Bid in secret during contestants row!
« on: February 17, 2007, 09:29:52 PM »
Do you think it's finally time to end the advantage for the 4th bidder by making the contestants' row bids done like "Final Jeopardy"? Stick dividers in between each podium and give the contestants :15 to write the bids down. Then the nearest one wins, like usual.

First off, you would totally take the fun out of the One-Bid round; second, it would cost the show more time.  In conclusion, I think I'll sum this up in one word...

No.  While it might make things more fair for everyone, especially for poor Niney, I don't see it being a very good idea for a few reasons:

1:  What happens if two people bid the same amount, and it's the winning bid?

2:  No interaction.  What works on a more intellectual game show like Jeopardy! will just kill the energy on The Price is Right.  Or basically, it'd make the show less interesting to watch.

So while I can understand your wanting to change it, it just isn't going to work well on a practical level.

The current format has worked for 50+ years, going back to Cullen's version.  Why change it?

The "Final Jeopardy" way would be better to prevent contestants from winning by just topping the last bid. This will force them to really think it out instead of just luck out.
Time wise it shouldn't take more than 15 secs to have all 4 bids in then announce the winner.

That still doesn't address the problem of two contestants making identical winning bids.  It also still doesn't address the problem of this way of bidding sucking the energy from the show.

Face it, there would be no interaction btw. the contestants.  I always enjoy seeing a contestant get smacked in the arm after one-upping the previous bidder!  :-D

It takes an awful lot to push one of my buttons and THIS is one of those times.  Why on Earth would you seriously want to incorporate Jeopardy! into The Price is Right?  It's bad enough that we're losing the man who made this show what it is today.  It's bad enough the the turntable is pink and purple.  It's bad enough that I'm NEVER going to see Bob in person. And it'll be below freezing in July before I EVER want to see Jeopardy! mixed with The Price is Right.  Have you ever heard of tradition?  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!  I really don't care anymore who becomes the next host.  All I care is that the show stays virtually the same for however long it lasts without Bob, because I can pretty well guess that it's all gonna go down hill from here.  I know how this country works.  If it's too different, it ain't gonna fly.  Sorry for such a rant, but this just did it for me.

To make the bidding more fair.  Duffie already explained that himself.  It doesn't make it a good idea, but at least he's got a legitimate reason for making the suggestion, as opposed to just "change for the sake of change."  Still not a good idea, though.

I didn't mean to rant there.  It's just that quite frankly, I hate Jeopardy.  I'm not gonna go into why.  I just think contestants' row is fine the way it is.

Yeah, bidding in secret would never work.  Like Frank15 said, what if 2 people (or in an extreme case, all 4 people) bid the same price and both were nearest to the ARP?  Who would come on stage to play a pricing game?  I like the way it is, and I like seeing people when they stupidly bid $1 under the previous contestant then realize what they just did.

Logical solution to the tie bids: Whoever submitted the bid first gets the win. "Simple! Simple!" as lovely Sandra Lee would say.:)

Oh, but there could be the possibility that the two of them finished at the exact same time.  It's happened a few times in Fastest Finger rounds on the ABC version of Millionaire, so don't say it's not possible.

Besides, the way I see it, there's no reason to mess with tradition; the way they do things now is just better to watch IMO.
Yes, I'm still around. :P

You're still ignoring the far more important fact that it would kill the show's momentum.

That method of bidding would make things a little more fair, but it would also make bidding a lot less interesting.  There wouldn't be any interaction and I would think it would take more time to do than the current method.
