this will be better.

New promo shows where some of the contestants' positions will be. It also appears that Vanna will have a more prominent speaking role and will be wearing a mic the whole show; a nice touch!

They just aired a new promo during tonight's episode of The Bachelor featuring Drew! Of course Pat comments on his new beard.  :oldlol:

"That is Drew under there, isn't it?"
"I'm a passing resemblance to S. Claus."

Drew appears on the second episode, airing January 14.

I feel that the two-game format suited the hour pretty well. It was a three round format with the TDV being $2500-$3500 ($2500 in the first game)-$5000, the four MDW spaces in Rounds 2 and 3 (the MDWs become $1000 spaces if a player is already processing one), and a Bonus Wheel that contains 4 $100,000 envelopes, with $25,000 (first appearance since 2013), $50,000, and $75,000 wedges making up the remainder. Most of the puzzles were either longer or contained more multiples of a single letter (one puzzle about a Culture Club hit had a record 11 A's), and of course the $950 replaced the Free Play wedge. Overall a 9/10 for me, and I'm hoping Drew can win big next time!

I enjoyed The Chase just as much as the few times I've caught it on GSN, while the "detective quiz" The Hustler was cool with a neat set and a climax that's certainly worth rewatching.

One thing I'd add to this is that they added bonuses to each round win, $5,000-$15,000 and $20,000 at least for Game 2, missed Game 1. Personally I was expecting a little more from this to be honest. It seemed a little overly paint by numbers for me. I wouldn't have minded some sort of top score for the whole hour over the 2 games plays a single bonus round, or some variation on that vs. 2 separate games entirely. But this is just me.

I think I would've rather it be one game being played for the hour rather than two separate games with three rounds and bonus round. With the way they paced the show it could've been done that way. I also don't like that the $20,000 bonus in round 3 pretty much means whoever wins that round will win the game.

Not much different from Prize Puzzle Round normally lol, but with it being the final round in this instance, I can see your point.

I was disappointed by how little game play there was. In spite of there only being one introduction, one conclusion, one set of contestant introductions, no prize puzzle prizes to describe, and more time in general due to being primetime instead of syndicated, they still only got 5 full puzzles plus one speed up round in. Compare to two syndicated episodes, where they fit in 6 full puzzles plus two speed up rounds. Yes, I know there was more exposition than usual, but it was still painfully slow at times. I also felt a bit bad for Tony Hawk, who was actually trying to play the game but kept getting overshadowed by two celebrities who were spending as much time trying to be funny as they were actually playing.

Was it me or did Tony not seem to wanna be there? He seemed really low on energy at least in the 2nd half, can't speak for the first not seeing it. It's either that or he was nervous. Also as an aside...did anyone else think the 2nd Toss Up at the start of the 2nd game seemed really really redundant, having no contestants to introduce/reintroduce? I don't see why they couldn't have done 1 puzzle for a flat $3,000 there, given they tweaked with different money amounts and all otherwise. Having a 2nd puzzle to determine who began the round just felt kinda silly.

I personally thought Tony's energy was fine, it's just that Leslie and Chandra were so over the top that Tony looked stiff in comparison to them. BTW, you should watch the first half if you get a chance, as Tony did have a couple of funny moments.

I wasn't a fan of Tony Hawk on the show. My family also mentioned that he seemed as though he didn't want to be there. Leslie and Chandra were entertaining at least.

I disagree, I do think Tony was happy to be there it's just he isn't the comedian or the big personality Leslie and Chandra are.

Iím biased as I cannot stand Leslieís personality. Just me, totally get it works for others. Iím more low key in my own life, so Tonyís vibe never struck me as not wanting to be there, but as someone who can quietly enjoy the experience and play the game without the more animated tone.

I had this same conversation with my wife about Leslie the other day. I canít quite tell if thatís simply her personality and who she is in real life and thus has no ďoffĒ button, or if she feels that Leslie Jones the entertainer is a character separate from Leslie Jones the person and she feels obligated to always be that character in whatever role sheís in.

Yeah idk....just watching this alone even without any other context outside of it, she came across as well.....a certain word for a female dog let's say that. I didn't find her likeable at all. Her facial expressions, her general attitude, it all was really off putting for me.

As an aside, I can't help but wonder if this game was kinda miscast. I say that because.....with two SUPER strong personalities in Leslie and Chandra, there wasn't a lot of balance. Leslie kinda overshadowed both she and Tony IMO, but Chandra was by no means meek. I think it might have worked out better to have Leslie on one episode and Chandra in another rather than have them both together. Anyone else share this view?

I think the thing is Tony got himself signed up for the show without fully knowing what it was, more than anything. Like he mentioned playing the app, but... in what set of circumstances is Tony Hawk Of All People the kind of person to sit down and watch Pat and Vanna play glorified Hangman every night, let alone enjoy it so much he downloaded the app? He had to have been using it to learn about the show and thus missed out on the stereotypical trappings like Shouting. Every. Word. Of. The. Answer. One. At. A. Time., surely.

Hi!!  If there's no other posts here yet, just letting everyone know Drew Carey will be one of celebrity contestants on Celebrity Wheel this week (it's 1/14 on ABC at 8:00-9:00pm PT)!  I'm looking forward to it!

Um, that's a little uncalled for to compare her to that. Her brash/loud attitude is part of her act. It's a charity game all for fun, which I'm sure they were told more than once to get them comfy enough to even play the game, of course she's going to turn it on and ham it up. Her energy was no different than Richard Simmons when he appeared on the show and would probably less than the energy you'd get if Sam Kinison, Chris Farley, or Robin Williams could appear on the show.

As an aside, I can't help but wonder if this game was kinda miscast. I say that because.....with two SUPER strong personalities in Leslie and Chandra, there wasn't a lot of balance. Did not get the same impression that you seemed to get from Chandra. She was mostly quiet and became mildly animated during her turn. She honestly seemed the most nervous out of the three of them, something that came across on the last game show I remember watching her on (The Pyramid). And I think they figured it'd be fun to see the clash between Leslie's animated attitude, and Tony's laid back vibe, which to me it was kinda fun. I enjoyed their overall chemistry together and can see why they picked this one to be first.

Drew Carey's episode aired tonight. I won't spoil how he did, but there was a bit where he and Vanna discussed her appearance on Price while wearing her "Get Serious" shirt.  :P

Drew did a great job last night competing on Wheel. He seemed very into the game and could be seen intensely studying the board when it was not his turn.
