Title: Buzzr to Air Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour Episodes on February 17th
Post by: goldroadfanatic on February 01, 2019, 02:40:00 PM
I did not think this would be possible, but like finally getting the rights to air Classic Concentration last fall, Buzzr finally got the rights to air The Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour from 1983-84, according to Vulture (https://www.vulture.com/2019/02/match-game-hollywood-squares-hour-streaming-buzzr.html).  This will be the first time these episodes have been rerun anywhere since their original broadcasts over 35 years ago.

So far, episodes 2 through 5 will air on February 17th, and Buzzr is working to get the show on its lineup later this year.  Practically every episode's master tape needs to be cleaned up and digitized, which is a time-consuming process as described in the article.

Overall, I'm excited for this!  The show itself had its problems, but I enjoyed what I've seen on YouTube over the years.  Also, we'll be able to hear that great theme song again, years after The Price is Right stopped using it.

Still love hearing that theme. It takes you on a great ride. However, I never liked the sets on this version. They always looked way too small for the size of the stage. The show left the airwaves with decent ratings, but NBC was eager to launch the soap Santa Barbara .

Looking forward to this myself. I saw the show when it originally came on in the 80s, and I always thought that Jon Bauman got a bad rap. He wasn't terrible, he was just unpolished as a host. With proper seasoning and a little time I alway thought that he would have improved.

Our NBC station stopped carrying MG-HS in February of 1984. Just made no traction against General Hospital and Guiding Light.

Our NBC station stopped carrying MG-HS in February of 1984. Just made no traction against General Hospital and Guiding Light.

In our market it aired on an independant UHF station at 12 noon. Our NBC affiliate started airing reruns of The Rockford Files at the 3PM Eastern spot after Fantasy failed.

We had four independents here; WATL was our "channel of love" as they had picked up a number of NBC daytime shows in 1983 discarded by regular affiliate WXIA. They ended the practice after Go! was canceled, so they did not pick up MG-HS after WXIA dropped it. None of the other indies were interested, either.

Curious question.  Is "The Hollywood Squares" owned by MGM Television or CBS Television Distribution?

King World co-produced and distributed the most recent version (1998-2004), so that would make CBS its owner.

Does this mean, in theory, CBS could license Hollywood Squares out to Freemantle, like NBC licensed Concentration to Goodson-Toddman?

I'm guessing thus MGM owns the Davidson version at present given it was distributed by Orion Television, with the Orion catalog currently being in MGM's hands?

I'm not sure who does own that edition, but I don't think it's MGM.  Their website, which has an exhaustive listing of their television library, does not mention Hollywood Squares.

NBC actually licensed Concentration to Jim Victory Television. Goodson-Todman was subcontracted as the production company. If Fremantle wanted to reboot Squares, then yes, theyíd have CBS license them to do so.

Remember the show during its original run as well (albeit barely).  Bauman didn't have a chance I'm afraid since he basically had big shoes to fill and was teamed with Rayburn.  Wasn't Jon's fault Peter Marshall passed on the opportunity to host.  I still wonder what the outcome would have been has Pete hosted (and if they had a better set and/or timeslot)

I wonder if Fremantle could work magic and re-create MGHS to air somewhere following this rerun (similar to how Whammy made its debut following PYL's return to TV in reruns after a 6-year absence)

Seeing as how it ran just nine months, it's doubtful Fremantle would take a chance. Then again, Chain Reaction ran only five months on NBC originally and it's been revived three times since.

From what I understand, the opportunity was never Peter's to pass up. For some reason NBC never thought to offer him the job (this is probably why, by Peter's own admission, he was glad when the show was canceled).

Is this true? Is Buzzr really going off the air forever on Wednesday February 27 at 9:00 a.m.?

I just find this troubling. First, there were problems in New York, and now comes this.

I have never seen this happen before; the week's schedule only partially filled (if it did, I don't remember). That was how one of the posters claimed it was a sign of the channel being gone forever.

That is quite the leap in logic there.

The schedule being only partially filled happens all the time.

Absolutely not.

As someone who works in TV, stop making such generalizations. Most stations only program the next 1-2 weeks in advance. Anything beyond that is STILL BEING WORKED ON. People have jobs at a station or a network. Let them do their jobs and don't play the Chicken Little card when you see fit just because you don't see a schedule past a certain date.

According to Buzzr's schedule, the four episodes will start airing at 4:00 pm on that Sunday. Did they say yet whether they'll start from the premiere? One of the promos has Gene talking about the "marriage" so it seems plausible.

If the promos showed clips from the premiere, then I'm guessing we'll be seeing it later in the year, when Buzzr puts it on their regular schedule.

If not, oh well. At least it's on the trading circuit.

Curious question.  Is "The Hollywood Squares" owned by MGM Television or CBS Television Distribution?

According to "The Other Wiki",  CBS owns only the HS NAME,  Sony owns the format, thereby explaining why the most recent incarnations were called "HIP-HOP SQUARES".

Watching yesterday I liked the show, Gene Rayburn was great as always with Match Game and Jon Bauman did pretty well with the Hollywood Squares portion. I thought the hour format made it too long though and the set looked too cheap except for the giant video board and like it was designed by a group of elementary school students using blocks from math class.

Bauman was as horrendous as I remembered. Heís like a robot, saying the same lines with no variation. He also looked very uncomfortable up there. Goodson could have chosen far better.

Hollywood Squares was boring. Almost zero funny lines, multiple choice, and default wins do not make a good game. Throw in Baumanís awful hosting, and it 20+ minutes being wasted.

Subpar group of celebrities, especially Skip Stephenson. I had to look up who Twyla Littleton was; clearly just there for eye candy.

Wait until soap opera week! It gets worse!

Goodson could have chosen far better.
And probably would've, if it had been his choice to make. AFAIK, Bauman was entirely NBC's doing. If Goodson had gotten his way, Gene would've hosted the entire hour by himself.

At least Skip had been on Match Game before, was on the final syndicated week in fact. As a sidenote, episode 6 (or the episode following the last yesterday) is on YouTube (though the quality is really bad making it tough to watch as a result), and features a young Arsenio Hall among others. Charles Nelson Reilly too I think for HS portion. So there's that to look forward to anyway when they show more later on.

I wonder if Bauman got better later with the robot thing. One thing that irked me to this end incidentally is EVERY TIME he took over the show for HS, he'd throw to break the exact same way "And we'll be right back". It's a small thing maybe but kinda bugged me. He coulda deviated a little bit from it at least once.

Also......was I hearing things, or did the producers make a MAJOR mistake in the last episode on the Bonanza question? I mighta heard it wrong, but I KNOW Bonanza had more episodes than All in the Family and The Beverly Hillbillies did by a wide margin. I asked Jon actually on Twitter about it after the fact, and if it was ever corrected if indeed I am right on this, and he didn't remember. But that really stood out to me as a big error by the writing staff again if I heard the question right (which I admit I may not have as I was sorta half listening half not at points in the marathon while chatting with some friends at same time).

I didn't find Bauman's hosting to be that bad personally. He was pretty repetitive with his lines but I thought he was alright overall especially with the contestant and celebrity interaction. The question writing could've been better and they kept gags going for too long after some questions. It was also weird that they went to break right after introducing the extra celebrities and making the host switch for the Hollywood Squares portion.

He didnít get better. Later on, he also constantly reminded the contestant what symbol they were playing.

I hated Skip on that final week of Match Game as well. Just a very obnoxious person.

I feel like Jon Bauman is getting an unfair shake here...this format of Squares is, simply put, terrible. Boring multiple choice questions, no written zingers, no reining in of comedians, and a scoring format that easily lets one contestant run away with the game, AND win without doing anything-he has to fit in as many questions as possible; changing the entire essence of squares.

Those are all problems and major reasons why Squares was terrible. Bauman however made it worse. A competent host could have squeezed some sort of life out of that. Rayburn would have done a much better job with the klunky format. Even a Jack Narz or Art James type would have been an upgrade over robotic, uncomfortable Bauman.

Let's be honest, Peter Marshall himself would not have made this afterthough format work. And really, at least Bauman was likeable and acted like he wanted to be there. As I said before, maybe Gene the veteran could have been little more of a mentor to Jon instead of just bashing him because Bauman was a bright guy and he I think he would have tried to improve himself.

In other words, Goodson basically wanted an hour-long version of Match Game. Gene hosting Hollywood Squares might have undercut the Squares portion of it even more than it already was.

To make it better, I would have shortened MG two just two rounds and allow for both the Super Match (just up for $10,000, no special multipliers with just six stars) and HS's "Pick a star for a prize" bonus round, where then I would have introduced the multiple choice question, similar to how it was on the first three seasons of the Bergeron version while having the multiplier cards showing stuff ranging from money, trips, rooms of furniture, jewelry, to a new car. I'd keep the $25 for correct answers, but of course force a contestant to answer correctly to win a round. And there's another thing that could have returned as well: The Secret Square. That way, not only HS is back to a much more respectable format, it would also allow for more equal time between the MG and HS segments, which was more 40/20 as opposed to 30/30. If it was called "Match Game FEATURING Hollywood Squares Hour", then it would make better sense. Too bad John Davidson wasn't available a few years early for the HS portion, even if he had been a square many times in the original version by this point.

I've frankly never cared for John Davidson's hosting. He always came across to me as a phony, stereotypical game show host, to the point that I thought he was the real-life incarnation of the Mr. Game Show toy from the 80s.

Davidson was bad, especially when he did Pyramid. He looked so clueless. Iíd still rank him above Bauman when it comes to hosting Squares.

Goodson have Bauman tips on how to improve, but apparently he either couldnít do it, did not care, or just didnít listen.

Peter Marshall would have made the show more watchable, and squeezed some sort of life out of a bad format.

Oh, no doubt about it-- it's for good reason why Peter was always billed as "the master of The Hollywood Squares" when he was in there from 1966-81 on NBC and in syndie. Just as Wink Martindale has been the TTD expert (and remains so to this day, even to the point that he's done several home games of TTD recently which have been posted on YouTube), Peter has been the HS expert (as I say, for very good reason).

Reportedly, Peter Marshall was very interested in hosting the Squares half, but someone at NBC saw potential in Bauman and picked him for the job.
