Winning a prize to your hometown...
« on: February 18, 2007, 02:41:48 AM »
If a contestant wins a prize to their hometown (Which has happenned), from what I heard they can decline the prize which should be obvious thing to do but shouldn't they get a cash substitute instead? That's BS that they're put in a no-win situation like that. What should be the ruling?

No. That falls under the category "That's the Way Life Goes". What if somebody is playing for a new car but just bought one? What if somebody is playing for an outdoor spa but lives in a high-rise apartment? What if somebody wins a year's supply of doughnuts but is on a low-carb diet? That's not the show's fault.

The contesant can always try to SELL their winnings, but for the show to offer a cash substitute? Uh-uh. Not gonna happen.

I've known a couple of people who have won prizes of a weekend in a fancy hotel in the city in which they live, and they've had a great time. It's not quite the same, but if you won a trip to your own city on TPIR, you could obviously just not take the plane, but use the rest of the package. I've lived in Boston my entire life and I know that if I won a "trip" here, I'd be happy to finally do some of the "tourist" stuff I've always meant to do!

And Alfonzo, if you win the year's supply of Krispy Kremes, the first thing you do is get OFF the low-carb diet. ;-)

Any person that lives in that town, it must be a big town to have a trip there. I'm sure there would be someplace on the trip that they've never been to.

And even if they have, hey, it's free. ;)

Yo!,
Do you know what taxes are???? Why would you pay taxes on a trip to your hometown? If you can't get a substitute, decline the prize. Even Jessica Simson would know that!

I'm pretty sure taxes on a luxury hotel room would still be an incredible bargain compared to actually paying retail...

Duffie, you do know that you pay taxes on any prizes you win and accept... so by your logic, why accept anything you win, since you'd just pay taxes on it anyway.  Even OJ Simson knows that!

Once again, it's pointless to accept a trip to your hometown so maybe lose the pricing game on purpose if subs. aren't allowed. If it's a car, etc. Of course I'll try to win!

Guys, can we lock this thread?  It's going in circles, and Duff clearly isn't going to understand that not everyone shares his opinion.

Sounds good enough to me.  It's getting old, and Duffie, we really wish you'd listen to us, instead of ignoring us ad infinitum.
